US warns pilots in Africa of weapon fire due to Ethiopia's war
[FoxNews] The United States is warning pilots that planes operating at one of Africa’s busiest airports could be "directly or indirectly exposed to ground weapons fire and/or surface-to-air fire" as Ethiopia’s war nears the capital, Addis Ababa.

The Federal Aviation Administration advisory issued Wednesday cites the "ongoing clashes" between Ethiopian forces and fighters from the northern Tigray region, which have killed thousands of people in a year of war. The U.S. this week urged its citizens in Ethiopia to "leave now," saying there should be no expectation of an Afghanistan-style evacuation.

The Addis Ababa international airport is the hub for the state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, a symbol of Ethiopia's former status as one of the world's most rapidly growing economies before the war. The airline in recent years became Africa's largest and best-managed carrier, turning Addis Ababa into the gateway to the continent. Addis Ababa is also the continent's diplomatic capital as home of the African Union.

The FAA advisory notes no reports of disruptions at Bole International Airport and "no indication of an intent to threaten civil aviation," but it says the risk to approaching and departing planes could increase if the Tigray fighters encircle the capital.

The Tigray fighters "likely possess a variety of anti-aircraft capable weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank weapons, low-caliber anti-aircraft artillery, and man-portable air-defense systems," or MANPADS, which could reach up to 25,000 feet above ground level, the FAA advisory says.

In an acknowledgment of Bole airport's importance for onward travel for the African continent and beyond, the U.K. Minister for Africa Vicky Ford last week told reporters that Britain now advises against all travel to Ethiopia apart from the airport for departures and transfers.

The Tigray forces who had long dominated the national government before current Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018 have approached Addis Ababa in recent weeks and joined up with another armed group, the Oromo Liberation Army, with the aim of pressing Abiy to step aside.

The Tigray forces also say they are pressuring Ethiopia’s government to lift a monthslong blockade on the Tigray region, which includes an Ethiopian government restriction on flights over Tigray. No food, medicine or other humanitarian aid has entered Tigray, a region of some 6 million people, for more than a month since Ethiopia's military resumed airstrikes there for the first time since June.

Efforts by an AU envoy, former Nigerian president Olesegun Obasanjo, and U.S. envoy Jeffrey Feltman continue to nudge the warring sides to agree to a cease-fire and talks.

#1  Back before 9/11 the FAA intelligence cell was about 20 people. As an itinerant cargo carrier it was easy to call and find out which direction ground fire was lightest and plan takeoffs accordingly. After 9/11 the cell was flooded with alphabet types and it was almost impossible to get real time usable information to the field

Britain
UK to label entirety of Hamas as a terrorist organization
[Jpost] Since 2001 the UK has solely recognized Hamas's military wing as a terrorist organization. Now the entire apparatus is designated as such.

The British Parliament is expected to pass the terror designation of Hamas' political wing into law in the coming week. Those who openly align with Hamas in Great Britain could face up to a 14-year jail sentence.

The United States, Canada, the European Union, Israel, and Japan have similarly designated Hamas in its entirety as a terror organization. Australia, New Zealand, and Paraguay have only applied the terror label to Hamas's military wing.

Jonathan Schanzer, senior vice president at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said that Australia was deliberating whether to similarly outlaw Hamas's political wing.

"This could tip the balance in Canberra," Schanzer said.

Patel is expected to address the significant policy change during a security speech she is scheduled to deliver later in the day at The Heritage Foundation in Washington.

According to an excerpt from her speech, Patel will explain that “Hamas has significant terrorist capability, including access to extensive and sophisticated weaponry, as well as terrorist training facilities, and it has long been involved in significant terrorist violence."

The legitimization of Hamas' political wing, "creates an artificial distinction between various parts of the organization – it is right that the listing is updated to reflect this," Patel wrote.

“If we tolerate extremism, it will erode the rock of security," Patel wrote, adding that Britain's Jewish community feels especially threatened by Hamas.

“This is an important step, especially for the Jewish community. Hamas is fundamentally and rabidly antisemitic. Antisemitism is an enduring evil which I will never tolerate. Jewish people routinely feel unsafe – at school, in the streets, when they worship, in their homes, and online," Patel wrote in her speech.

