--Tech & Moderator Notes
Minor attack this morning
In case you missed it, Rantburg came under attack this morning from, we think, northern Virginia.

The script probably used wasn't very sophisticated, and the 300 spammed comments were more annoying than anything else. We do have tools that can be used to stop similar attacks, but we really can't prevent them. We only can prevent them from recurring.

So the attacker(s) IP was banned and its cruft was cleaned out.

We are working in the background with safety measures. As an example, the backup site is fully running. We advise you you only can access it between 30 minutes after and 59 minutes after owing to the task that server must perform. Unavoidable. But you can comment there, albeit they will be wiped in the next hourly update.

A backup O Club is being worked on as we speak. A separate backup o-club, programmed in perl is here. It's pretty crude and rudimentary, but you can post messages there.

You are free to move about the blog.

22 LA sheriff's recruits on morning run injured, several critically, after group mowed down by wrong-way driver
[NYPOST] Several law enforcement recruits have been left with "life-altering injuries" — including loss of limbs — after a wrong-way driver plowed into them on a training run in Los Angeles early Wednesday, authorities said.

At least 25 recruits from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and nearby police departments were maimed when a 22-year-old driver veered onto the opposite side of the road in Whittier just before 6.30 a.m.

Five recruits were left critically maimed in the horrific ordeal — including some who suffered broken bones, head trauma and amputations, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.

Four recruits suffered moderate injuries and 16 others obtained minor injuries, the sheriff added.

They had been running in formation on the side of the road with about 50 other recruits when the SUV — traveling at roughly 30 to 40 mph — suddenly mowed them down.

"They had zero warning," LASD Capt. Pat MacDonald, whose department oversees the recruits, said at a news conference.

#4  What is known is that the driver is a 22-year-old Hispanic man, who was detained at the scene of the crash. He is being treated for minor injuries resulting from the incident and reportedly is cooperating with police.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the man told police he was “sleepy” at the time of the accident. Law enforcement officials said they did not detect the odour of alcohol on the man’s breath.

Later, LAPD Sheriff Alex Villanueva confirmed that the 22-year-old had passed a field sobriety test after the crash and blew 0.0 in a blood alcohol test.

#10  From Skidmark’s Daily Mail link:

The driver reportedly blew a 0.0, but was found to have marijuana in his car.

It remains unclear whether he was high at the time of the crash Wednesday morning, but the Los Angeles Times reports he told cops on the scene that he was sleepy.

Afghanistan
Clashes in Paktia Along Durand Line Have Stopped: Islamic Emirate
[ToloNews] The Islamic Emirate said that the situation has become normal after festivities occurred in the Dand-e-Patan district of Paktia alongside the Durand Line between the Islamic Emirate and Pak military.

A front man for the Islamic Emirate said that efforts are being made to prevent such incidents in the future.

On Tuesday festivities occurred between the Islamic Emirate and Pak forces along the Durand Line in Dand-e-Patan district, said 203 Corps front man Mohammad Yar Jawad.

The videos which are circulating on social media show fire exchanged between the two sides.

"There is no problem now. The situation is normal. But I hope there will be no problem in all areas of the border," said Bilal Karimi, deputy front man for the Islamic Emirate.

Karimi said that Kabul wants to have good relations with all neighboring countries.

"The stance of the Islamic Emirate is to have good relations with all countries, particularly with the neighboring countries," he said.

The analysts said that the two sides should solve their issues via negotiations.

"It is necessary that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
sits with the Pak officials and talks about this problem and finds a solution for this problem," said Stana Gul Shirzad, a political analyst.

5 ISIS Members Allegedly Killed by Taliban in Northwestern Afghanistan
[KhaamaPress] The security authorities of the Taliban

province in northwestern Afghanistan stated that the group’s forces have killed 5 ISIS members in the province’s district 12.

