#6  apparently the Margarita was created for Ms King

Among the bar's clientele was an actress named Marjorie King. While all her friends were taking advantage of Carlos' talents as bartender, Ms. King did not partake in the afternoon revelry. She had an unusual problem. She was allergic, so the tale went, to all alcohol except tequila.

What luck, Carlos cajoled. Tequila is the national drink of Mexico, he said as he poured the actress a straight shot of the clear, strong liquid, brought out a plate of fresh limes, and set a salt shaker beside her on the bar. Marjorie wrinkled her pretty nose, gave Carlos a "not so fast" look, and informed him she hated the taste of it.

What was a girl to do? In those wild and reckless days not long after Prohibition, how could one sit idly by and not join in the fun? Herrera was determined to put an end to Ms. King's misery. He went to work.
ULTIMATE CONCOCTION

Herrera decided he would create the ultimate concoction for the attractive actress. He started experimenting and came up with a winner: three parts white tequila, two parts triple sec, one part fresh lime juice, a pinch of sugar. As the day was hot, he added shaved ice and blended the mixture with a shaker. Ms. King liked the looks of the drink immediately, Herrera reportedly said.

But how to serve it? Marjorie King was no ordinary gal, and Herrera wanted to pay tribute to her sense of style. Something special was needed. He grabbed a champagne glass, dipped its rim in lemon juice, and twirled it in a bowl of salt. Re-shaking the contents, he then poured the frothy liquid into the champagne glass and presented it to the starlet.

The result: the soon-to-be famous Margarita, shaken, not stirred. And what a coincidence. The drink included all the ingredients of a traditional tequila shooter -- tequila, lime and salt, but in a more appealing package.

Afghanistan
52 Taliban killed in one day in Afghanistan
A blitz of attacks across Afghanistan led to the deaths of 52 armed Taliban members in the past day, the Ministry of Interior said Wednesday.
Likely just propaganda and most of these jokers will reanimate soon but it's nice to read...
The operations were carried out by Afghanistan's national police, army, National Directorate of Security and NATO-led coalition forces, the ministry said. An additional 45 Taliban members were wounded and 21 others arrested. Authorities also confiscated ammunition and improvised explosive devices in the sweep, which spanned 10 provinces, the interior ministry said.

Wouldn't surprise me if it were true. It's said that amateurs talk tactics whereas professionals talk logistics. I'd say that professionals can talk logistics all they want, but now that it's impossible for modern armies to live off the land, it's the financiers that win wars. And there's no way that Pakistan's monetary support for the Taliban outweighs that billions that the US and India bring to the game. As long as Uncle Sam makes payroll for the Afghan government, the Taliban will slowly be whittled away.

Mali Tuareg Rebels Appoint Town Chief in Show of Strength
[An Nahar] A rebel group seeking independence in northern Mali said on Thursday it had appointed an "administrator" to Kidal in a show of strength after French-led troops liberated the town from an Islamist occupation.

The Tuareg National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA) told Agence La Belle France Presse that Mohamed Ali Ag Albessaty, previously a local government functionary, would serve as its top official for Kidal.

"We have appointed an administrator to manage the city of Kidal," Mohamed Ag Mamoud, an MNLA leader, told AFP from the town of Tessalit, near the Algerian border.

The MNLA captured Kidal, 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) northeast of the capital Bamako, on March 30 last year as part of a Tuareg rebellion for the independence of northern Mali, which they call Azawad.

The movement then took the towns of Gao and Timbuktu, declaring the independence of Azawad from Mali, but they quickly lost control to Islamist militias who had formerly been their allies.

French and Chadian forces moved into the town to bring it back under government control at the end of January and it serves as a base for French and Chadian troops fighting Islamists holed up in the region's Ifoghas mountains.

The appointment will be seen by the government as an act of defiance by the MNLA, which has said it would oppose any move into Kidal by the Malian army, accused by the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
of rights abuses against Tuareg and Arab communities, often confused with jihadists.

