Spamford Wallace accused of mass spamming on Facebook
[Dawn] A federal grand jury has indicted a Las Vegas man on charges he sent more than 27 million spam messages to Facebook users.

Forty-year-old Sanford Wallace, the self-proclaimed "Spam King," turned himself in Thursday to face charges outlined in last month's indictment filed in San Jose, Caliphornia.

Prosecutors say Wallace compromised about 500,000 Facebook accounts between November 2008 and March 2009 by sending massive amounts of spam through the company's servers.

In March 2009, a judge banned Wallace from using the social networking site, but the indictment alleges that he violated that order within a month.

Wallace is charged with six counts of electronic mail fraud, three counts of intentional damage to a protected computer and two counts of criminal contempt. He posted $100,000 bond after a court appearance Thursday.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Boob-Honking Festival is on in China
[Straits Times] The Chinese have entered the seventh month of the Lunar calendar, known as the Hungry Ghost month, which began July 31.

This period is considered unlucky for many Chinese as they believe that the ghosts are allowed to return to the human realm as the Hell Gate opens throughout the month. While the Buddhists and Taoists prepare offerings for the homeless ghosts, a minority tribe in China have their own interesting celebration.

The Yi people in Ejia town of Yunnan province, those who are still single, will head to the streets for Breast-Touching Festival on the 14th, 15th and 16th days of the month. On these days, the men are welcome to touch the women's breasts.

Legend has it that the festival began around the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-619) when most of the teenagers of the Yi tribe were forced into the army and died in wars.

The people then carried out prayers to commemorate the dead, and it happened that the ceremony was held in the seventh month. According to the wizards, the dead were unrestful because they had not touched a woman before.

And so, they wanted 10 'pure and untouched' ladies to accompany them in the afterworld. In a move to prevent themselves from being chosen, the single women - aged 15 and above - then asked the men to touch their boobs, and the custom is past down for generations.

North Sudan says holds southern oil shipment
KHARTOUM: North Sudan said on Friday it is holding an oil shipment from South Sudan because the new African state has failed to pay custom duties.
That's what they call 'extortion' now...
Customs authorities in the northern oil export port Port Sudan have stopped one shipment because duties had not been paid, a spokesman for the foreign ministry in Khartoum said. He said he did not much how much oil was affected.

Newly-independent South Sudan has to export its oil via the north because its had no port or refineries of its own.

Police probe Zimbabwe PM over $1.5 million house scam
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Zim-bob-wean police are investigating Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai over fraud involving $1.5 million, a leading private weekly newspaper reported today.

According to the Zim-bob-we Independent, Mr Tsvangirai and a close aide, who is now Zim-bob-we's ambassador to Germany, Mr Hebson Makuvise, allegedly misused the money that was meant for the purchase and renovation of the PM's new residence two years ago.

Citing "impeccable sources", the paper said the police had opened a criminal docket against the two this week.

"Allegations are that Tsvangirai and Makuvise misappropriated $1.5 million which came from the Reserve Bank of Zim-bob-we in 2009 to purchase the house," the paper said.

"The house, a double-storey mansion is currently under renovation to ensure it meets standards of quarters for a premier."

When Mr Tsvangirai joined the unity government in 2009 expectations were that he would move to Zim-bob-we House, a residency that was used by the head of government before the post was abolished in 1987.

But President Mugabe reportedly refused to let his former rival move in to the residency adjacent to State House.

The veteran ruler then authorised that Mr Tsvangirai must be given the $1.5 million to buy the house.

Police are also reportedly investigating allegations that the PM could have received another $1 million from Treasury for the same project.

Mr Tsvangirai's front man, Mr Luke Tamborinyoka, was quoted saying: "The Prime Minister remains unshaken about these allegations. If police are investigating the case we wish them good luck."

In 2004, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party was acquitted of treason after he was accused of plotting to kill President Mugabe.

He was also severely assaulted while in police custody in 2007 after he was set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock for allegedly attending an illegal meeting.

Early this year, the Attorney-General, Mr Johannes Tomana, set up a team of lawyers to explore if Mr Tsvangirai could be charged after United States embassy cables leaked by the whistle blower website WikiLeaks revealed that he had discussed Zim-bob-we's politics with Western diplomats.
MDC accuses police of targeting its members in politically motivated arrests.

This year, two ministers from the party and close associates of Mr Tsvangirai were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock for alleged fraud and calling President Mugabe a "liar".

Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has never hidden his dislike for the PM whom he accuses of being a puppet of the West.

According to the Zim-bob-we Independent, the commissioner is personally involved in the investigations against Mr Tsvangirai.

, to consult on a broad range of bilateral, regional and global issues," the White House said in a statement.

In addition, Biden will also visit China's southwestern city of Chengdu, the White House said.

In Ulan Bator, capital of Mongolia, the vice president will underscore U.S. support for Mongolia's two decades of democratic development and the growing economic ties between the two countries.

While in Japan, Biden will express "steadfast" U.S. support for its close ally in the wake of the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear emergency, the White House said, adding that he will thank U.S. civilian and military personnel for their assistance in responding to the disaster, and highlight Japan's "resilience" during the recovery and rebuilding process.

Other details will be made available at a later date, the White House said.

China says cyber hacking claims 'irresponsible'
[Dawn] Chinese state media on Friday condemned as "irresponsible" suggestions the country was behind a massive global cyber spying campaign uncovered this week by a US computer security firm.

Caliphornia-based McAfee described the sophisticated hacking effort as a "five-year targeted operation by one specific actor", without naming a country, but analysts and reports said China was the likely culprit.

The People's Daily -- the mouthpiece of the Communist Party -- said the claim that China hacked victims including the United States, United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
, defence contractors and the International Olympic Committee "does not hold water".

"It is irresponsible to link China to Internet hackers," the newspaper added, in China's first response to the claims.

McAfee said it had discovered the hacking campaign dubbed "Operation Shady RAT" by gaining access to a command and control server in a Western country used by the intruders and examining its logs.

Attacks on Asian and Western national Olympic committees, the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency occurred immediately before and after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, McAfee said.

This was "particularly intriguing and potentially pointed a finger at a state actor behind the intrusions, because there is likely no commercial benefit to be earned from such hacks," it added.

The victims also included the governments of Canada, India, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States and Vietnam, McAfee said.

The attacks involved sending infected emails to employees of the targeted companies. When opened, the emails implanted malware and established a backdoor communication channel to the command and control server.

China has been accused by the United States, Canada and other nations of spearheading online attacks on government agencies as well as companies, although the Beijing government has always denied this.

In June, Internet giant Google said a cyber-spying campaign originating in China had targeted Gmail accounts of senior US officials, military personnel, journalists and Chinese political activists.

S&P cuts US credit rating, China calls for new reserve currency
I am so sorry. The US is broke. This is before even the $70 billion in unfunded entitlements is factored in. Bill Gross of PIMCO worlds biggest bond trader dumped US Treasuries in March: for a reason.

You cannot afford the afghan/iraqi/libyan wars. Bring your troops home and rebuild your economy or in 5 years you will have lost reserve currency status and the dollar will be a worthless piece of paper

World Reacts to US Credit Downgrade: CNN
(CNN) -- International reaction to agency Standard and Poor's decision to downgrade the U.S. credit rating for the first time has been mixed.

In China -- which holds large amounts of U.S. debt -- a commentary published by the official Xinhua news agency was critical of the U.S. government and questioned whether the U.S. dollar should continue to be the global reserve currency.
"China, the largest creditor of the world's sole superpower, has every right now to demand the United States to address its structural debt problems and ensure the safety of China's dollar assets," the commentary said.
history shows it is easy to default on foreign creditors or to debase the currency and rob them with depreciation. But they sometimes react with warships eg: britain/german/italy blockade of venezuela in 1902
"International supervision over the issue of U.S. dollars should be introduced and a new, stable and secured global reserve currency may also be an option to avert a catastrophe caused by any single country."
that's the money quote people. China wants the transnational groups to supervise your currency. groups it can control. There are many ways for one country to control another, it doesn't need to invade if it can control your money supply
It's a lovely idea, but who will bell the cat?
Vice Finance Minister Yim Jong-yong will meet Sunday with senior policymakers from the Bank of Korea and other financial bodies to discuss what actions should be taken by Seoul, Yonhap reported.

