This is astounding, and from an FAQ list on a web site created by the Comptroller of the Currency:
Q: I made a deposit by check/cash and received a receipt, but the bank says that its records do not reflect the deposit. Since I have a receipt, doesn't the bank have to credit my account?
A: You should contact the bank and provide a copy of the deposit receipt. However, the deposit receipt is not conclusive evidence that you deposited the funds.
If the deposited item was a check, you will need to contact the party that provided the check to you and obtain a copy of the front and back of the check. If the deposited item was cash, and the bank does not agree to honor the receipt, you will need to consult with legal counsel about your rights.
So you deposit your cash at your bank, get a receipt, the money vanishes, and the bank just denies ever getting the deposit even though you have the receipt they gave you. YJCMTSU

It's a lot worse than that. When banks set up the authorized automatic account withdrawl system, so people could pay their bills automatically, they made it easy for companies to "borrow", interest free, from accounts they were not authorized to withdraw from.
That is, accounts are numbered consecutively, so when a company was given an account number, they could withdraw from it, and also take money from several more accounts they were *not* authorized to withdraw from.
They thieving company would then get the float on from between $100 and $500 a month, or until the account holders noticed that the money was missing.
The account holders would then contact the bank, who would refer them to the company that illegally stole their money. "Not our problem."
When finally notified, the company would promptly return the principle they stole, but not the income they had earned from it. And the bank would also profit, because they would not pay the interest on the money from the time it wasn't in the account.
In this way, these companies could not only get hundreds of thousands of dollars from interest free loans, but also get the float from the money while it was in their account. And since the banks also got free money out of the deal, only the account holders get screwed.
I noticed this was from Monday, but it was the first I'd heard of it. Strike from the record, if needed, mods.
LARGO, Fla. - A 38-year-old man was arrested after he called 911 and told a dispatcher he was surrounded by police officers and needed help, authorities said.
Police officers met Dana Farrell Shelton after being called to investigate a disturbance at a bar on Sunday but had found no problems and told him to move along.
Shelton, who officers said appeared intoxicated, then called 911 to report he was "surrounded by Largo police," according to an arrest affidavit.
"Our officers were standing there scratching their heads. He called, standing there in their presence," Largo Sgt. Melanie Holley said. "It's one of our 'truth is stranger than fiction' cases." "You should see the cases they get in Palm Beach County, where they don't even know how to vote," she added.
Shelton was charged with misdemeanor misuse of 911. The charge carries maximum penalties of one year in jail and $1,000 in fines. What a maroon!

For that brief period I worked for minimum wage at that wonderful, terribly expensive jewelry store, we always attached the sales tag to the store copy of the receipt, so the accountant would know which piece of inventory was sold for that amount of money, as we almost never sold anything for the listed price. Would a camera store or even a big box like Best Buy do something similar?

From a different article somewhere, a Canon rep says, since it is an older camera, if it was sent in for service or cleaning, they could match the serial number with the repair order and the owner at the time. Another possibly lead is if someone sent in a registration card.
On a narrow, leafy street in Northwest Washington, where Prius hybrid cars and Volvos are the norm, one man bought a flashy gray Hummer that was too massive to fit in his garage.
So he parked the seven-foot-tall behemoth on the street in front of his house and smiled politely when his eco-friendly neighbors looked on in disapproval at his "dream car."

Neighbor Lucille Liem, 37, who owns a Prius hybrid, said that a common sentiment in the neighborhood is that large vehicles are impractical and a strain on the Earth -- and Hummers in particular are a symbol of consumer excess.
"The neighborhood in general is very concerned with the environment," said Liem, whose Prius gets about 48 miles a gallon compared with the Hummer's 14 miles a gallon. "It's more liberal leaning. It's ridiculous to be driving a Hummer."
Liem added a little too quickly that she does not condone violence. . . .

A man who can afford a Hummer can afford several Molotov coctails thrown through neighbors windows at around 4 AM. But I guess a bunch of leftists don't have the logic gene necessary to make that assumption.

A guy who can afford a Hummer is probably living in a neighborhood with luxury homes. So, I guess it would also hold true that if his neighbor's home was larger than necessary for her to live in, (ie: using more fuel to heat/cool the excess sq. footage) it would be ok for him to paint, "For the Enviro" in large red letters across the front of it.