The Taliban intelligence agency in Herat province said that in an operation of the Taliban forces in the Haji Abbass area of Herat province’s police district 12, 5 members of the ISIS terrorist group have been killed.

The clash between the Taliban forces and the members of ISIS took place in Herat province on Tuesday night, November 15, at around 9:30, the Taliban intelligence newsletter said.

Meanwhile,

the Taliban also allegedly killed 5 members of ISIS in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar

According to Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who spoke with the EU official, ISIS and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan "have now been hit hard, they lost their ability to resist and attack."

The Taliban government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, also announced discovering an ISIS cell in Kabul the Afghan capital, and the killing of 5 ISIS members who he referred to as "Kharijites", earlier this week.

Prisoner Transport Vehicle Explosion Leaves 5 Injured
[KhaamaPress] Local sources in the northern Afghan province of Takhar reported a kaboom and said that a mine detonation near the province’s center was allegedly intended for a prisoner-transporting vehicle.

According to the source, this explosion took place on Wednesday, November 16, before noon, on 3rd Gudam Street, in front of the court gate of Taleqan city, the lovely provincial capital of Takhar.

The domestic media outlets also reported that the detonation of the mine planted to target the prisoner transport vehicle resulted in the injuries of 5 inmates.

The sources added that two military Ranger vehicles used by the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
as part of the prisoner convoy were also destroyed by the earth-shattering kaboom in central Takhar.

The Taliban police chief office in Takhar has also verified the occurrence of the mine detonation and stated that an investigation has been started to investigate into the earth-shattering kaboom.

The Taliban office of the chief of police in Takhar province, in a newsletter, stated that the earth-shattering kaboom was mild, stating that no one has been harmed.

While an investigation, according to the security officials of the Taliban, is underway, no group or organization has taken responsibility for the earth-shattering kaboom.

Daily Evacuation Brief November 17, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • EXPLOSIONS IN BALKH AND TAKHAR – In separate instances explosions were reported in both Provinces yesterday.

    • In Takhar, a roadside bomb was detonated outside the gates of the appeals court in the capital city of Taloqan at approximately 0930hrs local time. It is believed that two Taliban vehicles were destroyed in the blast but no word of casualties has been received. Unconfirmed reports that the vehicles may have been transporting prisoners are circulating on social media. No group has claimed credit for the attack.

    • In Mazar-i-Sharif, a hand grenade was detonated and is thought to have injured 5 people. It is not clear who was injured yet and the circumstances surrounding the blast are murky. Mazar-i-Sharif has previously been the scene of accidental grenade detonations as careless Taliban recruits triggered grenades while playing with them. Further information is required.

  • MAJOR RAIL PROJECT ON HOLD – European news reports are claiming the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan rail project, long heralded as a major economic investment win by the Taliban, has been placed on hold. The nearly $6 billion dollar project was reportedly suspended due to the Taliban’s recent announcement concerning the implementation of Sharia Law across the National justice system. If confirmed, analysts agree it will be a major blow to the Taliban’s aspirations and will cause further domestic discontent with the regime. Uzbekistan has long played the role of “good cop” with regard to the Taliban. The tectonic shift represents a serious warning to the Taliban regime.

  • TALIBAN REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO ERADICATING TERROR GROUPS AFTER HERAT OPERATION – The Defense Minister said in an OIC meeting that the Taliban are taking the fight against ISIS-K seriously and pointed to the recent security operations in Kabul and Herat as evidence they seek to eradicate the terror group. Based on troop displacements and border security measures, it seems clear that none of Afghanistan’s neighbors believe the Taliban will be able to contain the threat that ISIS-K and other terror groups known to be in the country may pose to regional states.

