F-22 wreckage found in Alaska
2010-11-18
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Searchers today discovered what is believed to be the wreckage of an Air Force F-22 Raptor fighter jet that went missing Tuesday night on a training mission from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

A rescue team was en route to the crash site to search for the pilot, according to a statement from the baseÂ’s public affairs office Wednesday.

Search efforts focused southeast of Cantwell on the edge of Denali National Park and Preserve, according to the Alaska Air National Guard, which is coordinating the effort. The search, through the Air GuardÂ’s Rescue Coordination Center, involves pararescuemen onboard HH-60 helicopters and an HC-130 plane.

#4  Rather unforgiving country up there. USAF CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue) will locate the pilot. I hope and pray he or she has somehow survived.

Not good at all, Mike, but maybe he parachuted out before it crashed. Don't they have some sort of transmitter on the parachute?

Weather's a problem, though. :-(

#2  As of 750AM local time, weather at Cantwell on the south side of Windy Pass in the Alaska Range was a few clouds at 2500 AGL, 5000 AGL broken, visibility 10 and temp +5F. Civil twilight is at 829AM, and sunrise is in one hour from now. The cloud deck is a hindrance, but they may have enough clearance to be able to see to the summits of the ridges.
