#1 I just finished Mark Thompson's The White War: Life and Death on the Italian Front 1915-1919 and it chronicles the Italian madness that led to their land grab on their border. Italian Irredentism vs. Russian Irredentism. Demands for an ideal defensive frontier. Paranoia about the Austrian Hapsburgs vs. fears of NATO. Greed for the Trieste port, the list goes on and on... History may not repeat itself but it certainly rhymes.