  • MOSCOW SUMMIT – The Russian-hosted event called for a comprehensive solution to the Afghanistan issue and the consensus seemed to be focused on economic solutions to provide stability. China and Russia levied heavy criticism at the West and the United States in particular for the crisis. Iran’s delegate added to the criticism and called for a regional solution and a rejection of a return of US forces. The summit was universal in calling on the Taliban to form an inclusive government.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Paktika: One non-combatant was reportedly killed near the joint border by Pakistan Security Forces. News reports claim the civilian was killed when Pakistani soldiers fired across the border in the Barmal district yesterday evening,
Takhar:A roadside bomb destroyed two Taliban vehicles when it was detonated outside the gates of the appeals court in Taloqan. No injuries were reported and it is not clear who planted the device,

NEXT 24 HOURS
TENSIONS REMAIN ALONG AFGHANISTAN/PAKISTAN BORDER – Another cross-border incident in Paktika illustrates the elevated tensions between the two countries. Afghanistan has yet to submit to Pakistan’s demands to hand over the individual who is thought to have instigated the shootings at Spin Boldak-Chaman. For its part, the Taliban has sought to create confusion over the event and has announced the establishment of a Loya Jirga to look into the matter. Whether Pakistan agrees to the ploy or not, their border forces remain at elevated security levels and there is a concern in Islamabad that the TTP has become emboldened by the border scuffles and has launched a complimentary campaign in Waziristan that may or may not be supported from the Taliban in Afghanistan. The situation remains perilous and will continue to pose a threat to at-risk Afghans near the border and who may attempt a crossing. We assess that if cross-border hostilities continue, Pakistan is likely to close the Torkham crossing to all but humanitarian aid traffic until the dispute is resolved.

Chinese navy fleet returns from Horn of Africa escort mission
[ShabelleMedia] A Chinese navy fleet returned to the port city of Zhoushan in east China’s Zhejiang Province on Tuesday after completing its mission of escorting civilian vessels in the Gulf of Aden and in the waters off Somalia.

The 41st fleet of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy, comprising the missile destroyer Suzhou, the missile frigate Nantong and the supply ship Chaohu, escorted 38 Chinese and foreign ships during the mission. The fleet set sail from Zhoushan on May 18, 2022.

The escort squad traveled nearly 90,000 nautical miles during its 182-day voyage without entering a port for rest.

China in December 2008 began dispatching naval ships to carry out vessel protection operations in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia.

Arabia
Israeli billionaire’s oil tanker hit by bomb-carrying drone off Oman; Iran blamed
[IsraelTimes] Shipping firm ultimately owned by Idan Ofer says attack caused minor damage to Pacific Zircon, no injuries or spillage; Israeli official, US military accuse Iran, which is silent

An oil tanker associated with an Israeli billionaire has been struck by a bomb-carrying drone off the coast of Oman amid heightened tensions with Iran, officials said Wednesday.

The attack on the Liberian-flagged oil tanker Pacific Zircon happened Tuesday night off the coast of Oman, a Middle East-based defense official told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they did not have authorization to discuss the attack publicly.

While no one immediately grabbed credit for the attack, suspicion immediately fell on Iran.

Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, the head of the US Central Command, told the Wall Street Journal that Iran
...They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
was behind the attack.

"This unmanned aerial vehicle attack against a civilian vessel in this critical maritime strait demonstrates, once again, the destabilizing nature of Iranian malign activity in the region," Gen. Kurilla said.

An Israeli official, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss unpublicized details of the attack, said that it appeared Iran carried out the attack with a Shahed-136 exploding drone. Iran has supplied those drones to Russia, which has been using them to target infrastructure and civilian targets in Ukraine.

"It is an Iranian attack, there is a consensus on this in the Israeli intelligence and defense community," the official said.

Pacific Zircon is operated by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which is a company ultimately owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.

In a statement, Eastern Pacific Shipping said the Pacific Zircon, carrying gas oil, had been "hit by a projectile" some 150 miles (240 kilometers) off the coast of Oman.

"We are in communication with the vessel and there are no reports of injuries or pollution. All crew are safe and accounted for," the company said. "There is some minor damage to the vessel’s hull but no spillage of cargo or water ingress."

