-Short Attention Span Theater-
Westboro Geeks Now Targeting Oklahoma Children's Funerals
Protesters from a Kansas church who have gained attention through picketing at the funerals of fallen military servicemen are now turning their attention to protesting at the funerals of children to retaliate for their tires being slashed at a McAlester serviceman's funeral last week.

Members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas will be in Burneyville in southern Oklahoma today. That's where a funeral is being held for eight-year-old Jalen Wolfe, who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week.

On the WBC website, members say they are protesting because of the vandalism they suffered over the weekend while protesting at the funeral of McAlester serviceman Jason McCluskey.

They say quote "the Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma's children and casting them into Hell." Furthermore, their website reads "Thank God For More Dead Children In Oklahoma!".

In addition to today's funeral, the protestors are scheduled to return to Owasso Thursday to protest at the funeral of Melissa Hanslovan of Collinsville, who died Sunday after a one-car crash over the weekend.

The protesters were in Owasso earlier this year for the funeral of Specialist Andrew Looney. They say soldiers are being killed because of God's revenge against America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

#4  WBC is a horrendous group and that said they are nothing more than attention whores. If people would stop giving them attention they would go away. Its like a child having a tantrum..if you give into the tantrum then the tantrums only get worse.

What happened in McAlester OK last week was disgraceful. I hear people talking abotu how great it was that WBC was shouted down and their van tires slashed and these same people can not even name the soldier who's funeral it was. Sickening. That hero, the reason we should have been there, was lost in that display of bad behavior on both sides of that protest.

#5  Negative Knottie, the hero's sacrifice wasn't lost on anyone that matters - hence the strong backlash on the WBC.

As for bad behavior - in a more just and better time these WBC scumbags would be beaten at each appearance until they stayed away.

Period.

UN IPCC Official Admits MMGW Nothing More Than Wealth Redistribution Scam
If you needed any more evidence that the entire theory of manmade global warming was a scheme to redistribute wealth you got it Sunday when a leading member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change told a German news outlet, "[W]e redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy."

Such was originally published by Germany's NZZ Online Sunday, and reprinted in English by the Global Warming Policy Foundation moments ago:

(NZZ AM SONNTAG): The new thing about your proposal for a Global Deal is the stress on the importance of development policy for climate policy. Until now, many think of aid when they hear development policies.

(OTTMAR EDENHOFER, UN IPCC OFFICIAL): That will change immediately if global emission rights are distributed. If this happens, on a per capita basis, then Africa will be the big winner, and huge amounts of money will flow there. This will have enormous implications for development policy. And it will raise the question if these countries can deal responsibly with so much money at all.

(NZZ): That does not sound anymore like the climate policy that we know.

(EDENHOFER): Basically it's a big mistake to discuss climate policy separately from the major themes of globalization. The climate summit in Cancun at the end of the month is not a climate conference, but one of the largest economic conferences since the Second World War. Why? Because we have 11,000 gigatons of carbon in the coal reserves in the soil under our feet - and we must emit only 400 gigatons in the atmosphere if we want to keep the 2-degree target. 11 000 to 400 - there is no getting around the fact that most of the fossil reserves must remain in the soil.

(NZZ): De facto, this means an expropriation of the countries with natural resources. This leads to a very different development from that which has been triggered by development policy.

(EDENHOFER): First of all, developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community. But one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole.

For the record, Edenhofer was co-chair of the IPCC's Working Group III, and was a lead author of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report released in 2007 which controversially concluded, "Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations."

As such, this man is a huge player in advancing this theory, and he has now made it quite clear - as folks on the realist side of this debate have been saying for years - that this is actually an international economic scheme designed to redistribute wealth.

Outspoken Egyptian blogger released
[Al Jazeera] Abdul Kareem Nabeel Suleiman, reportedly the first blogger in Egypt to face trial for his online writings, has been sprung from prison after being held 10 days beyond his intended release date.

Suleiman, who was imprisoned for more than four years, has declined to speak publicly since he was released on Monday, according to the website of the campaign organised to support him.

"Kareem refused to talk to anyone at the moment, however he reassures all his supporters worldwide that he's fine," a post on the website's blog said. "The brave man wants to have a little privacy for a week before he can say anything."
"Please don't kill him!"
Earlier this month, Egyptian security forces reportedly beat Suleiman after transferring him from the Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria, where he was serving his sentence, to the city's State Security Intelligence (SSI) office.

