I don't know if the guards could have done anything. The guards probably weren't trained or armed nearly as well as the armed forces, and the terrorists are quite likely suicidal and probably would have killed most if not all of the hostages and guards if things went down badly.

I can't wait to hear about details on the implied "rescue operation". :-)

#2 Hide one hostage easy; hiding 100 hostages would be impossible without a lot of 'support'. Even the 'support' would be impossible to conceal for very long. It is not like the whole crowd are sitting on a plane with nowhere to go.