Tehran and Israel have been engaged in a yearslong shadow war in the wider Middle East, with some drone attacks targeting Israeli-associated vessels traveling around the region.

The US also blamed Iran for a series of attacks occurring off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in 2019. Tehran then had begun escalating its nuclear program following the United States’ unilateral withdrawal from its atomic deal with world powers.

Iran’s government did not acknowledge the attack on the Pacific Zircon. Iran’s mission to the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Oil prices rose slightly as news of the attack spread, with benchmark Brent crude trading above $94 a barrel.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the vessel was Wednesday. Satellite-tracking data from late Tuesday provided by MarineTraffic.com put the vessel deep in the Arabian Sea after leaving the Omani port of Sohar.

Since the collapse of Iran’s nuclear deal, nonproliferation experts warn the Islamic Theocratic Republic now has enough enriched uranium to make at least one nuclear weapon if it chose, though Tehran insists its program is peaceful.

Iran also has been lashing out at its perceived enemies abroad amid monthslong nationwide protests now challenging its theocracy.

Torbjorn Soltvedt, an analyst at the risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft, said the attack "does not come as a surprise."

"The risk of attacks against shipping and energy infrastructure in the wider region is rising mainly due to the lack of progress in US-Iranian nuclear diplomacy and the decision by Washington to apply further sanctions pressure on Iran," he said. "Since 2019, Iran has consistently responded to new US sanctions with covert military action in the region."

"There is not just an increasing risk of disruptive attacks against energy infrastructure in the region, but also a growing risk of a wider military confrontation with more serious consequences for world energy markets," he added.

The oil tanker attack also comes just days ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
. While Doha maintains good relations with Tehran, with whom it shares a massive natural offshore natural gas field, Israelis will be attending the soccer tournament. Iran’s national team also will face Britannia and the US in first-round matches, two countries it accuses of fomenting the unrest in Iran.
An Nahar adds:
"There is some minor damage to the vessel's hull but no spillage of cargo or water ingress," said the company which is owned by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer -- one of two sons of shipping magnate Sammy Ofer, who died in 2011.

The tanker was carrying 42,000 tons of gas oil and bound for Buenos Aires, according to Samir Madani, co-founder of website TankerTrackers.com, an oil shipping online research firm.

Al-Qaeda activities reported in Lahj and Taiz provinces
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Local media sources revealed on Tuesday large military movements of al-Qaeda organization members in the areas separating restive Lahj
... a Yemeni governate located in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the stomping grounds on the southern secessionist al-Harak movement
and Taiz provinces, southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
These reinforcements come in conjunction with al-Qaeda’s announcement of the appointment of "Abu Ayoub al-Muhajir" as the new emir of the organization in Yemen, in light of the escalation of the terrorist organization’s activity in the areas under the control of the Saudi-led coalition factions.

The sources said that huge groups of the organization’s members arrived, during the past hours, to camps of the organization in areas near Bab al-Mandab, al-Madhariba and Ras al-Ara areas in Lahj, which are adjacent to the western Taiz countryside districts, coming from their areas in Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. province.

According to media sources, the new reinforcements will join previous groups that had arrived in the city of al-Turbah, where the leadership of the Islah Party forces is stationed.

This indicates intensive arrangements and joint coordination between the two parties for a decisive battle in the region against the pro-UAE factions.

Saudi Arabia sending new military shipments to Aden
[HODHODYEMENNEWS] Saudi forces landed during the early hours of Tuesday the shipments of weapons at Aden Airport, which is under the control of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia.

The leader in the "Southern Revolutionary Movement," Muhammad al-Na’mani, said that Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
sent military planes to Aden Airport, carrying various types of weapons and modern military equipment.

Al-Na’mani explained that the process of unloading weapons at the airport coincided with the arrival of new military forces to Aden from the eastern region of the city, amid intensive flying of drones in the sky of Aden city.

