Egyptian Man With Star Of David Tattoo Charged With Spying For Israel
[Ynet] Shenouda Ashraf Sobhy Zekry contacted Israelis on Facebook, asked about illegally immigrating to Israel.

The Egyptian man who was locked away
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
for his Israeli ties was charged on Monday with spying for Israel.

Shenouda Ashraf Sobhy Zekry, 24, was also charged with accepting money from a foreign country to commit an act that harms Egypt's national interests, and contacting a foreign country to obtain state secrets. He was also charged with falsifying an official document and possessing ammunition without the proper permits.

Zekry was arrested on Sunday in the city of Suhaj in southern Egypt for corresponding with an Israeli citizen on Facebook, liking Israeli pages belonging to the Mossad and the IDF Spokesman on the social media network, criticizing Egypt and attempting to visit Israel via South Sudan. He also has a Star of David tattoo on his arm.

Police who searched his home found the ammunition, as well as a Hebrew-Arabic dictionary, a visa for South Sudan, and business cards for the South Sudanese embassy in Egypt and for an Egyptian travel agency in Suhaj.

Local authorities said they found photos of soldiers, officers and Israeli citizens waving Israeli flags on Zekry's computer.

According to media reports, Zekry worked as a driver in the Sharm el-Sheikh area in the southern Sinai Peninsula in 2011, where he met many Israeli. This, according to the report, made him consider moving to Israel.

Zekry also met an Israeli woman called "Nikola", with whom he used to meet. Nikola reportedly introduced Zekry to an IDF officer. Zekry's father also said that his son told him about his acquaintance with the young Israeli woman.

Zekry admitted to the charges attributed to him in his investigation, and said he was willing to accept the death penalty. He claimed he does not regret his actions because he loves Israel and detests Egypt.

The investigation also found that he was trying to find out in his encounters in Sharm el-Sheikh whether he could illegally immigrate to Israel. He also reportedly arrived at the Israeli embassy in Cairo in an attempt to get a visa to the country, but was unsuccessful.

The Egyptian paper al-Youm al-Sabaa published photos of the Hebrew-Arabic dictionary that Zekry said he used in order to contact Israelis on Facebook.

Caribbean-Latin America
Soldiers storm Venezuelan protesters' stronghold
[Al Ahram] Venezuelan troops stormed a Caracas square on Sunday to evict protesters who turned it into a stronghold during six weeks of demonstrations against President Nicolas Maduro.

National Guard soldiers fired tear gas and turned water cannons on hundreds of demonstrators who hurled rocks and some petrol bombs before abandoning Plaza Altamira, in affluent east Caracas, which has been the scene of daily festivities.

Some soldiers rode into the square on cycle of violences, rounding up a dozen demonstrators, Rooters witnesses saw. One flashed a "V" for victory as he was driven away, another shouted "Help!"

The troops then began demolishing protesters' barricades, apparently carrying out Maduro's vow to retake the square.

"We are going to carry on liberating spaces taken by the protesters," the 51-year-old successor to late leader Hugo Chavez said in a speech at a pro-government rally in a different part of Caracas on Sunday.

Militant opposition leaders and students have been urging Venezuelans onto the streets to protest issues ranging from crime and shortages of goods to the presence of Cuban advisers in Venezuela's army and other state institutions.

Earlier on Sunday, thousands marched towards the Carlota military air base in the latest daily demonstration against the socialist government. The protests began in early February.

"I spend five or six hours in a queue just to buy two packets of flour, or two bottles of cooking oil," said pensioner Pedro Perez, 64, in the opposition rally.

"Also, I'm protesting over insecurity and the lies this government tells Venezuelans, bringing Cuban soldiers here ... This is an ungovernable country, we can't carry on like this."

#1  No dollars have been released to the private sector for 3 months or so. Since Venezuela imports 75% of it's food, shortages are imminent. The government will be using their dollars to buy basics such as can to avoid the worst. But even rice is not getting scarce. And coffee, coffee is getting scarce. That's like Texas running out of beef.

EU and US impose sanctions after Crimea vote
[DAWN] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and the United States on Monday slapped sanctions on top Russians and Ukrainians deemed responsible for a breakaway vote in Crimea that has fanned the worst East-West standoff since the Cold War.

