Alvin Greene indicted on felony pr0n charges
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene was indicted by a grand jury in Columbia today on charges he showed pornography to a University of South Carolina freshman months before he became the upset - some say bizarre - winner of the partys nomination in June.

The indictment names two charges against Greene: a felony for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity, and a misdemeanor of communicating obscene materials to someone without consent.

Greene, 32, was arrested in November - long before he first was considered a candidate - when authorities said he approached a female freshman from Summerville in computer lab, showed her obscene photographs that were online, and talked about heading to the womans dorm room.

Reached at his home in Manning by The Post and Courier, Greene declined comment. "My lawyer is dealing with that," he said. Then, seemingly annoyed at media phone calls, he blurted "Thats it," before hanging up.

His attorney Eleazer Carter of Columbia, said this afternoon he had not been formally told of the indictment by the Solicitors Office but that he was not surprised to hear it was coming. "I probably suspected that it would be," he said.

Japanese probe as 200 centenarians missing
[The Nation (Nairobi)] Nearly 200 Japanese centenarians are missing, officials said today, with the total likely to rise amid a nationwide search after the discovery of the 30-year-old corpse of a man registered as aged 111.

In the western city of Kobe alone, the whereabouts of 105 out of 847 centenarians were unknown as of the end of July, a city official said.

"The city launched an investigation on the condition of the 105 people," the Kobe city official said -- in addition to 22 others who have not accessed nursing or medical insurance in recent years.

Those unaccounted-for include people who would be older than the current officially recognised oldest woman in Japan, 113-year-old Chiyono Hasegawa, who lives in southern Saga prefecture.

They include one supposedly 125-year-old woman.

The sheer number of missing has raised fears that Japan's current welfare system could be easily exploited by relatives, after officials visiting Sogen Kato on his 111th birthday instead found his mummified, 30 year-old remains.

Police are investigating the late Kato's relatives -- who claimed he had retreated to his room to become "a living Buddha" -- for fraud because the government had kept paying a pension into the man's bank account. A total of 9.5 million yen (109,000 dollars) in widower's pension payments had been deposited since his wife died six years ago, and some of the money had recently been withdrawn, reports said.

Local government officials have fanned out for face-to-face meetings with people registered as aged over 100 -- of whom fast-greying Japan, with its world-beating life expectancies, had more than 40,000 at last count.

In city of Osaka, 64 out of 857 centenarians are currently missing. Officials today confirmed that a man who was registered as being 127 had been dead since 1966.

A government report said in July that Japan's average life expectancy set a world-best 86.44 years for women while men's average life expectancy came fifth globally with 79.59 years.

When asked if the report could affect the expectancy rate, a health ministry official said the rate is calculated using national census data as local authorities keep records on centenarians.

US arrests suspected Palestinian serial killer
[Ma'an] Police in the United States have a Palestinian citizen of Israel in custody in connection with a string of stabbings that left as many as five dead, The Detroit Free Press newspaper reported Thursday.

US officials suspect Elias Abuelazam, 33, is responsible for stabbing attacks across three states that left some 20 people injured.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday evening at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while boarding a Delta Airlines flight to Tel Aviv, Israel, airport and airline officials told the newspaper.

Abuelazam, identified late Thursday in the Israeli media as an Israeli national from Ramle, was arrested after "one of the tips developed into a strong investigative lead," a US police spokesman said.

A Michigan prosecutor told The Associated Press that a knife and hammer were discovered in a vehicle driven by the suspect, who is being held in custody on assault charges related to a 27 July stabbing.

Arab-American community 'shocked'

Mona Sahouri, executive director for the American Arab Heritage Council in Flint, where some 15 people were stabbed, said news about Abuelazam's arrest spread quickly among American Arabs.

"Our community is pretty tight knit," she told the Flint Journal. "This is the first time I've heard of his name."

"Our community is extremely shocked and upset and extends deep condolences to the families of the victims of these horrible crimes," she added, saying the Arab community "strongly condemns" such actions.

Abuelazam "is not representative of the Arab American community here," she added.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Kids Take Joyride by Southwest Air to Nashville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Bored on a hot summer day, three Florida youngsters were just sitting around when one sent a text message to another with an adventurous idea.

