Public Schools "Safe Passage" routes Monday morning as a 28-year-old man was shot along one of the routes and a 14-year-old was shot to death near another one, the day before school starts. Other than that, they're working fine.
The 28-year-old man was shot about 11:35 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of South Tripp Avenue in the North Lawndale neighborhood, police said. The block is along the route to Hughes Elementary. See? Just coincidence. He wasn't in elementary school.
The man was walking when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was shot in the neck and suffered a graze wound to the back. He was listed in guarded condition early Monday at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The 14-year-old boy was shot and killed within a block of a welcoming school, Melody Elementary, 3937 W. Wilcox.
About 12:20 a.m. Sunday, the boy, Lavander Hearnes, was standing outside in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street with several other people when he was shot, authorities said.
He was later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 9:04 a.m. Sunday, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Thousands of children will walk unfamiliar sidewalks to newly assigned schools in the wake of massive school closings.
Despite the violence happening along or near those two Safe Route passages, and two others in recent weeks, school officials sought to assure parents they were prepared for their children.
"We're ready," said Alice Henry, principal of Johnson School of Excellence in North Lawndale, which is welcoming about 60 students from the now-shuttered Pope Elementary. "We're in good shape and I'm confident this is going to be a smooth transition."
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett, who've been navigating the rocky aftermath of closing 47 elementary schools this year, also insist the program is ready. Emanuel has declared it an "all-hands-on-deck" scenario in which every adult in Chicago -- especially city workers -- should lend a hand.

It seems that "Safe Passage routes" are a myth in Chicago. It turns out that 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton who had attended the BHO inauguration and was shot and killed earlier this year was the result of two warring rival drug gangs connected to the Mexican drug cartel. But rather than address the issue of gang violence, Chicago (along with Obama) will continue to blame the violence on the gun and call for increased gun control.

[NY Times] Some of the early shots in the Republican primary battle against Senator Lindsey Graham ... the endangered South Carolina RINO... have been fired from this tiny community on the northern border of the state where the Civil War began.
A small group called Carolina Conservatives United, one of dozens organized loosely under the flag of limited government, low taxes and strict adherence to the Constitution, sent out images last week of a milk carton bearing Mr. Graham's face and asked Gov. Nikki R. Haley to issue the state's version of an Amber Alert to find its missing senator.
"Lindsey Graham has not been seen in the state of South Carolina for most of the last two years," said Bruce Carroll, the chairman of the group.
Conservatives in South Carolina are eager to oust Mr. Graham, who has enraged the far right for, among other things, reaching across the aisle on immigration and supporting President B.O.'s nominations for the Supreme Court. Tea Party supporters called him a community organizer for the Moslem Brüderbund when, instead of heading home for the Congressional break this month, he went to Egypt at the request of the president.
But to stand a chance against the politician who succeeded Strom Thurmond in 2003, conservatives will have to win a civil war of their own. At least 40 groups align themselves along Tea Party and Libertarian lines, and trying to unify them to topple the state's senior senator will be no easy task.
So far, three people have stepped forward to challenge Mr. Graham in the June primary: State Senator Lee Bright; Richard Cash, a former Congressional candidate; and Nancy Mace, the first woman to graduate from the Citadel and, at the moment, the challenger whose political star is rising the fastest.

Wish we could get one of our young competent conservatives to run against ageing Pat Roberts here in Kansas. Roberts is conservative, but he is old and entrenched and we need someone to shake the trees.
1. Finish 2nd - that is, beat everyone except the incumbent.
2. Keep the incumbent below 50%, forcing a run-off.
3. Unite all the former challengers against the incumbent - some of whom can be used as attack dogs on the incumbent without neccesarily linking the mud flinging back to the challenger.
4. Win the Runoff.
Its how we got Ted Cruz against the establishment GOP down in Texas. And its pretty much how Rubio did a lot of his stuff too - be the one the challengers unite behind after the initial primary.
I believe that Little Lord Fauntleroy can be held below 50%, and once that's done, the blood is in the water. Nikki Haley may then come out for the challenger in the 1 on 1 runoff.
