#1 Call it a tax and it'll pass easily.

#2 So what are they going to do when they arrest criminals with uninsured guns? Until you deal with the criminal side of the equation you're just about power.

#3 Judge:"You are hereby sentenced to life in prison for premeditated murder. And an extra ten years for using an unregistered gun. Oh, and a $1000 fine for not having insurance."

I'm sure that the extra fine will be a deterrent to criminals. /sarcasm

#4 I'm so glad congress is working on such pressing and important issues! Even though gun murders are one of the lowest of the murder spectrum. Definitely more important than say, a budget! /sarc

#5 If the insurance were sold at a market rate (i.e. based on the actual risk) the cost would be negligible. Maybe $1/year for $1m in coverage -- not even worth the cost of administering the policy.

So what makes me think this "insurance" would be something else -- and priced accordingly...

#6 The only agency allowed to sell you a policy would be the BATF. The cost would be whatever they wanted you to pay.

#7 I wonder if firearm accident liability is included under standard homeowner and umbrella policies? As Iblis says, this category of liability should be relatively affordable. The high risk catagory could be if the owner is liable for what gets done with his guns if they are stolen, or if he is required to carry insurance covering his own purposeful misuses.

#8 If the insurance were sold at a market rate ...

See Obamacare for the 'saving' in insurance.

#9 Perhaps we may one day per forced to choose between a hip replacement and insurance for our Model-1911.
