An NHS doctor was imprisoned, drugged, bound and gagged before being forced into marriage in Bangladesh, it emerged today, as a British judge issued an order telling her parents not "to pester, harass or intimidate" her.
Dr Humayra Abedin, 32, was held captive for four-and-a-half months by her family and was forced to marry while under the influence of drugs. She was freed by a court in Bangladesh and returned to Britain on Tuesday.
In the High Court in London this morning, Mr Justice Coleridge issued injunctions against Dr Abedin's parents, a paternal uncle and the man she was forced to marry. He declared that it was "vitally important for the message to be understood in those communities where this kind of behaviour is sanctioned" that the courts will act "swiftly and decisively" in cases were there had been such a "gross abuse of an individual's human rights".
Outside court Dr Abedin said: "I'm very happy to be back, but I'd like to get back to my life. I'm looking forward to starting my job."
She said she was grateful to the support she had received from the media and told others in her position: "Don't give up hope. There is hope."
Dr Abedin came to Britain in 2002 to take a masters in public health at Leeds University. A year later she moved to London to train as a GP at Whipps Cross hospital. She had been due to became a registrar at an East London surgery this summer.
In court, Dr Abedin's lawyer, Hassan Khan, read from a statement describing how she flew to Bangladesh in August, believing that her mother was very ill. On arriving at the family home "she was manhandled into the property by a number of people and immediately locked into a room," the statement read. "She was always monitored by four or five guards and she was not free to leave the property. Her passport, tickets and other documents were taken from her."
She was able to alert friends in Britain via text message, and a Bangladeshi human rights organisation called Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) came looking for her at the family home. This prompted her family to confiscate her phone and try to send her away with people claiming to be police officers. "Following her repeated refusal to go with them, her hands were tied behind her back and her head was covered with a cloth," the statement says.
Screaming for help, she was "physically manhandled" into an ambulance. "Two of the people in the ambulance gagged her by placing their hands over her mouth to the extent that at one point she believed she would suffocate because she could not breath. She then decided there was no point in screaming further because she feared for her life."
Dr Abedin was then taken to a psychiatric hospital in Dhaka where she was injected daily with mood stabilisers and psychiatric drugs. She remained there for almost two months. "By that time she was in a complete state of despair, her spirit was broken and she felt there was no means by which her position could be resolved. She felt helpless."
Isolated from the outside world, she was told that she had lost her job in Britain and could not return. Her parents told her they wanted her to wed Dr Khondokar Mohammad Abdul Jalal, whom she had previously declined to marry. On November 14, she was taken to the Khulna area, where, still under the influence of drugs, she "entered into a marriage ceremony against her will and under duress".
By early December, ASK had obtained a court hearing, but Dr Abedin was "told by her parents that if she said she wanted to go to the United Kingdom both her mother and her father would be put in prison and she would be placed in police custody".
"Dr Abedin states that although she is an intelligent and educated woman, by then her spirit and will had been so worn down that she believed what she was being told."
Last Sunday the court in Dhaka ruled that she must be freed. Dr Abedin "retains a natural love for her parents despite their treatment of her," the statement said. "She does not wish for her parents to suffer any punishment for what has been done by them to her. She is an only child."
Dr Abedin's solicitor, Anne-Marie Hutchinson, said of the case: "The profile it has received means that other people will feel that they can come forward and seek the relief that, as Mr Justice Coleridge said, they're entitled to." She said Dr Abedin would seek to have her marriage annulled in Britain and had no plans to return to Bangladesh.

A Bosnian Muslim waitress has demanded compensation from the London bar where she worked over a red dress she was asked to wear, British media reported Thursday. Fata Lemes, 33, told an employment tribunal that she felt forced to wear the sleeveless dress with a low neckline and an open back, thought the Rocket bar was run like a "sex club" and filed for 20,000 pounds ($31,000 dollars) in compensation.
Lemes described the dress as "physically revealing and openly sexual," according to the Daily Telegraph.