The Islamic Movement of Azawad (MIA), a Tuareg group which broke away from Ansar Dine, one of the three armed Islamist groups which occupied northern Mali for several months in 2012, told AFP it had agreed to the appointment.

Reports: Algeria Forces Kill Islamists in Restive Kabylie
[An Nahar] Algerian security forces have killed five Islamists this week in the restive region of Kabylie, including an "emir" and a jihadist recently sentenced to death in absentia, reports said on Thursday.

The special forces killed the five men on Monday evening and Tuesday in a raid on the village of Attouche, in the Makouda area, near the main Kabylie city of blood-stained Tizi Ouzou, Liberty newspaper quoted security sources as saying.

Among those killed were Badache Said, 39, who led the Ibn el-Moqafa militia, and Nouali Hamza, both of whom were handed death sentences in absentia last week along with 33 others, including al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb chief Abdelmalik Droukdel
... aka Abdel Wadoud, was a regional leader of the GSPC for several years before becoming the group's supremo in 2004 following the death of then-leader Nabil Sahraoui. Under Abdel Wadoud's leadership the GSPC has sought to develop itself from a largely domestic entity into a larger player on the international terror stage. In September 2006 it was announced that the GSPC had joined forces with al-Qaeda and in January 2007 the group officially changed its name to the Al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb....

They were all implicated in an attack on an Algerian army barracks at Azazga near blood-stained Tizi Ouzou in April 2011, in which 17 soldiers were killed, Liberty reported.

Another slain Islamist, Karim Mesrour, from the Kabylie town of Dellys, was considered "very influential" among jihadist groups in the eastern region, a stronghold of Islamist thugs, pro-government daily El-Moudjahid reported.

Algeria, which has battled Islamist Islamic fascisti since its devastating civil war in the 1990s, was rocked by an al-Qaeda-linked hostage attack in January on the In Amenas desert gas plant, 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) southeast of Algiers.

During the siege and army rescue operation that followed, 38 hostages, all but one of whom were foreign, and 29 Death Eaters were killed.

Salafists destroy major Sufi shrine
[Libya Herald] The Al-Andlusi mausoleum in Tajura area, one of the major Sufi shrines in Libya, was destroyed early this morning, Thursday, in a kaboom that is being blamed on Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...

Seemingly there is no word in Arabic for "revulsion."
An eye-witness, who was at work nearby, told the Libya Herald that he heard three "very loud" kabooms around 4 am. He said that he did not see any one near the shrine at the time of the bombing.

The shrine, on a prominent knoll on the Beach Road some 15 kilometres east of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, is protected under the law as a national monument.

Sadat Badri, head of Tripoli Local Council, told the Libya Herald that the people of Tajra and Tripoli were shocked and "distressed of this criminal act".

There would be consequences for those responsible, he said. Libya would show the world that it is a state of law and peace, he noted, adding that the police had began an investigation and were inspecting the site of the incident,

Tripoli Local Council would have to develop a security plan in cooperation with the competent authorities to protect such important historical site in Tripoli, he said.

The Al-Andalusi shrine dates back more than 500 years and is named after Sidi Mohamed al-Andalusi who was born in 1490.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Caucasus gunman identified as local lawmaker
One of five gunmen killed in a special operation in the Russian republic of Dagestan last week has been identified as a local lawmaker, the Investigative Committee said on Thursday.

Five gunmen and two special forces officers were killed during an armed battle in the village of Semender on Saturday. Government troops had entered the village three days earlier in search of a suspected member of a militant group.

One of the gunmen was identified as Magomedkhabib Magomedaliyev, chairman of a local legislative assembly in the Untsukul district.
*speechless*
Magomedaliyev was elected to the local Duma in 2010 on the ruling United Russia's party list.

Identification of the other four gunmen has been made difficult due to their bodies being badly burned.

China-Japan-Koreas
US flies stealth bombers over South Korea
[Dawn] The United States said two nuclear-capable B-2 stealth bombers flew "deterrence" missions over South Korea on Thursday, defying apocalyptic threats of retribution from North Korea against ongoing war games.

