Too Much Booze Leads to Cancer
You knew somebody was spending grant money on this, right?
About one in 10 cancers in men and one in 33 in women in western European countries are caused by current and past alcohol consumption, according to a study released on Friday.

In 2008, for men, 44, 25 and 33 percent of upper digestive track, liver and colon cancers respectively were caused by alcohol in six of the countries examined, the study found.

The countries were Britain, Italy, Spain, Greece, Germany and Denmark.
Fortunately, I don't live in any of those countries.

#2  I'm also very skeptical of any "scientific" study that flat out states "...44, 25 and 33 percent of upper digestive track, liver and colon cancers respectively were caused by alcohol..." There is not definite cause of cancers, just risk risers. There are a lot of people that smoke everyday and never develop lung cancer, but smoking will definitely add to the risk of developing it.

Now my question is, "Who funded this study and who were the scientists involved?" 10-1 it is a bunch of major political players that are trying to influence policy, like a higher tax on alcohol and they are providing the justification.

Mortars fired at Ouattara's hotel in Abidjan
[Al Jazeera] The hotel in Abidjan, where president-elect Alassane Ouattara has been camping since the disputed November election in Cote d'Ivoire, has been targeted by mortar fire, a UN official said.

The official said there were no fatalities at the Golf Hotel on Saturday and that the fire appeared to be coming from the presidential palace area where Laurent Gbagbo
... President-for-Life of Ivory Coast since 2000. Gbagbo lost to Alassane Ouattara in 2010 but his representtive tore up the results on the teevee and Laurent refused to leave despite the international community's hemming, hawing, and broad hints...
, the incumbent president, resides.

Earlier, Alain Le Roy, the UN peacekeeping chief, said forces loyal to Gbagbo were just one kilometre from the hotel.

Le Roy said Gbagbo forces have regained ground in Abidjan and now fully control the upscale Plateau and Cocody areas after being under attack by those of Ouattara.

He said they had used a lull in fighting for peace talks to reinforce their positions.

They still had heavy weapons, though UN and French forces had destroyed some of them, Le Roy told news hounds after briefing the UN Security Council.

The Battle For Abidjan

Click on the map to navigate

"We have seen heavy weapons to be transferred to the Cocody area, including this morning," he said on Friday, referring to photographs of M-21 rocket launchers, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and armoured personnel carriers.

Toussaint Alain, a Gbagbo front man, denied that forces loyal to him had access to heavy weapons.

Al Jizz's Haru Mutasa, reporting from Abidjan, said she had heard gunfire and helicopters from the direction of Cocody throughout the day on Friday, but that on Saturday morning, things were "relatively calm".

"What we're seeing is the UN and French military patrolling the streets ... It is relatively calm Saturday morning and people here have gone into some kind of pattern. We're being told that in the morning hours, they venture out onto the street, some of them, to try and find food and water, but at midday, they've learnt that around about that time they start hearing gunfire, and they head home," she reported.

The Constitutional Council declared Gbagbo the winner of the November 28 presidential election after nullifying earlier results that showed Ouattara emerging with the most votes. The international community, including the United Nations
...an international organization whose stated aims of facilitating interational security involve making sure that nobody with live ammo is offended unless it's a civilized country...
, however, has recognised Ouattara as the legally elected president and is working to oust Gbagbo.

Concern over violence

The fighting between the two sides has raged throughout Cote d'Ivoire and in Abidjan, the country's commercial capital, where both Gbagbo and Ouattara currently reside - Gbagbo in presidential palace, Ouattara in the posh but heavily guarded hotel.

Reports of extreme violence have emerged in recent days. The Catholic charity Caritas on Sunday said that more than 1,000 civilians had been killed in the town of Duekoue and blamed Ouattara's troops for the violence. Since Friday, UN forces have found more than 100 bodies in several towns - some burned alive and others thrown down wells.

Navi Pillay, the UN human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
commissioner, termed the reports she was receiving from UN teams in the country as being "utterly horrifying", saying in a statement that the situation in Abidjan was "appalling", and that due to the security situation the UN had still not been able to fully assess the extent of alleged violations.

Human Rights Watch, the New York-based rights watchdog, accused both Ouattara's and Gbagbo's forces of killing rivals and specifically accused Ouattara's forces of killing or raping hundreds of people and burning villages during an offensive in late March.

