Afghanistan
President Ghani Insists Trump’s Taliban Strategy Is Working
[ToloNews] As insecurity grows in parts of the country along with political issues around elections and the grinding of the peace processor, President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
says the US strategy to win the war against the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
is working.

"For the first time, the possibility of peace is really at hand," President Ghani said in an interview with VICE News on September 13.

But the country’s security situation offers little to be hopeful about. The number of civilians killed in Afghanistan reached a record high in the first half of the year according to a UN report in July.

The report said the covering period, 1 January to 30 June 2018, findings include the killing of more civilians in the first six months of this year ‐ 1,692 deaths ‐ than at any comparable time over the last ten years since records have been kept.

Deaths rose 1 percent to 1,692, although injuries dropped 5 percent to 3,430, the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in its latest civilian casualty report. Overall civilian casualties were down 3 percent.

Many areas in the country are either under Taliban’s control or have remain contested between government forces and bully boys, according to security officials. Over 200 people have been killed since mid-August in deadly incidents in Kabul and Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
Despite all these challenges, talking to the VICE News, President Ghani insisted that there is reason to believe that this time will be different. He pointed to the Eid al-Fitr ceasefire between government forces and Taliban as a proof that the country is moving forward towards peace.

"The ceasefire showed that this country is ready for reconciliation," Ghani said in the interview. "We are offering to overcome the past grievances and move forward and this I think is genuine because if they insist on a military victory that’s something the Afghans will not accept."

This comes after President Ghani at a gathering in Kabul on Thursday talked in favor of the US’s South Asia Strategy for Afghanistan and said "Afghans waited for the US’s South Asia Strategy for the past 40 years".

"The US strategy for Afghanistan and the South Asia strategy is a thing for which the people of Afghanistan were waiting for forty years," said Ghani.

U.S. Military's Worst-Case Scenario: Large Parts of Africa Seized By ISIS, Al Queda, and Boko Haram
[Intercept] WHAT KEEPS U.S. Africa Command chief Gen. Thomas Waldhauser up at night? That remains unknown, but the analysts under his command are worried about terrorist organizations like the Islamic State, Al Qaeda, and Boko Haram combining forces and destabilizing large swaths of the African continent.

Planning documents issued in October 2017 and classified by Waldhauser detail the worst-case scenarios imagined by the command. The forecasts, which are an update to AFRICOM’s Theater Campaign Plan and were obtained by The Intercept via a Freedom of Information Act request, center around potential gains by terrorist organizations in the north and west of the continent, specifically Libya, the Sahel, and the Lake Chad basin. They offer a nightmare vision of a destabilized, crisis-ridden region that could ‐ if the worst happens ‐ fall increasingly under the control of Al Qaeda, ISIS, and Boko Haram.

North and West Africa have seen intense U.S. military engagement over the last decade. America has, as The Intercept reported earlier this year, conducted approximately 550 drone strikes in Libya since 2011 ‐ more than in Somalia, Yemen, or Pakistan. In July, Politico disclosed that for at least five years, Green Berets, Navy SEALs, and other commandos ‐ operating under a little-understood budgetary authority known as Section 127e ‐ have been involved in reconnaissance and "direct action" combat raids with local forces in Cameroon, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Tunisia. Between 2015 and 2017, there were also at least 10 previously unreported attacks on American troops in West Africa, the New York Times revealed in March. Last October, four U.S. troops were killed in an ISIS ambush in Niger. Two months later, Green Berets fighting alongside local forces in that same country reportedly killed 11 ISIS militants.

The disclosure comes as Waldhauser has submitted a proposal, in response to the Trump administration’s strategy to increasingly focus on threats from China and Russia, to drastically cut the number of U.S. commandos on the continent and shutter several bases, according to a recent report by the New York Times. AFRICOM did not respond to requests to interview Waldhauser.

The AFRICOM documents imagine a future in which the Islamic State consolidates control over eastern Libya ‐ a region destabilized by a 2011 NATO military intervention that overthrew autocrat Muammar Gaddafi. ISIS, in this scenario, would dominate major cities and develop close ties with local militias and "tribal elements." According to the files, ISIS could then use oil revenues to finance a wide-ranging terror campaign. "ISIS and their associated branches might then begin to plan and conduct large scale, high-impact attacks against Western targets in North Africa and Europe," according to the files.

#2  Failed western foreign policy coming home to roost. The once preeminent military powers of the region (trained on the western model) have been transformed into obese kraal swine.

Or perhaps western foreign policy wasn't 'failed' at all.

'Containment' permits the threat to survive. The threat permits the military-industrial complex to flourish.