The deployment of the stealth bombers was intended to send a potent message to Pyongyang about the US commitment to defending South Korea against any aggression, as military tensions on the Korean peninsula soar.

It came shortly after the North severed its last-remaining military hotline with South Korea and put its rocket units on combat status with a threat to target US bases in the Pacific region.

The two B-2s, from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, flew the 13,000-mile (20,800-kilometre) round-trip in a "single continuous mission", dropping dummy ordnance on a target range in the South, the US military said in a statement.

"This demonstrates the United States' ability to conduct long-range, precision strikes quickly and at will," the statement said.

The bombers were participating in South Korean-US military exercises that have incensed North Korea, which has threatened to unleash a second Korean War and launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes on South Korea and the US mainland.

"The United States is steadfast in its alliance commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea," the US statement said.

Earlier Thursday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told his South Korean counterpart that Seoul could rely on all the military protection the United States has to offer -- nuclear, conventional and missile defence.

The US and South Korean militaries signed a new pact last week, providing for a joint military response to even low-level provocation by North Korea.

Yonhap news agency quoted a Seoul military official as saying Washington had recently approved the sale of US "bunker buster" bombs to South Korea -- capable of targeting the North's extensive underground military facilities.

HHHMMMMM, HHHMMMM, LA or San Diego but N-O-T San Francisco???

* CHINA DAILY > CHINESE FLEET HEADED FOR TRAINING IN WESTERN PACIFIC.

PLAN already has a force off Malaysia [disputed James/Meiji Shoal], wid USN in PHIL, + Russian naval force off Vietnam + Putin's suddenly ordered MILEX in the Caspian.

All thats missing is INDIA ...

Oh, wait ...

FYI BHARAT RAKSHAK > VIDEO: INDIA WARNS CHINA: "WE WILL USE FORCE TO PROTECT OUR OIL-GAS INTERESTS", e.g. in the South China Sea | CHINA + INDIA IN OIL-GAS TENSIONS AS SHADOW PLAYERS READY FOR ENTRY.

VERSUS

* YONHAP > NORTH KOREA CAUTIOUS IN CHOOSING TIMING FOR ANY ATTACK: US EXPERTS.

* PRAVDA.RU > NORTH KOREA INCREASES MISSLE POTENTIAL, as per NucWarheads + LRBM delivery Systems.

Personally I'm more worried about a PLA 2nd Arty - you know, SSSSHHHHH "North Korea/DPRK" - LRBM strike agz CONUS bases where the bulk of USN nuclear aircraft carriers + USAF strategic bombers are parked due to the Sequester + related US Debt woes.

AT PRESENT, BY THE ARTICS ABOVE IT WOULD APPEAR THAT KIM JONG-UN [China] IS INTERESTED IN A SELECTIVE OR "LIMITED NUCLEAR/MISSLE STRIKE(S)" AGZ HAWAII + CONUS, N-O-T SEEMINGLY ANY FULL-SCALE STRIKE.

IMO thats somewhat or partially positive/good news for Guam + US-Allies, as the DPRK = China? may be only interested at this time in destroying the principal "offensive" instruments of US strategic military power, i.e. CVNS + FBM Subs + heavy Bombers, but NOT destroy the US andor US regional allies in full-scale, "Mutually Destructive NucWar [MAD]"???

It may also indic that the DPRK = China ideally favors a SHORT WAR = CONVENTIONAL-LIMITED NUKE BLITZ, NOT A LONG OR PROTRACTIVE
WAR LET ALONE MAD???

IOW, WHILE SOME MAJOR OR STRATEGIC US MILBASES ARE WHOLLY DESTROYED, OTHERS ARE HIT ONLY WID CONVENTIONAL FIREPOWER OR AT WORST "LIGHT" NUCWEAPONS = TACNUKES THAT DAMAGES BUT DOES NOT DESTROY A GEOGRAPHIC AREA???