"To understand the tragic events in Ivory Coast, a line cannot be drawn between north and south, or supporters of Gbagbo and Ouattara," said Daniel Bekele, HRW's Africa director.

The UN says much of the violence appears to be ethnically motivated.

In Abidjan, Gbagbo has remained defiant in the face of increasing pressure. French and UN helicopters have attacked his presidential residence, where Gbagbo is staying with his wife.

His RTI television also came back on air Friday and broadcast an appeal for support.

"The regime of Gbagbo is still in place, a strong mobilisation is required by the population," it said.

Al Jizz's Mutasa reported Gbagbo was looking to exploit Ivorian scepticism regarding the reasons for military intervention in the country.

"One thing that Gbagbo is pushing ... [is] this agenda that Ouattara seems to be backed by the UN and La Belle France ... what has he promised La Belle France 'in return' for him gaining the presidency? So people are sceptical about this, Gbagbo is using it to his advantage," she said.

Gbagbo is believed to be defended by a force of around 1,000 presidential guard troops and youth militiamen, while the UN peacekeeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire has about 12,000 troops.

Meanwhile,
...back at the abandoned silver mine, the water was up to Jack's neck...
in Washington DC, Hillary Clinton,
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another John Quincy Adams ...
the US secretary of state, and the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, issued an alert on a potential humanitarian crisis and denouced attacks on UN peacekeepers.

The World Food Programme and UN relief agencies have appealed for humanitarian corridors to be set up in order to ensure safe access to fleeing civilian and to ease aid deliveries from Liberia and Ghana.

Aid workers estimate 1 million people have been displaced by the fighting and some 150,000 people have decamped the country.

Zambia forbids airing of campaign songs on radio
[The Nation (Nairobi)] The Zambia Government has threatened to revoke licenses of all radio stations that will air political campaign songs.
Now have the foes of freedom sought
Our happy union to divide,
For which our heroes bravely fought,
For which our patriots bravely died,

But vain their efforts all have proved,
The temple still unshaken stands,
Nor by the power of faction moved
Nor leveled by rebellion's hands,

Huzzah! for Madison, huzzah! for union and America,
Huzzah! for Madison, huzzah! for union and America.

And should the Tories all unite
And join again with British foes;
Though Satan might applaud the sight,
The heavens would soon interpose.

While Jefferson to shade retires
And Madison like morn appears
Fresh confidence and hope inspires
And light again the nation cheers.

Huzzah! for Madison, huzzah! for union and America,
Huzzah! for Madison, huzzah! for union and America.

It said it will not "take kindly" to this as it is against Zambia's Electoral Code of Conduct. "Both public and private radio stations are bound by the provisions of the code not to air campaign materials before the President announces the election date," Ronnie Shikapwasha, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting said.
The day is broke; my lads, march on,
And follow, follow Washington,
He will lead the way, my lads,
'Tis he that leads the way;

Where he commands we shall obey,
Through rain and snow, by night and day,
Determined to be free, my lads,
Determined to be free.

Till Freedom reigns, our happy bands
Will fight like true Americans,
Until our cause prevails, my lads,
Until our cause prevails.

With heart in hand, in God our trust,
We'll freely fight--our cause is just.
March on, my lads, lads, march on,
And follow Washington.

The day is broke; my lads, march on,
And follow, follow Washington,
'Tis he that leads the way, my lads,
'Tis he that leads the way;

However,
The all-purpose However...
some private radio stations are airing campaign songs for a section of opposition leaders. Shikapwasha criticised them, saying it was wrong for them to do so.