He said that the arrival of the forces to Aden came after the terrorist attacks on the STC militia in al-Mahfad district of Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
province, amid accusations to Saudi Arabia of being behind those attacks.

He pointed out that the STC had opened its former camps in Aden to prevent handing over the city of Aden to the forces loyal to Saudi Arabia.

This comes in the context of the tension between the STC militia and the Saudi forces, as the latter seeks to hand over the city of Aden to the forces led by the mercenary commander "Tariq Afash," according to statements by leaders affiliated with the STC.

Two TTP militants jailed for life in Landhi blast case
[Dawn] An antiterrorism court on Wednesday handed down life imprisonment to two forces of Evil of the outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
Pakistain (TTP) on charges of carrying out an improvised bomb (IED) blast near a Rangers office in Landhi.

Inamullah alias Mulla and Muhammad Shafiq were found guilty of killing two persons and wounding eight passers-by in the Khurramabad area on March 11, 2013 by detonating the IED.

They have already been sentenced to death by a military court in 2013 for carrying out the Abbas Town kaboom.

On Wednesday, the ATC-V judge, who conducted the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, pronounced his verdict reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge noted that the prosecution proved its case against the accused beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Besides life term, the court ordered the convicts to pay Rs200,000 as compensation to the legal heirs of the victims.

The judge also sentenced them to total 20-year-imprisonment for causing injuries to eight people and terrorism.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the court ruled that all the sentences would run concurrently.

The court kept the case against two absconding accused — Fareedullah alias Fareed and Zahidullah alias Zahid — on dormant file until their arrest or surrender.

In the verdict, the judge wrote that some mitigating circumstances did exist in this case, for which the accused could not be handed down capital punishment of death.

It stated that at the time of the commissioning of the offence as per the prosecution evidence and material available on record, both the accused were accompanied by their accomplices Zahid and Fareed, who had a remote control in their hands which the prosecution failed to recover from their possession. Therefore, the capital punishment cannot be given to them, the court ruled.

According to the prosecution, a CTD investigating officer on March 18, 2013 interrogated Inamullah and Muhammad Shafiq, who were already in jug in connection with two other kaboom cases. They disclosed to their involvement in the Rangers headquarters blast, it added.

Six officers killed in Pakistan Taliban ambush
[TRTWorld] Militants with automatic rifles attacked a police vehicle patrolling a village 100 kilometres from the Afghan border.

The Pak Taliban

have ambushed and killed all six people in a police vehicle in northwestern Pakistain, officials said.

Police officer Rab Nawaz Khan said on Wednesday that the morning attack in the Dadewala area of Lakki Marwat district came during a routine patrol in a suburban area.

The attackers launched an attack with automatic rifles around 7 am (0200 GMT) and escaped on cycle of violences.

Pak Taliban grabbed credit for the attack.

The forces of Evil had been involved in previous attacks on security forces.

Mohammad Khurasani, who said he is a spokesperson for the Pak Taliban, formally known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain or TTP, said in a statement that the patrol was ambushed on the way to a raid and the attackers acquired five police weapons from the confrontation.

Khan said reinforcement has reached the scene, moved the bodies to a hospital and started an investigation to find the perpetrators.

Israeli Arab teen indicted for affiliation with Islamic State, plans to make bombs
[IsraelTimes] 16-year-old from northern Israel charged with being in contact with jihadists over Telegram, who sent him instructions to build makeshift weapons

Prosecutors on Wednesday filed an indictment against an Arab teen from northern Israel over his alleged affiliation with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror group, the Justice Ministry said.

According to the charge sheet, over the past two years, the 16-year-old was in contact with several members of the jihadist group via the Telegram messaging application and other social media sites.

The indictment, citing the teen’s interrogation by the Shin Bet security agency, said in 2020 he was interested in swearing allegiance to IS and potentially joining its ranks abroad.

