RI Woman Finds Wrong Body In Mother's Casket
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] A Rhode Island woman wants answers after discovering the wrong body in a casket that should have contained her mother, who died unexpectedly in St. Maarten.

Lisa Kondvar, of Warwick, and her family discovered another woman's body in the casket at a New Jersey funeral home last month. The body of her mother, Margaret Porkka, had been prepared at a funeral home in St. Maarten.

"I looked up and I was like, `Good God, are you kidding me?' I was stunned," Kondvar told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named in a telephone interview Friday. The family proceeded with the wake, with the casket closed, because they discovered the mistake just before calling hours were about to begin.

The family believes a hospital or funeral home confused Porkka's body with that of a Canadian woman who died on the island around the same time. They also think Porkka's body was cremated in Ottawa.

French president Francois Hollande considers legal action over alleged affair with actress Julie Gayet
[ABC.NET.AU] French president Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
has complained of a breach of privacy and is considering legal action after a French magazine alleged he was having an affair with actress Julie Gayet.

The weekly tabloid Closer, criticised in 2012 for publishing topless pictures of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, published seven pages of photos of comings and goings outside a Gay Paree apartment block to support its allegation.

A woman who the publication said is Gayet, 41, is seen arriving at the apartment block at night. The pictures then show the arrival of a man resembling Mr Hollande's bodyguard. A second man - which Closer said was Hollande - then arrives on the back of a scooter. He is unidentifiable because he is wearing a black helmet.

#4  Summers then went to work, charging the farmhouse, hoping his hodgepodge squad would follow. It did not, but he kicked the door and sprayed the interior with his tommy (what they called the Thompson) gun. Four Germans fell dead, others ran out a back door to the next house. Summers, still alone, charged that house; again the Germans fled. His example inspired [a private] to come out of the roadside ditch where the group was hiding, set up his light machine gun, and begin laying down a suppressing fire against the barracks building.

Once more Summers dashed forward. The Germans were ready this time; they shot at him from loopholes but, what with [the private’s] machine-gun fire and Summers’s zigzag running, failed to hit him. Summers kicked in the door and sprayed the interior, killing six Germans and driving the remainder out of the building.

Summers dropped to the ground, exhausted and in emotional shock. He rested for half an hour. His squad came up and replenished his ammunition supply. He charged another building, killing six more Germans. The rest threw up their hands. Summers’s squad was close behind; he turned the prisoners over to his men.
...
There were two buildings to go. Summers charged the first and kicked the door open, to see the most improbable sight. Fifteen German artillery men were seated at mess tables eating breakfast. Summers never paused. He shot them down at their tables... D-Day by Stephen Ambrose The Thompson is one man's army.

This Week in Guns, January 11th, 2014

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

The new New York gun law has had its intended effect for the government class: It has added new felons. It's not like we have enough criminals, the state government of New York has to add ever new classes of bad guys.

Yes, the leftist loons have a gun culture and it is every bit as weird as you'd expect.

Since the Sandy Hook massacre, the Bloomberg fascist group has outspent pro gun groups by almost an order of magnitude: 7-1.

Gun control groups presented false data to the federal judge who upheld New York's new control law.

A Kentucky state legislator discharged a gun in her office last week. Leslie Combs (D-Dumbass) said she was cleaning her gun, when it went off.

The NY Times published a story that describes how Dick Metcalf, the Guns and Ammo columnist, is shocked at how he was treated after he wrote that gun owners should accept "reasonable" new gun laws.

Housekeeping note: As long as I continue to do the TWiG report, I will add an end of quarter line to every ammunition class at the end of every quarter.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Ammunition for all classes of firearms was mostly unchanged from the week before.

Kiir troops retake Bentiu
[The Hindu] Negotiators of the South Sudan government and its opposition continued deliberations in Addis Ababa to defuse a four-week long armed rebellion that could, according to latest estimates by the International Crisis Group, have killed nearly 10,000 civilians and displaced another 200,000 thus far.

Mediators from both sides struggled to finalise the details of the "cessation of hostilities" agreement that could stop the violence and pave the way for a political resolution to a crisis that has pitted forces loyal to South Sudan President Salva Kiir against his former deputy Riek Machar's militias.

On Friday, both sides confirmed that government forces had retaken Bentiu, the capital of oil-rich Unity state. Opposition military spokesperson Brig. General Lul Ruai Koang termed the rebel withdrawal from Bentiu a "strategic retreat" but said his forces still controlled the rest of Unity state as also, Bor, the capital of Jonglei state.