Bangladesh
Mobs kill 6 robbers in Gazipur, Habiganj
[Bangla Daily Star] Six alleged robbers were beaten to death and five injured by mobs in Kapasia of Gazipur and Lakhai of Habiganj yesterday.
It's a dangerous thing to be a miscreant in Bangladesh. The newbies get beaten to death by mobs, the old hand are cross-fired by the Rab. It's a wonder there are any criminals at all.
In Kapasia, villagers at Dighirkandi of Kurihata union caught nine robbers at around 8:30pm.
So new at the game that they didn't know about plotting first, leaving nothing for Mahmoud the Weasel to report.
They killed four before police could reach the spot.
"What spot, O'Siddique?"
"That spot, Sergeant. The same spot where we had that cross-fire two months ago. Look, sir -- you can still see the X."
The five others were rescued critically injured and rushed to local hospital, said Kapasia police.
"Dr. Quincy, another shipment for you... and sir, have you any colleagues accustomed to dealing with bodies that are still breathing?"
Of the dead, only one--Masud, 35, of Mymensingh--could be identified.
He was wearing an i.d. bracelet, which made it easy.
The gang was preparing to commit robbery in the houses of Monir and Zakir, who have recently returned from Soddy Arabia, Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin Meer of Kapasia Police Station told The Daily Star around 12:15am.

"Aged between 25 and 35, all nine were professional robbers. They had gathered in the house of local robber Khaleque, who is now in jail," added the OC.

Our staff correspondent in Sylhet reports: Villagers in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj clubbed two alleged robbers to death early yesterday.

The two--Kajol Miah, 45, and Zillu Miah, 40, of Madhabpur upazila--were caught while trying to flee the house of Jitu Miah at Dharmapur village.

Along with several others, they had burst into the house around 2:00am and held the family members at gunpoint.

Hearing cries for help, neighbours surrounded the house and caught two robbers. However,
The infamous However...
the rest of the gang managed to make off with cash and valuables worth around Tk 4 lakh, Nizam Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Lakhai Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Three villagers were shot and injured when fleeing robbers opened fire on them.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Re-installed Kazakh president pledges reform
[Al Jazeera] Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev
...has served as the President of Kazakhstan since the Fall of the Soviet Union and the nation's independence in 1991. Contrary to commonly held belief, there is a difference between Kazakhs and Cossacks: Kazakhs have mustaches. Or maybe it's the other way around...
has been sworn in for a new five-year term after securing a landslide victory in an election boycotted by the opposition and criticised by international observers.
If you boycott the campaign you're guaranteed not to win the election.
In the inauguration ceremony on Friday, Nazarbayev vowed to implement reform and said the election was a vote for stability and prosperity in the Central Asian nation.

"Today is a special day for me. The Kazakhs have made their historic choice and voted for me and I express my thanks," Nazarbayev said at the ceremony in the new capital Astana, whose building he personally masterminded.

In a nod towards criticism that his two-decades rule has provided stability but little semblance of democracy, he promised to increase the powers of parliament and government.

"We will continue our work for the further democratisation of society," he said.

"We must find an optimal solution to widen the powers of the parliament, the responsibilities of the government and to perfect the electoral system."

He said that the world "does not stand in one place" and Kazakhstan needed to modernise and pursue a policy of innovation.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe said Sunday's election was marred by numerous cases of ballot box-stuffing, voter intimidation and a lack of transparency.

The three rival candidates all openly expressed their support for Nazarbayev and the opposition argued they had been placed in the field by the government to make the vote look legitimate.

Nazarbayev has led the oil-rich ex-Soviet republic unchallenged since independence in 1991.

Kazakhstan's cabinet offered its resignation on Friday, in line with the constitution. Nazarbayev is expected to re-appoint or replace government ministers over the next few days.

N Korea orders nationals in Libya 'not to return'
[Indian Express] - North Korea has ordered its citizens in Libya not to return home in an apparent bid to block news of civil uprisings in the Arab World from reaching the isolated communist state, a report said on Sunday.

Pyongyang, in a message sent to its embassy in Libya, told some 200 North Korean workers not to return and to follow local authorities' advice, Yonhap news agency said, citing a source familiar with North Korean affairs.

The impoverished communist state sent hundreds of workers including doctors, nurses and construction labourers to oil-rich nations including Libya, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to earn much-needed foreign cash, Yonhap said.

Pyongyang and Tripoli have maintained close diplomatic ties, with Kadhafi described in the North as a "revolutionary comrade" of leader Kim Jong-Il, according to defectors from the North.

Experts say the North has stepped up its campaign to block information on pro-democracy protests in the Arab World, fearing they could spark similar disturbances among its own people against the ruling Kim dynasty.

