Ballistics shows NYPD hit 9 bystanders to down 1 Krazed Killer

#1  Well, Nanny Mike. Might wanna put away that "only the cops should have guns" screed for awhile...
Posted by: tu3031 || 08/26/2012 0:04 Comments || Top||

#2  Next we'll be hearing from Mikey and his ilk that the bystanders weren't really 'shot' shot, they were just unlucky, and the body has natural defenses against such things.
Posted by: Whiskey Mike || 08/26/2012 3:01 Comments || Top||

#3  Cop or civilian, does not matter who handles the weapon:

You are responsible for the final resting place of every round you fire.
Posted by: Alaska Paul || 08/26/2012 4:10 Comments || Top||

#4  From what I've read many of the 9 were wounded by shrapnel from riccochets off the building and sidewalks, not that that's an excuse.

The number of rounds fired to down the guy was excessive AND the article also said that the gunman never fired at the police.

Police shooting him fine. The way they did? Not so much.
Posted by: AlanC || 08/26/2012 9:29 Comments || Top||

#5  Serious lack of fundamental [weapons skill] training. Dollars to donuts, probably a lot of penciling in of range and situational training.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 08/26/2012 10:58 Comments || Top||

#6  The number of rounds fired to down the guy was excessive…

In a lethal force situation there’s no such thing as an “excessive number of rounds”. Now the accuracy of said rounds…(?)
Posted by: DepotGuy || 08/26/2012 10:58 Comments || Top||

#7  DG, that's kind of what I meant. I'm all for making sure but I'd a thought that 4 or 5 rounds, center mass, from 8 ft. should have dropped the guy, no?
Posted by: AlanC || 08/26/2012 11:23 Comments || Top||

#8  Bottom line: The shooter will no longer be a problem to anyone. The cops and bystanders survived to see their families and loved ones again. Unemployment figures dropped one digit, and there are two new positions at the bag factory.
Posted by: Besoeker || 08/26/2012 11:30 Comments || Top||

#9  Well, that's the thing with a "wonder nine." Pull the trigger a bunch of times and wonder where the bullets went...
Posted by: M. Murcek || 08/26/2012 12:02 Comments || Top||

#10  Well, Nanny Mike.

Were the bystanders carrying more than 16 ounces of soft drinks?
Posted by: Pappy || 08/26/2012 13:40 Comments || Top||

#11  two had MSG and a third had a shaker of salt. The rest were smokers
Posted by: Frank G || 08/26/2012 13:56 Comments || Top||

#12  All I know is many of the cops that I know from rural areas that actually practice with their sidearms would have stalked of in disgust at that showing by New York's "finest".

No matter civilian or cop or soldier, my trust is in the person that puts the most range time behind the weapon.
Posted by: DarthVader || 08/26/2012 14:38 Comments || Top||

#13  Yes, of course, there's video.
Posted by: tu3031 || 08/26/2012 14:47 Comments || Top||

#14  If I am correct, video shows an officer with gun out of holster but no bead on the bad guy.

Mesquite, TX police officer, at night, came up on a car just reported stolen by a bandit who was armed.

Officer, two combat tours Iraq, one combat tour Afghanistqan, shot at many times there, ordered the occupant to freeze with gun drawn square on the bad guy as he approaches the car. Bad guy exits car in the darkness, turns to officer, pulls object out of pocket and starts to point object at officer, officer lets loose ONE round paralyzing bad guy from waist down.

Instead of thanking the cop for not panicking and emptying the clip on him like many cops do who have never been shot at he sues the city for $100K for excesive force, and wins. The officer is now back in patrol, bad guy foreheads watch out this time(?).