''Hey do you want to go 2 Tennessee today,'' the message read.

''Sure,'' the other responded.

Not even old enough to get a driver's license, they took a taxi to the airport Tuesday, bought tickets with baby-sitting money and -- unbeknownst to their parents, the three (ages 15, 13 and 11) -- boarded a Southwest Airlines flight from Jacksonville to Nashville, according to a TV news account of the incident.

Nobody asked a question. Nobody asked for identification.
Looks like a few more holes in air travel security need to be plugged

Feel Good Pics of the Day - More about W & Laura's Surprise Visit
Click for more pictures of Bush with the troops — you will smile and have a "glad I did that" moment
Troops arriving home on August 11, 2010 were greeted by a few surprise visitors — Former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. All photos were taken by Welcome Home a Hero volunteer Joe Schneider.

"We didn't tell them at all what was going on," said the leader of the welcoming group, Lt. Col. Patrick McAfee. "It was shock and awe when they walked in the double doors."

Most of the returning service members are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A spokesman for Bush, David Sherzer, said they were "honored" to take part in the welcome. "President Bush often says that he doesn't miss much about being the President, but he does miss being the Commander in Chief of an incredible group of men and women", he said.

"It was a remarkable, incredible feeling for them, seeing the former commander in chief taking time to greet them," McAfee said.

Bush handed each of the service members his commander-in-chief coin and posed for pictures for everyone. Photos from the event showed the surprise on the faces of many of the troops.

"For the first time in my life, I was star struck," McAfee said. "He obviously still loves the military."

The Bushes joined with more than 30 youth football players through the Slant 45 organization to take part in the ceremony. The group is part of the Super Bowl community program in advance of the 2011 Super Bowl at Arlington, Texas.

"It was just a great lift of our spirits" for the welcoming committee, McAfee said. The group welcomes troops home whenever their flights return, no matter the hour. "We sometimes have people in pajamas and robes in the middle of the night."

Radioactive wild boars menace Germany
Charles Hawley, Der Spiegel Online

It's no secret that Germany has a wild boar problem. Stories of marauding pigs hit the headlines with startling regularity....
Stoppt jemand bitte die Verrücktheit? (Won't somebody stop the madness?)
Even worse, though, almost a quarter century after the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in Ukraine, a good chunk of Germany's wild boar population remains slightly radioactive....
Das würde erklären, warum mein Speck in die Dunkelheit glüht. (That would explain why my bacon glows in the dark.)
According to the Environment Ministry in Berlin, almost €425,000 ($555,000) was paid out to hunters in 2009 in compensation for wild boar meat that was too contaminated by radiation to be sold for consumption....
Mein Gott, jene radioaktiven Schweine sind teuer! (My God, those radioactive pigs are expensive!)
Government compensation payments to hunters remain a small part of the €238 million recompense the German government has shelled out for damages relating to Chernobyl since reactor IV exploded on April 26, 1986. Furthermore, there is some relief in sight. Even as wild boar continue to show a fondness for making the headlines, the recent hard winter has had its effect on population numbers. So far this year, Berlin has only had to pay out €130,000 for radioactive boar.

Man Cheated out of Darwin Award
Another Great Moment in the History of White Trash...
On Thursday morning a report by Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg said Barry Painter Sr., 38, was intoxicated and playing with a venomous western Gaboon viper at a home in Cumberland County when he was bitten.

Painter's sister, Jessica Painter, contends that her brother was not intoxicated and that he always handed the viper with care.

"My brother did not play with the snake, he knew not to. He signed waivers when he bought this snake, knowing it could kill him," she said.

Her brother is employed as a tattoo artist at Drop of Ink Tattoo in Shippensburg, Jessica Painter said. Lately he had been keeping the snake at his friend's Southampton Township home, 46 Walnut Dale Road.

She said he is engaged to be married, and has five children, ages 2-15.

He had the snake for about five years, having raised it since it was about 4 inches long, she said. Although he had a number of snakes and other animals in the past, the viper was his only current pet.

