Putin Wants Alaska Back. Also, People In Hell Want Icewater
[Battleswarmblog] “I’ll take Absurd News for $200.”

Russia laid the groundwork for expanding its soft power across North America and Asia with a new executive order signed by Vladimir Putin last week.

The new order provides funds for the search, registration and legal protection of Russian properties abroad, including land and buildings located on the territory of the former Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.

Among the areas affected by the new decree is Alaska, which was sold to the United States in 1867 and still has communities with close ties to Russia.

Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and large parts of Asia were once part of the former empire.

However, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that “it is not clear what Russia’s current or historical assets consist of.”

... Still, the “just wants to watch the world burn” part of me wants to see Pooty-Poot’s Russia try to conquer Alaska, if only because the American reaction to whatever half-assed misexpedition across the Bearing Strait Russia is able to launch might result in the complete seizure of the Kuril-Aleut oil fields in far eastern Siberia. Indeed, I imagine that it wouldn’t even be a week before American air power completely wrecked the fragile Transiberian Railway and Highway, making Russian forces in the far east completely SOL. At that point, an American air and sea bridge from Alaska would still provide more reliable logistical support than Russia’s long, primitive and fragile Transiberian transport network.

This is CIA-sourced fake news. The Putin XO is not yet posted on the official President of Russia site, but it has been covered on TASS:

http://en.kremlin.ru/acts/news
https://tass.com/russia/1734479

The “Department of Foreign Property of the Administrative Directorate of the President of the Russian Federation” is their equivalent of the U.S. GSA’s real estate operation:

#8  So the Russian equivalent of the GSA is taking inventory - maybe not a bad idea with all the chatter about seizing Russian assets abroad - and that gets turned into Putin wants Alaska back. Sure, whatever.

The first question to ask is Why? Russian is currently busy frying some bigger existential fish, but it never hurts to whip up a little hysteria, right? The second question is How? Look at a map before you answer.

The 23rd month of the war. Offensive defensive
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[LB] If you carefully read the summaries of our General Administration, you can see reports of "positional battles" in all directions every day. Among the reasons is the weather. And also the lack of resources on both sides for a decisive offensive with at least limited objectives. Moreover, the Russians, throwing into the crucible of battles everything they have at hand, are not able, even hypothetically achieving tactical success in any direction, to develop it into an operational one. There is simply nothing to develop. But this fact is not a reason to relax.

by Viktor Kevlyuk

Three hot shops today, where the enemy's attempts to consistently and persistently create some kind of victory are being followed, are Synkivka in the Kharkiv region, Avdiyivka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region.

The hot spot is the section Robotyne — Verbove, where the enemy, with the forces of two amphibious assault divisions, the 7th and 76th, has been trying to eliminate our bridgehead for the last three months, formed by the incredible efforts of brigades from the operational-strategic group of troops "Tavria" last summer. And the enemy is doing it slowly, but it succeeds: the defense forces hold about two kilometers along the first position of the enemy's defensive line. It's sad, but it is what it is.

Krynyk remains the epicenter of the battles on the left bank of the Kherson region, where our marines - real titans - write the history of the Marine Corps of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in blood. Mostly hostile. The 70th division of the Russians with the forces of the 70th motorized rifle regiment, with the support of one or the other, is trying to retake Krynky, but every time something does not go according to plan. Colossal losses of people, armored vehicles. A couple of weeks ago, the enemy had to conduct an entire operation to evacuate damaged tanks and BMPs from the battlefield and its surroundings. Such activity is an obvious sign of a lack of combat vehicles for further attacks.

It is not easy for us there either: the Dnipro and the straits are frozen, delivering anything and taking away the wounded is an extremely difficult task. All the more — to expand the bridgehead. And this should be done in order to drive away the enemy who wants to shoot at peaceful towns and villages on the right bank. The downing of several enemy bombers and even an entire A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft, the destruction of the IL-22 air command post significantly eases the life of the defenders of the bridgehead and everyone on the right bank.

Let's go back to hot shops.

