-Lurid Crime Tales-
Child molester stabbed to death in home invasion
A registered sex offender was stabbed to death in his Holly Township home early Sunday morning by an intruder, Michigan State Police said.

Dennis McCarthy, 65, rushed to the back door of his home on Riviera Shores after his wife spotted someone breaking in around 4 a.m. and screamed for his help, according to investigators. McCarthy was stabbed as he was fighting with the intruder.

McCarthy's wife, who wasn't harmed, performed first aid on him and called 911. He was rushed to Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, where he died, police said. An autopsy by the Oakland County medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide. "At this point, we do not believe this crime is a random act of violence," State Police Detective Sgt. Gary Muir said in a statement. Police would not comment on whether McCarthy was targeted because of his sex-offender status.

The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry lists a 64-year-old Dennis McCarthy who lives on the same road as being convicted in September of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person younger than 13.

The killer is described as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-8 with a stocky build and brown hair, wearing a dark blue hooded shirt.
Elsewhere...
Just one week after being released from jail, a convicted child molester was stabbed to death in his Holly Township home Sunday. Police believe McCarthy knew his attacker.

McCarthy served one year in jail after admitting he sexually molested his own 4-year-old grandson.
And Elsewhere Still
Detectives say the suspect made a comment about McCarthy being a registered sex offender. State records show McCarthy pled guilty last September to 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child. Police say they haven't received many tips, so they are following up with family members and those involved in previous cases involving McCarthy.

#1  "McCarthy served one year in jail after admitting he sexually molested his own 4-year-old grandson."

One YEAR? Should have been one lifetime.

I also noticed his wife was still living with him. I've got a opinion on that, too, but I don't want to get sink-trapped. >:-(

#2  The fundamental responsibility of government is to provide security in one's person, one's family, and one's property. When government is unwilling or unable to perform this function to the satisfaction of the citizenry, they will find other sources that will provide it. Long time ago, prisons were expanded as a 'humane' alternative to the usual punishment - death. Something that people, whether in the high position of government officials or local judges, have forgotten. When destructive anti-social behaviors are rationalized away, the state erodes the compact between it and the people and with it the authority to have a monopoly on what many people consider justice.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Malaysia frees woman scheduled for caning
A Malaysian model, who was set to become the first woman caned in the southeast Asian country for drinking beer in public, was inexplicably spared her sentence Monday, her father said.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was inexplicably spared her sentence for drinking beer in public.

Authorities had picked up Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, from her father's house Monday morning and were taking her to a prison in the eastern state of Pahang when the van turned around and brought her back.

"They sent her back to the house. They said the top official asked them not to bring her to Kuala Lumpur," said Kartika's father, Shukarno Abdul Muttalib.

It was not immediately known whether authorities had dropped the sentence or postponed it. It was also not clear who had ordered Kartika returned.
Check her knees.
"Now I am frightened and I am going to the police station to make a report," the father said. "I don't want them to say that Kartika ran away when they came here. I want them to know she was returned."

Kartika refused to get out of the van until her release had been confirmed in writing.
Hmm. Better check her elbows, too.
An Islamic, or sharia, court in the eastern state of Pahang had fined Kartika -- a Muslim -- $1,400 (5,000 Malaysian ringgit) and sentenced her to six strokes with a rattan cane for drinking at a hotel bar two years ago.

Kartika, a 32-year-old part-time barbeque cover model and mother of two, was visiting Malaysia from Singapore at the time.

She pleaded guilty, paid the fine, and wanted her caning to be carried out in public.

She said she lost her job as a nurse in Singapore and took up modeling to support her husband in raising their children. Her 7-year-old son has cerebral palsy; her 5-year-old daughter, a heart condition.

"I want to move on. This case has been hanging over me for a long time," she told CNN last week.

On Monday morning, Kartika hugged her children, bade a tearful goodbye to the throngs of people gathered at her father's house, and boarded the van.