The delay in signing an agreement in Addis Ababa, Brig. Gen. Koang said, could be linked to the government's attempt to regain areas under rebel control, as a ceasefire would force both sides to respect each other's territory. "Each side is likely to use territory under its control as leverage in the talks," surmised a diplomat.

Bangladesh
2 Hindu housewives gang-raped
[PRIMENEWS.BD] Two Hindu housewives have been gang-raped at Hajrali Hrishipara in Manirampur upazila on Tuesday night.

Police rescued the tortured housewives on Friday morning and sent them to Jessore General Hospital for medical examinations.

Family members of the victims and police said a gang of armed miscreants stormed into the house of Hajra Das in the early hours of Thursday and tied up him and his son, Uttam Das, with a rope.

Later, the criminals took turns to rape Uttam's wife and sister.

The victims did not initially report the crime fearing reprisals and social stigma, but they finally lodged cases with the police on Friday.

Describing the brutality, Hajra Das said the miscreants gang-raped his daughter and daughter-in-law at gunpoint before their eyes.

Officer-in-charge of Manirampur Police Station Mir Rezaul Hossain said they have launched a drive to arrest the culprits.

#2  Moslem neighbors killed 3 million civilian Hindus in just 8 months in 1971. Its that kind of Moslem paradise.

I have an idea. The above has graph has been used frequently. Perhaps to save time and bandwidth we could simply assign it a number. Say 11?

So you can simply type 11 and we will understand that to mean: Moslem neighbors killed 3 million civilian Hindus in just 8 months in 1971 Its that kind of Moslem paradise..

What do you think? I see efficiency.

China-Japan-Koreas
China surpasses US as world's largest trading nation
h/t Gates of Vienna
China became the world's largest trading nation in 2013, overtaking the US in what Beijing described as "a landmark milestone" for the country.

China's annual trade in goods passed the $4tn (£2.4tn) mark for the first time last year according to official data, after exports from the world's second largest economy rose 7.9% to $2.21tn and imports rose 7.3% to $1.95tn.

As a result total trade rose 7.6% over the year to $4.16tn. The US is yet to publish its 2013 trade figures, but with trade totalling $3.5tn in the first 11 months of the year, it is unlikely to beat China.
Socialists can't beat capitalists in trade.

Officials sacked over China mosque stampede
[PRIMENEWS.BD] A county chief and three other officials have been dismissed over a stampede at a mosque in China's northwest that left 14 people dead.

Those sacked included Xiji county head Ren Lixin, along with the county's director of religious affairs, deputy police chief, and a township head, Xinhua News Agency said on Thursday.

The mosque's administrator has already been detained on suspicion of criminal negligence.

The stampede, which also left ten injured happened in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region on Sunday, was blamed on poor crowd control.

It occurred at around 1pm while traditional food was being handed out to people attending an event to commemorate a late religious leader.

Ningxia region is home to the Chinese-speaking Hui minority, who are mostly Mohammedan but distinct from the Uighurs of Xinjiang.

Europe
Danish Cinnamon Rolls Too Spicy for EU Rules
[An Nahar] Easy on the cinnamon! That advice from Denmark's food authority has rankled pastry chefs whose cinnamon rolls were found to violate the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's spice rules.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recently discovered that Danish cinnamon rolls and twists contained more coumarin -- a chemical compound in the most common variety of cinnamon -- than EU rules allow. Excessive intake of coumarin can cause liver damage.

So the agency asked Danish bakers to reduce the amount of cinnamon they sprinkle in the dough for sweet treats like the "kanelsnegel" (cinnamon roll) and "kanelstang" (cinnamon twist).

Danish bakers protested, saying the EU limit is too strict, and would make it hard, if not impossible, to make their cherished pastries.

"A grown man like me could eat like 10 'kanelsnegle' every day for several years and not even get near the limit of what's dangerous to my liver," said Anders Grabow, a front man for the Danish Bakers' Association. "I would probably get too much sugar in my body before that."

The EU limit for so-called "fine baked goods" is set at 15 milligrams of coumarin per kilogram of pastry. The Danish agency found last year that more than half of the 74 food samples it took from bakeries, supermarkets and importers contained more coumarin than that.

The Grand Turk
Turkey's judiciary hits back at govt plans to curb powers
[Al Ahram] Turkey's top judicial body hit back Friday at the government's plans to curb its powers, adding fuel to a bitter row over a vast corruption probe engulfing Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet...