Jeebus, these hypocrites are freakin' morons! How much of a "carbon footprint" did they just leave, now that the guys has gotta go buy NEW 38" tires (rubber = petroleum), get a NEW paint job (paint = "air emissions") and new windows (= sand and heat)?
Same farkin' moonbats who don't get the whole "big picture" idea of releasing a LOT more toxins into the air by burning down a Hummer dealership and all the trucks than those same trucks would release by themselves in their entire lifetimes. Earth Liberation Front my arse!

In retaliation if it were me, wishfully thinking, I'd probably get several of the dirtiest, most beat up ugly old vehicles I could find and park them on the street for a time, starting them up occasionally with their exhaust sputtering. But that's just me, they wouldn't want me as a neighbor...

FBI agents trying to track the source of e-mailed bomb threats against a Washington high school last month sent the suspect a secret surveillance program designed to surreptitiously monitor him and report back to a government server, according to an FBI affidavit obtained by Wired News.
The court filing offers the first public glimpse into the bureau's long-suspected spyware capability, in which the FBI adopts techniques more common to online criminals.
The software was sent to the owner of an anonymous MySpace profile linked to bomb threats against Timberline High School near Seattle. The code led the FBI to 15-year-old Josh Glazebrook, a student at the school, who on Monday pleaded guilty to making bomb threats, identity theft and felony harassment.
In an affidavit seeking a search warrant to use the software, filed last month in U.S. District Court in the Western District of Washington, FBI agent Norman Sanders describes the software as a "computer and internet protocol address verifier," or CIPAV.
Sanders wrote that the spyware program gathers a wide range of information, including the computer's IP address; MAC address; open ports; a list of running programs; the operating system type, version and serial number; preferred internet browser and version; the computer's registered owner and registered company name; the current logged-in user name and the last-visited URL.
The CIPAV then settles into a silent "pen register" mode, in which it lurks on the target computer and monitors its internet use, logging the IP address of every computer to which the machine connects for up to 60 days.
Under a ruling this month by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, such surveillance -- which does not capture the content of the communications -- can be conducted without a wiretap warrant, because internet users have no "reasonable expectation of privacy" in the data when using the internet.

A Pakistani national who became a millionaire overnight through a tax scam has been stripped of more than £5 million in assets. Amer Munir had enjoyed a jet-set lifestyle thanks to the unbelievably simple VAT fraud, Manchester Evening News reported on Wednesday. A Manchester court jailed Munir for seven years last December. Now he has been ordered to pay back more than £5.6 million in assets or serve a further seven years imprisonment.
Judge Anthony Gee decided that Munir had profited by 7.5 million from the fraud, the £6 million the jury convicted him of, plus interest. The judge said he was stripping Munir of illegal profits and assets, which included his family home in Hale, now believed to be worth £1.4 million, an apartment in Dubai, money totalling £500,000 in bank accounts in Jersey, Pakistan and Switzerland, and various miscellaneous items. The compensation figure also included nearly £2 million in cash, which disappeared from his company bank account.

Three Perth children who died within 24 hours of falling ill had contracted a combination of a flu strain and a pneumonia-causing bacterial infection, the West Australian Health Department says.
The department's Communicable Disease Control director Dr Paul Van Buynder said all three children were under the age of five.
"It's apparent that all three of the children who had tragic consequences had very similar illnesses that started with a mild Influenza A infection and gone on from there to develop secondary bacterial complications,'' Dr Van Buynder said.
"Most of the children who have a secondary bacterial infection will develop a full-blown pneumonia and that will be part of the cause of the tragic consequences.''
Dr Van Buynder said an investigation by the health department had not discovered any links between the three dead children.
Worried parents have inundated emergency departments after the health authorities issued a warning on Friday urging parents to get children with fever and lethargy checked.
Double the number of patients normally seen were admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital's (PMH) emergency department, PMH Child and Adolescent Services executive director Dr Robyn Lawrence said.
Ten children an hour had been seen today, close to double the normal rate, with some parents waiting up to three hours to have their children checked by doctors.
About 21 children were admitted to the hospital yesterday which was about normal, Dr Lawrence said.
The health warning is still in place but Dr Van Buynder said parents whose children had had coughs and sniffles for some time should keep their children away from emergency hospital departments.
Dr Van Buynder said it was unusual for the flu strain and the bacteria, which is not uncommon, to kill children.
"Most years, despite the circulation of both the virus and the bacteria, we've seen no children who have this course of illness,'' Dr Van Buynder said.
Meanwhile, Queensland Health is urging all parents to vaccinate their young children against flu, especially if they also suffered from a medical condition such as heart disease or diabetes.
Health officials in Victoria said the number of flu cases were below average so far, while in NSW an initial increase in the number of flu cases had been reported going into the season.
