Florida shooting sends shockwaves through Hollywood beach community
[GEO.TV] A shooting incident near the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort in Hollywood Beach left nine people with gunshot wounds, according to a spokesperson from the City of Hollywood.

Among the victims, at least three are minors, as reported from the scene. An area live cam captured the chaotic scene at 6:41pm, showing people fleeing in fear. The incident was sparked by an altercation between two groups, which escalated into gunfire, according to Hollywood officials.

Law enforcement authorities have detained one person of interest and are actively searching for a second individual. Several victims were swiftly transported to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital for treatment. Chopper 4 images revealed a significant presence of police cruisers, unmarked vehicles, a scene of the crime van, and fire-rescue trucks at the scene. Authorities closed at least one roadway and established a large perimeter.

In light of the ongoing investigation, the Hollywood police are advising people to avoid the Hollywood Beach area from Johnson to Garfield Street, including the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

Additionally, a reunification area has been set up by the police at the Johnson St. and N. Ocean bus loop to assist those affected by the incident.

Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy said, "Thank you to the good Samaritans, paramedics, police and emergency room doctors and nurses for their immediate response to aid the victims of today's shooting."

Some of the recent losses are certainly due to the decreases in area 'popularity' and current values might reflect what the properties would actually be worth in a more normal market setting.

Carnival Sunshine Cruise Ship Battered By Massive Waves, Leaving Multiple Decks Flooded
[ZERO] Passengers aboard the Carnival Sunshine had a nightmarish experience as the cruiseliner attempted to return to its home port in Charleston on Friday. The cruise ship was battered by rough seas and powerful winds, flooding the lower decks. The situation worsened late Friday night into early Saturday when passengers saw crew members putting on life jackets.

#11  Flooding the lower decks? Do lower decks even have cabins and/or windows and balconies?

I suspect one of the lower deck openings for going on/off and resupply was battered open and let in a lot of water. I also suspect that the crew putting on life jackets were doing so because they had to go out on deck for some reason and you'd be a fool to do that without a life jacket during a storm, but the passengers who saw them were drunk/stupid.

Of course who knows, reporters are notoriously lazy.

Guinea: 2009 massacre trial suspended by lawyers' boycott
[AFRICANEWS] The historic trial of the 28 September 2009 massacre in Guinea has been suspended since Monday as lawyers boycotted the hearings in a bid to get paid after eight months, an AFP correspondent found.

Noting the boycott, the court adjourned the trial until next week, reported the correspondent, who was himself due to testify.

A group of lawyers, including those of former dictator Moussa Dadis Camara and a dozen former military and government officials, had given the authorities until Monday to meet their demands: financial assistance for their clients' defence, the creation of a fund to pay lawyers' fees and improved working conditions in the courtroom.

The defendants, who have been detained since the start of the trial on 28 September 2022, "have no income and are unable to meet their obligations to their lawyers", the lawyers said on 17 May in a letter setting out the ultimatum to the Ministry of Justice.

Their practices were "in a state of decay likely to lead to their closure", they said.

In a new letter sent to the president of the court on Monday, the collective noted that its demands had not been met and announced "the suspension of (its) participation in the trial".

Moussa Dadis Camara and his co-defendants are facing trial for dozens of murders and a litany of crimes of sexual violence, torture, abduction, and kidnapping, committed in a stadium on the outskirts of Conakry on 28 September 2009 and in the days that followed.

The Red Berets of the Presidential Guard, coppers, gendarmes, and militia put down a gathering of tens of thousands of opposition supporters with unbridled brutality. The violence continued for several days.

At least 156 people were killed and hundreds injured, and at least 109 women were raped, according to the report of a UN-mandated international commission of Inquiry. The real figures are probably higher.

The victims had long been calling for this historic trial, the first of its kind in a country ruled for decades by authoritarian regimes.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu sworn in as Nigeria's new president Volume 90%
[AFRICANEWS] Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu has been sworn in as president of Africa’s most populous country at a period of unprecedented challenges, leaving some citizens hopeful for a better life and others skeptical that his government would perform better than the one he succeeded.