Sinkivka. The key to Kupyansk. The enemy really needs to get to the eastern bank of the Oskil River. Fighting continues on the outskirts of Synkivka, where the enemy's 25th brigade is clinging to every groove in order to crawl into Kharkiv region. Last week, the enemy on the north-eastern outskirts of the village won back 200 m of positions that they lost the week before last. Other points of tension are Kislivka and Petropavlivka, where fierce clashes are taking place over forest strips. The picture is as follows: the enemy rushes to Kupyansk along the roads Liman First — Kupyansk and Svatove — Kupyansk, and in parallel plans to reach Oskil on the section from Dvorichna to Synkivka. The enemy's 15th motorized rifle and 26th tank regiments operate in the directions Yagidne — Ivanivka and Yagidne — Kislivka. The enemy's 27th brigade, which wants to bypass Stelmakhivka from the north, is trying to support these efforts. Nothing good can come of this, so everything is as Comrade Zhukov commanded: more people are needed. The brigade was reinforced by the 1431st regiment of territorial troops and assault groups of the 7th motorized rifle regiment of the 11th corps of the Baltic Fleet. From the point of view of military science, it all looks wild: a brigade reinforced by a regiment? Is the regiment advancing in the brigade's advance lane? Who manages whom? How do they interact? Was the regiment simply distributed to replace the losses of the brigade? Addicts, in one word. Call the police.

The defense forces hold several convenient positions to the east of Sinkivka and from there put an end to any attempts by the enemy to move west with any significant forces.

Cool shower. Is Ukraine transitioning to active strategic defense?
Avdievka. Just hell. A parody of the elections in Russia — March 17, that's why the army set the task of capturing Avdiivka by March 1, at the very least by March 10. That's why the strain of forces and resources. The ground sometimes freezes, then thaws, the weather is mostly not suitable for flying (a friend said that in a month he raised the H10 Poseidon UAV into the air only four times - the clouds are too low. The basis of operations in the air is on maviks and fpv. The enemy’s plan is to surround the garrison of the Forces defenses in Avdiivka, so he is trying to break through from the north through Stepovy to Orlivka and there from the south from Vodyanyi through Severny and Tonenka. The intensity of the assaults increases every week, but the brigades of the "Tavria" group stand firm, in Stepovy they even drove the enemy to the eastern outskirts. And he was surprised by such a turn, only on January 19 he attacked 10 times, but on the morning of January 20, everything burned down on the same outskirts of Stepovoy, although he advanced 100 m south of the village.

Some enemy commander had an epiphany, and he or they decided not to attack the Koksochim head-on, but to bypass him. Thus, the 114th Donetsk brigade tried to attack, advancing from the direction of Veseli and Kamianka. I don't know what they have with navigation, but somehow the brigade headquarters did not notice on the map the ponds that had to be bypassed, dividing the forces in half. It is clear that it is easier to hit the enemy successively than at the same time, and "Tavria" did not lose this opportunity. In addition, the Defense Forces hold positions near the sand pit, which contributes to the defense of the coxsack. Ours destroyed the attempts of the 30th brigade of the Russians to reach this line and thus secure the left flank of the 114th. As they say: here you go! The result — the enemy didn't succeed, a pile of burned equipment, a lot of Russians lying on the field between the ponds and near the quarry. The tension of the battles is illustrated by the video of our 47th brigade, which recorded how the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle dismantled the enemy T-90 in a completely gentlemanly duel, of course, the newest and analog-fired.

Not everything is so fluffy in other areas of the Avdiyiv Defense District. Small groups of the enemy's infantry have slightly advanced into the residential sector in the eastern part of the city.

Novomykhailivka. The enemy is advancing to the highway Maryinka — Vugledar. and "Tavria" cannot stop him yet. Only holds back promotion. The intention of the Russians was to advance along the Mar'inka-Vugledar road to get behind the 72nd Brigade of the Defense Forces at the Vugledar bridgehead and eliminate this salient. The enemy's actions show that it is unprincipled for him to surround someone on the bridgehead, cut him open with a frontal blow, or in any way force the black Zaporozhians to retreat from their positions. The enemy is muddled by the bridgehead itself, which is convenient for further actions in the direction of Volnovakha and Mariupol.

In order to implement this plan, the Russian command in the Maryinka area began to regroup forces: the 103rd regiment of the 150th division of the enemy's 8th army is now operating in the Maryinka-Pobyeda direction, and the reinforced battalion of the 155th brigade of marine infantry of the Pacific fleet, units of the 39th brigade, which are also operating from the direction of Sweetkoy, stretched in the direction of Slavne — Novomykhailivka. Now the Defense Forces are holding Novomykhailivka, destroying attempts to capture the settlement and stubbornly resisting the enemy's attempts to advance our troops in the direction of Kostyantynivka.

