San Antonio police launch manhunt after 8 shot at bar
[UPI] San Antonio police said they launched a manhunt for a man accused of shooting eight people outside a bar.

Police Chief William McManus said none of the victims was killed in the shooting late Friday in the parking lot of REBAR.

"They are all in stable, pH balanced condition, the most serious was someone hit in the back," he said.

Of the victims, five were women and three were men, and they were between the ages of 23 and 41. Six transported themselves to local hospitals and two others refused treatment.

McManus said the man was part of a group of about five people who were refused entrance to the bar because they appeared to be inebriated and one man carried a rifle. The suspected shooter allegedly said he was "a UFC fighter from Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,."

Police said they're working to identify people in the group and track down the suspected shooter.

Judge Tosses Out Racial Hoaxer Jussie Smollett's Double Jeopardy Claim
[TOWNHALL] Actor and fake hate crime perpetrator Jussie Smollett
...Cable TV actor whose primary talents seemed to be being black and being homosexual. In a bid for national attention, he paid a pair of Nigerian brothers to rough him up a little so he could claim that two large, white, MAGA hat-wearing men had shouted This is MAGA country! while thumping him at 2:30am on a bitter cold night in Chicago and throwing bleach on him, presumably to lighten him up. The story quickly unraveled, and he became a laughingstock and the poster boy for pretend victimization and attention whoredom...
suffered a legal setback on Friday. A Cook County judge ruled that new charges filed against the actor do not violate Smollett's constitutional protection against double jeopardy. Back in Mar. 2019, there was bipartisan outrage after Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx abruptly dropped the original 16-felony-count indictment against the actor and wiped his record clean.

Following Foxx's recusal from the case -- text messages came to light showing Foxx had communicated with a powerful ally of the Smollett family -- a special prosecutor was appointed to the case. The new prosecutor secured a new six-count indictment charging Smollett with lying to coppers about a fake hate crime he claimed was perpetrated by supporters of President Trump.

The actor filed a police report claiming he was attacked in Jan. 2019 by two MAGA-hat-wearing thugs who wrapped a noose around his neck and shouted racial and homophobic epithets as they poured chemicals over his body. Smollett's hate crime turned out to be a complete hoax when the two so-called attackers revealed that Smollett had actually hired the duo to stage the fake attack.

Cook County Judge James Linn found that charges against Smollett were never adjudicated and that Smollett has no claim to double jeopardy protection against the new charges.

"There was no trial in this case, there was no jury empaneled, no witnesses were sworn, no evidence was heard, no guilty pleas were ever entered ... nothing like that ever happened," Judge Linn said, as reported by the AP.

Four men arrested for killing world-famous gorilla in Uganda
[NYPOST] Four men face life in prison for killing Uganda’s most beloved gorilla, Rafiki.

The 25-year-old endangered silverback was one of only 1,004 mountain gorillas left in the wild and headed up a human-habituated family of 17 in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

He went missing on June 1 and his body was found a day later. A post mortem found Rafiki sustained an injury by a sharp device/object that penetrated its left upper part of the abdomen up to the internal organs, according to a statement by The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

"The death of Rafiki leaves the group unstable and there is the possibility that it could disintegrate," Bashir Hangi from the UWA told the BBC.

"It has no leadership at this time and it could be taken over by a wild silverback."

If that happened, the group would no longer have contact with humans — meaning a major loss in revenue for Uganda.

The Bwindi park makes millions from tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of the endangered animals — and due to the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
, Uganda lost $1.6 billion this year in revenue. Across Africa the tourism sinkhole has created a poaching boom, which scientists warn could fuel more pandemics.

Coronavirus survivor gets whopping $1.1 million hospital bill
[NYPOST] A 70-year-old Seattle man who nearly died from the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
got hit with another shock after he recovered: a $1.1 million hospital bill.

Michael Flor was so sick from COVID-19 that his wife and kids called him to say good-bye.

But he managed to pull through while being treated at Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah, the Seattle Times reported.

Then he got the sky-high bill for his care.

"I opened it and said ’holy [bleep]!’" Flor told the paper.

The invoice, totaling an eye-popping $1,122,501.04, ran 181 pages, including $9,736 for his room in the intensive care unit, plus an extra $408,912 because the space had to be sealed off and staff needed to wear full protective gear.

Many of the charges were for the drugs that kept him alive.

Flor has a Medicare Advantage insurance policy that normally covers all charges after the roughly $6,000 deductible, the paper reported.

Special financial regulations enacted by Congress for COVID-19 patients, however, might keep Flor from paying one red cent, the Seattle Times said.
So then the total amount, shocking as it is if one doesn’t think about the level of treatment he needed, isn’t actually meaningful to him.
Flor said he was surprised by his own reaction to beating the coronavirus.

"I feel guilty about surviving," he said. "There’s a sense of, ’why me?’ Why did I deserve all this? Looking at the incredible cost of it all definitely adds to that survivor’s guilt."

Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 06/14/2020 3:22 Comments || Top||

#5  Hospitals and labs (and Doctors) often inflate their bills.