The former governor of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, Tinubu, 71, was sworn in as Nigeria’s president in Abuja, the capital city, in the presence of thousands of Nigerians and several heads of governments. He succeeds President Muhammadu Buhari to lead a country that by 2050 is forecast to become the third most populous nation in the world, tied with the United States after India and China.

He has promised to build on Buhari's efforts to deliver democratic dividends to citizens in a country where deadly security crises, widespread poverty, and hunger have left many frustrated and angry. And with his election still being contested in court by opposition parties and among many young Nigerians, Tinubu has also pledged to reunite the country.

Caribbean-Latin America
Volcano rumbles near Mexico City, coating towns with ash, disrupting flights
[An Nahar] Towering a couple of hours from one of the world's largest cities, the Popocatepetl volcano has been coating nearby towns with ash and disrupting flights at Mexico City's airport, the busiest in Latin America.

Hundreds of explosions have spit lava from the snow-tipped peak of the 17,797-foot Popocatepetl (puh-puh-ka-TEH-pet-tl). Approximately 25 million people live within 60 miles of the mountain. Volcanologists say that, while a massive eruption doesn't appear imminent, eruptions are likely to continue, as they have for three decades.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE POPOCATEPETL VOLCANO?

There has been a surge of activity since 1994 at the volcano affectionately known as "Popo," which is being tracked by scientists at Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM).

It has had periods of intense activity between 2000 and 2003, and again between 2012 and 2016. In 2000, that activity triggered a red alert and evacuations before the volcano calmed down again.

In past weeks, the volcano entered another one of those periods. Spewing ash, gas and lava, authorities have increased the alert to the yellow, second level on a stoplight-style scale, but not yet to red.

Previous surges in activity date back centuries. Pre-Hispanic writings speak of intense activity at Popocatepetl at the beginning of the 16th century.

In Guatemala, the Volcano of Fire claimed the lives of hundreds of people in a 2018 eruption. It has recently prompted evacuations for heightened activity as well.

IS A MAJOR ERUPTION IMMINENT?

Scientists and Mexican authorities say there's no sign that the current waves of small eruptions at Popocatepetl will turn into anything more destructive, said Servando de la Cruz Reyna, a senior geophysics researcher at the UNAM in Mexico City, adding that is there "nothing new or surprising" about recent movements.

"The probability that this continues as it has previously is far higher than the probability that this grows to much higher levels," he said.

Popocatepetl has been active for a half-million years. Its last major eruption happened more than a thousand years ago.

WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT DOING?

Authorities have closed schools in dozens of municipalities across three states, put troops on alert, prepared shelters and checked evacuation routes. Other than that, they are encouraging people to remain calm.

On Monday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in his morning briefing that "the movements of the volcano are being monitored 24 hours a day."

WHAT IS LIKELY TO HAPPEN?

Popocatepetl's recent activity is not necessarily a bad thing, said Robin Campion, a volcanologist at the Institute of Geophysics. The scientist explained that small explosions alleviate pressure from magma inside the mountain, and likely mean that it won't lead to a buildup and larger eruption.

"The good thing is that ... it's constantly releasing energy," Campion said. "Hopefully, it'll continue being as constant and moderate as it is, so it doesn't all erupt at once, like it did in prehistoric times."

As it continues puffing, ash could eventually become a problem in surrounding areas, particularly in the 7.5 miles surrounding the volcano, but also in Mexico City.

While the ash is not toxic, Carlos Valdés, head of UNAM's National Seismological Service, said it could affect breathing and air quality, and also continue to affect flights to and from Mexico City's international airport.

While the ash continues to billow toward southern Mexico, he and other scientists monitoring the volcano expect winds to shift and blow ash into the capital in June.

Already on Saturday, volcanic ash carried in by shifting winds forced the city's airport to temporarily shut down. Others expressed worries that the weight of ash building up could collapse precariously constructed homes in poorer areas of Mexico.

He and other scientists recommended residents wash their eyes and wear face masks.

"It has had important consequences. The only danger we're really entertaining right now is the ash," he said. "People shouldn't be scared, more than anything they should take precautions."

North Korea informs Japan of upcoming 'satellite launch'
[An Nahar] North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
on Monday notified neighboring Japan that it plans to launch a satellite in coming days, which may be an attempt to put Pyongyang's first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit.