Official results from Sunday's disputed referendum showed 96.77 per cent of voters in the mostly Russian-speaking region of Ukraine had opted for Kremlin rule in what would be the most radical redrawing of the map of Europe since Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia.

Crimea's politicians on Monday formally asked to join Russia and vowed to disband Ukrainian military units stationed across the peninsula.

Crimea has been under effective control of Russian troops and pro-Kremlin militia since the start of the month.

Kiev and the West consider the secession vote to be illegitimate and the reaction from Brussels and Washington was both swift and tough.

EU foreign ministers unveiled travel bans and asset freezes against 13 Russian officials and eight Ukrainian officials from Crimea.

The 28-nation bloc did not name those sanctioned but Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius tweeted there would be "more EU measures in (a) few days".

The 21 were officially targeted "for undermining the illusory sovereignty of Ukraine".

The EU's punitive measures were followed minutes later by a White House announcement that it was imposing financial sanctions on seven top Russian government officials and politicians in reprisal for the Kremlin's incursion.

"We have been guided by a fundamental principle," US President Barack Obama
Because I won...
said at the White House.

"The future of Ukraine must be decided by the people of Ukraine. That means Ukraine's illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected and international law must be upheld."

The White House said Ukraine's ousted pro-Kremlin president Viktor Yanukovych and Crimea's self-declared premier Sergiy Aksyonov were both on the US list.

The Russians targeted include upper house of parliament speaker Valentina Matviyenko and Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, responsible for overseeing Russia's military and industrial sector.

"These are clearly people who are very close to President (Vladimir) Putin," said one US official on condition of anonymity.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea urges North to stop 'provocative' rocket tests
[Egypt Independent] South Korea urged North Korea Monday to stop what it called "provocative" and potentially dangerous rocket and missile tests, a day after Pyongyang test-fired 25 projectiles into the sea.

The North Sunday fired the volley of rockets into the Sea of Japan (East Sea), the latest in a series of launches in recent weeks that have sparked criticism from Seoul and Washington.

The show of force is apparently intended to express anger at the South's continuing joint military exercises with its ally the United States.

"The North should stop actions that cause military tension and unnerve its neighbours," Seoul's defence ministry front man Kim Min-Seok told news hounds.

"Provocative action made without any prior notifications... can pose significant danger to sea vessels and aircraft passing by the area," he added.

The South's military was closely watching the North's troop movements, Kim said, citing the possibility of more rocket launches.

The rockets fired on Sunday were ageing versions of Russian-developed Frog rockets, he said, noting that the North fired more than normally expected.

The US State Department called on Pyongyang to refrain from "provocative actions that aggravate tensions".

Beijing expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
earlier this month after the North test-fired a rocket into the flight path of a Chinese airliner.

China's special envoy Wu Dawei arrived in Pyongyang Monday, the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a brief report which did not specify the trip's purpose.

The annual South Korean-US military drills started in late February and will run until mid-April.

The North has habitually slammed the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises -- along with other military drills south of the border -- as rehearsals for an invasion.

Seoul and Washington say they are purely defensive.

Lithuania Claims Diplomat is a Russian Spy
[An Nahar] Lithuania on Monday alleged that a Russian spy worked undercover at Moscow's embassy in Vilnius, offering bribes for information on EU ties with former Soviet states.

According to the claims from the Lithuanian State Security Department -- the Baltic nation's intelligence agency -- diplomat Valery Katula worked for Russia's GRU military intelligence service.

He is alleged to have tried to recruit an unnamed Lithuanian official and offered bribes for information on Lithuania's European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
presidency in the last half of 2013.

"Katula attempted to recruit a Lithuanian civil servant to provide classified and other sensitive information about Lithuania's presidency of the European Union," the Lithuanian State Security Department said in a report released Monday.

"There were promises of money in exchange for information."

It added that it had taken "measures" against Katula to "prevent further intelligence activities", without elaborating.

The report alleged that Katula sought information on foreign officials' visits to Lithuania, as well as on the possibility of signing EU association agreements with Eastern Partnership countries -- ex-Soviet states including Ukraine.