It should be expected that the enemy will concentrate its efforts north of Novomykhailivka and attack in the direction of Antonivka and Kostyantynivka through the village of Pobeda, pinning our forces in Novomykhailivka with frontal attacks. But if the enemy's 57th brigade looms in the Vugledar area, then this will become an indicator of the "complexity" of solving the problem of the Vugledar salient: except for a frontal attack to cut the battle formations of the "Tavria" near Vugledar, there is nothing for it to do there.

The Russians stirred up in the Lyman direction, but it is too early to say anything here, let's wait a bit.

If we look at these events from a strategic level, the conclusion is as follows: the enemy has the initiative and determines the place, pace and scale of its operations. This fits into the vision of "active strategic defense" announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Although the strategy has a rather conservative look, there is no other way to form the necessary reserves, train them and comprehensively provide them. Only in this way can the system of rotations at the front be restored and the troops rest. I would like it to happen in half a year, but the reality is harsher. Probably a year.

Our partners' doctrine defines active defense as "the use of limited offensive actions and counterattacks to block contested territory or enemy positions." Therefore, the Defense Forces will spend this year not only in the trenches. An important aspect of ensuring active defense is the availability of offensive capabilities. And such actions are possible along the entire front line, and the places of their implementation will be determined by the places of concentration of these possibilities. In the absence of the latter, counterattacks will only deplete our already limited resources.

The former Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Andriy Zahorodnyuk, put it well in his interview with the Financial Times : "Focusing on defense without any offensive component would be a mistake of historic proportions for Ukraine." The mistake of our General Assembly will show the world Ukraine's inability to win the war.

The strategic pause taken by the Defense Forces automatically gives the enemy time and opportunities to bring themselves to a combat-ready state, to deploy operational and strategic reserves, for which Ukraine will later have to pay in blood, tears and destruction. In order to minimize this negativity, it is worth deploying a support operation, within the framework of which strikes the enemy's infrastructure, logistics, and in the strategic and operational depth of its territory. At the same time, the enemy will take similar measures against our state, affecting in every possible way the components of our defense potential, necessary for a strategic offensive.

And about partners: US President Joe Biden, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Director of National Intelligence Avril Gaines met with US lawmakers on January 17 and urged them to support additional security assistance to Ukraine. They stated that air defense systems and artillery ammunition are key needs, and these stocks may be depleted without additional US assistance, which would deprive Ukraine of the ability to launch long-range strikes on occupied Crimea and the aggressor's Black Sea fleet. It is impossible to allow even a short-term pause in supplies, because it gives Russia a chance to resume the pace of accumulation of weapons produced in the swamps, as well as Iran and North Korea.

And about the sad thing: according to the intelligence estimates of our partners, the war will last at least two years, and according to completely pessimistic estimates - up to five years.

Russian Army on the streets of Avdievka: the situation in the city
Direct Translation via Google Trandlate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] THE SITUATION IN AVDIEVKA IS DIFFICULT

From approximately January 19 to 21, Russian infantry advanced in many places in the south of Avdievka. There is information about battles on the streets of Sobornaya, Chernyshevsky, and Sportivnaya.

The Russian army has a certain advance within Avdeevka, Donetsk region. Hot battles are taking place in the area of the Tsarskaya Okhota restaurant, as well as on Sobornaya, Chernyshevsky, and Sportivnaya streets. There is information that some of the Ukrainian fighters were surrounded. Now there is an operation to release our soldiers.

GRADUAL ADVANCE
The American Institute for the Study of War recorded the advance of the invaders through the streets of Avdievka on January 21. In particular, ISW experts named three streets on the outskirts of the city where it is possible for the occupiers’ units to advance – these are Sobornaya, Chernyshevsky and Sportivnaya, as well as the area of the Tsarskaya Okhota restaurant. Let us note that the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine does not confirm this information.

Military analyst Bogdan Miroshnikov stated on the night of January 22 that the second phase of the enemy’s massive offensive had begun during this autumn-winter campaign. According to him, in the private sector in the south of Avdeevka, battles continue “for every street, every house, every barn.” The occupiers are minimal, but they have advanced.

Already in the evening, the expert added: “In the south of the city in the private sector on the side of the industrial hub and north of the Tsarskaya Hunt, swamp scum have had success.”

FIGHTS ON THE CITY STREETS
The fact that the Russian army is already moving through the streets and trying to enter Avdeevka was confirmed by Defense Express director Sergei Zgurets. According to him, in the last two days the enemy was able to squeeze through the defenses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

By the red arrows marked on the map, you can see exactly where the occupiers are trying to get into Avdiivka, he pointed out. Now the advance of Russians is recorded along several streets, starting from the Yasinovatskaya interchange and the industrial area.