Still, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard urged calm over the U.S. downgrade, pointing out that only one of the three major ratings agencies had taken that decision.
look on the bright side, says Big Red. We need a carbon tax to save jobs (!!!) right before she panics
Reaction was slow to come out of Europe Saturday, where
they are barely solvent and on the verge of currency breakup
questions have been raised about how many European leaders -- including the UK's David Cameron, Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Nicolas Sarkozy -- are presently on vacation.
inexcusable
Asked about China's call for a new global reserve currency, (UK Business Secretary Vince Cable) said it would be "a sensible way for the world to move" but that it would not happen quickly.
there you have it folks. Quick as that. you are going to lose world reserve currency status and in case you have any illusions you'd better understand one thing: that is what has buffered the US economy for years. When the Fed prints money and washes it through the system it insulates the US domestically and forces up food and fuel prices in Africa where they use the US$ to pay for things... and it's worth less than before. Africans have subsidised Americans. Lose reserve status and you lose that buffer. The game changes forever.

You can no longer afford middle eastern wars that cost you $1 billion a day.

In announcing the downgrade, S&P cited "political risks, rising debt burden; outlook negative."
More downgrades ahead. I am sorry. I did not want to see this.

#4  A country that has a carbon tax is not one to be giving out economic advice. As for the standard lefty trope of military spending being the biggest part of the US budget, that is only true if you break entitlements and health care down into teensy weensy little categories so you can count them all separately.

Anon1 is correct that US finances are *bleep*ed, but military spending is not the cause. People aware of Cloward/Pliven and Alinsky strategies might suggest this was the plan all along.
Posted by: SteveS || 08/06/2011 12:02 Comments || Top||

#5  hey steve

it's not my country giving advice and we don't have a carbon tax yet... nor will we if me and my mates have any say in the matter. it's insanity of the highest order.

I agree: military spending is not the cause of your woes. But it is the easiest solution.

What are you getting out of it? Do you really give a sh*t if some afghani villager lives their life as a free person or an islamist zombie?

If they want to change they will and who cares - let them bang their heads on the ground five times a day.

it's more important to be strong at home right now as your economy is falling apart.

You are right: health care is draining the life out of the US economy

it is a crazy system -- how did the US end up with a system where an employer is somehow responsible for heath insurance of a worker

crazy

Just go like Britain and Australia

Britain's NHS is a great system and cheaper to administer arguably once you factor in the waste along the way

Australia's Medicare system was also great until a few years ago when they started bringing in bullying "incentives" to force us onto private health insurance for what used to be paid for by taxes.

Some things are just cheaper for the government to provide and basic healthcare is one of them.

It's cheaper for the country as a whole - you get to simplify the system and wipe out the middlemen.

you can still have better quality healthcare for private insurance payers

and things like plastic surgery and discretionary items are not covered.

just the really necessary stuff like emergency surgery, cancer etc.

Anyway I digress. Healthcare only has a small amount to do with this.

The big problem is: too much debt

The government is broke and this downgrade has come right at the time when Europe is whacked with sovereign debt woes and stock markets are plunging.

Lowering the credit rating means the cost of credit rises.

Bond yields rise, prices fall, interest rates rise.

when the Government has to pay more to service it's debt, it's a downward spiral.

#6  One bright side -- China is caught in a trap of it's own making.

On the one hand they MUST keep buying US treasuries if they want to artificially depress the Yuan. That's how they manipulate their currency.

And yes, that has been the cause of their dramatic rise and the loss of the manufacturing industry: nobody could compete with child labour PLUS an artificially depressed currency

BUT on the other hand, the US devalues the dollar then the purchasing power of those bonds declines.

Sucked in China

The only problem is it will hurt the US citizenry particularly savers and retirees.

And just watch the markets plunge Monday.

The spread betting indexes are already factoring in a 100+ crash for Australia.

#7  I agree: military spending is not the cause of your woes. But it is the easiest solution.

The easiest thing to do? Of course it is. We could have ignored what happened on 9/11 and left bin Laden to continue terrorizing us and you too. It is far more difficult to be responsible with domestic spending especially when most of our politicians are crooked morons. But you can watch your own, thank you very much.

#8  As for international supervision over the US dollar, that is a pipe dream of our enemies. It ain't gonna happen.
Posted by: Abu Uluque || 08/06/2011 13:16 Comments || Top||

#9  Anyone who signs up for reserve currency status is also signing up for hundreds of billions in annual trade deficits. This is why nobody wants this poisoned chalice except Uncle Sucker. The Europeans don't want it and the Chinese are certainly not about to stop the currency restrictions and manipulation that keep the RMB's rank at position number 9 in terms of most-used currencies in international trade.