In 2021, the teen swore allegiance to the group, and continued being in contact with members, who provided him with instructions to build bombs and makeshift weapons, the indictment read.

The teen also attempted to convince several of his friends to join IS as well, however, they declined, according to the indictment.

As he is a minor, the suspect’s name and other identifying details, such as when he was arrested, were barred from publication.

The prosecution has asked to keep the suspect held until the end of legal proceedings.

Last month, six Arab men were arrested for alleged affiliation with IS and plans to commit terror attacks. The men, from Nazareth in northern Israel, were accused of planning to attack a Moslem school, a busy bus stop, a cop shoppe and a park where Jewish Israelis often visit.

In August, three Arab men were arrested for alleged affiliation with IS and plans to fight with the jihadist group in Africa. In April, another Arab teen was arrested for planning to join IS in Syria.

Earlier this year, Israeli authorities arrested dozens of alleged Islamic State members following two deadly terror attacks — in Hadera and Beersheba — by Arab Israelis thought to have been inspired by the jihadist group. Another deadly attack in Jerusalem in March was later revealed to have been committed by an Islamic State supporter, who also killed an elderly couple in the same area three years prior.

Israeli military post near Nablus comes under gunfire; no injuries — report
[IsraelTimes] Shots fired at IDF position near Mount Gerizim in the northern West Bank; incident comes hours after button men fire at Shaked settlement in area

An Israeli military post in the northern West Bank came under gunfire overnight Wednesday-Thursday, according to preliminary reports in the Hebrew-language media. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

There were no injuries in the attack, which took place at an Israel Defense Forces position at Mount Gerizim, a few kilometers south of the West Bank city of Nablus.

Israeli news site Walla reported additional gunfire incidents in the area but did not specify or source the information.

The reported shooting incident came hours after Paleostinian button men fired a hail of bullets at the settlement of Shaked, also in the northern West Bank, about 40 miles away from Nablus, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the military, slight damage was caused to a home on the settlement, located close to the security barrier, about 10 kilometers west of the Paleostinian city of Jenin.

There were no injuries in the attack. The settlement has been targeted several times in recent months.

The IDF said troops launched a manhunt for the suspects, who expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. The bullets — at least 39 rounds — were fired from outside the settlement.

In surveillance camera footage published by the Samaria Regional Council, heavy gunfire could be heard during the attack.

In recent months, Paleostinian button men have repeatedly targeted military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security barrier, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.

The number of shootings has decreased in recent weeks, following major gains by the IDF against the Nablus-based Lion’s Den terror group, which had grabbed credit for near-nightly shooting attacks.

The attacks came amid an Israeli anti-terror offensive mostly focused on the northern West Bank to deal with a series of Paleostinian attacks that have left 29 people in Israel and the West Bank dead since the start of the year.

The operation has netted more than 2,000 arrests in near-nightly raids, but has also left over 130 Paleostinians dead, many of them — but not all — while carrying out attacks or during festivities with security forces.

Thai authorities step up APEC security after Deep South bombings
[BenarNews] Updated at 12:17 p.m. ET on 2022-11-16

Authorities have stepped up security around the Bangkok venue of a leadership summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum following nighttime bomb and arson attacks in Thailand’s Deep South, officials said Wednesday.

The attacks on Tuesday night in Pattani and Yala provinces injured one person. On Wednesday night, a police officer was injured in another bombing in Pattani, officials said, while two pipe-bomb explosions were reported in neighboring Narathiwat, another of the provinces in Thailand’s troubled southern border region. No one was injured in the Narathiwat attacks.

In the Thai capital, as many as 50,000 security forces are being deployed around the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center and delegates’ accommodations, a security officer told BenarNews. The officer requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
a Defense Ministry front man said all security units should stay alert.

"Any violence in the Deep South or elsewhere ruins the image of the country and all Thai people," Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich told news hounds on Wednesday. "All intelligence and security units must stay alert and follow any trace of perpetrator groups in and outside of the areas."