Gamal Eid, Suleiman's lawyer and the director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, said in a statement that Suleiman had been beaten by a "junior officer".

After his release date came and went on November 5, he was transferred to SSI headquarters and presented with an order for his continued detention, Eid said.

Suleiman's treatment served to reinforce a "climate of hatred" against the police, Eid wrote. "The ministry of the interior, with all its officers and soldiers, is not more powerful than his right."

Suleiman was first jugged in Alexandria on November 6, 2006. Authorities extended his detention several times and eventually filed formal charges against him and brought him to trial.

Suleiman pleaded not guilty, but in February 2007 a judge convicted him for defaming Hosni Mubarak, the president, inciting hatred of Islam and inciting the overthrow of the government, among other charges. The judge handed Suleiman a four-year prison sentence.

After news of Suleiman's continued detention began to spread, well-known advocacy groups, among them Reporters Without Borders and The Committee to Protect Journalists, weighed in to protest.
Did a lot of good, didn't they ...
Suleiman's writings had led authorities to question him even before his November 2006 detention. Writing under the pseudonym Kareem Amer, Suleiman expounded prolifically on his blog, addressing issues of political repression, religious extremism and women's rights.

He wrote a blog post about an incident in Alexandria where Mohammedans and Coptic Christians clashed over the sale of a DVD recording of a play called "Once I Was Blind But Now I See" that depicted a poor, young Copt who is drawn to Islamist fighters who then try to kill him.

Three people died and a nun was stabbed by a young Mohammedan man in the incident.

In his post, Suleiman said that "the Mohammedans have taken the mask off to show their true hateful face, and they have shown the world that they are at the top of their brutality, inhumanity, and thievery".

Suleiman's conviction sparked widespread coverage in the media and worldwide demonstrations from Sweden to the United States. The US state department publicly expressed concern about Suleiman's conviction and gave his arrest a critical mention in its 2006 human rights
... which are not the same thing as individual rights, mind you...

Madagascar officers 'make coup bid'
A colonel with the Madagascan military has said he and 20 other top-ranking officers have taken over the Indian Ocean island nation of Madagascar.

Colonel Charles Andrianasoavina, one of the main backers of a power-grab last March by Andry Rajoelina, the president, made the coup declaration on Wednesday at a military base near the airport. Later on Wednesday, Andrianasoavina told France 24 news network that his group planned to seize the presidential palace and main airport.

Witnesses said about 1,000 people erected a roadblock and set tyres ablaze near military camps housing the rebel soldiers, who said they had formed a ruling committee to run the country.

Guinea declares state of emergency amid party mood in winner's camp
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Guinea's acting leader declared a state of emergency today after violence which has raged since a disputed presidential election claimed three more lives.

Interim president General Sekouba Konate, who has led the troubled country since January, decreed a state of emergency would last until results which name opposition leader Alpha Conde the victor, are confirmed by the Supreme Court.

The announcement comes as the corpse count since Monday rose to seven as three more bodies were discovered in Ratoma, the only suburb in Conakry which defeated candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo won in the November 7 vote.

"The president of the republic decrees a state of emergency throughout the country as of today November 17 until the proclamation of definitive presidential election results by the Supreme Court," said Major Mohamed Kasse, reading the decree on national television.

In later comments to AFP, Kasse explained the decree meant "any protest, any gathering" was forbidden.

Mr Diallo, a member of the Fulani ethnic group, has said he is the rightful winner and is challenging the results, citing massive voter fraud.

While he called on his backers to refrain from violence his supporters have clashed with security forces in several of his strongholds around the country.

A doctor on board an ambulance in the Conakry district said three deaths had been recorded on Wednesday.

"We have witness accounts from the scene and we were told it was members of Fossepel who fired," he said, referring to the special electoral security force set up by the interim government.

Bangladesh
Khaleda urges all to join post-Eid movement
[Bangla Daily Star] BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has called upon the countrymen to join the anti-government movement after the Eid-ul-Azha to protect the interest of the nation and the country.

"Certainly after Eid, we must launch movement to protect the interest of the people and the country... now there is no other alternative but movement," she said.

The leader of the opposition was talking to the news hounds Wednesday afternoon after hosting a reception on the occasion of holy Eid-ul-Azha at the Ladies Club in the city.

She thanked people for spontaneously observing the November 14 countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal two days ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha. BNP enforced the shutdown to protest "forcible eviction" of Khaleda Zia from her Dhaka cantonment residence on November 13.