WaPo Goes Behind the Scenes of the Shutdown Circus
The story of Capitol Hill's week on the brink is a narrative of three men, each with a confining sense of his own limitations. House Speaker Boehner entered budget negotiations at the head of a rambunctious Republican majority, worried that conservative lawmakers might desert him if the deal he struck didn't meet their expectations.

President Obama was trying to change his public image in midstream, from America's top Democrat to a chief executive immune from partisan squabbling.
And bragging about it in a photo-op.
The Post meant to say, 'trying to change his public image from a duffer...'
Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) had watched his party lose its momentum - his job had shrunk to defending Democrats' past gains.

For Boehner, his problem had been made clear a month ago. The House was set to vote on a stopgap budget to keep the country running, but 54 members of his caucus pressed the red button for "no," [sending]a message: He didn't have the unqualified support of all 241 House Republicans.

With almost 24 hours to go until the government shut down, Obama gave Boehner an ultimatum on the speaker's push to include abortion-related restrictions in the bill.
Not really a budget issue, one suspects.
"John, I will give you D.C. abortion. I am not happy about it," Obama said, according to a Democrat and Republican in the Oval Office. Obama told Boehner. "John, this is it."
Does the jellyfish really have a spine?
So we take what we get today and come back for more tomorrow (next year's budget). Obama certainly doesn't have a spine.
Before next year's budget, the debt ceiling will need to be raised in May, a good time to negotiate all sorts of things.
By the next morning, though, White House aides said Boehner's staff appeared to be asking for more cuts. So Obama tried to appeal to Boehner's sense of responsibility.
Acting the adult in private, the strutting meglamanic in public.
Reid also began trying to play hardball with Boehner, telling him that they wouldn't compromise on the abortion issue and there were no more cuts to be made, according to a senior Democratic leadership aide.
I'm sure Harry will deny this, should some rude newsboy dare to bring it up.
On Friday, Senate Minority Leader McConnell called Reid and asked for a final favor for Boehner. Reid said no. But he later playing softball and striking out gave in, in exchange for Boehner's decision to drop the Planned Parenthood demand. Reid and Obama said they would allow for an additional $500 million in spending cuts.
Time was, $500 million was real money. But Harry folding is priceless.
They had finally reached a deal: Boehner dropped his demand to take Planned Parenthood's funds. In return, he got $78 billion in spending cuts -- the $38 billion in cuts from last week's deal, plus $40 billion in increases to agency budgets proposed by Obama that were never agreed to. And he got the D.C. abortion provision Obama had offered the night before.
Can anyone remember when $78 billion seemed like a huge budget? What year was that, I wonder?
Later, but as soon as he heard about it, D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray expressed outrage. "The District of Columbia's right to govern itself has, once again, been sacrificed on the altar of political expediency."
Seems Federal funds always come with strings attached, Vinny. Try using your own money, instead of mine.
DC has never had the right to govern itself. It's a creation of Congress.
On Saturday, President Obama turned up at the Lincoln Memorial to shake hands with tourists and much more importantly, remind everybody of the deal that was made on his watch.

"I just wanted to say, real quick, that because Congress was able to settle its differences, that's why this place is open today and everybody's able to enjoy their visit," Obama said, according to reports. "And that's the kind of future cooperation I hope we have going forward."
'Cuz we lost last time, and if I can't get my way, at least I'll look like the Great Facilitator.
As the saying goes, turning chicken shit into chicken salad...

India-Pakistan
Sesame Street in Pakistan
It’s a good thing we’re flush with money, highly influential and well respected around the world. Otherwise, this plan might not seem like such a spectacularly fabulous idea.

The United States is funding a Pakistani remake of the popular TV children’s show Sesame Street.

In a new effort to win hearts and minds in Pakistan, USAID – the development arm of the US government – is donating $20m (£12m) to the country to create a local Urdu version of the show…

The remake will star a puppet called Rani, the six-year-old daughter of a peasant farmer, with pigtails and a school uniform, according to Britain’s Guardian newspaper.

No word on whether or not the female child puppet will be wearing traditional garb, or how much of it, but we do know that they won’t be including Count Von Count in the cast. I’m guessing that’s because… he’s a vampire? Further, the show’s creators have stated that they’re going to be avoiding questions of religion, so I don’t know how much westernization might be taking hold from this.