..cause government refused to pay 'fair market price' (cause you know paying it would balloon up the costs to eat the entire budget and we can't stop talking about free Medicare for everyone if they understood they'd get Caracas healthcare and lifestyle). So they jack up the bill in an effort to make costs.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 06/14/2020 7:27 Comments || Top||

#6  There are several reasons the bill is higher with insurance and hospitals.

First, insurance takes a long time to pay. Small doctor offices can take six months or more to see a payment come in. A lot of time the claim is disputed too before it is resolved and payment comes in. Gotta make up money for that gap and man hours spent fighting for it, hence the larger bill.

Also every department in the hospital has to have their own administrative team due to government regulations.
Main hospital: billing, admissions, insurance
Surgeon: billing, admissions, insurance
Anesthesiologist: billing, admissions, insurance
Radiology: billing, admissions, insurance

Having to duplicate the same work that many times means the bill will be multiplied by that many times.

Phantoms and Tomcats on the prowl...
[The Aviationist] The Tu-95RT Bear-D variant performed a maritime surveillance and over-the-horizon targeting mission for other aircraft, surface ships and submarines. It was identifiable by a large bulge under the fuselage, which reportedly housed a radar antenna that was used to search for and detect surface ships. Decommissioned in the 1990s, they were based at Kipelovo (the base that currently hosts the Russian Naval Aviation Tu-142s). Starting from 1963-1964 as many as 53 Soviet Tu-95RTs performed the tasks of detecting carrier groups in the oceans, and the Soviet 392 ODRAP (separate long-range reconnaissance aviation regiment) was responsible for the Atlantic region. Aircraft were based other than Russia, in Cuba, in Guinea and Angola. Most of the known photos with Tu-95 intercepts are Tu-95RTs belonging to the 392th squadron.

Thanks to Dmitriy Ermolin and the FB page dedicated to Kipelovo airbase he administers, we are able to see the NATO interceptors dispatched to identify and escort the Soviet Bear-D aircraft during their long-range missions (the very same the Bear variants continue to fly nowadays) as seen from the cockpit of the Bears.

Girl killed as Saudi bulldozers demolish family home in Asir
[DAILYTIMES.PK] A Saudi girl has reportedly been killed as bulldozers destroyed her family home in the southern region of Asir.

The child has been identified as Noura from the governorate of Harajah. She died on Wednesday as several bulldozers were ordered to raze buildings alleged to have been constructed without permits.

A report yesterday revealed that Noura was killed while she slept in her home. Images of the slain child and video footage of the demolition circulated on Twitter, with the hashtag "Critical assaults kill the girl Noura" in Arabic being used to highlight the crime.

The incident has led to outrage in the kingdom, with many activists criticising local officials and the urban planning committee, calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

Public Prosecutor Sheikh Saud Bin Abdullah al-Moajab has apparently ordered an investigation into circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

Women perform much worse on IQ tests when they wear a revealing outfit
h/t Hot Air
[Daily Mail] - They are the go-to outfit for many women when they want to feel sexy and self-confident.

But could that favourite little black dress also be damaging to female brain function?

Research has revealed that women perform much worse on tests which measure reaction times and decision-making when they wear something tight and revealing, rather than something loose and comfortable.
Ah, that's why we're able to score!
Researchers from the University of Toronto found women were slower to respond to challenges and made poorer decisions.

#6  Testing conditions are probably incorrect.

I think if you take a bunch of college student volunteers with average bodies, and dress them up in sexy apparel for your test - this would be the result. The brain would be challenged by the social inadequacy being negotiated, and they wont be able to focus on stuff.

Intelligence is one thing, but the general confidence to apply it in a challenging moment comes from prolonged exposure and eventual proficiency in carrying your self.

Have the volunteers work out, get in shape, really fit them in those dresses and then ask them the questions. I'll wager they'll surpass their earlier best scores.

No matter what your stupid study concludes, even as statistic bound shrinks you'll have finally done someone some good.
Posted by: Dron66046 || 06/14/2020 11:00 Comments || Top||

#7  If the results reflect reality, the reason could be as simple as sexy clothes may be less comfortable than loose ones, and the underlying cause for lack of focus is physical discomfort.

Back in the day, one of Mr, Wife’s chemical engineering profs graded on a curve. The first time they had an exam his study partner, who enjoys a decidedly feminine figure, sat down next to him and unbuttoned a few extra buttons to help reshape the results more in her favour. (Engineers — every action has logic behind it.) As the tests were being handed out, my darling lad leaned over and buttoned her up to her chin.

Whether this actually improved the results of the rest of the class, I have no idea.