Lithuania played a key role in efforts to seal such an association deal with Ukraine during its stint as EU chair last year.

Ukraine's then pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych ditched the deal at the Vilnius summit in November, sparking the protests that led to his ouster in February.

Putin Signs Decree Recognizing Crimea as Independent State as Region Applies to Join Russia
Unexpectedly.
[An Nahar] Crimea's regional assembly on Monday declared independence from Ukraine and applied to join Russia, saying all Ukrainian state property on the peninsula would be nationalized.

Later on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
signed a decree formally recognizing Crimea as an independent state following its vote to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation.

The Kremlin's official website quoted Putin's decree as recognizing "the Republic of Crimea... as a sovereign and independent state."

It was issued "considering the expression of the will of the people of Crimea at the general Crimean referendum" on Sunday, it said.

The decree added that it entered into force from the moment of its signature and included the time stamp of 10:30 pm (1830 GMT).

Putin is due on Tuesday to address both houses of parliament about the crisis following the announcement of targeted U.S. and EU sanctions against top Russians and Ukrainians deemed responsible for the breakaway vote, as well as pro-Kremlin forces' effective seizure of the Black Sea peninsula at the start of the month.

Earlier, a decree approved by Crimea's assembly said "the republic of Crimea appeals to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
and to all countries of the world to recognize it as an independent state."

"The Republic of Crimea... applies to the Russian Federation to accept the Republic of Crimea as a member of the Russian Federation," it said.

Crimea's local prime minister Sergiy Aksyonov also tweeted that starting on March 30, the region would switch to Moscow time (GMT +4), two hours ahead of the current time in Crimea.

The document was approved by all 85 deputies present in the 100-seat assembly, after a disputed referendum on Sunday in which Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to join Russia.

"The Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea... declares Crimea an independent sovereign state -- the Republic of Crimea," the document said.

It said that from Monday, Ukrainian laws would no longer apply in Crimea and decisions taken by the Ukrainian state since the ouster of Kremlin-backed president Viktor Yanukovych last month had no authority.

"The activities of state institutions of Ukraine on the territory of Crimea are finished and their powers, their property and their budgets are transferred to the state organs of the Republic of Crimea," it said.

"All establishments, businesses and other organizations of Ukraine or with Ukrainian participation on the territory of Crimea will belong to Crimea," it added.

It was unclear if this would also include Ukrainian military bases.

Aksyonov also said in a tweet that 500 Ukrainian soldiers had left their posts in Sevastopol, home to Russia's Black Sea fleet.

Earlier on Monday, he said that 96.6 percent of voters casting ballots in a weekend poll chose to break off from Ukraine and join Russia.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan is Worse Than Army, Arch-Rival Says
[An Nahar] An influential Mohammedan holy man locked in a bitter feud with the Turkish government has said the pressure piled on his movement now is "10 times worse" than in the era of military coups, in a rare interview published Monday.

U.S.-exiled Fethullah Gulen stands accused by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet...
of using his influence in Turkey's police and judiciary to instigate a corruption probe to topple his Islamic-rooted government.

"What we are seeing today is 10 times worse than what we saw during the military coups," Gulen told the daily Zaman, affiliated with his movement.

Gulen's Hizmet (Service) movement used to be an important backer of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP), which came to power in 2002.

The two worked together to curb the influence of the army, the self-declared guardians of the secular state, which staged three coups since 1960 and forced out an Islamist government in 1997.

But the alliance shattered in mid-December, when dozens of the premier's political and business allies were detained in police raids on bribery and corruption allegations.

The scandal, which brought down four ministers and prompted a cabinet reshuffle, has evolved into the most serious challenge yet to Erdogan's 11-year-rule.

The premier has labeled the corruption probe a "dirty plot" by supporters of the holy man to undermine his government ahead of local elections on March 30 and a presidential vote in August, but Gulen has repeatedly denied any involvement.

Erdogan himself has been implicated in the corruption controversy with leaked recordings in which he can allegedly be heard talking to his son about hiding large sums of money.