"This step will strengthen the case against anyone who waves a Hamas flag in the United Kingdom, an act that is bound to make Jewish people feel unsafe. Anyone who supports or invites support for a proscribed organization is breaking the law. That now includes Hamas in whatever form it takes," she added.

#2  Within the Hamas constitution there is an article asserting that it is an arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Ikhwan as an organization has never disavowed the use of force. While the UK action is long overdue, the UK would do well to declare the British-based Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization because it has long been an asylum for Ikhwan terrorists.

#4  The Times of Israel:

The United Kingdom’s decision Friday to designate the entirety of Hamas as a terror organization and outlaw support for the group is a major blow for the Islamist group, which carries out significant fundraising there, Channel 13 reported.

The UK had proscribed the terror group’s military wing — the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades — in 2001. But Hamas’ political leadership remained technically in the clear until now.

This enabled Hamas to ostensibly raise funds for institutions like Gaza’s Islamic University, even though it is the leading facility for advancing the technology used in Hamas missile and other weapons development, the report said.

UK government proposing law to strip British citizenship without notice
[Rudaw] The UK government is seeking new powers to make it legal to strip Britons with dual nationality of their citizenship without the need to inform them beforehand, with many warning of a two-tier citizenship with significant consequences for British citizens stranded in Syria.

Clause 9 of the UK’s new proposed Nationality and Borders Bill, which is currently moving towards its third reading in the British Parliament, would essentially exempt the need to give notice of the removal of citizenship unless "reasonably practical", meaning that ministers would be able to strip British citizens of their citizenship without informing them beforehand.

Commenting on the clause ("Notice of decision to deprive a person of citizenship"), the British Home Office said, "British citizenship is a privilege, not a right. Deprivation of citizenship on conducive grounds is rightly reserved for those who pose a threat to the UK or whose conduct involves very high harm. The nationality and borders bill will amend the law so citizenship can be deprived where it is not practicable to give notice, for example if there is no way of communicating with the person."

Last month, it was revealed that the UK repatriated three British children from a camp housing families suspected of being affiliated with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS) group in northeastern Syria (Rojava), where an estimated 8,500 foreign nationals remain.

In 2013, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism found that "at least 43 people" had been stripped of their British citizenship for undefined terror related justifications, and there have been several high profile examples of British citizens in Syria having their citizenship revoked.

Earlier this year, the British-born ISIS member Shamima Begum lost the appeal to restore her citizenship after it was revoked in 2019, with the Home Office citing security concerns. Begum was 15-years old when she left London to join ISIS in Syria in 2015.

In May, Middle East Eye reported the case of a British man who was finally able to return to the UK after being stranded abroad for four years, after the government was found to have wrongly assessed that he was entitled to Bangladeshi citizenship.

To many, it appears the UK government is washing its hands of citizens in the region by revoking their citizenship, particularly as this proposed amendment was quietly added, and the government is facing accusations of creating an ill-considered two-tier citizenship whereby the stripping of one’s nationality can only be applied if they are "eligible" for the citizenship of another country.

There are several recent examples of Britons in al-Roj camp in Syria having their citizenship removed.

British MPs are continuing to consider the government’s immigration reform plans, which would also dramatically amend the current system of seeking asylum in the UK, seeing people who arrive through irregular means or without pre-authorisation imprisoned.

In her recent Conservative Party conference speech, the British Home Secretary Priti Patel stressed the intention of the government’s New Plan for Immigration to "provide sanctuary to those in need through safe and legal resettlement routes", but the Bill makes no provision for replacing the EU’s Dublin III accords, and the number of other ways to "legally" arrive in the UK are few and far between.

On average, 5-10,000 refugees are selected by the United Nations

High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to be resettled in the UK each year. In October, the UNHCR published their full legal opinion on the Bill, concluding that a policy based on claiming asylum in the first safe country reached would be unworkable, "adding more strain to developing countries", and fundamentally at odds with the Government’s commitment to upholding the UK’s international obligations.

US jurors to hear closing arguments in ‘Unite the Right’ trial
[IsraelTimes] Jurors in the Unite the Right civil trial are set to hear closing arguments today in a lawsuit that seeks to hold white nationalists accountable for the violence that erupted in Charlottesville in 2017.