#10  anon1, you ask what we're getting out of our military spending. The question you might better ask is what you're getting out of our military spending. Pull out a map and think about the sea lanes Australia relies on; and consider the fact that, however brave and capable their crews, the RAN's surface combatants just might fill the hangar deck of the Abraham Lincoln. Or does your confidence in China's intentions and capabilities know no bounds?

#11  What Matt said.

The USN is the final arbiter of all inter-ocean trade disputes, it's not fair, but that's the way it is, this peculiar power belongs to the United States of America. Coal shortage in China? It could get damn worse in 48 hours, Pakistan got a maize shortage? Could get terminal in 72 hours. Shortage of oil anywhere in the damn world we want to happen? 96 hours. $250 oil? LOLA! How about no oil? The US is an oil producer, it's a stunning fact of life, but that's the way it is. Cut out drive thru windows and low-rider parades we're good to go. We got your damn reserve currency right here.

#13  The USD as reserve currency isn't the big issue. Its the USD as the currency of world trade.

Without a single currency to price international trade, multi-lateral trading collapses. And we go to bi-lateral trading which is little more than barter.
Posted by: phil_b || 08/06/2011 20:08 Comments || Top||

#14  But of course, the former is the direct result of the latter, phil. The USD is a reserve currency precisely because it is the currency of trade - and it is the currency of trade because of the volume of trade we do.

Time to drill domestically, folks. The oil outflows alone have been overly costly and the oil ticks are overly bloated.
Posted by: lotp || 08/06/2011 20:32 Comments || Top||

#15  Drilling is less than half of it. The US tends to export a lot to the countries from which it imports oil. A far larger problem is the merchandise trade deficit. That's also where lots of people are (un)employed. Oil exploration, drilling, transport and refining - not so manpower intensive.

U.S. Trade Balance, by Partner Country 2010
1 China ($278,301.2)
2 Mexico ($97,221.9)

Canada (2,006 thousand barrels per day),
Saudi Arabia (1,197 thousand barrels per day),
Mexico (1,154 thousand barrels per day),

U.S. Debt Now Surpasses 2010 GDP
The U.S. Treasury Department came out today with its Debt Position and Activity Report for July. The news is bleak.

With the additional $238 billion the Treasury immediately borrowed when the debt ceiling was raised on August 2, total current debt now exceeds 2010 gross domestic product (GDP) for the entire United States.

Debt at these levels is why Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s is concerned enough to be considering a downgrade of their credit ratings on U.S. debt.

Debt as of July 31 totaled $14.342 trillion. That was made up of $9.756 trillion held by the public and $4.587 trillion the U.S. government owes itself (intergovernmental borrowing, largely from the Social Security and Medicare trust funds to the general fund). GDP—the value of all of the goods and services produced in the United States—in 2010 was $14.5265 trillion. With the Treasury’s additional borrowings of $238 billion so far in August, the total of all debt outstanding has now increased to $14.5807. That’s $54.2 billion more than average 2010 U.S. GDP, the last year for which we have final estimates on GDP from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

This is a noteworthy event. It is going to be a very long time before the politicians in Washington are able to pay this debt back with interest. They should at least not be borrowing more. One wonders how they would like to mark this new milestone on the road to economic ruin. They can’t hide it. #1  How many bodyguards does the average Congress-critter have?

How do they protect their families and their homes?

Its not necessary since they are so beloved by all. Its unthinkable, of course. They do, after all, represent the interests of the People.
Ask yourself how much the average one makes in MONEY every year for doing such a good job for you, the average taxpayer.

But what would we replace them with, when all is said and done? More suits and the same old silk ties?

And some are there for life if they want it. Nancy and Harry are guaranteed a job. John Kerry ( big salute ) is a Leader. And Al Sharpton, or is that Al Frank...well whatever...they all look the same at a distance. How many are YOUR friends? Taking care of business. And you aren't a sucker, are you? But somebody sure is....

Cold Fusion hots up
Link to WUWT

I've read most of the cold fusion scientific papers published and am convinced there was a real phenomena there.

Failure to replicate the original Flieschman Pons experiment seemed to be due to unknown impurities in his platinum catalyst.

At least 10 labs have replicated the basic FP experiment and produced a net energy output, although far from commercial quantities.

The italian scientist at the link appears to have solved the catalyst problem and can produce cold fusion devices cheaply producing commercial quantities of power.

