It had to happen. 20 years ago, (when I smoked two packs a day), a co-worker objected to my smoke harming his lungs. I asked him if he burned wood in his fireplace. He didn't see how that was related.

This headline is deceptive. Many local governments out west have severely restricted the use of wood-burners, entirely independent of whatever the EPA is doing. The "lawfare" method of grinding out ever more regulations deserves a separate article of its very own.

Possession of wood should be outlawed. Wood is just unoxidized carbon, destined to become CO2 whether you burn it or it decays naturally. No different than unfired ammunition.
To ensure the future of humanity, all traces of CO2 must be removed from our collective atmosphere. Sure, the green plants will be pissed, but what have they ever done for us?
[An Nahar] When Arab Spring protests erupted in early 2011, Morocco's February 20 pro-reform movement mobilized mass demonstrations, but three years on its goals remain frustrated and regional turmoil has dampened demand for change.
The movement that once brought tens of thousands onto the streets of main cities now musters just a few dozen activists to call for democratic reforms or denounce the high cost of living.
"It does seem that as a movement, the February 20 movement hasn't gone anywhere, its demonstrations have ended, it hasn't drafted the same level of support ... that it initially attracted in early 2011," said analyst Issandr Amrani of the International Crisis Group (ICG).
Since the protest group was born, many in Morocco have watched warily as uprisings that swept away decades-old dictatorships in other North African countries, notably in Libya and Egypt, gave way to violence and political upheaval.
"That moment in early 2011 of euphoria across the Arab world is gone, and for now it appears that however unsatisfied they may be with the results a lot of Moroccans would rather not rock the boat," said Amrani.
One young activist not afraid to do so is rapper Lhaqed, an outspoken voice of the February 20 movement who still rails against the system, despite being tossed in the clink ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... for a year in 2012 for defaming the police in his songs.
"The authorities are determined to prevent politically engaged artists from expressing themselves," the rapper, whose real name is Mouad Belghouat, told Agence La Belle France Presse last week, after the launch of his new album "Waloo" (Nothing) in Casablanca was blocked by the police.
"The only change after February 20 is that the citizens today talk openly about other things, they protest in the slums, whole neighborhoods take to the streets," he said.
"But as for those who rule the country, there's been no change at all in my view. We have no independent judiciary, no free press, corruption remains rife and the country's money is stolen," the rapper added.
Hamza Mahfoud, a young journalist who was among the original February 20 coordinators, admits the experience in other Arab Spring countries, from the army's takeover in Egypt to the rise of radical Islamists in Syria, has been a "big problem" for the movement, discouraging many in Morocco from pressing for change.
But he insists change has taken place within Moroccan society.
"Even if it's not enough, the movement prompted the regime to introduce a new constitution," he said.

[ABC.NET.AU] Members of Russian protest punk band Pussy Riot were attacked in Sochi by Cossack militia armed with horsewhips.
The scuffles came a day after band members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were detained by police in the Russian Black Sea resort for several hours in connection with a theft case.
The latest fracas over their stay in Sochi came as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) warned the girls that it would be "wholly inappropriate" to stage actions outside Winter Olympic venues.
The clash took place as Tolokonnikova, Alyokhina and one other Pussy Riot member sought to stage an action in the centre of Sochi, about 30 kilometres north of the main Olympic Park.

[An Nahar] The Spanish government said Wednesday it has approved the extradition to Kazakhstan of the former chief of security of a Kazakh banker-turned-dissident despite warnings from rights groups that he will face torture.

Nuttin'! in Spain in December 2012 after his name was placed on Interpol's wanted list at the request of Kazakh authorities who accuse him of embezzlement and plotting terrorist attacks. He denies the allegations against him.
Pavlov argues he is being politically persecuted by the Kazakh government which he says want to obtain information from him about Mukhtar Ablyazov, a foe of strongman Nursultan Nazarbayev ...has served as the President of Kazakhstan since the Fall of the Soviet Union and the nation's independence in 1991. Contrary to commonly held belief, there is a difference between Kazakhs and Cossacks: Kazakhs have mustaches. Or maybe it's the other way around... , who has ruled the ex-Soviet country for over two decades.
Spain's cabinet approved the extradition during its regular cabinet meeting on Friday, a justice ministry spokeswoman said.
Spain's High Court in November backed the extradition request by a vote of 10-7 but the cabinet had the final say.
The government agreed with the extradition request because Kazakhstan had offered guarantees that Pavlov would be tried within a reasonable time and would be treated humanely, the justice ministry spokeswoman said.
"These were the same conditions that the court based its decision on," she said.
Amnesia Amnesty International urged Spain to reverse its decision to extradite Pavlov to resource-rich Kazakhstan, which is frequently criticized for its human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... record.
"Assurances of human treatment from governments that routinely torture are useless," said the group's criminal justice expert, Julia Hall.
"The Spanish government cannot and should not trust such empty promises from the Kazakhstani authorities, who have relentlessly pursued Aleksandr Pavlov and other associates of Mukhtar Ablyazov," she added.

Last year politicians in Britannia said they would not be outlawing religious slaughter despite "strong pressure" from the RSPCA, the National Secular Society and other activists.

[DAWN] US President Barack Obama I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go... on Wednesday warned of "consequences" over the violence in Ukraine and said the United States held the government responsible for ensuring that its people can protest "without fear of repression."
At least 26 people, including 10 coppers, were killed in Kiev Tuesday after riot police entered Independence Square and battled government protesters who have occupied the square since November.
The crisis erupted after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich spurned a broad trade deal with the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... and accepted a $15 billion Russian bailout.
The United States has said the Ukrainian government must pull back riot police from Independence Square in Kiev, call a truce and hold discussions with the opposition.
Obama, who is in Mexico for a summit with Canadian and Mexican leaders, condemned the Ukrainian violence and said the United States is working with European nations as well as the Ukrainian government and the opposition.
"We hold the Ukrainian government primarily responsible for making sure that it is dealing with peaceful protesters in an appropriate way, that the Ukrainian people are able to assemble and speak freely about their interests without fear of repression," Obama said during a visit to Mexico.
"I want to be very clear as we work through these next several days in Ukraine that we're going to be watching closely and we expect the Ukrainian government to show restraint, to not resort to violence in dealing with peaceful protesters," he said.
Obama added that the United States also expects protesters to remain peaceful in the wake of violence in Kiev that left at least 26 people dead.
"We'll be monitoring very closely the situation, recognising that with our European partners and the international community, there will be consequences if people step over the line," the US leader said.
"And that includes making sure the Ukrainian military does not step into what should be a set of issues that can be resolved by civilians."
Earlier today, Ukrainian President Yanukovych replaced the head of the army's general staff after announcing a new "anti-terror" operation in response to the country's deadliest violence since its post-Soviet independence.
The crackdown on anti-government protests by security forces on Tuesday triggered a storm of international condemnation, with the European Union convening urgent talks to mull possible sanctions.

Well, during the latest Gulf War, our people encountered GPS jammers, still sitting in a warehouse, unused. Saddam apparently expected more warning that the show was starting.
