Courts says Army PVT Bradley Manning must be referred to as a "She"
[US News] Chelsea Manning, a transgender woman convicted of leaking national security secrets to Wikileaks, must be referred to with feminine pronouns or in a gender neutral way in legal papers filed in her appeal, an Army Court ruled.

In the order, dated Wednesday, the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals said: "Reference to appellant in all future formal papers filed before this court and all future orders and decisions issued by this court shall either be neutral, e.g., Private First Class Manning or appellant, or employ a feminine pronoun." The order, signed by a court clerk, did not make the military change the name of the case in which Manning is referred to as Bradley and Chelsea.

Manning had sought the court order to force the military to use pronouns that conform to her gender identity; the military had opposed such requests, her supporters said in a statement. The Army and Pentagon didn't immediately respond to requests seeking comment.

In a legal filing dated Feb. 9, the Army opposed the request, citing a lack of legal basis and saying Manning didn't show how it was serve the interest of justice. The Army said it would use standard practice when an appellant's name changed during the course of legal proceedings ‐ including both ‐ to "avoid confusion" and would refer to Manning with masculine pronouns.

Manning revealed her gender identity as a transgender female after being convicted and sentenced to 35 years in the military prison at Leavenworth in July 2013. In February, the U.S. Army approved hormone therapy for Manning, saying since she'd been clinically diagnosed and as transgender and was confined to a military prison, it was obligated to provide and pay for her treatments.

"This is an important development in Chelsea's fight for adequate medical care for her gender dysphoria," Chase Strangio, an ACLU attorney representing Manning in her lawsuit seeking medical care for gender dysphoria. "That fight continues but at least the government can no longer attempt to erase Chelsea's identity by referring to her as male in every legal filing."

#8  When you take this article along with the SecDef's comments last week about opening the ranks to transgender folks it is downright scary. I think one of the last moves of the Empty Suit's reign will be to let cross dressers and trannies into the military. The Army is already looking for a way to not admin separate those with gender issues.

#9  Given that some 65% of those who've had any cosmetic surgery, including non-basic piercings and tattoos, come to regret it, it seems strange that those who've had transgender surgery are claimed to have a regret rate of no more than 5%. Especially when a recent survey of that population reveals that some 40% have attempted suicide. Much more on the subject in this article in The Federalist.

Which puts the probability that our hero ends up destroyed by the choice he made at around 50%. Be careful what you wish for.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Mother Jones: 'Three Hots' is racist and may be making you fat sick
[Mother Jones] Meals are good, and snacking is bad. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if you eat dinner with your family, you will keep your girlish figure and your kids will be healthier. Taking a lunch break will make you succeed at your job.

Okay, now forget all that. Because as it turns out, the concept of three square meals a day has practically zero to do with your actual metabolic needs. And our dogmatic adherence to breakfast, lunch, and dinner might actually be making us sick.

Skipping to final para:

Instead of obsessing about meal size and frequency, Ochner recommends something simpler: Don't eat when it's time for a meal; eat when you feel hungry. That, he says, is a lost art: In industrialized societies, where food is abundant, we eat because of social cues "or just because something smells good." If we can teach ourselves to pay attention to our own bodies instead of our environment, he says, "that might be the best diet of all."

#2  Three hots or regularly scheduled meals together not only allows for planning of events and economy of only fixing one meal it allows a family to sit down and share a meal together as a family. It is very important to the family unit.

But then family isn't something the left feels is important. In fact to the left family is all the things listed above by M Murcek.

That position of the jet [stream] has been pretty stagnant, or at least in the general same position for a long period of time. While that's allowing a lot of cold air to flow out of the Arctic into the Midwest and the eastern seaboard, we're locked into the warmer part of that pattern, and we've continued to see those warm pushes for a fairly long period over the winter," he said.

Arabia
Qatari fatwa calls for destruction of Egypt's pyramids, sphinx
[SAUDIGAZETTE.SA] A FATWA from a Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
i-owned online portal has been widely circulated by Egyptian press this week after it called for the destruction of pharanoic monuments on the grounds that they are contrary to Islam.

