#5 Dankie mineer Boerboel. Painful as it may be, some geo-political introspection might not be a bad thing. An examination of the aerial bombardment of foreign peoples and lands might be a good place to begin.

#10 Hard to believe Gorbie when he claims to be such a lover of freedom. IIRC, he was a dedicated communist who had the misfortune of being unable to hold the rickety old Soviet Union together. I suppose you could say he served a purpose but not on purpose.

#11 His legacy is a chaotic, unsystematic economic liberalization that went by the name Perestroika (restructuring) and a somewhat more transparent governing system that went by the name Glasnost (openess).

Both were overtaken by events in Poland, Hungary, Romania, etc. Ukraine, the Baltics.

Not much of a legacy really.

#13 If the Soviet Union was the patient, Gorbachev was the physician who couldn't save his patient. If Putin needs someone to blame for what he calls the "tragedy" of the Soviet Union's breakup, he should look at pretty much every Soviet leader from Khrushchev onwards. Not at NATO or the West. Hell, half the West was playing the role of ICU nurses at the end.