I believe at least 5 lawsuits against NYC for much more will be the result. It's a fallen world.
Posted by: Kojo Tingle8923 || 08/26/2012 15:41 Comments || Top||

#15  That video is not very flattering for the peace officers.
Posted by: swksvolFF || 08/26/2012 16:09 Comments || Top||

#16  Serious lack of fundamental [weapons skill] training. Yup, I think you've got it. The mitigating element is that fact that AFAICT the shooting occurred on a crowded sidewalk. Pretty hard not to have a lot of collateral damage no matter what the training.
I was a block away from a similar shooting in my suburban type neighborhood, where 2 of my local police shot it out with a gunman standing in a house's doorway. The police were maybe 50 feet away & emptied both their clips. The gunman/double murderer survived.

50 feet is quite a long distance for pistol shots.

I was wondering if New York has the law that whatever damage or injury is committed during the commission of a felony, the onus is on the perp, regardless of whomever actually caused it. So I guess the dead man will have that on his permanent record.

Two Americans landed on the moon and explored its surface for some two hours Sunday, planting the first human footprints in its dusty soil. They raised their nation’s flag and talked to their President on earth 240,000 miles away."

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Isaac Threat Looms Large for New Orleans
Seven years later, those caught in the destructive path of Hurricane Katrina are being urged once again to prepare for the worst, as the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac grows by the minute.

As the large and strengthening system crossed waters with temperatures of 86 degrees or greater Sunday, forecasts called for the storm to make landfall along the Gulf coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday as a powerful Category 2 storm with winds of speeds up to 110 mph.

Isaac is likely to be the first significant hurricane to make landfall along the Gulf coast since Hurricane Gustav struck south central Louisiana near Cocodrie on Sept. 1, 2008. Wednesday marks the seventh anniversary of the day Katrina struck New Orleans and nearby Louisiana parishes, causing massive flooding and billions of dollars in damages.

"We've been watching those models like everybody else, and we're very concerned. Any westward shift changes things greatly for us," said Ken Graham, meteorologist in the New Orleans office of the National Weather Service.

Graham said the current track of the storm could mean 6 feet of water with the tides along the Mississippi coast. If the track shifts left and more directly toward New Orleans, "now we're talking a whole lot of additional water," Graham said. "We have low water flow in the Mississippi River, which is a different situation for us. You can actually have storm surges up the river," he said.

Graham said the levees in New Orleans are stronger than they were when Katrina hit in 2005."I've toured those levees, they look pretty good," he said. "They're going to do their best to hold back the water we get."

#7  From the Weather Nerd...

In a bizarrely low-key press conference that seemed more focused on calming residents’ “anxiety” and vaguely telling them to “be prepared” (and then making of a series of mundane announcements about municipal matters like trash collection and parking restrictions) than on advising them to take specific, concrete steps commensurate to the risk of a possibly major hurricane potentially making a direct hit on America’s most hurricane-vulnerable city starting in about 48 hours, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu did his best Ray Nagin impression Sunday, announcing a no-evacuation, “shelter in place” plan that suggests a stunning level of confidence that a worst-case scenario won’t happen, at a time when it remains, meteorologically speaking, very much in play.

The possibility that residents would be “sheltering in place” in a “place” the could, in the worst-case scenario, be swallowed up by the Gulf of Mexico, was not mentioned.

Arabia
Advice to {UAE} Tourists
fails to reach out
ABU DHABI -- The police-issued brochure entitled Advice to Tourists appears not to have reached much of its target audience.
Check the pic at the link, and count the wimmins adhering to the Tourist Code. It's a 'file photo', mean that the AP was adraid of offending His Enormity for some reason...
In at least three major hotels in the Capital city, the staff had not seen or even heard of the pamphlet brought out last month by the Abu Dhabi Police informing newcomers of behavioral dos and don'ts in the UAE. Upon the brochure's release, the police said they would be distributed to tourists at airports, hotels, tourism operating companies and public places frequented by visitors.

When asked, a number of hotel guests said they had not been given the pamphlets at any stage of their trip. But in spite of not receiving any information from the authorities, tourists still felt relatively informed and unworried on the subject of appropriate behaviour in the UAE.