Erdogan has responded to the graft probe by publicly attacking Gulen and sacking hundreds of police and prosecutors believed to be linked to his ally-turned-rival.

The AKP-dominated parliament has also passed a law to shut down a network of private preparatory schools, many of which are run by Hizmet and are a major source of income for the movement.

Otherwise Eric Holder would sue them.

#10  In a sarcastic way, of course. I personally believe this isn't even the tip of the iceberg, especially if you count up all the illegal votes across the country. Personally, I know of very few who voted for Obean, yet he seemed to eke out a victory. Hmm.
Posted by: gorb || 03/18/2014 15:47 Comments || Top||

#11  Please note that this was the local NBC station perusing the voter rolls, verifying the 94 non-citizens who registered and voted, and reporting the results. Personally, I'm impressed.

Are there more non-citizens doing so, as well as citizen snowbirds voting in more than one jurisdiction, imaginary and dead citizens voting, and party operatives voting on behalf of the unwitting but law abiding? I'm quite certain that it's so. This is only a first step to get the boards of elections to check their voter rolls, and the state legislature to mandate cleaning the rolls at the state level... not to mention requiring photo IDs to vote in the future.

The first step is the hardest, 'tis said.

... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
only SI Zulfiqar Ali while Inspector Idrees, DSP Asghar and SHO Shahid managed to move away from the scene.

Muzaffargarh self-immolation: 10 days for police to submit report
[DAWN] The Supreme Court Monday directed a three-member investigating team to conduct the probe of the self-immolation of an alleged rape victim in Muzaffargarh and ordered it to submit a report before it within 10 days, DawnNews reported.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, heard the hearing of the suo motu
...a legal term, from the Latin. Roughly translated it means I saw what you did, you bastard...
case relating to the self-immolation of a rape victim in Muzaffargarh.

During the hearing, the court ordered a three-member team, headed by Additional Inspector General Khalid Dad, to submit a report of the incident before it within 10 days.

The court said the girl committed self-immolation due to the local police's behavior and lack of justice on the judiciary's part.

It also said the incident reflected police's carelessness and negligence, adding that if timely measures had been taken, the incident could have been prevented.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
Inspector General (IG) Punjab Khan Beg, District Police Officer (DPO) Muzaffargarh and the Advocate General appeared in the court.

IG Punjab submitted a preliminary report of the self-immolation incident in the court.

The report said there was a financial dispute between the victim's father and the main accused in the rape and added that the suspect had earlier contracted a 'love marriage' with the victim's elder sister.

According to the victim's elder sister, the dispute between her parents and the suspect arose over the issue of sale of livestock.

The report quoted her as saying that the parents had filed a false case against the suspect.

Chief Justice Jillani asked IG Punjab whether a separate case was filed over the self-immolation incident.

He said any policeman could have stopped the girl from committing self-immolation outside the station.

Another judge present on the bench, Justice Khilji Arif, remarked as to how long it would have taken a policeman to stop a young girl from committing self-immolation.

He added that people were protesting outside the cop shoppe for long and questioned the police's lack of knowledge regarding the can of petrol and kerosene.

Justice Khilji said the lack of awareness reflected police's incompetence.

IG Punjab said two cases had been registered over the incident. He said one was registered on March 13 and the other one on March 17, respectively.

He said the Station House Officer of the relevant cop shoppe had also been nominated in the second case.

Chief Justice Jillani replied that the police had taken action only after a suo moto notice was taken by the court.

Justice Khilji said all cop shoppes are meant to have firefighting equipment and the lack of it in the particular cop shoppe was another act of incompetence on the police's part.

The court was also informed that the report of the Investigating Officer had been verified by the relevant Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The court subsequently adjourned the hearing of the case until 10 days.

Earlier last week on Thursday, a local court had granted bail to the main accused in the alleged rape, following which the girl went to the Bet Mir Hazar cop shoppe and lodged a protest with an investigation officer for favouring the accused in his report.

She had later doused her clothes with petrol and set herself on fire outside the cop shoppe in the presence of her younger brother. Some passers-by and coppers had taken her to Jatoi Civil Hospital. She had been later shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan because of her critical condition. She had succumbed to her injuries on Friday morning.
