Homeowner kills 2 in bizarre burglary
A Packwood, Wash., man is wounded, but alive, after an evening of entertaining visitors turned into a gunfight when one of his guests opened fire on him while attempting to steal his gun collection.

The homeowner, whose name was not released by authorities, told Lewis County Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Doench that a male friend from nearby Morton, Wash., had arrived Wednesday morning for a visit, bringing with him two women and and a man from Las Vegas who he did not know.

The homeowner became suspicious, believing he was being distracted by three of the guests, so he retrieved his AR15 semi-automatic rifle and directed the visitors to another part of the house where he discovered that the fourth visitor had broken into his gun safe.

According to Seattle's KING-TV, the homeowner found one of the women loading guns from his collection into a truck and he told her to stop. She fired, hitting him in the ear. He said he fired back, killing her instantly.

The mutual friend of the homeowner and the trio from Las Vegas was also shot several times in the legs. Initial reports from the Longview Daily News suggest he was hit by stray bullets. The wounded was taken to a nearby hospital but died while waiting to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His name has not been released.

One man and his common-law wife from Las Vegas – Jason Brooks, 38, and Natalie Brooks, 44 – are being held on charges of robbery and burglary. Court papers reportedly say that one of them admitted they wanted to rob the homeowner in order to buy methamphetamine.

At this time, police are treating the incident as a case of self-defense.

"I know the individual," said Gene Seiber of the Lewis County Sheriff's Office. "There's nothing that prohibits [him] by law from possessing firearms.

"Last night he was cooperative, but you could tell he was a little shocky because the fact is he'd been shot," he said.

Camera tips off men to robbery
CROSBY, TX — Startled by a loud noise in the middle of the night, Jay and Russell Jefferies stumbled from their beds early Wednesday to view the monitor of their home security camera to see what had interrupted their slumber.

What they saw jolted them awake.

According to authorities, four heavily armed men were outside their small house in the 3900 block of Crosby Barbers Hill Road trying to kick in the front door about 2 a.m.

The Jefferieses, whom investigators think are brothers, rushed to grab their shotguns and opened fire as the intruders burst through the door shooting, said Harris County sheriff's Sgt. N. Araguz. One brother managed to call 911 in the midst of flying bullets, he said.

By the time Harris County sheriff's deputies responded to the weapons-disturbance call, two suspects had been fatally wounded. Several hours later, deputies arrested the other suspects on charges of aggravated robbery.

#2  Whatever is behind it, the boys stood their ground. First 2 thru the door blown away, and winged the other 2 bad enough to need medical care where the cops could saunter in and do their thing. This episode does sound suspicious, but imagine if they had been unarmed and just had a telephone to call 911. Think it would have turned out the same way ?

#3  2 issues here far as I'm concerned:
1) holding your own property against invaders (good)
2) what did that property consist of ( pure conjecture as to whether it was legal)

keep the two separate.

at any rate 2 bad guys that will not be repeat offenders and 2 more that the state has an interest in.

Mariah Takes On Porn Star
This will require some serious research.
Singer Carey seeks to derail Mary Carey trademark bid
DECEMBER 28-- After threatening legal action to protect her valuable name from an encroaching porn star, Mariah Carey yesterday filed a formal opposition to the bid by actress (and former California gubernatorial candidate) Mary Carey to trademark her stage name. In a notice filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the pop singer's company, Automatic Princess Holdings, argues that Mary Carey's bid to trademark her name for use in adult films, DVDs, cassettes, computer programs, and other commercial endeavors is likely to result in confusion for the consumer. The public, Mariah Carey contends, is "likely to mistakenly associate the goods offered" by Mary Carey--whose real name is Mary Cook--with the performer's "goods and services." The December 27 notice of opposition, a copy of which you'll find below, requests that Mary Carey's trademark attempt be rejected by USPTO officials. Mary Carey, 26, has appeared in films like "Hot Showers 6" and "Lesbian Big Boob Bangeroo 2," and received 11,000 votes in her 2003 election won by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Mariah Carey, 36, is, as her filing notes, "a world-famous singer, musical performer, and celebrity." She also appeared in the 2001 film "Glitter."
Since it's The Smoking Gun, there are documents for your perusal. I'd attend to posting numerous "relevant" pix, but Fred would prolly thump me, but good, for what I have in mind. I'd deserve it, too.

#1  Porno bores almost as much as Mariah Carey. She has had more hit singles than the Beatles because there is little talent in the contemporary music market. I listened to American Top 40 in the eighties. Frankly, I wouldn't enjoy even one of the current top 40. Rock died with ZZ-Top.

#10  Mary Carey maintains that her breasts are real (although she admits to using hair coloring). In fact, in her campaign for Governor, she advocated a large excise tax for cosmetic surgery (to enhance revenues). She also advocated decreased regulation for 'personal entertainment workers'.