The religious edict, issued by Islam Web, was picked up by several independent Egyptian news outlets, such as Youm 7 and al-Fagr. It suggested the destruction of the historic monuments were a "religious duty" that Egyptians must fulfill.

But Egyptian newspapers carrying the story failed to notice the fatwa was first issued in December 2012. It has nevertheless sparked prime-time talk show discussions in Egypt. The fatwa, which had been issued in response to a user's question to the Islam Web's administrator, had stated: "The demolition of the pyramids and the sphinx is a religious duty," before referring to the monuments as "idols."

It added: "(The destruction of) monuments is a duty by Shariah (Islamic) law, as many texts have stipulated ... Texts on this issue are many and well-known but (implementing) them is restrained to one's ability... And so, if it's not possible to destroy the pyramids and the Sphinx as a result of the presence of an authority preventing that, Moslems would not be committing a sin."

In 2012, Egyptian scholars denounced any fatwa calling for the destruction of pharanoic monuments.

Under the radar
Islam Web is affiliated to the Qatari ministry of endowments, with Doha's government website advising users seeking online fatwas to "enter the official website of Fatwa Center on Islam Web."

The portal has previously been under the radar following a fatwa issued in 2006 permitting the burning of people to death. The edict was titled: "The Burning of Ias Bin Abdul Yalil by Abu Bakr" which visited a historic case study to conclude that burning people as a form of punishment is permissible.

But last month, the fatwa was reportedly removed from the site and retracted hours after the self-declared Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Death Eaters burned Jordanian pilot Moaz Al-Kasasbeh alive.

Islam Web has also attracted controversy for issuing a fatwa that legitimizes insulting Christianity, which was also widely reported.

Bangladesh
Woman beaten to death for not accepting arbitration judgement
[Dhaka Tribune] An elderly woman in Jessore was beaten to death for refusing to accept the outcome of an arbitration on Wednesday night.

Radha Rani Mawl, 55, was beat up along with four others, including her husband, by Tapan Mawl, a neighbour her family had a long-standing dispute with over a land property, in Bhaina area.

The woman and the four -- her husband Kartik Mawl, son Manishankar Mawl, 26, brother-in-law Debu Mal, 45, and another brother-in-law Manar Mawl, 56 -- were taken to Jessore General Hospital where she died hours later.

Kartik said Bikash Mawl, a local arbitrator, administered the arbitration between the two families and the outcome went in favour of Tapan.

"We protested the judgement, which made Tapan angry. Bikash, Tapan and some of their supporters suddenly attacked us with sticks, leaving the five of us badly injured," he added.

Kotwali cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge Sikdar Akkas Ali said Radha's body was sent to Jessore General Hospital morgue for
autopsy.

The officer-in-charge said two men were detained in connection with the beating but no case was lodged.

"We are currently conducting primary investigation into the matter. Legislative actions will be taken if a lawsuit is filed," added OC Sikdar.

Venezuela president rejects vote suspension claims
[Iran Press TV] Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has rejected claims that he is considering the suspension of the country's legislative elections expected to be held later this year..

"Rain, thunder or lightning, this country is going to have parliamentary elections in 2015," Maduro said on Wednesday. The vote must be held before the year is up.

Earlier on Wednesday, Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles accused Maduro of attempting to cancel the parliamentary vote over fears of a coup.

Maduro had hinted at the possibility that the opposition would use the election as an excuse to destabilize the situation in the country, but said that voters would hand Caracas a big victory.

Last month, Maduro said that Venezuela had foiled a coup attempt financed by the United States, which could have resulted in an aerial attack against the country's presidential palace.

Also in February, Venezuela incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
Caracas' mayor Antonio Ledezma after accusing him of being involved in efforts for a US-funded coup against the government.

This comes as the approval rating of Maduro's Socialist government dropped to 22 percent back in January, the lowest the party has seen since 1999. The country is struggling with a 60-percent inflation rate.

The government of Venezuela has repeatedly accused the opposition of trying to stage a coup d'état in the South American country with the backing of Washington.