Lawyers for nine people who were physically injured or emotionally scarred during the two days of chaos allege that the defendants conspired to commit racially motivated violence. Attorneys for the white nationalists say there was no conspiracy, and their use of racial epithets and blustery talk in chat rooms before the rally is protected by the First Amendment.

Hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville on August 11-12, 2017, ostensibly to protest the city’s plans to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

During a march on the University of Virginia campus, white nationalists surrounded counterprotesters and threw burning tiki torches at them.
Were they Democratic Party activists pretending to be Republicans this time, too?
The following day, an avowed admirer of Adolf Hitler

rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one woman and injuring dozens more.

The driver of the car, James Alex Fields Jr. of Maumee, Ohio, is serving life in prison for murder and hate crimes and lost an appeal of his conviction this week. Fields is one of 24 individuals and organizations named as defendants in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages and a judgment that the defendants violated the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights. It is being funded by Integrity First for America, a nonprofit civil rights organization.

#2  I'm a stamp collector, and Turkey is one of the countries I collect. The first-class postage rate in Turkey in 1985 was 100 Turkish lira (US was 22c). By 2000, the first-class rate in Turkey was 150,000 Turkish Lira. It peaked at about 250,000 lira in 2003, then they revalued the lira. Looks like they're going through the same inflation spiral once more. Remember, money is power, and the easiest way to destroy "old money" is through inflation.

Iraq
Iraq, KRG return over 400 citizens from Belarus-Poland border
[Rudaw] Over 400 Iraqi and Kurdish migrants colonists who have been stuck on the Belarus-Poland border for weeks voluntarily returned to Erbil International Airport on Thursday, with their arrival announced in a statement by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) earlier in the day.

"Today at 6:30pm, a plane from Belarus will arrive in Erbil, capital city of the Kurdistan Region, carrying nearly 430 Iraqi and Kurdish migrants colonists who have been stuck on Belarus and Poland borders for a long time," read the statement, published on Thursday.

The KRG also said that there are currently over 20,000 migrants colonists stuck on the borders of Belarus, Poland and Lithuania. Jotiar Adil, spokesperson for the KRG, previously said that at least 8,000 are from the Kurdistan Region.

The flight was organized by both Erbil and Baghdad. After landing at Erbil International Airport, the plane took Iraqi migrants colonists to Baghdad. According to the KRG statement, over 460 migrants colonists have requested to return to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Adil told news hounds on Thursday that nearly 95 percent of today's returnees are from the Kurdistan Region.

Ahmed al-Sahaf, spokesperson for the Iraqi foreign ministry, told state media on Thursday that their consular teams in Belarus are continuing to register migrants colonists who want to return voluntarily. The process of registration began a week ago.

KRG representation in Poland said in a tweet that the plane has left Minsk.

The migrant crisis has been a hot topic of international media over recent weeks as border tensions have deteriorated between Belarus and Europe. Minsk has been accused of exploiting these people, mostly made up of Kurds attempting to reach Europe, and using them as a trump card against the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
. Poland has refused to take in any refugees, instead calling on them to return home.

Belarus said on Thursday that there are currently around 7,000 migrants colonists on its soil, adding that nearly 2,000 are camped on the Polish border.

Many Kurdish migrants colonists are young people, leaving the country in search of jobs and opportunities they feel they cannot get at home where unemployment is high and political tensions and instability leave them with little hope for their future.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday said that the migrants colonists are being "exploited" by "human traffickers." He acknowledged that the Region has had economic difficulties, brought about by low oil prices, the pandemic, and budget disputes with Baghdad, but said his cabinet has made progress with reforms and job creation. "Many want to go to Europa

Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr urges militias to purge 'undisciplined' members
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Populist Iraqi Shia holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
...hereditary Iraqi holy man and leader of a political movement in Iraq. He had his hereditary rival, al-Khoei, assassinated only a few hours after the holy rival's appearance out of exile in 2003. Formerly an Iranian catspaw, lately he's gagged over some of their more outlandish antics, then went back to catspawry...
urged the country’s paramilitaries on Thursday to purge what he called undisciplined members and for non-state gangs to hand over their weapons.

Al-Sadr’s remarks come after Iran-backed Shia Moslem militia were accused of an attempt to kill outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi by armed drone on Nov. 7.