According to Zgurets, the situation is extremely difficult. While the Defense Forces are trying to block enemy actions as much as possible, there are a lot of occupiers around the city. This complicates things, the analyst adds.

The expert hopes that the Ukrainian army will be able to take certain countermeasures to completely prevent Russia from entering the city.

NEW TACTICS
The Telegram channel Operative Inform, with reference to Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters, reported that in the south of Avdiivka, the occupiers used new tactics for the first time. Thus, in the area west of the Yasinovatskaya interchange, the enemy found a pipe with a diameter of up to 0.8 meters, which had a length of more than two kilometers. Through this pipe, approximately 150 Russian attack aircraft reached the rear of our forward positions north of the Tsarskaya Okhota restaurant.

“On the streets of Sobornaya, Chernyshevsky, Sportivnaya, heavy battles continue for the maintenance of the private sector and in order to release our encircled soldiers. It is necessary to more closely study the area of the task in order to identify threatening directions, both at the front and in the rear,” - the message says.

Please note that there is no official confirmation of this information.

REASSURANCE FROM BARABASHA
At the same time, the head of the Avdeevka city military administration, Vitaly Barabash, confirmed that Russian units had indeed broken through on the outskirts of the city, but reassured that the enemy was not able to “get hooked” and carry out fortification work.

In particular, answering the question whether the Russians were able to “catch on to the houses on the outskirts,” he said: “The DRG came in and got hooked - these are different things. This is a very loud statement. To get hooked means to carry out some kind of strengthening work and so on.” further. There’s definitely no such thing, our guys work there and they work very successfully. That’s why no one got caught anywhere.”

At the same time, according to him, the situation with the defense of Avdiivka remains difficult. Over the past 24 hours, 37 massive shellings took place in the community alone; the Russian army carried out 12 air bomb strikes, most of which hit the central part of the city.

“The situation is very complicated. Not easy. But it’s impossible to say that everything is lost. The guys are holding back the invasion that is rushing from the south, north and from Yasinovataya, they are very actively trying to attack. But the guys are repelling these attacks,” Barabash noted on air in Suspilne. Opposite.

According to him, massive shelling mainly takes place during the day. Russia continues to strike the city of Kabamy - 20-30 strikes are recorded every day. He recalled that over the past year, 146 guided aerial bombs “flew” around the city; to date, according to his data, more than 300 have been recorded.

“This activity has been happening since the beginning of the year, even since the 20th of December, Russian troops have been actively operating in the city with aviation. Basically, about 90% of the air traffic strikes hit administrative buildings and multi-storey buildings,” added the head of the Avdeevka administration.

#1  When I was reading a similar article, the author used the russian words for walking around. I might be lost in translation, but i think the authors choice of verb was purposeful, and indicates...

#2  Word is that a Russian Army unit located and used a tunnel in Avdievka to maneuver its forces to the rear of the Ukrainian deployment.

The new world will have to create new laws of war
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Vadim Bondar

[REGNUM] On Sunday morning, January 21, the Ukrainian Armed Forces shelled the Kirovsky district of Donetsk, and more precisely, the market in the Tekstilshchik microdistrict. According to the latest data, 27 people were killed and 25 were injured, including two teenagers. The blow was purely political in nature. What is the goal?

If Russia takes this to heart and strikes back, it will be possible to make a worldwide noise about the war crimes of the “Putin regime.” If he doesn’t answer, again make a noise that all the goals announced by the Russian authorities, in particular the protection of the residents of Donbass, are nothing more than propaganda. People in Donetsk are killed with enviable regularity, and Russia does not protect them or avenge them. On the eve of the Russian presidential elections, such dirty, bloody technologies are being used.

But the main thing here is not even them, but the fact that this shelling was another act of war crimes, of which Ukraine has already committed countless numbers in this conflict, from torture and execution of prisoners of war on camera to covering military facilities with a “human shield” of its citizens. And the Ukrainian side gets away with it all. But dramatizations like Buchi are instantly loudly promoted, like the “bloody crimes of the Syrian regime” at the instigation of the White Helmets.

All this literally puts the question squarely: international approaches and legislation on war crimes, norms and laws of warfare need to be reviewed and changed, since the world has already entered an era of deep transformations and the breakdown of the previous model of world order.