Narraing the 23-month-old Awami League government's "misdeeds, failures and wrong steps," Khaleda said the government should quit power shouldering the responsibility of failures, otherwise the country will step back 40 years.

She said the last Fakhruddin-Moinuddin government put back the country by 20 years. The country will step back another 20 years if the present government stays in power further.

The BNP chairperson said there is no local and foreign investment in the country for want of suitable environment while mills and factories are closing down one after another as the local market is grabbed by foreign products, which increased unemployment.

She further said it has been learnt that many Bangladeshi garment industries are being sold out to foreigners.

Castro Says Tea Party Leading U.S. to "Fascism"
Speaking to a group of students visiting Havana, former Cuban leader Fidel Castro accused the Tea Party of leading the United States towards "fascism."

In his comments, Castro chided the United States as a "ruined nation" and derided the Tea Party as "extreme right."

Castro also announced that health concerns had forced him to step down from his position as head of the Cuban Communist Party.

Castro's exchange with the students was published in Granma, the state-run newspaper.

"I got sick and did what I had to do -- delegate my powers." Granma reported.

Castro ceded the Presidency of Cuba in 2006 after 46 years in power. He was replaced by his younger brother Raúl.

Under both brothers, Cuba has been isolated from the international community, criticized for its lack of democratic elections and for its systematic abuse of human rights.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia Mulling Voluntary Mass Relocation
The Kremlin is considering pushing ahead with the biggest geographical redistribution of its population since Stalin's forced deportations of entire nationalities in the 1940s.

Under the plans, which were leaked to the daily Vedomosti newspaper, the majority of Russia's 141 million population would be -- concentrated in just 20 urban centres rather than sparsely spread out over one-fifth of the earth's surface as is now the case.
Makes it easier for the Chinese to grab Siberia ...
At the moment, 90 per cent of Russia's towns have a population of 100,000 people or less, many of them in remote locations. The leaked plan said such places had "no future" and were not worth developing. Instead, it proposed relocating people to 20 urban centres where Russia's main natural resources such as oil and gas are located.

Unlike in Stalin's day, when people were forced to move at gunpoint on the often spurious grounds that they were "enemies of the people" or Nazi collaborators, relocating would be optional and encouraged on economic grounds alone.
But if not enough of them move ...
Much of rural Russia is dying as young people move to towns and cities and entire Soviet-era settlements which were built around just one or two factories are no longer economically viable. "There is no need to fight against the current and we need to develop big cities and urban centres," the plan said according to the newspaper.

Analysts said the plan, which would roll back the Soviet idea of urbanizing the entire country, is likely to be heavily touted by President Dmitry Medvedev as part of his agenda to modernize Russia. "Changing the map of the country is a necessary but not simple task which needs to be done very carefully as any overreaction could lead to a fight for urban resources," a government official was quoted as saying.

With speculation mounting about whether Medvedev or Vladimir Putin, the prime minister, will run for the presidency in 2012, the plan could be a useful electoral tool for Medvedev, according to analysts.

Soros buys gold after calling it 'ultimate bubble'
[Emirates 24/7] "Gold is the ultimate bubble. It is certainly not safe," George Soros, billionaire investor and legendary currency speculator, said at the beginning of this year and then reiterated his opinion in September this year.

But in stark contrast to his 'bubble' comments, his fund announced yesterday (November 15) that it increased gold positions during the third quarter.

According to Marketwatch, Soros held 4,697,008 shares of the SPDR Gold Trust and 705,000 call options on the gold ETF at the end of September, its regulatory filing showed. Soros also owned 5,000,000 shares of the iShares Gold Trust at the end of the third quarter, according to the filing. Three months earlier, Soros held 5,244,697 shares of the SPDR Gold Trust, a portion of which was a shared position. The firm held no shares of the iShares Gold Trust at the end of June, according to the filing.

Soros had said in September he expects a repeat of the historical pattern of bull runs in assets like gold ultimately hitting records, and then suddenly reversing. Gold is currently the only bull market, Soros said, adding that it may continue to rise but "it's not going to last for ever." He said it will be interesting to see if gold declines in the coming weeks.

Last week, his concerns were made conspicuous by a sudden and dramatic decline in gold prices. A bevy of worries spread through volatile markets and gold, which was on a record-breaking spree of making lifetime highs almost on a daily basis, dropped $38 an ounce, leading once again to heated debates about whether or not gold is in a bubble.

