#2 Its why they get 'hazardous' duty pay.
They'll also check who packed the chute.

#3 Yep. $55/month in my time. Jumping out of C-119's should have doubled the hazard part.

"Jump Master: Which engine is on fire this time!"
"Load Master: Port!
"Jump Master: So my little chickadees, Starboard is it."

#4 So, Trooper, gonna climb right back on that horse?
No, Sarge, I'm gonna have to work up to it; gonna try a bar stool first.

#5 Ref #3 Above

I flew in a C-119 once, a flight back from Little Creek Amphib Base after a USMC Boat Ride luxury weekend for hundreds. We sat on the strip for over 20 minutes while they kept trying to start the starboard engine, at first urging it to start, but then praying it wouldn't because every time it backfired the plane shook like crazy, becoming convinced it was in very bad shape and wanted off. After what seemed like hours of sputtering, it started and the vibration seemed somehow permanent. The entire flight was prayerful, and that damn thing kept hiccuping the whole way back to Bolling AFB. Even the VA ANG crew chief looked terrified, never a good sign.

#7  Never flew in a C-119 but do remember building a Revell model of it when I was a kid (probably around 1963.)

#8 Flew in a few C-123's, landed in fewer. Never got used to the loadmaster bringing in 5 gallon trip cans from under each engine on start-up. Fuselage would fill with smoke at start-up also.

#9 My 1st jump at Fort Benning Jump School was From a C-119 in February 1967.