Home Front: Culture Wars
The Original Minnesota Black Lives Matter Movement
Since Minnesota has been much in the news lately: I was rereading Allen Guelzo's great account of Gettysburg, and was reminded of these guys. 85% casualties on a suicide mission they knew was a suicide mission. An exaggeration to say that they saved the Union, but not by a whole lot. Then again, I'm sure that if one of our soy boys looked hard enough he could find an example of Private Swenson using a bad word before fixing his bayonet.
[Gettysburg.StoneSentinals] The 1st Minnesota Infantry performed one of the most critical actions of the battle during Longstreet’s Assault of July 2nd. Sickles’ Corps was falling back in disarray. Longstreet’s men were advancing to penetrate the center of the Union line, which had been dangerously thinned to prop up other sectors. General Hancock rode up to the 1st Minnesota, the only organized Union troops at hand, pointed at the advancing Confederates, and ordered them to "Take those colors!" Their sacrificial charge against overwhelming odds halted the Confederate advance. It bought desperately needed time for the center of the Union line to reform. the result was that Lee was forced into one last desperate gamble the next day with Pickett’s Charge.

Science
To get in line for 1GB StarLink sat service when it's available in your zip code.
Hit the title to get on the list.

Rural or suburban friends who want giga-bit data service - some estimate at $80/month (who knows?) , can sign up for notification when StarLink service is available in their zip code.

Eventually it should work to RVs, Boats, private airplanes and other like platforms. WiFi in the middle of a national park or on the high seas or in the air would be very nice.

They already have tested to near GB speeds into the cockpits of USAF planes...

Saturday morning they launched another 58 sats so soon they will be close to 1500 sats that would give some service everywhere on the planet. Now its close to 500 sats in orbit and a few less yet to go into service.

I would expect you not to get notified until they have 750 - 850 sats in service.

#1  I am happy to see this work, but $80 / month (or more)? I go to some remote places for outdoor recreation and internet is the last thing I think about when I pack for those trips. I'm reading that the terminal ain't gonna be cheap and initially it will not be something you pack into the wild with you. I hope they can make it cheaper and portable but that won't be happening very soon.

#4  M. Murcek,
Think outside the box.
1) Farmer in his combine cutting corn and trading that crop on the board of trade at the same time.
2) Boater on a yacht in the middle of the Pacific able to access detailed weather, medical info even remotely work from the yacht while enjoying cruising.
3) Protester in Hong Kong able to access the internet outside of China's great data wall.
4) Skyping/Zoom to your relatives/buddies/associates from anywhere on the planet. Or if you have an I'Phone - facetime from the middle of the ocean or a park as the bear eats your family..
5) $80 for GB speed even at home is great. Much cheaper than Comcast or AT&T. My guess long term AT&T and Comcast shrink to city cores. Now think about the politics of this... AT&T owns CNN... Comcast owns NBC, MS-NBC, CNBC .... looks positive to me!
Posted by: 3dc || 06/14/2020 12:06 Comments || Top||

#5  Oh, and Musk, who owns StarLink, considers most of the press firms idiots... Don't expect him to buy CNN, or MS-anything or a newspaper like the Washington Toast... Those will just nose dive further without Sugar Daddies

#6  Come on, I live in a leafy suburb and pay $90 a month for 3mb DSL. This starlink sounds great.

All the hard wired phone companies that bribe the local politicians to keep cable companies out of their town are going to go bankrupt.
Posted by: rammer || 06/14/2020 14:45 Comments || Top||

#7  Yeah, it will probably eat cable internet, but 5G is gonna do that anyway. 5G is the real competition and has the advantage of not losing service because there is bad weather overhead as well not needing ground stations (>$1500 production cost as of now).
Posted by: Knuckles Javimble6283 || 06/14/2020 16:44 Comments || Top||

#8  Echoing Knuckles Javimble6283’s question about major storms — will the satellites be able to punch through weather that so regularly shut down service to DirecTV that we gave it up for whatever we have now.

but 5G is gonna do that anyway.

I was under the impression that we are so close to whatever comes after 5G that we’re going to simply skip over it. Am I wrong?
Posted by: trailing wife || 06/14/2020 16:54 Comments || Top||

#9  Starlink operates in the Ku (12-18GHz) and Ka (27-40Ghz) bands. Ku is what you see w/ DirectTV. Both bands are affected by resonance with water molecules (like your microwave oven). W/o looking at the data, my guess is Ka band is more effected, increases with frequency and requires higher power to punch through clouds.

6G won't arrive for at another 10 years or more and will use Terahertz (>100Ghz) radio waves. Antennas will have to ridiculously close together (atmospheric absorption) and probably not viable for satellite broadcast until you go over 200GHz.

There might be a (call it) 5.5G. Instead of using the Ku band, it could use the Ka band. The gives 2-3 times more bandwidth and with new encoding schemes bypass lots of the Chinese patents on 5G. Hypocritical that the greatest IP pirates of all time are so insistent on royalties on their patents.

#10  Instead of using the Ku band

Instead of using the C (4-8GHz) band
Posted by: Knuckles Javimble6283 || 06/14/2020 18:01 Comments || Top||

#11  Per the FCC approval for the Starlink space stations, "SpaceX proposes to operate in the 10.7-12.7 GHz, 13.85-14.5 GHz, 17.8-18.6 GHz, 18.8-19.3 GHz, 27.5-29.1 GHz, and 29.5-30 GHz bands."
