#5 If Smollett was a nobody, the hoax would probably be outed in no time. Because he's from a liberal-identified protected class (entertainer, gay) the pressure to get whatever did or didn't happen all the way under the rug is very great.

He is apparently of Jewish parentage as well. There was an article about his little adventure in The Times of Israel when the story first broke — I’m afraid I didn’t actually get beyond the blurb below the headline, but it can be searchd for if someone wants to know which parent gave him that inheritance.