According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), last year was a 30-year record for the number of conflicts active in the world. As researchers write, in 2023, 183 regional conflicts raged in the world. The authors of the analysis took into account only regional confrontations, without taking into account the confrontation of countries such as the USA, Russia and China. In addition to quantity, qualitative indicators of conflict potential are also growing. The IISS notes that the intensity and number of victims of armed struggle are growing year by year, and “intractability is a defining feature of the modern global conflict landscape.”

Global and regional players are still trying by any means, including military, to strengthen their positions before the inevitable large international negotiation process to develop a new world order and determine the rules of the game in it. As history shows, a global restructuring of the world order was always preceded by a big war, after which the winners determined the rules of life for everyone else. This was the case after the First and Second World Wars, and this was the case after the end of the Cold War and the establishment of a unipolar model of world order.

Today, this model is being dismantled through an undeclared fourth world war actually going on in the world in the form of large-scale, high-intensity proxy conflicts dispersed in space. These are not regional conflicts, as it seems at first glance, but rather parts of a single process of armed confrontation, pursuing one goal - the dismantling of the existing system, the rules of relationships and the statuses of the players.

During this war, many new trends and practices are being tested. In 2018, the Joint Center for Artificial Intelligence of the Department of Defense was created in the United States. Its commander, Lieutenant General Michael Grun, says: “ With the right efforts made today to implement artificial intelligence, we will find that we will be able to operate with unprecedented efficiency and impact in the future.”

Everyone is now chasing “unprecedented effectiveness” in trying to impose their will on the enemy. The search for this efficiency is carried out in a variety of different, including completely new, directions: from the creation of low-power nuclear weapons with low background radiation to the formation of proxy armies and groups of combat autonomous systems in all environments. While regarding the nuclear component there is an understanding of how to classify and regulate all this at the international legal level, in other areas there is no such understanding yet. Therefore, the question of new laws and customs of warfare is becoming more and more pressing.

The old ones generally took shape in Europe by the second half of the 17th century. A division was established into combatants (warriors) and non-combatants (ordinary people). The former should, if possible, spare the latter, and the latter should go about their business without interfering in the confrontation between the warring armies. And it doesn’t matter whose. This was considered a civilized norm of warfare.

These laws and customs did not apply to the “uncivilized”. Wars against them were called colonial or "civilization" wars. It was possible to behave with barbarians as if hunting, because the laws of the human world do not apply to “animals”. To see what this meant in practice, just look at the photographs from the early 20th century from the zoo in Coney Island, America. For example, one of them shows a frightened little girl from the Philippines who was placed among monkeys and lizards. The baby was tied with ropes, and visitors threw peanuts at her. There is also more recent evidence. For example, from the Vietnam War, where an American infantry fighting vehicle drags the body of a local resident along the ground. This is how cowboys once dragged the bodies of Indians behind their horses.

“Civilized peoples” practiced similar treatment towards our country. After the creation of the USSR, our country began to be treated entirely as a “native empire,” and during the Second World War, genuine genocide was practiced against our prisoners of war. The Geneva Convention, which regulates the humane treatment of prisoners, did not apply in practice to Soviet soldiers and officers. How else can we explain the fact that in the camps of the “bloody Bolshevik regime”, which did not sign it, 14.9% of all military personnel caught in Soviet captivity died, and in the camps of the builders of the new order of Europe, who signed the above convention, 58% of those captured captured by the Red Army, 2.6% by the French and 4% by the Americans and British. In the same regard, it is worth looking for an answer to the question about the monstrous losses of the USSR among the civilian population.

The same approach is being practiced towards us in a poorly hidden way even now. Just look at the OSCE resolution of 2013, which calls the Holocaust a unique phenomenon and does not say a word about the genocide of the peoples of the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

“Civilized” peoples continue to demonstrate similar attitudes around the world. Now it is covered by the so-called international humanitarian law, according to which you will be bombed for your own good, which, due to some backwardness and inferiority, you are not able to understand. The main unspoken principle still remains the thesis “the war that we wage is just, the war that is waged against us is unjust.” It underlies the campaigns of ideological and PR support for all military actions that continue to be carried out by the United States and its satellites.

But the time of such laws and rules of warfare is gradually becoming a thing of the past. The unipolar world is bursting at the seams, and at its end, the inferiority of previous approaches becomes clearest. For example, Israeli journalist Simon Riklin says live on local television that he is “FOR” war crimes in the Gaza Strip and that he does not care about criticism. At the same time, those present laugh together. He says: “When I see the destruction of houses in Gaza, I want there to be more. So that they have nothing left that they can revive later."