The 14-point guide, available in 12 different languages, was created "to ensure that tourists adhere to local rules and regulations, and do not upset the traditional and cultural values [of the UAE]," said Brigadier Omeir Al Muhairi, Deputy Director of Abu Dhabi Police Operations, last month. Some of the brochure's warnings are clear-cut, such as the illegality of drug possession or alcohol consumption in unlicensed locations. Others are less so, notably the recommendation to "wear respectful clothing".

Prince Saud to leave hospital soon: royal court
JEDDAH: Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal
Who's pretty old but not as old as the King, who is positively old...
is still recovering in hospital from an operation earlier this month but will be discharged within a few days, the royal court said late Friday.

"The respirator used after the fully successful surgery was removed Friday morning," the court said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency. "His highness will leave hospital within the coming few days."

The royal court announced on August 11 that the 72-year-old prince had undergone surgery to remove an obstruction in his intestines.
Bowel obstruction, eh? Yup, those are nasty and sometimes fatal in the elderly.
Prince Saud is one of the world's longest-serving foreign ministers, having been appointed to the post in 1975.
Going for the Andrei Gromyko longevity award...
What ever happened to their mutual brother, Prince Bandar bin Sultan? Is he dead or alive or something we should worry might be contagious?

Pussy Riot members flee Russia
Three members of the all-female group were sentenced to two years in prison earlier this month for a "punk prayer", a protest staged at the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow in February, calling on the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Mr Putin.

The sentence drew sharp international criticism of the Russian government, while opposition groups at home have portrayed it as part of a Kremlin clampdown on dissent.

Earlier this week, police said they were searching for other members of the band.

A Twitter account called Pussy Riot Group however said two of their members had left Russia.

"In regard to the pursuit, two of our members have successfully fled the country! They are recruiting foreign feminists to prepare new actions!," a tweet said.

China-Japan-Koreas
China announces £800bn stimulus to boost confidence
One Chinese province after another has stepped forward over the last fortnight to announce their plans, in what appears to be a propaganda effort to reassure the public that the economy is still on track.

Meanwhile, Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, promised over the weekend that the Chinese government would intensify its efforts to boost the economy in the second half of the year.

On a visit to Guangdong, the heartland of China's export industry, Mr Wen warned that "there will still be a lot of problems and uncertainties in exports going forward. The third quarter is a crucial period".

Analysts said the government could now steer the value of the yuan lower, after a gain of 4.7pc last year against the dollar. Further export tax rebates could also be used to bail out manufacturers.

China's export sector is suffering from anaemic demand from Europe and the United States. In the first seven months, exports rose 7.8pc, while imports rose 6.4pc, leaving China in danger of missing its 10pc target for trade growth this year. July's exports grew at the lowest pace since 2009 and there are reports of factory workers leaving and returning to their home provinces for the first time since the financial crisis.

#3  The Chinese will save their money. Purchase gold and hoard it. They are trying to turn the Chinese into consumers. Not going to happen. Give the money to Europe and tie up manufacturing in a long term deal to corner the market. This will keep their factories going and people working. Problem is they are in the process of automation to reduce need of workers. Aw growing pains. Unions, benefits, higher wages, EPA and other western ailments. Paradise lost so soon.
Posted by: Dale || 08/26/2012 20:32 Comments || Top||

#4  It still comes down to how much China's one-party state - "tolerant" or flexible as it is or claims to be - is willing to de facto decentralize + liberalize, etc. in order to improve + expand their economy.

E.G. CHINESE MILITARY FORUM > CHINESE BROKEN DREAMS FOR NEW UNDERGRADUATES | [Al-Jazeera] CHINA: BROKEN DREAMS.

ARTIC denotes that ...
> 25.0Milyuhn young Chinese are on the constant prowl = search for jobs. Most will end up frustrated or disappointed.
> Young Chinese office workers are unhappy due to personal or job insecurities.

IMO, IOW they don't have trust in either their jobs or the Chinese economic boom to last long enough to make it worth their time + effort.

> Many reside in so-called "Ant Tribes" whose members are educated and dedicated, while also being excessively overworked and underpaid.