The key will be iff the above DPRK = Chinese strategy succeeds in achieving for China its desired unchallenged or unonstructed "strategic access" thru the "First Island Chain" into WESTPAC + SOPAC.

* IIRC BHARAT RAKSHAK [paraph] > INDIA-CHINA: THE REALITY OF THEIR GEOPOLITICAL EQUATION.

IIRC ARTIC = China may see itself as far ahead of India as a LAND POWER, BUT IT CURRENTLY LACKS THE AIR + NAVAL POWER, ETC. TO UNILATERALLY OR ROUTINELY IMPOSE ITS WILL ON INDIA + OTHER LESSOR BUT AGGRESSIVE ASIAN NATIONS.

Pakistani man arrested for military espionage in Germany
[Dawn] A Pak man working in a German technology research centre has been tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
and incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
on suspicion of military espionage, Germany's state prosecutor said Thursday.

The 28-year-old employee was registered as a student at the centre where he worked in the northwestern city of Bremen.

Named only as Umar R., the man is suspected of "attempting to procure information about sophisticated military technologies" since October, a statement from the prosecutor said.
"Tell me, professor, what's your fave way to keep nuclear bombs from rusting in storage?"
According to the news magazine Focus, which reported his arrest, Umar R. allegedly obtained illegally studies into the piloting and navigation of drones until he was caught out by a colleague.
Aren't there video games that teach that?
The company where the man worked develops technology for Israeli surveillance aircraft used by German troops in Afghanistan, the magazine reported.

Cyprus Court Gives Hizbullah Man 4 Years over 'Anti-Israel Plot'
[An Nahar] A Cyprus court sentenced a self-confessed Hizbullah member on Thursday to four years in jail after he was convicted of involvement in a plot to attack Israeli interests on the island.

The official Cyprus News Agency said the criminal court in the south coast city of Limassol sentenced Hossam Taleb Yaacoub, a dual Lebanese and Swedish citizen, to four years minus time already served in prison since last July.

He was found guilty on March 22 on five counts -- including participating in a criminal organization, taking part in a criminal act and money laundering.

Yaacoub, 24, told the court last month that he had collected information on Israeli tourists visiting the island, but denied plotting to attack them.

He said he had been asked to log information on Israeli flight arrivals and note down the number plates of buses carrying tourists from the Jewish state.

Yaacoub said he was unaware what the information was for and was tossed in the clink
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in July last year before he could communicate the information to a handler, whom he did not know, in Leb.

On Thursday he made no outward show of emotion after the sentence was passed, and before being led out of the courtroom under armed guard.

"There is no doubt that these are serious offenses because by committing them, at the very least it potentially jeopardized the safety of Israeli citizens and targets on the territory of the Cyprus Republic," the court ruled.

"Even if the targets were not carried out, it still harms the security of citizens and the legal system, whose guardian is the court," it added.

Before passing sentence the court did take into consideration the fact that Yaacoub had cooperated with police and that he had been supposedly recruited by Hizbullah at the age of 19.

In mitigation, his defense lawyer said Yaacoub did not carry out any violent act and has a clean criminal record. He also did not transport or carry guns or explosives.

Israeli filmmaker beaten unconscious at French film festival
Via Gateway Pundit.
A group of Arab youths have reportedly attacked an Israeli film director, Yariv Horowitz.
Ah, youts...
Horowitz, who directed the film "Rock the Casbah" was participating at a film festival in France when he was attacked by a group of Arab youths just before the film won the best film award.

He is reported to have lost consciousness and has been subsequently treated. Horowitz is said to have returned immediately to the festival after treatment. Authorities are estimating that the attack was racially motivated.
Good estimate...
After the violent incident, Horowitz's film won the Special Prize of the Jury for Best Picture. Israeli singer and musician Assaf Amdursky also received an award for a movie he wrote music.

The film "Rock the Casbah", starring Yon Tumarkin, follows the story of young soldiers in the first intifada in Gaza. The soliders are located on the roof of a Palestinian family whose son is involved in the murder of one of their battalion.
So what happened to the youts who beat Mr. Horowitz?