The proposed reforms, to be debated in parliament later Friday, would give the justice ministry more powers to decide who makes up the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) and strip the legal body of its powers to pass decrees.

The changes were slapped down by the judicial body itself as unconstitutional, while the United States and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
weighed in citing serious concerns.

"With the law amendment, the board is reporting to the justice ministry. The amendment is against the constitution and the formation of an independent body," the HSYK said in a written statement, adding that the reforms were against international law.

The government had moved to rein in the HSYK after a vast corruption probe broke, implicating key allies of Erdogan.

The firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
prime minister has responded angrily to the investigation, also sacking hundreds of police chiefs in a major purge.

Alarmed by the developments, Washington stressed the importance of "a legal system that meets the highest standards of fairness, timeliness, and transparency in civil and criminal matters".

"No one is above the law," US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told news hounds on Thursday, adding that allegations against public figures must be investigated impartially.

India-Pakistan
As Devyani Khobragade returns, India asks US to recall diplomat of same rank
[TIMESOFINDIA.INDIATIMES] The United States and India expelled a diplomat each in what was politely termed "withdrawal", as the torrid month-long diplomatic stand-off over deputy consul general in New York, Devyani Khobragade, drew to a bitter close. As the Indian diplomat flew back within hours after the state department accorded her full diplomatic immunity, India, in a clear tit-for-tat action on Friday, asked the US embassy to send home a senior diplomat working as a counselor.

The government said it was done to ensure reciprocity as the US, too, had asked India to withdraw Khobragade after New Delhi refused to waive her full diplomatic immunity in her capacity as counselor to India's permanent mission to UN.

Khobragade's departure followed her criminal indictment by US attorney Preet Bharara on two counts of visa fraud and misrepresentation in a case involving her employment of an Indian housekeeper/nanny Sangeeta Richard in New York.

Southeast Asia
Thailand plays down coup talk ahead of city 'shutdown' by protesters
[Al Ahram] Thailand on Friday played down talk of a military coup ahead of a planned "shutdown" of the capital next week by protesters trying to overthrow Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and said life would go on much as normal.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said it was alarmist of the U.S. embassy to advise its citizens on Friday to stock up on two weeks' supply of food and water ahead of what protest leaders say will be a prolonged siege of Bangkok.

"Maybe they worry too much ... People will live their normal life. Don't be afraid of things that will happen because we try to control the situation," he said.

Demonstrators led by former opposition politician Suthep Thaugsuban aim to paralyse the capital for between 15 and 20 days by blocking seven main intersections, causing gridlock in a city clogged with traffic at the best of times.

The turmoil is the latest episode in an eight-year conflict that pits Bangkok's middle class and royalist establishment against the mostly poorer, rural supporters of Yingluck and her brother, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The protesters want to suspend what they say is a fragile democracy destabilised by Thaksin, whom they accuse of nepotism and corruption. They want to eradicate the political influence of his family by altering electoral arrangements in ways they have not spelt out, along with other political reforms.

Thaksin was ousted by the military in 2006 and sentenced to jail in absentia for abuse of power in 2008 but he still looms large over Thai politics, the dominant force behind his sister's administration from his self-exile in Dubai.

#1  Wife and I are in Bangers finishing a 3 week vaykay. I think things will get ugly on Monday. The opposition is itching for fight and really want the military to step in. This place is one ass@&$? with a .45 or a Molotov away from coupville.

#1  Welcome to America Ksenia Sobchak, where the TSA must keep All airline passengers safe from potential terrorists.

Tisk, tisk, about the “stripped naked” charge, you just have to pretend you were on one of your modeling sessions.

#3  Russian Sausage

Russian sausage was a must of peasant table, when all the food and products were made at home. Sausages were baked, fried, smoked. They made the menu rich and fat.

Method:
Combine all ingredients and mix then, let sit over night, mix again and stuff into hog casing. Bake at 350 deg., approximately 1 hour.

Ingredients:
5 pounds coarse ground pork.
2 ea large chopped onions.
2 tb pressed garlic.
1 c fresh parsley chopped.
3 tb dill seeds.
3 tb caraway seeds.
1 tb black pepper.
1 tb salt.
2 c water.

#9  Sobchak said she had a spa massage with jojoba oil mixed with glycerin before boarding her flight that might have triggered the airport’s security equipment

Glycerin? Aside from it being "infowars" which is a site not usually on Rantburg (keep that in mind for the future - hint, hint,) one would think that one wouldn't do something stupid like that.