Asked what her brother named his snake, Jessica Painter said he affectionately referred to the animal as "his (expletive)."

On Wednesday night he "reached down into the snake's cage like he normally does" to change its bedding when it suddenly bit him twice on the hand, she said.

Peru battles rabid vampire bats after 500 people bitten
Fire up the movie script generator!
Peru's health ministry has sent emergency teams to a remote Amazon region to battle an outbreak of rabies spread by vampire bats.
Not just bats, not just vampire bats, but Rabid Vampire Bats!
Four children in the Awajun indigenous tribe died after being bitten by the bloodsucking mammals.
Indigenous third world children at risk, we can make millions!
Health workers have given rabies vaccine to more than 500 people who have also been attacked.
No doubt valiant progressive caring health workers, maybe we can cast Sean Penn as a doctor.
Some experts have linked mass vampire bat attacks on people in the Amazon to deforestation.
...by heartless Republican owned companies causing Global Warming!
The rabies outbreak is focused on the community of Urakusa in the north-eastern Peruvian Amazon, close to the border with Ecuador. The indigenous community appealed for help after being unable to explain the illness that had killed the children.

The health ministry said it had sent three medical teams to treat and vaccinate people who had been bitten.
Let's see, we'll need a handsome young biologist and a beautiful reporter looking into a coverup of ....something. I wonder if Brad and Angelina are busy?
Most of the affected population had now been vaccinated, it said, although a few had refused treatment.

Vampire bats usually feed on wildlife or livestock, but are sometimes known to turn to humans for food, particularly in areas where their rainforest habitat has been destroyed.
...by Haliburton on the personal orders of Dick Cheney!
Some local people have suggested this latest outbreak of attacks may be linked to the unusually low temperatures the Peruvian Amazon in recent years.
Well, we can't mention that.

China-Japan-Koreas
Will retaliate if offended by US, warns China Gen
A Chinese General on Friday termed as "flagrant provocation" US plans to send a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Yellow Sea and said the country would retaliate if "offended".

"A country needs respect, so does a military. We will retaliate if we are offended," Major General Luo Yuan, deputy secretary-general of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Academy of Military Sciences, wrote in an editorial in the PLA Daily.

The US is "pushing its security boundary to the doorstep of others -- the Yellow Sea, South China Sea and so on," Luo said.

China had in the recent weeks voice its firm opposition to activities of foreign military vessels or planes in the Yellow Sea and China's coastal waters, saying they undermine it security interests. Despite China's warning, the US insists on sending the carrier 'USS George Washington', he said.

The General was reacting to remarks by Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, that the carrier will always go into international waters.

China is developing a new missile called Dong Feng 21D, that could supposedly penetrate the defenses of even the most advanced aircraft carrier at a distance of more than 1,500 km if they can find it.

Europe
New EU Ambassador to Washington Asserts He, Not Their Ambassadors, Speaks For All EU Nations
Joao Vale de Almeida was this week formally installed as the EU's ambassador to the US, and suggested that American officials should regard him as their first point of contact for transatlantic discussions.

He is the first EU ambassador to be appointed after the controversial Lisbon Treaty gave the EU sweeping new powers. The new ambassador claimed to now be "leading the show" among European representatives in Washington.

The prospect of an EU official speaking for the UK to its most important ally has angered eurosceptics, who said it shows Britain's waning influence.

Mr Vale de Almeida's comments are also likely to alarm Sir Nigel Sheinwald, the British ambassador in Washington. Sir Nigel is thought to have struggled to build strong relations with the White House after a memorandum he wrote for Gordon Brown questioning Barack Obama's experience was leaked in 2008.

Mr Vale de Almeida has stressed to Washington officials and politicians that under the EU's' Lisbon Treaty, he has more power than his predecessors. "I'm the first new type of ambassador for the European Union anywhere in the world," he said. "I'm supposed to have a wider mandate than my predecessors."

Mr Vale de Almeida said: "Our delegations now cover a wide spectrum of issues well beyond the economic dimension, trade dimension and regulatory dimension, to cover all policies in the union, including foreign policy and security policy."