Kongcheep’s comments followed a firekaboom at a gas station in Muang district of Pattani province late Tuesday that injured one civilian. At least two other bomb and arson attacks took place around the same time elsewhere in Pattani and in Yala province. No one was hurt.

Previously, a soldier and a civilian were killed and three people were maimed in two separate attacks on Sunday in Narathiwat.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

The Moslem-majority, Malay-speaking Deep South is the scene of a long-running, separatist insurgency.

While the violence is generally confined to the four provinces in that region, it has occasionally strayed outside of the Deep South.

In August 2019, the Barisan Revolusi Nasional, the main krazed killer group, was blamed for a series of small bombings in Bangkok during a ministerial meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. At least seven people were maimed.

Police arrested two suspects from the Deep South and issued warrants for four others. The BRN denied involvement.

This week’s APEC meetings include ministerial-level talks on Thursday before a leadership summit on Friday and Saturday. Top leaders or deputies from 19 countries along with Taiwan and Hong Kong are expected to attend.

Among the attendees will be Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will hold a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha. The United States will be represented by Vice President Kámala Harris

Iran issues new death sentence as protests enter third month
[Rudaw] Iran
...The nation is noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence...
issued a second death sentence
...the barbaric practice of sentencing a murderer to be punished for as long as his/her/its victim is dead...
in three days and festivities killed at least six people as women-led protests over Mahsa Amini's death in jug entered a third month Wednesday.

Street violence raged across Iran overnight as protests sparked by the September 16 death of Amini intensified on the anniversary of a lethal 2019 crackdown.

Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, died in the custody of the notorious morality police after her arrest for an alleged breach of Iran's strict dress code for women.

"We'll fight! We'll die! We'll take back Iran!" dozens of protesters could be heard chanting around a bonfire on a Tehran street overnight, in a video published by the 1500tasvir social media monitor.

In widely shared video verified by AFP, security forces appear to open fire on dozens of commuters at a Tehran metro station, causing them to scramble and fall over each other on the platform.

Organisers of the protests have called for three days of actions to commemorate hundreds killed in the "Bloody Aban" -- or Bloody November -- demonstrations that erupted on November 15, 2019 after a shock decision to hike fuel prices.

Bazaar shops were shuttered and students boycotted class before people hit the streets after dark, chanting anti-government slogans and braving tear gas, according to videos posted online.

But the 1500tasvir monitor said families of those killed in the 2019 crackdown "were forced to cancel the ceremonies" as a result of "the Islamic republic's threats and pressure".

- 'GUARDS KILLED' -
The Iranian authorities have struggled to contain the protests, which have seen women remove and burn their headscarves and face off with the security forces on the street.

State media said "rioters" -- a term used by officials to describe protesters -- killed two members of the Revolutionary Guards and a member of its Basij paramilitary force on Tuesday.
"WE know where you live"
Guards Colonel Reza Almasi was rubbed out in Bukan, a city in Amini's home province of Kurdistan, and another Guards member, Reza Azabar, was shot full of holes in Kamyaran, a Kurish majority city in West Azerbaijan province, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The Basij member died after being hit by a Molotov cocktail in the southern city of Shiraz, it added.

Three protesters have been killed, two in Sanandaj and one in Kamyaran by direct fire from government forces, Oslo-based rights group Hengaw said.

The unrest was fanned by fury over the dress rules for women, but has grown into a broad movement against the theocracy that has ruled Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

It has shown no sign of abating despite the authorities' use of lethal force and a campaign of mass arrests that has snared activist muppets, journalists and lawyers.

Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights said on Saturday that security forces had killed at least 326 people, including 43 children and 25 women, in the crackdown on the Amini protests.

IHR said at least 15,000 people have been arrested -- a figure the Iranian authorities deny.

- FEAR OF MASS EXECUTIONS -
The judiciary said a revolutionary court on Tuesday handed down the second death sentence over the "riots" that have rocked the country since Amini's death.

