#4 Putin is issuing an ultimatum. No more NATO expansion. No more broken promises. No more pointless humiliation of Russia.

"The threat on our western borders is, indeed, rising, as we have said multiple times," Putin said at a ceremony for ambassadors at the Kremlin on Wednesday, The New York Times reported. "In our dialogue with the US and its allies, we will insist on developing concrete agreements prohibiting any further eastward expansion of NATO and the placement there of weapons systems in the immediate vicinity of Russian territory."

Putin said Russia needs "legal guarantees" that Moscow's security concerns in the region will be respected.
"We need legal guarantees," Putin said. "Russia's legal concerns in the security sphere were ignored, and they now continue to be ignored."

If our leaders were even halfway intelligent and supple-minded, they'd realize it's actually a big opportunity for us and for Russia. This gives us cover to do what everyone here agrees we must do posthaste: shift our attention and our military-diplomatic focus toward the real threat, which is CHINA.

If we were to agree to make Ukraine a neutral, demilitarized, nonaligned border state -- like Finland during the Cold War, or Austria if you prefer -- and drop our foolish sanctions that only hurt ordinary Russians, we would lose nothing and gain immense goodwill from the Russian people and the Russian establishment.

Maybe even the first step into drawing Russia closer to, instead of pushing it away from, the West .... as we and Girbachev once talked of doing, in more sensible times.

Hell, we took away Ukraine's nukes and didn't give them back when Putin didn't honor his part of the agreement. He's been taking over Ukraine since 2013 or so using the NATO excuse with no sign of Ukraine actually joining NATO at any point in the last seven years.