The Lisbon Treaty took force last year, taking the EU another step closer towards acting as a single entity in international affairs. The treaty created a European president and foreign minister and gave EU diplomats new powers to speak for all 27 union members on many issues.

In a comment that has come to symbolise the American view of the EU, Henry Kissinger, the former US secretary of state, is once said to asked: "When I want to talk to Europe, who do I call?"

In a response to that question, Mr Vale de Almeida declared: "In this area code, you call me." The ambassador insisted that he did not wish to "impose myself" on member states' ambassadors, who will continue to oversee "bilateral matters." But he declared: "Where we have a common position, I am the one leading the show."

The Lisbon treaty has led some politicians to suggest that the EU should take the place of countries like Britain and France at international bodies including the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.

Mr Vale de Almeida, who is Portuguese, is one of the European Commission's longest serving officials. He was previously chief of staff to José Manuel Barroso, the Commission's president. Before leaving for Washington, the new ambassador was the most senior official under Baroness Ashton, the foreign-affairs commissioner.

The Earl of Dartmouth, a UK Independence Party MEP, said the ambassador's comments where proof that the EU diplomatic service is usurping the powers of nation states.

He said: "All the other parties have supported or accept the domination of the EU through the Lisbon Treaty. And this is the result. The British Government will be left discussing how British actors are portrayed in Hollywood at best." He added: "Of course Britain will continue to pay for the privilege. This is only the start, as the existence of Britain's permanent seat on the UN Security Council is already in the EU sights".

#1  Isn't France on the security council as well?

So the EU will effectively have *two* seats.

While India and Japan are still left out in the cold.

Macon Pastor Arrested After Anti-'Demon' Protest
A pastor arrested Monday for protesting Warner Robins High School's "Demon" nickname and mascot says he was just standing up for Jesus — and he'd do it again.

Pastor Donald Crosby said the school's demon logo just encourages children to evil. "I don't scare easily. Lock me up as many times as you have to lock me up. Even kill me if you have to. I'm standing up for Jesus."

He criticized other Christians who, he says, are singing in church while their children are being taught to praise demons. "Demons aren't lazy, Christians are," he said.

Warner Robins police spokeswoman Tabitha Pugh says the 36-year-old Crosby was arrested after police told him he didn't have a picketing permit, as required by the city. Crosby and the group protested outside the school on the opening day of classes.

Warner Robins police say they tried to work with the pastor to make the protest legal. Pugh said, "Our officers asked him several times, it wasn't just once, several times to leave the property and go and obtain a permit, to say they can legally and lawfully protest."

She says officers asked Crosby and the group to leave. Crosby refused and was arrested, she says. Pugh says Crosby is charged with picketing without a permit and disorderly conduct for not leaving when asked. Crosby was released from the Houston County jail on bond.

Greg Green says he was dropping his daughter off for the first day of classes at Rumble Academy around 7:10 a.m. when he saw about 30 protesters outside the front of the high school. Green says some of the signs said things like, "Demons don't like me, because I'm Christian", and "Home games will have to be played in hell."

Islam's answer to MTV
The Egyptian entrepreneur Ahmed Abu Haiba isn't having a good day. A Saudi columnist has accused him of corrupting the country's youth. A music video he has been working on for months is behind schedule. He hasn't had time to prepare for his weekly talk show, an Islamo-Egyptian version of "Dr Phil."

Worse, one of the program's financiers has become upset because there was to be a woman on the show — unchaste behavior, to some. We're driving along Sheik Zayed Road in the desert outside Cairo on a bright day as the radio plays Sami Yusuf, a saccharine-sweet Muslim pop star based in London. Abu Haiba theatrically throws his arms in the air to perform his frustration. At the age of 42 he is tubby and, as a sign of his deep faith, has a large zabiba — a dark smudge on his forehead born of rubbing his head repeatedly on a prayer mat. And yet he is not a conventional man and certainly not a conventional Muslim. Today he looks more like a hip-hop mogul, with a black knit golf cap on backward and a suit of all black. And a pink tie.