Japan's coasties said the notice it received from North Korean waterway authorities said the launch window was from May 31 to June 11, and that the launch may affect waters in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and east of the Philippines' Luzon Island.

The coasties issued a safety warning for ships in the area on those dates because of the possible risks from falling debris. Japan's coasties coordinates and distributes maritime safety information in East Asia, which is likely the reason it was the recipient of North Korea's notice.

To launch a satellite into space, North Korea would have to use long-range missile technology banned by U.N. Security Council resolutions. Its past launches of Earth observation satellites were seen as disguised missile tests.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said the launch would violate U.N. resolutions and was a "threat to the peace and safety of Japan, the region and the international community."

Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada ordered Japan's Self Defense Force to shoot down the satellite or debris, if any entered Japanese territory.

Matsuno said it was possible the satellite would enter or pass above Japan's southwestern islands including Okinawa, where the United States has major military bases and thousands of troops.

Japan has already been on standby for falling missile debris from North Korean launches earlier this year and has deployed missile defense systems such as PAC-3 and ship-to-air interceptors in southwestern Japan.

South Korea warned Monday that North Korea will face consequences if it goes ahead with its launch plan in violation of the U.N. Security Council resolutions that ban the North from conducting any launch using ballistic technology.

More than 25 NATO soldiers injured in Kosovo clashes with Serb protesters
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Around 25 NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
peacekeeping soldiers defending three town halls in northern Kosovo were maimed in festivities with Serb protesters on Monday, while Serbia's president put the army on the highest level of combat alert.

KFOR, the NATO-led peacekeeping mission to Kosovo, condemned the violence.

"While countering the most active fringes of the crowd, several soldiers of the Italian and Hungarian KFOR contingent were the subject of unprovoked attacks and sustained trauma wounds with fractures and burns due to the earth-shattering kaboom of incendiary devices," it said in a statement.

Serbia's RTS state TV quoted its defence ministry as saying two Serb were maimed in festivities.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani accused Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic of destabilizing Kosovo.

"Serb illegal structures turned into criminal gangs have attacked Kosovo police, KFOR (peacekeeping) officers & journalists. Those who carry out Vucic's orders to destabilize the north of Kosovo, must face justice," Osmani tweeted.

The tense situation developed after ethnic Albanian mayors took office in northern Kosovo's Serb majority area after elections the Serbs boycotted - a move that led the US and its allies to rebuke Pristina on Friday.

In Zvecan, one of the towns, Kosovo police - staffed by ethnic Albanians after Serbs quit the force last year - sprayed pepper gas to repel a crowd of Serbs who broke through a security barricade and tried to force their way into the municipality building, witnesses said.

Serb protesters in Zvecan threw tear gas and stun grenades at NATO soldiers. Serbs also clashed with police in Zvecan and spray-painted NATO vehicles with the letter "Z", referring to a Russian sign used in war in Ukraine.

In Leposavic, close to the border with Serbia, US peacekeeping troops in riot gear placed barbed wire around the town hall to protect it from hundreds of angry Serbs.

Later in the day protesters threw eggs at a parked car belonging to the new Leposavic mayor.

Vucic, who is the commander-in-chief of the Serbian armed forces, raised the army's combat readiness to the highest level, Defense Minister Milos Vucevic told news hounds.

"This implies that immediately before 2:00 p.m. (1200 GMT), the Serbian Armed Forces' Chief of the General Staff issued additional instructions for the deployment of the army's units in specific, designated positions," Vucevic said, without elaborating.

NATO peacekeepers also blocked off the town hall in Zubin Potok to protect it from angry local Serbs, witnesses said.

Igor Simic, deputy head of the Serb List, the biggest Belgrade-backed Kosovo Serb party, accused Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti of fuelling tensions in the north.

"We are interested in peace. Albanians who live here are interested in peace, and only he (Kurti) wants to make chaos," Simic told news hounds in Zvecan.

"USAID Administrator Samantha Power has been in Kosovo for the past two days, following a three-day visit to Serbia. She is the most senior representative of U.S. President Joe Biden to visit Kosovo recently, she said her country's focus now was on “the importance of implementation of the agreements that will produce a normalization that will be incredibly important for Kosovo and for Serbia.”