While the weekly decline amounted to just 2.7 per cent on the over $1,400/oz that the yellow metal had clocked in the week before, analysts who argue that it isn't prudent to pay more than $1,000/oz seem to be gradually coming out of the woodworks now.

Analyst Alex Dumortier, using data from the World Gold Council and precious metal dealer Kitco, argues that if we look at inflation-adjusted gold prices going back to 1851, the yellow metal has generated a historical average return of 0.7 per cent per annum.

"However,
The infamous However...
even that small positive real return is a bit of a mirage resulting from the powerful gold rally we've witnessed. Indeed, as recently as 2005, gold's average real return over 154 years was zero," he says arguing that gold is an inert asset and over the very long term, it is unsuitable as a store of value and could be heading for a big devaluation.

Roche dismisses 4,800 workers
(KUNA) -- The Swiss pharmaceutical group Roche announced on Wednesday its "implementation plans" include reducing the work force by 4,800 positions worldwide, or six per cent of the Group's current work force, over the next two years. "The largest reductions are planned in sales and marketing and in manufacturing. Approximately 800 jobs would be transferred to other Roche sites and 700 positions outsourced to third parties. Combination of planned job reductions and transfers affect 6,300 positions overall," said the Swiss pharmaceutical group in its blurb.

"Measures aim to strengthen innovation and ensure sustained success in a fast changing market environment," it added.

Most of the planned job reductions will occur in the Pharmaceuticals Division, particularly in the division's global sales and marketing organisation and in manufacturing.

The company named its measures as "Operational Excellence Program" and is aimed "at adapting cost structures to an increasingly challenging market environment and achieving significant efficiency and productivity gains."

Court to Issue Warrant for Assange - WikiLeaks founder
Swedish prosecutors said they will seek an international arrest warrant for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after a court approved their request Thursday to detain him for questioning in a rape case.

The Australian is suspected of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion in an investigation that stems from his encounters with two women during a visit to Sweden in August.

He has denied the allegations and insisted his sexual relations with the women were consensual.

Spain says ready to contribute to EU's bailout plan to Ireland
(KUNA) -- Spain said Wednesday it was ready to contribute to a bailout plan to salvage Irish banks, a move that might be taken by the European Union (EU) to maintain economic stability in the eurozone.

Minister of Economy and Finance Elena Salgado Mendez said sharp fluctuations in stock markets would not benefit anyone. She was speaking to Spanish media on sidelines of meetings of EU's Finance Ministers in Brussels, Belgium.

Priorities of Spain and other EU countries are stability of eurozone, overcoming impacts of global economic crisis and pushing economic growth in the euro area, she said.

Ireland is a responsible country capable of taking the right decisions to reform its banking sector, said Mendez. Dublin is also aware of the size of difficulties and complexities that might affect euro-zone economy if the inappropriate measures were taken, she added.

Mendez said Ireland's debts crisis was not directly affecting Spain because the austerity measures adopted by Madrid coupled with economic reforms have started to revive economy, slash debts and reduce budget deficit.

EU Finance Ministers were discussing on debt crisis in Ireland amid concerns that it will be unable to pay the cost of rescuing its banks.

The Irish government anticipated deficit to reach 32 percent of GDP this year, 10 times higher than the criteria set by the Maastricht treaty, which regulate the eurozone.

Under Panetta, Morale Up At CIA
CIA Director Leon E. Panetta, after nearly two years in office, has emerged as a fierce protector of the agency's people and its role in capturing or killing terrorists under an administration that shuns the words "war" and "Islamic terrorist."

Mr. Panetta, 72, a bookish Northern California liberal known for crunching budget numbers as a congressman, arrived at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., as a Democratic Party man loyal to President Obama and with a bit of a mystery on the subject of waging war.

He has remained true to the president, but he has not shied away from publicly butting heads with prominent Democrats to side instead with his 25,000 officers and analysts. On the counterterrorism front, he has pushed for more CIA involvement in al Qaeda-infested Pakistan and Yemen, while not avoiding the phrase "We are a nation at war."

