Britain
3 Babies, 2 Wombs, 1 Mother
LONDON, Dec. 22, 2006 (AP) A woman with two wombs has given birth to three children in what is believed to the first case of its kind, a hospital official said Friday.

Hannah Kersey, 23, gave birth to three girls in September, said Richard Dottle, a spokesman for Southmead Hospital in Bristol where the triplets were born. The children spent nine weeks in the hospital but the reason was not disclosed.

The girls — two identical twins delivered from one womb and a third, fraternal twin — were born seven weeks early by Caesarean, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported. Kersey and her partner Mick Faulkner said they were "over the moon" at how healthy and happy the girls were.

"They are three lovely and incredible children, all with very different personalities," the BBC quoted Kersey as saying. "There haven't been any similar accounts where three healthy babies are born of two wombs," said Yakoub Khalaf, a consulting gynecologist at Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospital. He said that multiple pregnancies tended to be risky, and that delivering triplets under such abnormal circumstances was even riskier.

Khalaf said that simultaneous pregnancies in two separate wombs are rare, but not unheard of. He has identified just 70 such cases in the past 50 years.

The delivery of triplets from two wombs has never been recorded, he said.

Separate wombs, sometimes known as a uterus didelphys, are uncommon, although not rare. About one woman in 1,000 has them, according to Khalaf.

The condition would have occurred before Kersey was born when the two sides of her womb failed to merge completely. Because of that, the separate wombs tend to have a considerably smaller volume and their contractions are weaker, said Michael Heard, a consulting gynecologist at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester.

Pregnancies are possible, although they tend to result in premature births more than half the time. Heard said that in the case of a Caesarean two operations would have to be performed.

"This lady was extremely lucky," said Khalaf.

Kersey was not immediately available for comment on Friday but the Southwest News Agency based in Filton, England, said it had bought the rights to her story. It would not disclose the amount.

#1  Ummm, Comment, swine have two complete wombs, vaginas, etc.
So while humans normaly do not, this is not unheard of.

#4  So she had a litter; BFD, my cats do it all the time (and I bet she didn't cut the cord with her teeth and eat the placenta either, that big phony).

On the other hand, if the story had been 3 Mothers, 2 Wombs, 1 baby, it would have been even more unusual, wouldn't it.

Geez, howza about "The girls were born seven weeks early" from the next paragraph?

Duh!

Well, cattle commonly have horns and tails, too. But if a human grows either, it's news.

I was curious about the pig anatomy, however, and did a google image search, hoping to find a nice clear drawing of the arrangement.

I do not suggest you try this at home. One thing you'll learn is that pig uterus is a delicacy in certain countries I didn't trouble to determine.

Bleargh.

#8  Angie - I hate to make you feel worse but so is the human placenta - right 'cheer in the good ole US of A. In the early 80's Mothering(?) Magazine listed some.

Hevesi resigns, pleads guilty
Alan Hevesi pleaded guilty this morning to one count of defrauding the government, a Class E felony, and resigned his post, marking the end a four-month scandal that brought down one of the state’s top elected officials.
Hevesi was booked, fingerprinted and released on his own recognizance.
Hevesi was booked, fingerprinted and released on his own recognizance. He is due back Feb. 9 for sentencing. He must pay a $5,000 fine in addition to the more than $200,000 restitution he has already paid. He also agreed to resign from his post effective immediately, and resign from his new term, to which he was re-elected with 57 percent this November, effective 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, 2007.

Appearing before Albany County Judge Stephen W. Herrick, Hevesi, 66, a Democrat whose job was to be the top watchdog over state agencies, admitted he had state security workers drive his wife and attend to her personal needs, and that he didn’t intend to pay for it. He said there were security concerns for Carol Hevesi, but the work of these taxpayer-funded employees went beyond that.

Olde Tyme Religion
Man sets self aflame in Calif. protest
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A man used flammable liquid to light himself on fire, apparently to protest a San Joaquin Valley school district's decision to change the names of winter and spring breaks to Christmas and Easter vacation.

The man, who was not immediately identified, on Friday also set fire to a Christmas tree, an American flag and a revolutionary flag replica, said Fire Captain Garth Milam.

Beside the tree the man stood with an American flag draped around his shoulders and a red gas can over his head.

Seeing the deputy, the man poured the liquid over his head. He quickly burst into flames when the fumes from the gas met the flames from the tree.

The deputy ordered the man to drop to the ground as he and a parole agent sprayed him with fire extinguishers.

The man suffered first degree burns on his shoulders and arms, Milam said.

Kern County Sheriff's Deputy John Leyendecker said the man had a sign that read: "(expletive) the religious establishment and KHSD."

On Thursday, the Kern High School Board of Trustees voted to use the names Christmas and Easter instead of winter and spring breaks.

If this guy wants to go out in a blaze, shit - stick weenies on coat hangers and tell him to fire it up. I'll cook mine over the tree, but that's the only concern I'd show in this inane situation.

Twits in a Tree

Protesters -- and one columnist -- go out on a limb in Berkeley

Living in the top of a tree in the Berkeley hills has some lovely moments. But the commute -- 50 feet straight up -- is a killer.

When three tree-sitters in a group called Save the Oaks took up residence this month in the grove just below UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium, they got a lot of attention. They vowed to live in the branches until Cal agreed not to knock down 38 mature oak trees in the grove to make way for a $125 million athletic training facility.

Since then, the city, neighbors and the tree-sitters have filed lawsuits in an attempt to stop the project, and this week UC agreed to put it on hold until January. Meanwhile, tree-sitting celebrity Julia "Butterfly" Hill, who spent two years in a redwood, is supporting the protest. In other words, it's classic Berkeley.

But this morning, one of the sitters, 20-year-old Jessica Walsh, will mark three weeks in a tree, which is a substantial commitment. So far she's endured pounding rainstorms, trunk-swaying winds and even a magnitude 3.7 earthquake.

So what is it like up there?

#1  If I was a more hard-hearted sort I would nominate them for Rachel Corrie Pancake awards. But I just have to have a little sympathy for folks so crazy they regard living on an ironing board and pooping in a bottle as a vacation. Like polygamy, their crime is its own punishment.

#4  The simple answer is -- in a container that is then lowered on a rope. But because they are extremely ecologically minded, there's more to the story. Here's the poop: "We are keeping the defecation and giving it to our friend Burlap," Ayr said. "He takes it to a secret location where it is turned into compost to grow more trees."

Burlap: "so I've got that going for me ....which is nice"

#5  Tell them they won't cut the trees down with one provision. They stay in them forfuckinever. They come down, so do the trees...

#7  And of course to be truly one with nature they should be buck-naked.

After all clothing is made from plants, animals, and petroleum products right?

Better eat only what the tree is willing to provide to its guests. Don't want to use Gasoline or electricity (made from fuels...) or nuclear power right?

BTW - how are you heating that thermos of coffee? A fire (burn wood) or electric stove (where does the electricity come from?).