But this cannot continue, and more and more people in different countries understand this. The most diverse tools, techniques and methods of war are rapidly changing, but the laws and rules are not. Therefore, all sorts of surrogates are used in the form of some local agreements on what is permissible and in relation to whom, and what is absolutely not allowed, who can be brought to trial for old-style war crimes and who cannot, and so on. This applies to various aspects of armed confrontation. This practice takes place in various points of armed struggle on the planet, both with the participation of our country and with the participation of Americans.

For the transition period, this is generally normal, since the old norms and rules are less and less valid, and there are no new ones yet. Those who make decisions understand this. The public is not always there.

'Serpent Gorynych' versus 'dragon’s teeth'. Will new lines of defense help the Ukrainian Armed Forces?
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Artemy Sharapov

[REGNUM] Kiev is concerned about the successes of Russian troops in the Donetsk direction and is preparing troops for the decisive battle for Donbass. Apparently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are planning to use the tactics of Russian troops and create defensive lines on the most threatened sections of the front, and in the future - along all the northern and eastern borders of the country. This conclusion was reached by experts interviewed by the British The Telegraph.

Both Western and Ukrainian analysts previously pointed out that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are not considering plans for a new “counter-offensive” and are preparing to switch to a blind defense. Now the London publication has reported where exactly (according to its information) the Ukrainian command plans to build its analogue of the Russian defensive “Surovikin Line” (unofficially named after Army General Sergei Surovikin, the former commander and deputy commander of the joint group in the Northern Military District zone).

DRAGON SHOWS TEETH
The defensive lines being built run at a distance of 10 to 50 km from the existing front line, The Telegraph sources claim. In some directions, several lines are created at once, passing at a distance of 10 km from each other, in others - only one.

For example, in the Zaporozhye sector of the front, the Armed Forces of Ukraine limited themselves to the construction of just one defensive line and the construction of individual structures on the outskirts of the city of Zaporozhye.

Many Ukrainian unofficial sources also report the creation of defensive lines. Footage is published on the Internet showing the digging of trenches, the construction of concrete long-term firing points, the installation of so-called “dragon teeth” (pyramidal anti-tank gouges) and barbed wire fences.

The main emphasis is on transforming the territory of the DPR remaining under the control of Kyiv into one “impregnable fortress” based on large settlements, industrial zones and natural barriers. Many write that the current front line will have to be abandoned in order to retreat to new frontiers.

The possibility of retreat from Donetsk was admitted by the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and a number of other officials.

WHERE WILL THE LINE BE DRAWN?
The configuration of the defensive lines allows us to draw a conclusion about which areas of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be ready to leave in the foreseeable future, explains military expert Alexander Mikhailovsky to Regnum news agency.

In the Donetsk direction, Ukrainian troops most likely plan to withdraw from the outskirts of Donetsk, leaving their previous defense centers: Avdeevka, Krasnogorovka and a number of other settlements from which Ukrainian troops are shelling the capital of the DPR.

Organizationally, the “fortress” is divided into two large centers of defense on the territory of the DPR: the northern one with the center in the city of Slavyansk and the southern one around Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk in Ukrainian terminology).

The northern section is designed to slow down the Russian offensive from Artyomovsk, and the southern section from Donetsk: from Avdeevka in the north and Maryinka, east of the DPR capital.

The new defensive line will rely on water barriers: the Volchya River, Karlovskoye and Kurakhovskoye reservoirs.

In the Artyomovsk direction, the enemy is considering the possibility of withdrawing from the city of Chasova Yar with the preparation of a defensive hub in the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk-Druzhkovka agglomeration.

This approach to defense planning is caused by a number of circumstances, primarily the exhaustion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ previous defensive tactics, Mikhailovsky explained.

EQUAL TO "SIEGFRIED"
“Previously, they relied on “fortress cities,” like the Wehrmacht in the second half of the Great Patriotic War. Mariupol, Severodonetsk, Artyomovsk (“Bakhmut Fort”), Avdeevka - all these are such fortresses. The tactic has objectively exhausted itself, because, in fact, it did not work anywhere. This means we need to change the concept,” explains Mikhailovsky.