All of this has made him popular at CIA stations around the world, observers say.
All well and good, the agency chief should be the agency's chief advocate in public settings. Behind the scenes the big question must be: is Panetta effective? Is he fixing the known problems at the agency? Is the quality of the intel high? Are the covert operations working and remaining covert? If Mr. Panetta moves all that in a positive direction, then regardless of his political affiliation or beliefs, he's a good director.
The confidence level was not so high in the Obama administration's first year. One of Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.'s first actions was to launch a second criminal investigation of CIA officers who conducted enhanced interrogations of al Qaeda captives. Mr. Panetta opposed the decision and took his complaints directly to the White House. Career prosecutors in the George W. Bush administration determined that the CIA's interrogation techniques were authorized.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, made the serious charge that the CIA was lying when it said she was briefed privately on the interrogation methods.

That prompted Mr. Panetta, a fellow Northern Californian and former colleague, to take the unusual step of issuing a public statement rebutting the speaker.

"Let me be clear: It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress," he said. "That is against our laws and our values. As the agency indicated previously in response to congressional inquiries, our contemporaneous records from September 2002 indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of [al Qaeda terrorist] Abu Zubaydah, describing the enhanced techniques that had been employed."

"This is the guy who has stood up to the president, has stood up to Eric Holder," Mr. Hoekstra said of the CIA director. "He hasn't gotten the job done yet. He's got to get Eric Holder and the president to come out and say, 'Hey, we're not going to prosecute these guys in the CIA. But at least he's stopped them dead in their tracks so far."

A scorecard since Mr. Panetta arrived at Langley: It is said that more than 1,000 al Qaeda members and other terrorists have been killed or captured in Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden is said to be hiding. The CIA is waging a secret war in the tribal areas, using officers on the ground and missile strikes from remotely operated Predator aircraft.

The director stays in touch by sending internal messages to headquarters and the stations at the rate of one per week, keeping the staff up to date about what he is doing. He has flown more than 150,000 miles to visit 40 CIA stations and bases in 30 countries.

"Considering the administration he has to work with, he's doing a pretty good job," said Bart Bechtel, a former CIA operations officer. "He's trying to protect his folks, and he's standing up to people like Pelosi. I think by and large his heart is in the right place. I think he understands the importance of the agency where the rest of the administration doesn't."

Mr. Bechtel said Mr. Panetta's willingness to put out statements rebutting powerful critics "is important to all the employees, the stations and everybody because they need to know they've got a director who is looking out for them."

"They feel like they may not have anybody else looking out for them," he said.

In September, Mr. Panetta visited the outpost [Khost, where 7 CAI were killed] and dedicated a plaque to the seven. The plaque includes a verse from Isaiah:

"And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."

Bullshi* flag down! Unnamed "observers" indeed. "Popularity" with CIA Chiefs of Station worldwide can be more accurately credited to the appointment of Administration friendly Chiefs of Mission.

Visiting FOB Chapman and reciting catchy, operator bible verses and mottos is..... too little, too late. Someone will eventually set the record straight with regard to the admin wanna-be CIA site lead who was responsible for that disaster. Paying for a phuechup with your life is one thing, taking 6 other with you is another.

F-22 wreckage found in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Searchers today discovered what is believed to be the wreckage of an Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet that went missing Tuesday night on a training mission from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

A rescue team was en route to the crash site to search for the pilot, according to a statement from the base’s public affairs office Wednesday.

Search efforts focused southeast of Cantwell on the edge of Denali National Park and Preserve, according to the Alaska Air National Guard, which is coordinating the effort. The search, through the Air Guard’s Rescue Coordination Center, involves pararescuemen onboard HH-60 helicopters and an HC-130 plane.

#2  As of 750AM local time, weather at Cantwell on the south side of Windy Pass in the Alaska Range was a few clouds at 2500 AGL, 5000 AGL broken, visibility 10 and temp +5F. Civil twilight is at 829AM, and sunrise is in one hour from now. The cloud deck is a hindrance, but they may have enough clearance to be able to see to the summits of the ridges.

Unesco lists new cultural treasures
Ladies and Gentlemen! We've got to protect our phony baloney jobs!
Peking Opera, Spanish Flamenco and the art of French gastronomy have all won places on Unesco's list of intangible world heritages to preserve.

The UN culture and education agency deemed these traditions and 43 others from a total of 11 countries worthy of recognition on the list, at a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday.

Better known for its work protecting world monuments and natural wonders, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation started the list in 2003 to preserve art forms and other traditions in the face of globalisation.

The aim is to recognise elements of living heritage, such as language, in a bid to protect cultural diversity and foster a sense of community.