According to reports, Lemes said she originally began working at the bar in May wearing loose-fitting black clothes to work, but after about a week, she was told to wear the red dress. After trying it on, she refused to wear it, and said she was immediately fired.
Lemes also told the employment tribunal that on on her second evening at the bar, two guests told her they were looking for a woman to spend the night with.
Spring and Greene, the restaurant group that owns the Rocket bar, rejected the claims, however, and said the dress had been chosen by two other waitresses to give a "summery" look. The company also reportedly produced a photograph of the dress, worn by another waitress, with the Rocket's manager arguing that the color of the dress was chosen to match that of the bar.
The other waitress also modeled the dress for the employment tribunal and said she felt "completely comfortable" wearing it, according to the Telegraph.
The employment tribunal is expected to deliver its judgment on the case next year.

The mayor unveiled plans Friday to bring back the beloved red double-decker Routemaster to London's streets, but his opponents say the appeal to nostalgia throws pragmatism under the bus. Three years after the buses were all but banished from the city, Mayor Boris Johnson hopes the new versions--whose open back allows passengers to hop on or off--will be up and running by the 2012 Olympics.
The last Routemasters were retired from regular service in 2005 in favor of safer and more modern models.
"I promised Londoners that I would hold a competition to design a new bus for London, based on the much-missed Routemaster, and today we can unveil the fantastic winning designs," Johnson said.
More than 700 entries were received. Only two won.
One design by luxury auto maker Aston Martin (which produced one of the James Bond cars) and architecture firm Foster & Partners looks like a deluxe version of the old standby. Passengers sit on reconstituted leather upholstery while gazing through a glazed roof coated with solar panels to power heat and air conditioning. The rounded bus also boasts wood flooring and a saloon-like lower deck that the architect hopes will create "a tactile living room feel."
A second design, from automotive designer Capoco Design Ltd., showed a more traditional-looking model with a front engine grille similar to the Routemaster style.
Neither entry estimated the costs associated with the designs.
The city expects to award a contract to develop and build the first new bus by the end of 2009, with the new vehicles on the street by 2011 in time for the 2012 Olympics, according to a Transport for London official. It wasn't clear how quickly the new buses would be rolled out.
Cost is likely to be an issue.
Ken Livingstone, Johnson's opponent in the mayoral race, estimated the plan would end up costing about $160 million a year, which he said would mean doubling bus fares. Johnson insisted the cost was much lower and could be met from the extra money collected through a crackdown on fare evasion.

A 12-year-old seminary student was allegedly sodomised by his teacher in the jurisdiction of Gulberg police station on Friday. The victim, identified as Sheraz, was studying in a seminary in Gulberg, when his teacher, Ghulam Mohayyuddin, called him to a room in the upper storey the seminary, and allegedly sodomised him and threatened him not to disclose the incident to anyone.
The boy returned home and informed his parents about the incident, after which the local police arrested the teacher and registered a case on a complaint by the secretary of the seminary.

Two women were killed while one sustained burn injuries after being thrown into a fire by an exorcist on the pretext of exorcising demons in Mirpur Khas, a private TV channel reported on Friday. According to the channel, police had arrested the husband and father-in-law of one of the deceased on a murder charge in Kot Ghulam Muhammad area of Mirpur Khas district. Police said the three women had been taken to an amil (exorcist) by their in-laws to get evil spirits possessing them expelled, the channel said. One woman was injured. According to the channel, police had requested the magistrate to order exhumation of the women's bodies. The exorcist had not been arrested so far.

An Ethiopian housemaid lies bandaged in a government hospital after falling from a 12th floor balcony. She says her Lebanese employer pushed her off. "Madam asked me to hang the clothes. Then she came and pushed me from behind," the 25-year-old woman told Reuters. Too frightened to let her name be published, she said her employer had frequently threatened and abused her.
"Madam would tell me, 'I will spill hot oil on you', so I hid the oil. She would take a knife and threaten to kill me. She would beat me with shoes, pull my hair to the floor," the injured woman said, her face still bruised a month later.
According to the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW), nearly every week one of an estimated 200,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon dies. Suicide, falling while trying to escape their employer and untreated illness are the main causes of death. The employers are rarely prosecuted.

Looking at the basic demographics in Lebanon, the annual death rate per 1000 is about 7. So, you would expect about 1,400 to die out of a representative group of 200,000 each year, which is roughly 27 per week....
If the HRW figures are correct, migrant domestic workers in lebanon are incredibly safe.

If a Greek Orthodox does any of these things, is it any less of a crime? The important thing is that the government fails to prosecute these types of crimes.