What I liked best (other than the fact that she is beautiful) was her campaign slogan which was something like:

"We've been screwed by a Brown, We've been screwed by a Gray. Isn't it time for a blonde/"

Trailer Full of Broccoli Disappears
VILLA PARK, Ill. - Someone got way more than the recommended daily serving of vegetables when a refrigerated trailer loaded with $50,000 worth of broccoli was stolen.
Possibly the Greens? Or the Lettuce Ladies?
The 48-foot trailer disappeared from its rented parking space in the Chicago suburb of Villa Park sometime between Sunday and Tuesday morning, police said.
I know nothing ... nothing!
Detective Ed Zorich said the thief was probably after the trailer, not the vegetables.
If somebody eats all that broccoli they're gonna need a butt-load of Beano.
... so to speak.
"What is someone going to do with that amount of produce?" Zorich said. "On the black market, I can't imagine that's something that's worth money to anybody."
Oh, I don't know. Think about all the Black Market Broccoli-Cheese soup that can be made. All they need to do is steal a truckload of cheese.
Police entered the trailer into a stolen-vehicle database, but had no immediate leads. "We have homicides happening in town," Zorich said. "We're not really looking for a truck of broccoli right now."
Besides, you can't get your kids to eat broccoli anyway.

#4  Reminds me of an old joke:
There was a man who had worked at a factory for twenty years. Every night when he left the plant, he would push a wheelbarrow full of straw to the guard at the gate. The guard would look through the straw, and find nothing and pass the man through. On the day of his retirement the man came to the guard as usual but without the wheelbarrow.

Having become friends over the years, the guard asked him, "Charlie, I've seen you walk out of here every night for twenty years. I know you've been stealing something. Now that you're retired, tell me what it is. It's driving me crazy." Charlie simply smiled and replied, "Okay, Wheelbarrows! "

Maybe they weren't after the trailer's contents, but just the trailer.

Cat saves Australian family from fire
An Australian family of four owe their lives to their pet cat after the animal prevented a house fire from turning into a tragedy, an official has said.
After a mattress caught on fire in the night, the courageous moggie leapt to the aid of its sleeping owner by digging its claws into his face, waking him before the blaze engulfed the family home in north Queensland.

"The occupant was woken by the household cat which was scratching his face, alerting (him) to the ensuing dangers," Cairns firefighter Robert White-MacFarlane told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The owner was then able to wake his family, who escaped the blaze and called fire authorities.

Thanks to the animal's timely warning, the fire, which investigators believe was sparked by a cigarette, left only minor damage to the Cairns home.

"There were alarms throughout the house but the smoke saturation hadn't reached a point where they'd activated the alarms in the adjacent room," White-MacFarlane said.

Europe
Macedonia vs. Greece: Crisis Over Naming An Airport "Al The Great"
And we're not talking Al Bundy, either.
Greeks don't have enough enemies, that's why they're creating more ...
Skopje, 29 Dec. (AKI) - Greece has vehemently protested against Macedonian government plans to name the airport in the capital of Skopje after an ancient Greek military commander, Alexander the Great, saying it would further strain the relations between the two countries. "Skopje is again seeking a false base in the past,” said Greek foreign minister Dora Bakoiani. "Alexander the Great was a leading figure of global dimensions who, by spreading Greek civilisation though the whole world known at that time, established the foundations of history,” said Bakoiani.

"After 2,300 years, history can neither be changed, nor falsified,” she added. "Such behavior will not help Skopje's NATO and European expectations," Bakoiani warned.
But her Macedonian counterpart, Antonio Milososki, said his government intended to go ahead with the plans to re-name Skopje airport, denying they are an attempt "to monopolise the name of a world historic figure which is glorified in many countries”

Greece has threatened it would block Macedonia's entry into the European Union if the dispute wasn’t solved first, but Skopje poured new oil on fire on Thursday proposing to name the airport after Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.). Macedonia's population descended from Slavs who arrived there in the sixth century, but Macedonians claim they are ancestors of Alexander.

#5  At root, the problem here is Greek doubts about their occupation of the northern third of modern day Greece in the 1920s, which was predominantly Slav, and guilt over their loss of the area around Smyrna in modern day Turkey (after a disasterous military campaign to conquer Turkey), which was predominantly Greek.

Indonesians threaten Playboy trial
The trial of Playboy Indonesia's editor-in-chief has been closed to the public, angering dozens of Muslims who threatened to break down the courtroom doors unless they were allowed in. Erwin Arnada went on trial three weeks ago on indecency charges and may be jailed for up to 32 months if convicted.

On Thursday, about 30 people protested outside the court and tried to force their way into the courtroom before officials intervened. They accused the presiding judge of being biased towards Playboy, which they said had "destroyed the morals of the nation".
Under Indonesian law, indecency trials are closed when witness testimony is being heard to avoid obscene material or discussions being made public. Earlier hearings in Arnada's trial were open. When the toned-down version of Playboy Indonesia launched in April - containing no nudity – some Muslims protested against what they called the arrival of the global icon of pornography.

On Thursday, about 30 people protested outside the court and tried to force their way into the courtroom before officials intervened. They accused the presiding judge of being biased towards Playboy, which they said had "destroyed the morals of the nation". Arnada told reporters that the protesters were entitled to demonstrate, but "I also ask that they respect this legal process".

Pornographic films on video, though illegal, also are sold quite openly at stores across the country and some magazines are more sexually graphic than Playboy. At earlier hearings, prosecutors told the South Jakarta district court that Arnada oversaw photo-shoots and selected pictures of models in underwear. Indonesia is secular, but also has the largest Muslim population - 190 million - in the world. Some Muslims have been pushing hard to impose strict Islamic law there.