The unnamed defendant was accused of "terrorising people in the street using a bladed weapon, setting fire to the cycle of violence of a citizen, and attacking a person with a knife", its Mizan Online website reported.
He was also a protester?
It came three days after a court issued the first death sentence in connection with the protest movement that has shaken the Islamic republic's holy manal leadership.

Five others have been sentenced to prison terms of between five and 10 years for "gathering and conspiring to commit crimes against national security and disturbing public order", Mizan said.

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said the second death sentence was expected and that more are likely to be announced "one by one to minimise the reactions".

"We strongly condemn the death sentences issued by the Islamic republic judiciary, which is part of the oppressive regime and not an independent judicial system," he told AFP.

"Protesters don't have access to lawyers in the interrogation phase, they are subjected to physical and mental torture to give false confessions and sentenced based on the confessions by the revolutionary courts.

Turkey arrests an Istanbul explosion suspect in Syria
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish authorities on Wednesday arrested a man in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
-controlled city of Azaz in northwest Syria for allegedly helping the main suspect of the recent deadly blast in Istanbul, reported state media.

A TNT explosion killed six people and injured 81 others in Istanbul’s famous Taksim thoroughfare on Sunday. Police have arrested about 50 people at home, including a 23-year-old Syrian woman named Ahlam Albashir whom the police believes is the main perpetrator of the earth-shattering kaboom.

Ottoman Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency reported late Wednesday that Ottoman Turkish forces have arrested a man, codenamed Husam, in Azaz city which is controlled by Ankara and its Syrian proxies. He is believed to have helped Albashir in carrying out the attack.

Ottoman Turkish authorities have blamed the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) which controls northeast Syria (Rojava) for the earth-shattering kaboom but the group has denied any responsibility.

The state media claimed that Husam is a member of the YPG and moved from Syria to Istanbul one year ago, adding that he managed to flee Turkey while police were chasing him.

Five killed in shootout at market in Iran
[REGNUM] At least five people were killed in an armed attack on a market in the city of Ize in southwestern Iran.
That’s in Khuzestan Governorate, for those looking on a map.
This was reported by Tasnim agency.

According to him, on the evening of November 16, armed men on two motorcycles opened fire on visitors to the market, and police officers and Iranian security forces began firing back. Three young men, a nine-year-old girl and a 45-year-old woman were killed in the shootout. Ten people were also injured, some of them in critical condition.

Police are treating the attack as a terrorist attack. Currently, Iranian security forces are trying to identify the attackers and find them. It is noted that order in the city has already been restored.
Al Ahram spelt the city name as Izleh, adding:
State TV said that groups of several dozens of protesters had gathered in different parts of Izeh late Wednesday, chanting anti-government slogans and hurling rocks at police, who fired tear gas to disperse them.

The violence in Izeh tokk place on the second day of a three-day general strike called by the protesters. The strike commemorates an earlier round of nationwide protests in 2019 in which hundreds of protesters were killed.

Iranian officials have blamed the unrest on hostile foreign actors without providing evidence. The protesters say they are fed up after decades of repression by a holy manal establishment that they view as corrupt and authoritarian.

Activists say at least 344 people have been killed and 15,820 arrested in the latest wave of protests. Rights groups accuse security forces of firing live ammunition and bird shot at demonstrators, and of beating them with batons.

Iran's Revolutionary Court, which tries security cases, issued a preliminary verdict sentencing three protesters to death in the capital, Tehran, earlier on Wednesday, state media reported.

Mizan, a news website linked to Iran's judiciary, did not identify the accused but said one of them had allegedly rammed a vehicle into police, killing one and wounding others.

It said another was accused of attacking security forces with a knife and setting fire to a government building. The third individual was accused of blocking a street and leading a violent mostly peaceful demonstration. Mizan said the verdicts can be appealed.