Russian Bombers Force Commercial Flights Over Ireland To Divert Midair
Two Russian bombers forced commercial airline traffic flying in and out of Ireland to divert midair. The Tupolev Tu-95 bombers flew just off Ireland's coast, resulting in civilian planes changing route or being grounded because the Russian warplanes were crossing commercial traffic airways. They were eventually intercepted by British Typhoon jets.

The incursion occurred on Feb. 18 but was reported only Wednesday by Irish authorities. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had warned the Russian ambassador about a similar incident that occurred two weeks earlier. Ireland had sought assurances that similar incidents would not happen again.
Too bad the Champ wasn't there at the time. He could have waved or taken a selfie from the Royal County Down greens.

The Grand Turk
Marie harfs Turkish PM's New York visit
[Hurriyet Daily News] U.S. State Department spokesperson Marie Harf was taken aback on March 4 when a news hound questioned her about a visit to New York by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, saying she did not know anything about the visit.

During a daily press briefing in Washington, a local news hound started to ask about Davutoglu's visit to meet with investors, which was ongoing at the time of the briefing.

"Currently, the Turkish prime minister, the foreign minister and the deputy prime minister are all in New York and they will stay there for about two or three days. It looks like they are not coming to D.C," the news hound said.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
just as he started his question, Harf interrupted him and said she "hadn't heard that."
"There is no meeting scheduled with Turkish officials, right?" the news hound asked.

"I can check. I'm sorry, I hadn't heard that. I can check," said Harf, who appeared confused.
Ask yourself, is this really the best our State Department can do? Davutoglu is probably meeting with the 'Foundation' to go over his latest contributions. It is tax time you know. Of course a former Klingon intelligence analyst and future Clinton administration appointee might not care to consult her visitor's roster or discuss the meeting. As far as appearing clueless and detached, she's a natural at giving upright primates a bad name.

Senate elections: Fata MNAs challenge presidential ordinance in SC
[DAWN] MNAs from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) have challenged the passing of the presidential ordinance concerning the voting procedure in senate elections in both the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court.

The petition adopted the stance that the election method instituted by the presidential ordinance should be reversed and the Fata senate elections should be conducted according to the method of voting employed in previous elections.

The presidential ordinance issued on Wednesday night, only a few hours before the senate election, permits Fata MNAs to only cast one vote, unlike the previous method outlined by the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) that allowed tribal senators to cast four votes.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
despite the promulgation of the presidential ordinance, the ECP did not change the voting procedure, causing confusion.

#1  Liberals never understood power politics and bluffing. They do, however, understand that Americenas are impatient and if they can poo-poo something as not instantly usable they can turn public opinion (see fusion power which is always 20 years away, or drilling in Anwar which won't produce oil for 10 years, or opposition to the Iraq war which Bush was clear would take a long time).

U.S. aircraft carrier and part of its escort "sunk" by French submarine during drills off Florida
If you thought aircraft carriers were invincible you were wrong.

On Mar. 4, the French Ministry of Defense released some interesting details, about the activity conducted by one of its nuclear-powered attack submarine (SNA) in the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean.

According to French MoD website (that is no longer online, even if you can still find a cached version of the article titled "Le SNA Saphir en entraĂŽnement avec l'US Navy au large de la Floride"), the Saphir submarine has recently taken part in a major exercise with the U.S. Navy off Florida.

#1  This was a regular feature of US Navy wargames in the 70's thru 90's timeframe. It was never publicized because, basically, don't PO the Admiral.

#2  Regular occurrence with ASW games. We subs were forced to do some things (make noise) so the skimmers could say they found us. Otherwise, the first time the surface units would know a sub was in their area would be when ships blow up. Of course that also goes for subs that aren't up to snuff also. We would sneak up on "the other side" regularly.

#3  To a submariner, there are two kinds of vessels: submarines and targets.

#4  Considering USN ASW has also deteriorated over the past twenty years, it's not surprising.

You have to come to the surface sometime, bubblehead...

#5  Sounds like an ally sub switching sides in the middle of an operation. Sounds difficult, especially if only the sub and the enemy knew.