To be recognised on the list, traditions must be deemed to spread knowledge of intangible cultural heritage and protective measures must be taken to promote them.

Unesco experts singled out French gastronomy as a "social custom aimed at celebrating the most important moments in the lives of individuals and groups".
Yes, I'm sure much extensive first hand research was done before this was added to the list. Waiter! More wine!! And a receipt!
Catherine Colonna, the country's ambassador to Unesco, praised the inclusion, saying it "makes a contribution to cultural diversity. The French love getting together to eat and drink well and enjoy good times in such a manner. It is part of our tradition - a quite active tradition," she said.
Like surrendering to the Germans...
Among the reasons cited for the inclusion of flamenco was that the dance could "raise awareness about intangible cultural heritage, while promoting human creativity and mutual respect among communities".

Among the more obscure traditions, Luxembourg won recognition for a centuries-old annual hopping procession in the eastern border village of Echternach.

The blade-twirling of a scissor-dancing ritual in Peru's Chanka region, which has roots going back to the 16th century, was also nominated as was Turkey's 648-year-old Kirkpinar festival of dozens of men wrestling in cooking oil.

Nominations not only included festivals and rituals but also arts such as the Chinese traditional medicine of acupuncture.

Traditional Mexican cuisine and the Mediterranean diet, consisting of growing and consuming olive oil, cereals, fresh or dried fruit and vegetables, were also honoured with recognition on the list.

It approved all four elements proposed for inclusion on a list of practices in need of urgent protection: Croatian Ojkanje singing, Meshrep - the harvest festival ceremony of northwest China's Turkish-speaking Muslim Uighur people and two other Chinese cultural practices.

Other admissions to the list included Croatian ginger bread craft, oil wrestling in Turkey's Kirkpinar region and falconry in 11 countries.

The inter-governmental committee has been considering 51 cultural practices from around the world for inclusion on the Convention of Intangible Cultural Heritage since Monday.
The complete list. It appears this scam has been going on for awhile. Nuthin from America, of course. I'll nominate F-150's, willie pete, napalm, and Arclights at the next meeting.

#8  I could recommend several things to add to their list:

1) Cajun cooking, music, and humor.
2) Texas style barbecue
3) Rodeo, which we share with Canada
4) Local, County, and State fairs

Cajun cooking and music is unique to a small segment of the United States, and incorporates the history, culture, and tastes of an amalgam of French, Spanish, native American, and others in a unique blend.

Texas style barbecue, especially involving a whole animal, is somewhat unique to the southwest-central portion of the Great Plains. It has its roots in successful cattle drives - something unique to American culture.

Rodeo, like Texas-style barbecue, is entertainment today, but it originated in the wide-open spaces and the cattle drives of the mid-to-late 1800's. It also incorporates some cultural aspects of Native American life and times.

I've been to "fairs" all over the world, and those in the US are unique in many ways. They celebrate our mixed heritage, past and present, and provide a means of continuing traditions from dozens, if not hundreds, of different cultures in a distinctive American way.

UNESCO, on the other hand, is a waste of time and money.

Tinnitus A Problem For Many Veterans
Tinnitus, commonly called "ringing in the ears", is believed to affect about 50 million Americans, most temporarily or at near tolerable levels. However, severe tinnitus can be very painful, preventing sleep and interfering with a normal life.

And it is a major health issue for large numbers of veterans of both Iraq and Afghanistan. Tinnitus was the most-claimed service-connected disability for veterans receiving compensation in fiscal year 2009-10, according to the Veterans Affairs Health Care System.

The disorder can be the result of extreme noise exposure, such as that experienced by combat veterans, and is associated with hearing loss, which also is a common complaint from veterans.

Tinnitus happens when hairs in the inner ear move in relation to entering sound waves. Then an electrical signal is sent from the ear to the brain. The brain interprets these signals as sound. If the hairs inside the inner ear are bent or broken, this could cause tinnitus. It involves the sensation of hearing sound when no external sound is present. For many, the lack of noise can exacerbate the problem.

There isn't an effective surgery for tinnitus, so management is the best way to treat the condition. This can be done through aural rehabilitation and hearing aids. Unconventional therapies, such as acupuncture, can be more or less successful depending on the reason for the tinnitus.

Even if you use an ipod to workout like I do, I'd try to keep the volume reasonable.