She was to be taken to a prison on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. The caning would have been carried out within seven days after that, making her the first woman to be caned in Malaysia under sharia law.

Kartika's punishment is unique in that she has opted to go through with it. Two other Malaysians sentenced to the same fate have filed appeals, the Syariah (Sharia) Lawyers' Association of Malaysia said.

The case drew widespread attention and condemnation, in and outside Malaysia.

The moderate Muslim country has a dual-track justice system, in which Islamic courts operate alongside civil courts.

Muslims -- who make up about 60 percent of the 28 million who populate the country -- are forbidden from consuming alcohol. Other religious groups are exempt.
Neener neener! Betcha wish you wouldn't be killed for converting away from Islam right about now!
Though caning is used as a supplementary punishment in Malaysia for at least 40 crimes, such as rape or immigration violations, it is not meted out by Malaysia's civil court for alcohol consumption.

But the country's civil system also cannot overrule a sharia court sentence.

In that respect, Kartika would have been the first woman to be caned for violating the country's religious laws.

"Regardless of whether or not such penalties fall under sharia law or civil law, we believe that these should be repealed, as they go against the fundamental human right to be free from torture and violence," said Haslinah Yaacob, vice president for the All Women's Action Society.
Who knew? Muslims must have liberals, too!

If Muslim women there ever start voting their interests, sharia will become the third rail of politics in Malaysia - anyone who even talks about implementing it is finished in politics.

#3  I vacationed in Vietnam in 1993, after it had JUST opened up to US tourists. It was a rather poor country by modern standards, but the locals were very gracious and friendly. Accommodations were spartan, and the food was marginal, but I was young and didn't mind. BEAUTIFUL women! The culture still seemed very "soviet" in many aspects, but they value tourist dollars and I always felt safe. Never noticed any government "handlers" following me around. Saigon had a bit of Bangkok's wild, freewheeling character, while Hanoi was much more quiet and "buttoned-down". I recommend it for any hearty traveler.

#4  Vietnam is where China was ten years ago. Communism is dead, but they still pay homage to their elder communism's for the sake of face. It's a game of cat and mouse between the old guard and the new guard. Most of the population is so capitalistic it's frightening. The women are beautiful and liberated, They are only waiting for the old guard to die off. What I find interesting is that the Chinese mimic white yanks, Vietnamese mimic the black culture. It's funny to watch end of day ceremonies lauding the fall of Saigon with break dance contests.
As for the tourist seaside resorts, they are the best bargain in the world. Only problem is don't venture out in the countryside after dark, that's when the gangsters take over.
The cities are safe, at least that's what I think, but the Vietnamese say diffident.

#5  P.J. O'Rourke had an interesting take on Vietnam in the last chapter of his book, All The Trouble In The World, entitled, “The Hell with Everything, Let’s Get Rich”. He concluded that, other than talk politics, Vietnam had become a capitalistic "Wild West".

Though he observed that Hanoi has redeveloped into a jewel of a city, but Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), was still a decaying and crummy place, where corruption was rife and the people surly.

#7  Went three years ago on a milspec tour with the golden brigade 82nd. Hanoi sucked, but Hue, Da Nang and Saigon were good. Accomodations excellent, food not so good, transportation good, people freindly, Tiger beer better than "33". Emotional trip since we went to alot of the old battle grounds: friends lost, ghosts in the mist, ptsd stuff coming alive, but all in all worth every minute.

Saudi king orders release of 17 political prisoners
Saudi Arabia will this week free 17 political prisoners from the Ismaili community, sources said on Monday, in a new sign of easing tensions with the minority group living near the border with Yemen. King Abdullah has ordered the release of the predominantly young Ismailis about six months before the end of their 10-year jail sentence as part of a broader royal pardon for hundreds of inmates in the kingdom at the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, the sources said.