The rush to to discredit and ridicule Fleischman/Pons and other researchers was an early example of the new post modern 'consensus' science and we lost 20 years of research and wasted a couple of trillion on GW and so called clean energy.

Make an interesting book.

#1  Thank you phil_b. Hydrogen and cold fusion will see interesting futures in my opinion. Sad that the post modern 'consensus' science can be so intrusive.
Let people develop and get out of the way. Pet projects, funding cuts, politics and just plane greed. So much to overcome but people keep trying.

#2  1. At the reactions they're talking about, having 10% of the nickel transmuted into copper would have produced nuclear reactor levels of radiation and nuclear bomb levels of energy. Since it didn't, it's probably a salted sample.

2. When he actually had his tests of his machine run, he managed to do it with a system where material was constantly run through the system and then disposed of, instead of a system where you could do honest calorimetry with. This also suggests that the device is a scam. Instead for demos he trickled water into the system at a rate that was hard to measure and trickled the heated water down the sink, through a sealed electrochemical cell made out of the same metal hydrates used to power an electric car. There's a lot of potential for fakery there.

Chances are greater than 50% that you're reading this on a laptop computer or tablet with some sort of metal/hydrogen reaction battery. Chances are small but growing that you have a hybrid car that uses a metal/hydrogen reaction battery. He's running water through a tube full of nickel metal hydrides and saying any heat generated MUST be from nuclear fusion. I'm sure it's a coincidence.

#3  The rush to to discredit and ridicule Fleischman/Pons and other researchers was an early example of the new post modern 'consensus' science

Permit me to disagree. Unlike the global warming hucksters, Flieschman and Pons DID provide their data, calculations and results - just like scientists do. Unfortunately, IIRC, no one was able to duplicate their results. Despite whatever nonsense was generated in the press, there was some interesting stuff going on. Obviously, other people besides me and phil_b thought so because research is still going on with catalyzed reactions. Like this, for example.

Remember that the most exciting phrase is science is not "Eureka!", but "hmmm, that's interesting".

#4  Could be a scam.

But I know Italy is one of the places research on the FP phenomena has been going on for the last 20 years.

#5  Build it, show it, sell it. The science can come later.

If you can't sell free steak you can't sell anything and it likely doesn't exist. Build it, sell it. Get rich.

#6  I'll go one farther: we don't waste time on this website on how we can double our goddamn money by investing with Bernie Madhoff. Why do we waste time treating this asshole like he's serious when he's followed typical scammer behaviors all through _this_ venture, on top of his history.

#7  "Cold Fusion hots up"

What - again?
Posted by: Barbara || 08/06/2011 18:10 Comments || Top||

#8  SteveS, I wasn't saying FP was a an example of post modern science. Rather I was referring to the reaction of the powers that be in the scientific community and the media.

Amongst other things cold fusion as a potential energy source would have derailed the global warming bandwagon right at the begining.
Posted by: phil_b || 08/06/2011 18:12 Comments || Top||

#9  One other point to bear in mind is that US and EU patent offices reject cold fusion patents out of hand.

With no IP protection, I'd be secretive in their position.

#10  Call me when you can buy such a device to run your house. Until then - scam.

#11  Steve, IIRC from reading a review of research in the field a few years back, nobody was able to duplicate their results but some found a small energy excess. Others didn't. The high pressures and temperatures involved make high sensitivity radiation monitoring hard to arrange. I think one group claimed to see some radiation, but plenty of others didn't. Way back in the day Jones (since become a truther nut) claimed to see increased radiation levels, but at the tiny level expected from known physics.

Former Ukraine premier put in prison for violating rule in court
(KUNA) -- The former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was jugged on Friday during her trial on charges of disrupting courtroom order, the Russian news agency, the Interfax, reported.

Prosecutors ordered that the ex-prime minister be escorted to prison for defying judicial procedures and insulting the judges during the proceedings in the case against her, based on charges of illegally forcing the state energy company, Naftogaz, to sign a gas contract with Russia in 2009.

Tymoshenko, who had served as prime minister, has accused the authorities of politicizing the prosecution and clamping down on the opposition party.

She was reportedly escorted from the courthouse after Judge Rodion Kireyev approved a state prosecutor's motion to take her into custody over "systemic violations" of rules. Tymoshenko, who twice served as prime minister between 2005 and 2010, says the case against her is politically motivated and has been fabricated.