#4  The statement that there is not an effective surgery may not be correct. The Esteem system that you hay have heard advertised on Rush appears to work and I believe would address tinnitus. But it's expensive, $25-30K per ear from what I've heard, and does involve surgery. Dr. Steve may want to offer his professional opinion, but if you know someone whose life is being severely disrupted, it might be worth investigation.

#6  I ALWAYS wear earplugs when at the shooting range. I can't imagine being in a firefight and shooting off 200 rounds without ear protection. Much less standing around while a Bradley's 25mm goes off or someone launches a Javelin.

That Esteem system just lets you hear again if the ringing is too loud - it doesn't actually stop the ringing. You'll have that til the day you die and it is utterly incurable.

#7  gromky: Let me give a pitch for acupuncture. I went to one in Alabama who specialized in tinnitus. His patients came from a hundred miles away, and his waiting room was always full.

From what I've read, they subdivide tinnitus into one of two types, one of which is easy to treat, just four or five sessions, and the other is much harder, taking months or years.

Even if they can't cure it, they can diminish it enough so that their patients would pay a premium for treatment, though acupuncture usually isn't that pricey.

Me, I'll swear by it, as far as back pain goes.

#9  I've suffered from tinnitus for 25 years, and mine is pretty bad. Mine came from working in tightly enclosed places with lots of electronic equipment, working right on a busy flight line, working in computer rooms, and who knows what else. Tinnitus can also be caused by infection, by neurological problems, and by diabetes. It doesn't have a "simple" source, and it's almost impossible to treat in most cases. While some people get help from hearing aids, they cause problems for other people. It can be (and in my case, often is) miserable. Coffee, sound of any kind, and some foods can also make it worse. It also frequently causes me to have headaches equal to a migraine in intensity.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Bloggers Brace For Fresh Blow To Middle East Press Freedom
The Middle East's modest window for dissent, created by a surge in blogging and online journalism over the past decade, looks poised to narrow with a raft of measures across the region.

A draft Internet law awaiting parliamentary approval in Syria is one such measure. The government says it would give a needed legal framework to online activity by forcing bloggers to register as union members, conferring rights such as a press card to online journalists for the first time, and potentially requiring content be withdrawn from websites.

Online journalists and bloggers in Syria, already subject to harassment and imprisonment, are concerned that the law is designed to crack down on their activities and restrict freedom of expression. Media analysts say parliamentary approval is likely to come soon.

Since Syria's online sphere began to blossom in 2000, Syrian websites – which face less scrutiny than the country's print media – have been able to publish stories on sensitive subjects such as the army and corruption. They have recently brought to light a controversial personal status law and the issue of corporal punishment.

“We have democratized information and flagged up sensitive and important topics for debate, both controversial and non-controversial," says Abdel Ayman Nour, the editor of All4Syria, a news website run from outside the country which as well as writing about politics has actively campaigned about neglected topics such as the environment.

“But a law that stipulates that police can enter the office of a website to take journalists for questioning, seize their computers, and impose penalties of jail or a fine of up to 1 million Syrian pounds [$200,000] is clearly designed to end that.”

Sharpton To Schultz: FCC Should Threaten Radio Stations Carrying Rush
Watch another member of the Dissent Is Patriotic crowd urge the Obama administration to use its power to silence a critic.

AL SHARPTON: When you keep having all of these racial tones, that is supported by federally-regulated radio--remember, these stations that he is on go to the federal government to get consolidation, to get waivers--the government has a right to protect free speech but they also have an obligation to hold standards where American people are not subjected to this . . .

I think that even if his advertisers can't be stopped with boycotts, the FCC must step in and deal with standards on how they give station clearances to people that just want to race-bait. This is not about opinions, this is not about what you or I say in our college speeches or churches. This is on federally-regulated airwaves that the FCC gives the license to stations to let them do this

The Congressional Black Caucus, Progressive Caucus and others ought to take this up with the FCC. Their ought to be a line, on race, on gender, on sexual status. Their ought to be a line where people have the right to say what they want, but they do not have a right to use federally-regulated airwaves to malign people because of groups

I think that Rush Limbaugh does what he does. I think what bothers me is there are stations and networks that are allowed to make money off of him desecrating the presidents of the United States on Mount Rushmore. That bothers me.

Wrong, Al. The government has an obligation to protect free speech. See the First Amendment. While there are limits to free speech ("you can't yell 'Fire!' in a crowded theater" (that is not on fire)), the government cannot "enforce standards" to suppress speech that you don't like.