The 2023 campaign showed: Russian troops more often seek to encircle the defense centers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, cut them off from supplies further, or force the enemy to retreat or “crush” him while surrounded. The construction of a continuous line is precisely intended to protect the flanks of the main defense units.

If the defense line is broken through in one place, this may subsequently lead to the complete surrender of defensive positions, the collapse of the front line and further retreat.

Many similar lines have faced the same problems, from the Maginot Line and Siegfried Line of World War II to the Bar-Lev Line (which Israel built in the late 1960s along the eastern bank of the Suez Canal) and the Bagramyan Line in Nagorno-Karabakh. Karabakh.

A classic example: the breakthrough of the Bar-Lev Line at the beginning of the Yom Kippur War. Egyptian troops broke through the fortifications in just two hours, thanks to the surprise of the attack and overwhelming firepower.

Therefore, for Ukraine the main question arises in terms of resources for organizing defense. The Ukrainian Armed Forces chose labor-intensive and not always winning tactics, as Western experts also point out.

“Static defense is rarely a good military solution because it kind of limits your ability to maneuver,” Edward Arnold, an employee of the British Joint Institute for Defense Studies, quotes The Telegraph as saying.

Problems arise with the “saturation” of the trenches with manpower, and with the length of the defensive lines - while both the dragon’s teeth and trenches with barbed wire can be completely bypassed from the flanks.

DRONES WILL MAKE A BREAKTHROUGH
But if we assume that the conditional “Zaluzhny Line” will eventually be created, the question will arise for Russian troops in preparing the means to break through layered defense.

According to experts, when planning a breakthrough of defense lines, it is necessary to analyze the experience of the Ukrainian summer “counter-offensive”. It was stopped, among other things, by continuous mining and the active use of drones by Russian troops.

“If we don’t want to repeat the enemy’s mistakes, we need unmanned armored platforms for mine clearance in large numbers,” Mikhailovsky points out. — The Ukrainian Armed Forces simply did not have enough of the same minesweepers. Now they’re trying to make them out of tractors or something else.”

This is not suitable for us, we need unmanned vehicles, because with the current saturation of the front with drones, no engineering equipment will last long, this must be understood, notes Mikhailovsky.

Among the advantages that Russian troops have are remote mine clearance systems, such as the UR-77 Zmey Gorynych, which can break through “corridors” in minefields.

But to do this, the vehicles also need to approach directly to the front line, exposing themselves to a possible attack from drones or artillery.

Another trump card that can be successfully implemented when breaking through defensive lines is the combination of heavy artillery with guidance drones. It is thanks to the use of such a combination that Russian troops manage to “grind” enemy fortifications in the suburbs of Donetsk, gradually moving forward.

EVEN PASSIVE DEFENSE MAY NOT WORK
Therefore, Zelensky’s bet on passive defense may not work. Moreover, Kyiv has to abandon offensive plans due to funding problems.

“Any defense is not about some sitting in the trenches and others running. The defenders need artillery, shells, communications. All this is needed to competently repel attacks and counterattack yourself. Without help from the United States, the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be limited,” adds Alexander Mikhailovsky.

In Kyiv they realize that abandoning the initiative could lead to a real defeat of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, so they promise not to abandon offensive plans.

Any defense will be “active”, and the withdrawal of troops will be used to prepare reserves, said the head of Vladimir Zelensky’s office, Andriy Ermak, in an interview with Figaro. According to him, the troops at the front need rest and lack people and resources. Therefore, it is necessary now to retreat to defensive lines in order to attack again later.

For Russian troops, the task of breaking through the front line is of paramount importance: not only to knock the enemy out of the territory of Donbass, but also not to give him a break and the opportunity to seize the initiative himself in the foreseeable future.

Otherwise you won't be able to reach it. What and from whom will be confiscated for fakes about the Russian Armed Forces
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Oleg Krivoshapov

[REGNUM] On January 22, a bill was introduced to the State Duma, which proposes to introduce into the Criminal Code the possibility of confiscation of property for fakes about the Russian Armed Forces and public calls aimed against the security of the state. The initiative is collective - 395 deputies are listed as authors.

It is proposed to tighten sanctions under the new article of the Criminal Code 207.3 on liability for the dissemination of knowingly false information about the army. The article was introduced in March 2022. Now the maximum penalty for it is up to five years in prison (parts 1 and 2) or up to 15 years in case of grave consequences (part 3). But in all cases - without confiscation.

The new bill talks about “the need to punish scoundrels, including cultural figures who support the Nazis, pour dirt on our country, soldiers and officers participating in the Northern Military District,” explained State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.