The militias are disputing the result of an October general election that handed them a crushing defeat and have also staged sit-ins in Baghdad which turned violent mostly peaceful this month.

Al-Sadr, who commands his own militia but opposes all foreign influence in Iraq, including that of Iran, is seen as the main Shia rival of the paramilitaries Tehran has backed.

"You must step back in order to regain the trust of the people," al-Sadr said in a statement delivered to news cameras from his base in the southern holy city of Najaf.

"What you’re doing right now will tarnish your history and increase your alienation from the people."

Al-Sadr did not refer explicitly to recent events, but addressed his message to what he called the losing parties in Iraq’s election.

He called on Iraq’s state paramilitary grouping the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), which is dominated by the Iran-aligned factions, to purge "undisciplined elements" and for non-state gangs to dissolve themselves and lay down their weapons.

Al-Sadr will likely have a big say in the formation of the next Iraqi government, a prospect that worries his main rivals the Iran-backed groups, according to Iraqi officials and independent analysts.

"If you want to participate in forming the next government, you must hold those corrupt among you to account," he added.

Prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric calls for pro-Iran militias to disband
[IsraelTimes] Iraq’s influential Shiite holy man who emerged as a winner in last month’s general elections calls on the country’s myriad pro-Iran
...Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979...
Shiite armed factions to disband if they want to join his upcoming government.

Muqatada al-Sadr also asks the factions to hand over their weapons to the government-sanctioned umbrella known as Popular Mobilization Forces. In turn, he also asks the PMF to "purify" its ranks from "undisciplined elements" and surrender "corrupt individuals" to the judiciary.

The militias are certain to reject the demands, which in turn could complicate al-Sadr’s efforts to form a government after the vote. It could also increase tensions between Shiites who support the pro-Iran factions and al-Sadr’s own followers.

The pro-Iran factions lost a significant number of parliament seats in the October 10 elections and have called the vote fraudulent, rejecting the results. Their supporters have held protests outside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, home to government offices and foreign embassies.

The protests turned deadly earlier this month, when demonstrators tried to enter the Green Zone, demanding a ballot recount. One protester affiliated with the militias was killed in an exchange of fire, for which the militias blamed Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

Tensions were further ratcheted up after a failed liquidation attempt against al-Kadhimi at his residence the next day. The prime minister suffered a light cut and several of his guards were maimed in the November 7 attack by armed drones on his Green Zone residence.

There was no responsibility claim for the attack, although suspicion immediately fell on the armed factions.

"Your losses can’t be a pretext for ruining the democratic process," al-Sadr says at a rare presser today, addressing the factions.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
UN nuclear watchdog chief to visit Tehran on Nov. 23: IAEA
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi will hold meetings with Iranian officials in Tehran on Tuesday, the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed on Thursday, more than two months after Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
promised to host him.

Behrouz Kamalvandi, front man for the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, told state media on Wednesday Grossi would meet Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and nuclear energy chief Mohammad Eslami. The IAEA did not say in its statement whom Grossi would meet.

"We can confirm that Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi will meet with high-level Iranian government officials in Tehran on Tuesday, 23 November," the IAEA said.

The visit will be on the eve of a quarterly meeting of the IAEA’s Board of Governors and before indirect talks between Iran and the United States on Nov. 29 on reviving their nuclear deal.

Two IAEA reports to member states on Wednesday detailed a range of conflicts between the agency and Iran, ranging from Tehran’s continued failure to explain the origin of uranium particles found at apparently old but undeclared sites, to its refusal to let the IAEA re-install surveillance cameras at a workshop hit by apparent sabotage in June.

One of the reports also said Iranian security officials had continued to subject IAEA inspectors to "excessively invasive searches, which resulted in them feeling intimidated."

Grossi told a news conference on Nov. 12 that aside from technical exchanges with Eslami this will be a first opportunity to have a "serious conversation" with the administration of hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, who took office in August. He added that it was "astonishing" it had taken this long.

Amid ongoing cyberwar, Iran uses new tactic: Doxing Israeli foes
[IsraelTimes] In tacit threat, Tehran releases the name, photo and address of an Israeli cyber security expert who specializes in Iranian hacking efforts.

Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
on Wednesday released the name, photograph, phone number and home address of an Israeli cyber security expert who specializes in Iranian hacking efforts — its latest gambit in an ongoing cyberwar.

The information was published by Fars News, an Iranian outlet operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The release of the information, or doxing, served as a tacit threat to both the cyber security specialist himself and to other Israelis who perform similar work.

In addition to his name, phone number and home address, Fars also published the cyber security expert’s birth date, email address, social media handles and a photograph of his apartment building. Most of the information appears to have been gleaned from his social media accounts and other open sources.

The Israeli man appeared to have been targeted by the IRGC because of his work in the Israel Defense Forces, in Military Intelligence’s cyber-focused Unit 8200; and in the civilian world, for a cyber security firm, Clear Sky, which has uncovered a number of hacking efforts by Iran.

Israel and Iran have for years been involved in a largely quiet cyberwar, which occasionally bubbles to the surface.

Last month, Iran accused Israel of being behind a cyberattack on the country’s gas stations, knocking them out of service for a week.

Days later, an Iranian-linked hacking group, Black Shadow, targeted an Israeli hosting company, temporarily shutting down a number of websites and stealing user data from "Atraf," an Israeli LGBT dating site.

Black Shadow also stole a vast trove of information from Israeli insurance company Shirbit last year and then sold it on the dark web when the firm refused to pay a ransom.

In 2010 the Stuxnet virus — believed to have been engineered by Israel and the US — infected Iran’s nuclear program, causing a series of breakdowns in centrifuges used to enrich uranium.

Iran disconnected much of its infrastructure from the internet after the Stuxnet virus.

Iran-backed hackers accused of targeting ’broad range of victims’ in US

[IsraelTimes] American cyber firm says Iran targeting Israel in espionage attacks; Microsoft reports 6 Iranian groups deploying ransomware in past year

Hackers linked to the Iranian government have been targeting a "broad range of victims" inside the United States, including by deploying ransomware, according to an advisory issued Wednesday by American, British and Australian officials.

The advisory says that in recent months, Iran has exploited computer vulnerabilities exposed by hackers before they can be fixed and targeted entities in the transportation, health care and public health sectors. The attackers leveraged the initial hack for additional operations, such as data exfiltration, ransomware and extortion, according to the advisory. The group has used the same Microsoft Exchange vulnerability in Australia, officials say.

The warning is notable because even though ransomware attacks remain prevalent in the US, most of the significant ones in the past year have been attributed to Russia-based criminal hacker gangs rather than Iranian hackers.

Government officials aren’t the only ones noticing the Iranian activity: Tech giant Microsoft announced Tuesday that it had seen six different groups in Iran deploying ransomware since last year.

Microsoft said one of the groups spends significant time and energy trying to build rapport with their intended victims before targeting them with spear-phishing campaigns. The group uses fake conference invitations or interview requests and frequently masquerade as officials at think tanks in Washington, DC, as a cover, Microsoft said.

Once rapport is built and a malicious link is sent, the Iranians are extra pushy at trying to get their victims to click on it, said James Elliott, a member of the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center.

"These guys are the biggest pain in the rear. Every two hours they’re sending an email," Elliott said at the Cyberwarcon cybersecurity conference Tuesday.

Earlier this year Facebook announced it had found Iranian hackers using "sophisticated fake online personas" to build trust with targets and get them to click on malicious links and often posed as recruiters of defense and aerospace companies.

Researchers at the American Crowdstrike cybersecurity firm said they and competitors began seeing this type of Iranian activity last year.

The Iranian ransomware attacks, unlike those sponsored by North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
’s government, are not designed to generate revenue so much as for espionage, to sow disinformation, to harass and embarrass foes — Israel, chief among them —and to essentially wear down their targets, Crowdstrike researchers said at the Cyberwarcon event.

"While these operations will use ransom notes and dedicated leak sites demanding hard cryptocurrency, we’re really not seeing any viable effort at actual currency generation," Crowdstrike global threat analysis director Kate Blankenship said.

Crowdstrike considers Iran to be the trendsetter in this novel "low form" of cyberattack, which typically involves paralyzing a network with ransomware, stealing information and then leaking it online. The researchers call the method "lock and leak." It is less visible, less costly and "provides more room for deniability," Blankenship said.