India-Pakistan
Suicide bomber kills 12 in Pakistan
A suicide bomber on Friday targeted a senior Pakistani police commander, killing 12 people, including two women, near the US consulate in Peshawar, officials said.

It was the latest in a string of attacks as the country prepares to hold historic elections on May 11. The vote will mark the first democratic transition of power in Pakistan, which has been governed by four military rulers.

A security official said Abdul Majeed Marwat, commander of the paramilitary Frontier Constabulary for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, survived the attack and was taken to a military hospital with "only scratches".

Around 28 other people were wounded in the blast, medics said.

"It was a suicide attack, the target was the FC commander," police official Arshad Khan told AFP.

Witnesses said the bomber was on foot and struck when the convoy of the police chief stopped at a military checkpost in the busy cantonment area of Peshawar. The checkpost is about 300 metres from the heavily guarded American consulate, which has itself been the target of attacks in the past, an AFP reporter said.

"We have received six dead bodies, including two women," Sayed Jameel Shah, a spokesman for Peshawar's main Lady Reading Hospital, told AFP. He later confirmed that two of the injured died in hospital.

"They were in serious condition in the neurosurgery ward," he said.

Another four bodies and 17 other wounded were taken to the Combined Military Hospital, a senior security official told AFP.

Malaysia kills Sulu sultanate member, arrests six more
Malaysian security forces gunned down a member of the Sultanate of Sulu and captured 6 others during an operation on Thursday in Sabah’s Lahad Datu town.

The slain Filipino was not immediately identified, but Malaysian officials said he attacked one of the police commandos with a machete and was killed in Kampung Simunul at around 9 a.m. during a house-to-house search. The commando was unhurt in the attack.

Police said those arrested were four men and two women and are being investigated.

More than 300 people have been arrested by Malaysian authorities on suspicion they were either supporting or helping the group of Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram who invaded Sabah in February.

Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram sent his brother Raja Muda Agbimuddin and about 200 armed followers to exert their historical claim over the oil-rich state of Malaysia. But fighting erupted between Malaysian forces and the intruders following a bloody standoff.

Malaysia said more than 60 of the sultan’s men and ten of its own were killed in the fighting.

Thai militants demand release of all prisoners
Representatives of terrorist insurgent groups demanded Thai authorities release all prisoners convicted in southern attacks and void arrest warrants issued for suspected terrorists militants during the first round of formal peace talks in Kuala Lumpur Thursday.

National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Lt Gen Paradorn Pattanatabut said Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) spokesman Hassan Taib had submitted a demand for an amnesty for terrorists insurgents which encompassed four points: To withdraw arrest warrants against suspected terrorists insurgents; to release prisoners convicted in southern violence cases; to clear pending cases against suspected terrorists insurgents; and revoke a rebel suspects blacklist.

Lt Gen Paradorn said he rejected the demand to release prisoners, but that the other points would be discussed with the Justice Ministry and other relevant agencies.

The NSC chief said he called on the terrorists insurgents to refrain from attacking civilian targets. In response, Mr Taib promised to try and convince other terrorists separatist groups to curb violence. However, Mr Taib admitted it would be difficult to persuade terrorists insurgent groups opposing the peace talks to scale down their attacks.

The terrorists separatists were represented by six members of the BRN Coordinate, BRN Congress and Pattani United Liberation Organisation (PULO).

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria MP: Insurgents Control Large Parts of Daraa
[An Nahar] A Syrian MP from the southern province of Daraa bordering Jordan on Thursday painted a bleak picture of the situation there, saying that beturbanned goons have seized part of the main highway to Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...

"Syria is no longer going through a crisis. It is plunged in total war. Terrorism has spread in Syria and so has chaos. This is reality, and all Syrians know it," Walid al-Zohbi told parliament in a session broadcast live on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
"This is also happening in all towns and villages in Daraa province, which is torn from east to west after the army withdrew from many positions," he said.

