Indian villagers kill five for 'witchcraft': police
[NEWS.YAHOO] Villagers in a rural part of eastern India have killed five women whom they accused of practising witchcraft, police said Saturday.

Police in eastern Jharkhand state said a group of assailants dragged the women out of their huts and beat them to death at around midnight Friday in Kanjia village, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from state capital Ranchi.

"A group (of villagers) dragged the women out and beat them to death with sticks, accusing them of practising witchcraft," Ranchi deputy police chief Arun Kumar Singh told AFP by phone.

Singh added that 24 villagers have been enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
over the killings of the women, who were mostly aged between 45 and 50.

Jharkhand police front man S.N. Pradhan said the villagers also used stones and knives after blaming the five women for bringing illness, poor crops and bad luck on the village through witchcraft.

Somalia: North Korea-flagged vessel washed up off Eyl coast
EYL, Somalia -- North Korean flagged ship ran aground off the coast of Eyl in northern Somalia with 34 crews on board, Garowe Online reports.

Eyl district commissioner Musse Osman told Puntland-based independent station, Radio Garowe that the fishing vessel registered in Yemen washed up in the sight of Puntland marine forces on Friday. Among the rescued crew members are Indonesian, Vietnamese, Kenyan and Yemeni nationals.

Al Amal is operated by Yemen-based fishing company, Burun Seafood and the crews aboard have been relocated to the state capital, Garowe.

Puntland maritime authorities grant licenses to Yemeni dhows and Korea-flagged ships in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea waters.

In December 2012, impounded North Korean vessel, MV Daesan was captured while dumping cement into Puntland waters.

Many illegal foreign fishing vessels previously came ashore as local fishermen are frustrated with the growing presence of trawlers in the territorial waters.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia destroys piles of banned Western food.
[NYT] MOSCOW -- Ramping up enforcement of a ban on European food imports, the Russian authorities on Thursday destroyed hundreds of tons of foodstuffs they said violated the proscription, instituted a year ago in retaliation for Western sanctions over Ukraine.

Following an order by President Vladimir V. Putin, officials threw huge piles of pork, tomatoes, peaches and cheese into landfills and garbage incinerators.

The frenzy, remarkable even by the standards of Russia's recent politicization of food supplies, was gleefully reported by Russian state television.

"You can see behind me cheese that was made nobody knows where, without labels," Yekaterina Mironova, a journalist on Rossiya 24 television, standing before a gigantic mound of orange cheese rounds, as a bulldozer revved its engine in the background.
Varoom, varoom, clank, clank, clank.
The offending cheese, she said, would be plowed into a landfill in the Belgorod region of western Russia.

News reports chronicled the destruction throughout the day, along the entire breadth of Russia's western border, from Orenburg in the south to St. Petersburg in the north.

#1  The offending cheese,

Yes, you are correct, indeed it would be a pretty good name for a band.

#2  Wow, just wow. Think of the press they could have gotten just dumping the stuff in Caracas these days. So much for socialist solidarity. Meanwhile, the Russian oligarchs simply pay another 'import tax' to the appropriate authority to continue to dine as the rich always do.

#3  Sez Putin, "These small things that please us,
Like steamrolling decadent cheeses,
Must cause no lamenting
Cuz Russian fermenting
Wuz fit for our Orthodox Jesus."

Nothing new for Russia in general, albeit somewhat new for the current gang in charge.

Beretta's fight to arm the military
[Washington Post] ACCOKEEK, Md. -- The letters gave Cpl. Ernest Langdon "freedom of movement" in the Panama Canal Zone.

The United States maintained control of the canal in 1989, when Langdon, a Marine, was stationed there. But as tensions mounted between President George H.W. Bush and Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, Langdon and his comrades were ordered to test the lines of the Panama Defense Forces to see how far those papers would take them.

On patrol in the muggy jungle, Langdon often reached for his pistol, the only weapon he carried, for a pinch of firepower -- just in case. It was a Beretta M9 pistol, standard issue for U.S. servicemembers.