Honduras confines Venezuelan, Argentine diplomats to embasssies
(Xinhua) -- The interim Honduras government has confined Venezuelan and Argentine diplomats to their embassies in the country and threatened to expel them once they stepped out the gate, the Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. The restriction is a result of the diplomats' refusal to leave Honduras before the Friday deadline set by the interim government.

The ministry said in a statement that police would arrest the diplomats once they left the embassies and deport them afterwards. Mario Fortin, adviser with the Honduran Foreign Ministry, urged the diplomats to leave the country immediately.

The expulsion order issued on Aug. 18 by the interim government to demand the departure of Argentine diplomats was a response to Argentina's expulsion of Honduran ambassador. The Venezuelan government also received such an ultimatum, but both countries did not recognize the legitimacy of the post-coup Honduran regime and rejected its expulsion order.

On June 28, a judicial order military coup ousted President Zelaya and an interim government led by Roberto Micheletti was established, causing massive demonstrations.

Honduras high court threatens Zelaya with arrest
Honduras's Supreme Court has rejected a Costa Rica-brokered deal that would have restored ousted President Manuel Zelaya to power and sternly warned that he faces arrest if he returns. In a ruling late Saturday that fell in line with similar pronouncements by the military-backed government regime, the high court said that Zelaya will not be allowed to return to power, and "cannot avoid having to submit to established procedures of the penal process" should he return to Honduras.

Zelaya was ousted from power in a June 28 military-backed judicial order coup and replaced with interim president leader Roberto Micheletti.

The court decision also accused Zelaya of "crimes against the government, treason against the nation, abuse of power" and other misdeeds, as it affirmed the legitimacy of Micheletti's government. Micheletti's government had been installed as part of a lawful "constitutional succession," the high court found.

The ruling may signal the death knell for the proposal mediated by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias that called for Zelaya to return to power, an amnesty for political crimes, and early elections. Under this agreement Micheletti would return to his pre-coup post as speaker of Honduras's parliament.

Zelaya was originally elected as a moderate conservative but took a sharp turn to the left while in office, aligning himself with Venezuela's socialist leader Hugo Chavez and Bolivia's Evo Morales. Elected in 2006 for a non-renewable four-year term, Zelaya was ousted after forging ahead with controversial plans to hold a referendum to change the constitution so that he could extend his stay in office.

The country's top court previously ruled the move was illegal, and backed the bloodless coup during which Zelaya was bundled in his pajamas onto a plane bound for Costa Rica.

The latest ruling comes on the eve of the planned arrival in Honduras Monday of a delegation of foreign ministers from Organization of American State countries. The delegation was hoping to negotiate a solution to the succession crisis gripping the impoverished Central American country.

It was not immediately clear whether the weekend high court ruling would affect their plans. The foreign ministers, whose mission has faced delays for the past two weeks, planned to meet Monday and Tuesday with interim Honduran officials. The delegation, led by OAS Secretary General Miguel Insulza, was to include diplomatic chiefs from Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Lieberman to Alec Baldwin: 'Make my day'
(CNN) -- Former Democrat Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut has a simple message for Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin: bring it on.

Asked Sunday on CNN's State of the Union about Baldwin's recent comments that he might move to Connecticut and mount a challenge to Lieberman because, as Baldwin told Playboy magazine, "I have no use for [Lieberman]," the Independent senator responded, "You know, make my day."

"I respect Alec Baldwin as an actor and as a comedian," added Lieberman, "if he wants to run, that's his right."

Lieberman has a track record of surviving tough election battles. After his strong support of George W. Bush's decision to wage war in Iraq made him a target of liberal bloggers and activists, Lieberman lost the Democratic Senate primary in his state in 2006. Undaunted, the longtime senator decided to run as an independent and managed to hold on to seat. He is not up for re-election again until 2012.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel hits back over Swedish organ harvesting article
Israel on Sunday withheld the press credentials of a Swedish newspaper in retaliation for a controversial piece that suggested the Israeli army kidnapped and killed young Palestinians to harvest their organs.
I'm willing to bet the dipweed was sort of counting on that.
The journalists need the credentials to report from Gaza.