"They may have pulled out for tactical reasons, we don't know. But at any rate, Islamic fascisti from al-Nusra Front have taken their place," he added of a jihadist group with roots in Iraq, classed by Washington as "terrorists".

Some MPs called out and tried to silence Zohbi, but he refused to be interrupted.

"There are people who send reports claiming the Daraa highway has been secured, but it's not true. The area stretching from Khirbet Ghazaleh to the border crossing is under the control of gangs," Zohbi said.

Rebels in southern Syria have taken a 25-kilometer (15-mile) swathe of land stretching from Jordan to the sensitive ceasefire line with Israel in the Golan Heights, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday.

"The fact that the highway was cut off led to the fall of the most important military position, which I will not name because this is being broadcast live on television," said Zohbi.

"From the south, we are totally exposed. We are only protected from the west, by Base 61. The people are living in hell and their morale has hit rock bottom," he raged.

"I want to address the presidency of the republic and the government, hoping that what I have to say will be heard. For 20 days I have been speaking to bigwigs about where the rebels are based, but there have been no results so far," he added.

Syrian Observatory: Fierce Battles in Damascus Outskirts
[An Nahar] Fresh battles raged Thursday in flashpoint districts on the outskirts of Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
, a monitoring group said, while army tanks pounded thug enclaves near the Syrian capital.

"Fierce battles broke out at dawn on Thursday pitting rebels against troops in the (northeastern) district of Qaboon, while tanks shelled the neighborhood's edges," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Clashes also raged on a main road linking the southern Damascus area of Yarmuk to Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, said the Britannia-based group.

Both districts have seen intermittent fighting in recent months, with rebels taking up positions all along the capital's southern belt despite consistent army attempts to force the insurgency out of the city.

Fighting was also reported in the southwestern district of Qadam, said the Observatory, while army tanks pounded the nearby town of Daraya, keeping up a relentless weeks-long assault aimed at crushing thugs.

Damascus has suffered an escalation in violence in recent days. Rebels have stepped up mortar attacks on districts in the heart of the capital and the army has clashed daily with faceless myrmidons in several neighborhoods.

"The fighting is slowly escalating in Damascus," said Ahmad al-Khatib, a Damascus province-based front man of the Syrian Revolution General Commission, a network of activists on the ground.

"In recent days we have seen frequent festivities around Abbasiyeen square, which is one of the capital's main squares," he told Agence La Belle France Presse via the Internet, adding rebels were infiltrating the northeast of the capital through Adra village.

Thursday's violence comes a day after at least 148 people were killed in violence across Syria, the Observatory said. Among them were 63 civilians, 28 soldiers and 57 rebel fighters.

#1  Mortars allow the rebels to take the war to regime rear areas, and that will be bad for regime morale.

I can't see Assad making his last stand in Damascus, so I'm wondering how long before a withdrawl to the coastal mountains.

#2  If the casualty counts are correct, the daily rebel body count is 1/5 of Vietnam War numbers, which may indicate the war's intensity is far lower than Vietnam, but about as high or higher than the counter-insurgency phase of Iraqi Freedom.

US Army vet charged with using a RPG outside USA
U.S. Army veteran Eric Harroun of Phoenix AZ has been charged with conspiring with an al Qaeda group to wage war against the Syrian regime.

Harroun, 30, was charged Thursday in federal court in northern Virginia with plotting to use a rocket-propelled grenade - considered a weapon of mass destruction - outside the U.S., an offense which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, according to the Justice Department.

The FBI began investigating Harroun after videos and photos were posted online of him fighting in Syria, posing with weapons and boasting of killing members of the Syrian regime. In one post, he claims credit for downing a Syrian helicopter.

Prosecutors say Harroun has also been fighting with the al-Nusrah Front, which is commonly known as al Qaeda in Iraq. According to the State Department, al-Nusrah has claimed responsibility for roughly 600 terrorist attacks in Syria.

Harroun returned to the U.S. on Wednesday after several interviews with FBI investigators in Turkey, where they grilled him about his dealings with al-Nusrah, according to a nine-page criminal complaint