Here in Accokeek, at Beretta's U.S. headquarters, workers kept those M9s rolling off the line, supplying the military long after Noriega was ousted. Production ramped up as U.S. soldiers moved on to the war zones of the Middle East: Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya.

Now, the military says, it's time for a modern handgun for modern warfare. The M9 has long been a sturdy standby when things fall apart in battle -- a defensive weapon. The military wants soldiers to reach for the new gun -- the XM17 -- going into battle.

The military's move to retire the M9 poses a new business challenge for Beretta on top of other change. After 40 years in Maryland, it's moving its manufacturing -- and more than a hundred jobs -- out of the state in response to new gun laws that limit the sale and possession of firearms and threatened its commercial business.

And Beretta is suddenly fighting for a military contract worth $580 million with rivals it normally competes with in gun shops, not in defense contracting: Traditional military suppliers such as Beretta and Colt are facing competition from civilian manufacturers including Glock and Sturm, Ruger & Co.

Commercial handguns are sophisticated enough that the military would ask gunmakers to modify a civilian product to meet battlefield specifications. They're durable, accurate, high-capacity weapons, perhaps giving civilian gunmakers the upper hand for the first time in military contracting history, gun experts say.

#1  The M9 was a NATO solidarity selection. The biggest problem with the old M1911A was the military's habit of keeping old equipment long beyond its normal life span trying to avoid having to buy new replacements.

#2  I carried a 1911 for years. I'd still take one over anything else out there in a combat situation.

#3  The FN Herstal Five-seveN 5.7×28mm is a logical choice. Too bad logical military contracting is an oxymoron.

#4  I wasn't fond of the M9. The ones we had jammed often and weren't very accurate. Also the 9mm had about as much stopping power as a spit wad.

.357SIG or up.

#5  Darth, as I understand it, that is why the M1911 was invented - the pistols the Americans were using at the time didn't have the stopping power needed. When someone was hit by a .45 slug from the M1911, they STOPPED.

#6  M-2 Browning, M1911A1, M-14, some things a close to perfection for the specific task, why can't improvements be to the basic design, not some new, and costly, way to try and compete for effectiveness in killing?

Two DSPs among 25 injured as mob takes on police
[DAWN] A pitched battle between police and protesters left 25 people, including two DSPs, injured near Dolaywala village along Deepalpur Road on Tuesday.

Hundreds of people hailing from Husain Khanwala and other villages demonstrated against police for their alleged failure to smash a gang suspected of raping hundreds of children and extorting money from their parents by blackmailing them through videos.

The gang had been involved in the activity since 2009 and a property dispute brought the issue to surface. Police have registered seven cases against 15 people and nabbed
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
six of them.

The villagers were planning to protest in front of the Lahore Press Club and stage a sit-in near the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Assembly and accordingly announcements were made after the Friday sermons in Husain Khanwala and surrounding villages this past week but the death of a villager caused delay in the plan. Later, the villagers were informed through mobile phones that they would protest against police on Tuesday.

Kasur child molestation scandal baseless, says inquiry report
[DAWN] A high-level inquiry committee formed by the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

government to investigate allegations of authorities' inaction to check instances of child sex abuse and blackmailing by a gang in Husain Khanwala and other villages in Kasur district concluded that reports of child molestation are baseless.
"Nope, nope -- never happened. All those weeping kids walking funny have.... Beri-beri. Very popular round these parts, Beri-beri. Parents infect the kids at special Beri-beri parties, donchaknow. Makes 'em strong, adds twenty points to the IQ, whitens the teeth and adds shine to their hair -- the science is firmly settled on that one."
Senior minister of the Punjab government, Rana Sanaullah, while talking to DawnNews, said the inquiry had concluded that no instance of child sex abuse had been reported, adding that reports to this effect surfaced after two parties involved in a land dispute registered "fake cases" against each other.

Sanaullah said almost eight years ago, incidents of child molestation and videos of such acts to blackmail families had been reported in the area, adding that cases were registered against those involved and the culprits were apprehended.

The provincial minister and PML-N stalwart insisted that the scandal had been created by rival parties who were involved in a fierce land dispute.