As the brains behind 4Shbab, the world's first Islamic version of MTV, Abu Haiba is the consummate man in the middle — situated between the dictates of Islam and those of the pop-music business. Introduced in the spring of last year, 4Shbab, which means "for youth" in Arabic, broadcasts music videos, variety shows (including Abu Haiba's own), news and even a reality program called "Your Voice Is Heard" — which might as well be called "Who Wants to be an Islamic Pop Star?" Imagine MTV without the gratuitous gyration and skin, and with videos about family, dawa public service, Palestine and, above all, ululation salvation.

#1  He should have off-shored his production, and just rebroadcast it in country. This would mean that if the government didn't like it, it could only ban rebroadcast in country, but it could still be seen by satellite.

Science & Technology
Using CO2 Improves Oil Sand Process
A new technique that uses carbon dioxide to change the water chemistry of its tailings to accelerate settling has significantly cut the amount of Athabasca River water needed by Canadian Natural Resources' Horizon oilsands plant. Since the system became fully operational for all tailings this winter "the amount of water we are withdrawing is only 13 to 14 per cent of what we were expected to draw from the river for our process on a daily basis," CNRL president Steve Laut told The Journal.

Using CO2, tailings silt separates much faster "and we are able to get that water back into the system, so we are recycling almost all our water," Laut said.

"We are the only oilsands plant with a commercial-sized process in place. This went from our lab right to the plant last August," she said. After a few months of adjustments, the system was working smoothly.

"We are really excited, but it has been frustrating because we have been trying to tell people about it and all everyone wants to talk about is what (oilsands producers) are going to be doing (in the future). But we are doing this now."
Sorry, babe; it's not on the One's agenda.
Based on research from the federal CanmetENERGY lab in Devon, Canada CNRL concluded that CO2 - which all oilsands plants emit when they make hydrogen needed to upgrade bitumen - would work.

When CO2 reacts with the water, the pH goes from alkaline to neutral. "And when we do that, the fines (clay particles) settle out and we get nice, clean recycled water," Romero said.

She uses the analogy of dust-attracting cleaning devices sold to consumers. "These static dust cleaners are picking up dust, which has (an electrical) charge. The clay particles in the tailings also have a charge. This is not rocket science," she said.

CNRL is currently testing its tailings pond, taking water samples at various levels and core samples in the bottom sand and clay to assess the fines captured using CO2.

Sequestering CO2 in the clays could yield carbon credits in the future.
A win-win scenario!

#1  I understand using CO2 is not new to the oil industry. I heard they were pumping CO2 into the wells in Texas and it helps the oil seperate from the sand and rock.

#2  Sequestering CO2 in the clays could yield carbon credits in the future.

This technology has nothing to do with CO2 sequestration.

Further, reducing the PH of water is bad for fish and invertebrates.

The usual pandering to Greenie ignorance.

Illinois Town Dumps Plan to be Clean Energy Dump
Mattoon, Ill., has backed out of the $1.2 billion FutureGen project after it learned from federal officials that the town would not host the flagship clean-coal plant itself, but would merely be used as an underground carbon dioxide dump piped in from another location. Government officials said the town's decision would not significantly affect the broader FutureGen project.
The original FutureGen project, launched by the George W. Bush administration in 2003, was originally supposed to demonstrate that carbon dioxide pumped out of a coal-burning power plant could be captured and stored at reasonable cost.

But the Bush administration canceled the Mattoon project in 2008 after cost overruns. The project's backers had anticipated that Obama would give the "clean coal" plant another lease on life.
So they can still blame Bush!

Students’ Understanding Of The Equal Sign Not Equal
Texas A&M University researchers have found that not fully understanding the “equal sign” in a math problem could be a key to why U.S. students underperform their peers from other countries in math. “Students who have learned to memorize symbols and who have a limited understanding of the equal sign will tend to solve problems such as 4+3+2=( )+2 by adding the numbers on the left, and placing it in the parentheses, then add those terms and create another equal sign with the new answer,” he explains. “So the work would look like 4+3+2=(9)+2=11.
When questioned about this alarming finding, leading US experts in math teaching said, "D'oh!" They said the solution was to grant teachers tenure and increase their future pensions.