Strict standards will not affect “ordinary people who wrote something in correspondence with each other,” but will affect unscrupulous “bloggers who are trying to give any information in the name of their earnings,” MP Alexey Chepa assured.

The bill will allow the confiscation of money, valuables or other property used to finance crimes against the security of Russia, as well as the deprivation of honorary titles by court decision. In addition to the actual fakes about the army, it is proposed to confiscate property for public calls for extremist activity, demands to impose sanctions against Russia and for the rehabilitation of Nazism. At the same time, the law will not have retroactive effect, clarified the head of the Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov.

The bill has already received a positive response from the government; Krasheninnikov’s committee recommended adopting the document in the first reading. This could happen as early as January 24th.

The Kremlin is not ready to comment on the bill while the people’s representatives are working with it, noted the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.

Earlier, the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, reported that in 2023 his department opened 90 criminal cases for false reports about the Russian Armed Forces, and since the introduction of criminal liability for such acts (in March 2022) - 273 cases.

WITHOUT RETROACTIVE EFFECT AND ONLY FOR SELF-INTEREST
According to current legislation, not all of a convicted person’s property can be confiscated. Only that which was obtained as a result of committing a crime or was used to finance extremist (as well as terrorist) activities is subject to confiscation.

IA Regnum was reminded of this by the former investigator for particularly important cases of the main investigative department of the Investigative Committee at the prosecutor’s office, lawyer Andrei Grivtsov.

The illegal acts outlined in the new bill are not in all cases committed for selfish reasons, the interlocutor noted.

“ But if accused of such acts committed out of selfish interest, confiscation will become possible if the law is adopted, ” explained Grivtsov. “ And the prospect of adoption of the law, taking into account such a wide public announcement, is extremely high.”

The new law will primarily affect well-known public figures who, having gone abroad, “throw mud at Russia and, therefore, commit a crime under current legislation,” a member of the presidium of the National Anti-Corruption Committee (NAC), a former senior investigator for special crimes, told IA Regnum. important matters Pavel Zaitsev.

And since they, owning property in Russia, are mainly in unfriendly countries, there is no hope that they will be extradited to the Russian femida.

“They still felt complete impunity. The state, I believe, wanting there to be as few of these as possible, decided to show everyone that they were wrong, ” the expert argues. “ From the moment the law comes into force, in any case, all actions specified in it will be subject to confiscation of property, even if it does not have retroactive effect.”

But there were precedents when the adopted law acquired retroactive force, the lawyer claims. In the case of the new bill, this is unlikely, but “theoretically possible.”

At the same time, it is extremely important that the new bill, which has a powerful political component, works effectively and is applied extremely carefully, says Kirill Vyshinsky, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for Human Rights. “If this is a weapon, then it must be highly accurate,” the HRC member emphasizes.

“STICKING THEIR TONGUE OUT” TO SOCIETY AND THE STATE
In practice, this law will be selective and is unlikely to affect law-abiding citizens of Russia, lawyer Zaitsev is convinced.

“Everyone has already made their choice - who is for it, who is against it, ” he argues. “ Those who are committing crimes against Russia now have already left. And it will be mainly those who are visible who will commit new acts.”

And strict measures should indeed be applied to them, emphasized Candidate of Legal Sciences Janis Juksha in a commentary to IA Regnum.

The Criminal Code punishes quite harshly, including persons who disseminate deliberately false information about the army and call for violating the integrity of Russia.

As noted above, if certain qualifying criteria are met, you can get up to 15 years in prison, the lawyer notes. But not always.

“Today, a huge number of scammers have proliferated, who are even ready to serve three years and be released on parole and in the end not give up 20, 50 or even 100 million, often stolen, in order to end up with money, ” Yuksha points out. “ Therefore, the property issue is very important.”

He also notes that citizens who discredit Russia are, in fact, mostly located far beyond the borders of our country and it is very difficult to apply effective punishment against them.

“They stick their tongue out at our society and our law enforcement system, but often own property on Russian territory and receive income from this property, ” the expert notes. “ In this regard, the punishment for them can be much more effective if their property can be confiscated.”

From this point of view, property liability is completely justified, Yuksha concludes. Moreover, it has an obvious preventive component, the lawyer is sure. The new norm will cool the ardor of the most zealous “fighters against the regime” who betrayed the interests of their country. The entry into force of the new law will likely force many of them to think about the consequences of their choices.