"We have no duty to supply them with press cards immediately; (we) have 90 days to decide about their status," said Danny Siman, the head of the government press office.
How about "Persona Non-Grata"?
The article, "Our sons are being stripped of their organs," appeared Tuesday in Aftonbladet and was an opinion piece written by freelance journalist Donald Bostrom.
Why not arrest the guy, strip him of his organs, and leave him on blocks by the side of the road? Or maybe just tell him you're going to do it and tape his reaction. I'd love to see him tell the Israelis to go pound sand. That would tell you how much he believed his own article.
Bostrom told CNN he had no proof that Israeli soldiers were stealing organs, and that the purpose of his piece was to call for an investigation into numerous claims in the 1990s that such activity was going on in the West Bank and Gaza.
Claims by anonymous Palestinians, no doubt.
Even though the Swedish embassy distanced itself from the report, the country's foreign ministry refused to condemn it -- saying Sweden has a "free press."
Well, they do after all. I wouldn't expect any president to run around apologizing for every idiot journalist like this one. There are too many.
The refusal has rankled Israel, which said it will submit an official complaint.

"This is an anti-Semitic blood libel against the Jewish people and the Jewish state. The Swedish government cannot remain apathetic," said Israel's Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz.

"We know the organs origins of these claims. In medieval times, there were claims that the Jews use the blood of Christians to bake their Matzas for Passover. The modern version now is that the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldiers use organs of Palestinians to make money."

He continued: "It makes no difference whether this comes from a neo-Nazi organization or from an honorable newspaper. The Swedish government must renounce itself from this anti-Semitic publication."

The article centers around the case of Bilal Ahmed Ghanem, a 19-year-old Palestinian man who was shot and killed in 1992, allegedly by Israeli forces, in the West Bank village of Imatin.

Bostrom, who witnessed the man's killing, said Ghanem was taken away by Israeli forces while he was still mortally wounded. His body was returned five days later with a cut in his midsection that had been stitched up.

Ghanem's family said they believed that his organs had been removed.
Brilliant. Effing brilliant. Can't argue with logic like that.
After that incident, at least 20 Palestinian families told Bostrom that they suspected the Israeli military had taken the organs of their sons after they had been killed by Israeli forces and their bodies taken away -- presumably for routine autopsies.

Bostrom said he balanced those claims in his article by including a reaction from an Israeli military spokesman who told him that the Israel Defense Forces routinely carries out autopsies on Palestinians killed by their troops.

But, as he stated in his article, Bostrom said he has doubts about the necessity of the procedures if it is clear how the person died.
Because every now and then you get surprised. Such as finding out that the guy was shot by a Hamas gunman or whatever else their twisted minds seem to rationalize in the name of defaming the evil Joooos!
Last week Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman compared the Swedish Foreign Ministry's hands-off position to the country's neutrality during World War II.

"It's a shame that the Swedish Foreign Ministry fails to intervene in a case of blood libels against Jews," Lieberman told Sweden's ambassador to Israel on Thursday evening. "This is reminiscent of Sweden's stand during World War II, when [it] had failed to intervene as well."

what's embarrassing is that run-of-the-mill autopsies was the first thing that came to my mind whne I first read about paleos families believing in "organ theft" because of "stiched up torso cuts"... wasn't it T-shaped, by any chance? Israel to sell Spyder missiles to India
Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has signed a $ 1 billion deal to sell surface-to-air missiles to the Indian Armed Forces. Under the deal, Israel will supply India with 18 Spyder mobile missile systems by 2012, Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday.

In 2008, Israel took over from Russia as the main weapons exporter to India. The self-propelled missile could be launched within two minutes after a target is declared hostile by the system.

According to the Times of India, the deal has been held up for several months due to allegations that Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Rafael had given kickbacks to officials in New Delhi.
