Greenland Prime Minister Calls for Independence from Denmark: ‘Time to Take the Next Step'
[Breitbart] Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede called for Greenland to seek independence from the Kingdom of Denmark, noting that it is “time to take the next step.”

During a speech on Wednesday, Egede spoke about how, “like other countries in the world,” Greenland “must work to remove the obstacles to cooperation,” which he described as “the shackles of the colonial era.” Egede added that “history and current conditions have shown” Greenland’s cooperation with Demark “has not managed to create full equality.”

“It is time for us to take a step ourselves and shape our future, also with regard to who we will cooperate closely with and also who our trade relations will be,” Egede said. “For our cooperation with other countries, and our trade relations, cannot continue to take place solely through Denmark.”

Egede continued, “The Greenlandic people’s option for independence has been adopted through the provisions of the Self-Government Act, thereby creating a legal basis for how independence can be achieved.”

“A draft constitution, a constitution for our country, has also been prepared,” Egede added. “Work has already begun on creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state within the possibilities and provisions of the Self-Government Act.”

Egede’s call for independence from Denmark comes as President-elect Donald Trump has previously stated American ownership of Greenland is an “absolute necessity.”

In a post on Truth Social announcing Ken Howery as the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, Trump wrote, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

In response to Trump’s post, Egede stated that Greenland is “not for sale and will never be for sale.”

“Greenland is ours,” Egede said. “We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

#1 ...I am a firm believe in independence as long as the inhabitants want to stay that way - for instance, the Falklands.

On the other hand, IIRC Denmark covers about 60% of Greenland's national budget. Admittedly that's not a huge amount, and likely we have rounding errors in our budget that dwarf it. But it does raise the issue of how they expect to cover it.

Or, perhaps more appropriately, who they expect to cover it.

#2 I don't know, Mike, as 60% seems quite substantial to me. I'd even say 25% is a good chunk (imagine having our salary cut by 25%, for example). But hey, if Greenland can swing it, great. And would Greenland then "go" to the highest bidder?

DDM,

You betcha. What would the Chinese or Russians cough up to get a base that dominates the air and sea lanes across the Atlantic? They'd go behind the cushions at every dim sum place and vodka house to scrape up whatever the Greenlanders asked for.

And keep in mind that after independence, the FIRST thing the locals would do is toss the US out of Thule (or Pituffik as the locals call it)...and there goes a BIG chunk of our ballistic missile warning capability. The Russians alone would sign over the deed to Red Square just for that.

#4 They could fund their budget with modest mineral concessions. I think that is really the point of Trump’s discussion of Greenland. Greenland or Denmark could provide the natural resources that European countries are getting from Putin. The folks in Greenland control their own destiny. I expect that they’ll eventually do some stupid China deal and some politicians will walk away with bags of cash.
