#6 This is pretty interesting stuff. I came across this a few days ago and did some research. Ended up updating the Wikipedia page on the Chiemgauer and some other related pages. It turns out that there's a close link between this kind of scrip and gift cards.

A fairly unique feature of the Chiemgauer is it depreciates 2% per quarter. Besides encouraging expenditure in the Chiemgau, the velocity of this scrip is high because of the depreciation. Note that some gift cards also depreciate (though that's not allowed here in Massachusetts).