#4  It wasn't that long ago posters on this forum expressed concern about the spread of the wahhabi into the African continent.
For many reasons, the whahabi have morphed into IS, BH, and Al-Q. They are a force that has a nasty habit of killing Christians and nativists. There are large patches of civilization in Africa worth preserving.
The African continent is not the place to let this scum take control.
While I am not ready to put a standing army in Africa, I would support a decapitation campaign to make life tough for the bad guys.

#6  I have worked with many Africans in the oilfield. They are happy to get away from there, tired of the unending and constant corruption. They say they cannot trust anyone, even family many times. If Africa is as great as everyone keeps saying, then we should let Africa alone so it can be so awesome without any help from us.

German spy scandal exposes deep divisions in Merkel government
[Rooters] A scandal over migrants colonists being chased through the streets has exposed a rift between Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
and Germany’s security establishment that is dividing her coalition and hindering efforts to contain the fall-out from her "open door" refugee policy.

The crisis blew up when Hans-Georg Maassen, chief of the BfV intelligence agency, said he was not convinced far-right bully boyz had attacked migrants colonists in the eastern city of Chemnitz last month and a video said to show the violence may be fake.

Besides, gagging orders have been issued against nine other religious personalities.

The law enforcement agencies have been directed to keep vigilance on the fourth schedulers during Muharram and restrict their movement in addition to monitoring their communications.

An individual placed on the watch list of the ATA is bound to inform the concerned police before leaving their hometown and on return. Besides, the suspect is bound to inform the police about the place of their visit and individuals they meet.

The directives to ban the entry of 23 Learned Elders of Islam and issue gagging orders against nine others were issued after an intelligence agency informed the Punjab

3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Exciting Times: Radioactive material goes missing from truck in Malaysia prompting fears of militants building a dirty bomb
[Independent] The iridium was part of an industrial radiography device which disappeared while being carried on a pickup truck.

Two drivers were arrested but later released because of insufficient evidence, the New Straits Times reports.

The 23kg instrument was lost somewhere between the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur and the town of Seremban, some 37 miles away, on 10 August.

It is reported to belong to a company offering inspection services to the oil and gas industry.

It is unknown exactly how much iridium was in the device but the UN atomic agency has warned any loss or theft of radioactive material could put it in the hands of militants who might try to build a crude nuclear device.

SAA reconquest of Idlib: no plan to attack Idlib city, Russia to target drone factories

Syrian Army has no offensive planned for Idlib city

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) upcoming offensive in the Idlib Governorate will be limited to only certain parts of the province, a military source in Damascus told Al-Masdar News this weekend.

According to the source, the Syrian Army has offensives planned in northern Latakia, northern Hama, southeast Idlib, and southwest Idlib.

The source said that the offensives in Idlib will be limited to the Al-Ghaab Plain (SW Idlib), Jisr Al-Shughour (SW Idlib), and Abu Dhuhour area (SE Idlib).

He would add that the Syrian Army may push towards the outskirts of Saraqib and Ma’arat Nu’man, but this is still being discussed among the commanders of the Syrian Army and Russian military.

There has been much speculation recently that the Syrian Army would attempt to capture the entire Idlib Governorate; however, the military source said the army has not made these plans.

It appears that the main objective of these offensives is to seal the entire Idlib Governorare border with the Hama and Latakia governorates.

For Russia, retaking Jisr Al-Shughour is their primary objective, as it is the main launching point for the jihadist missiles and drones on the Hmeymim Airbase in southwest Latakia.

Russia vows to wipe out terrorist-run drone assembly workshops in Idlib

[AlMasdar] Russia has information where the terrorists assemble drones in Idlib and it will be eliminating these underground workshops, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of the German-Russian forum on Friday.

“We have intelligence information where drones are assembled in Idlib from components smuggled there,” he said. “As soon as we get such information, we will be eliminating such underground workshops that make lethal weapons.”

“What some describe as the beginning of a Russia-supported offensive by the Syrian army is malicious distortion of facts. Both the Syrian forces and we merely react to hit-and-run raids from Idlib,” Lavrov said. “It is very hard to detect drones with ordinary air defense weapons. Many of them are made of wood and cannot be seen on radar screens.”

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on September 5 that two Russian frontline bombers Sukhoi-34 wiped out a Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia) workshop in Idlib, where militants assembled attack drones and kept in store ammunition for them.

In the early hours of September 4, air defense systems of the Hmeimim air base shot down two drones the militants hand launched. Both drones were eliminated far away from the base. Over the past month 47 drones have been shot down or neutralized in the area of the Russian base.
