Salafist Al-Nour party backs El-Sisi in presidential race
[Al Ahram] The Salafist Nour party announced Saturday its support for former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to be Egypt's next president

The announcement comes after the party's supreme council, headed by its chairman, Younes Makhion held a meeting earlier on Saturday to discuss which of the candidates the party will support.

In a statement published by the party's Facebook page, Makhion revealed that El-Sisi was voted for by an overwelming majority of members.

The Salafist party was officially established in the wake of the January 25 revolution by members ofEgypt's largest Salafist group, 'The Salafist Call." In the first post-revolution parliamentary elections, the Salafist party garnered the second highest number of seats after the Moslem Brüderbund.

The one time ally of the Moslem Brüderbund, backed Morsi's ouster by endorsing a transitional roadmap -announced on 3 July by El-Sisi- that included amending the constitution and holding parliamentary and presidential polls by mid-2014.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia unveils part of strategic missile force -- a deterrent move against Iran?

Saudi Arabia publicly displayed its Dong Feng-3 (DF-3) ballistic missiles for the first time in a 29 April 2014 on a parade that marked the end of the largest ever military exercise held in the kingdom. The military exercise and official display of the ballistic missiles, which were acquired secretly from China in 1987 were clear signals Riyadh is directing to both Washington, Tehran and Baghdad. Riyadh acquired the missiles from China during the height of the 'city war' phase of the Iran-Iraq, after Washington refused selling short range ballistic missiles to the kingdom.

According to press reports Since 2007 Saudi-Arabia has augmented or replaced the DF-3 (CSS-2) with more accurate, solid fuleled DF-21 (CSS-5) ballistic missiles that are stored in ready to launch canisters, moving on all-terrain transporters. The missile's range is 1,646 miles (2,650 km) and its payload weight is around two tons.

The Saudi Arabian strategic missile force currently operates ballistic missiles located at least in three bases south and west south west of Riyadh.
That's a little far away from Iran...
Bases with similar facilities were located since the early 2000s north of Al Sulayyil, and at a mountain range in Al Jufayr, the third base near Al-Watah was reported only recently. As part of its modernisation the Royal Saudi Strategic Missile Force has moved in 2010 into a new and modern headquarters facility located in Riyadh.

Although an old and relatively inefficient missile, Dong Feng-3 (CSS-2) is considered the biggest and most potent ballistic missile currently operational in the Middle East. The Chinese built missile was developed to carry nuclear warhead, although China has provided the US guarantees that the missiles delivered to Saudi Arabia were modified to carry only conventional warheads.

The main advantage of this missile is that it is solid-fuelled, therefore being more responsive and survivable. The CSS-2 is powered by liquid fuel, and therefore requires a lengthy preparation before flight. Through the fuelling process that could take up to three hours the missiles are vulnerable and exposed to pre-emptive attack.

According to the Saudi media, the exercise, code-named Abdullah's Shield, involved Saudi troops. The manoeuvres were held in the kingdom's Eastern province at King Khaled Military City, in Hafr al-Batin, facing Iran and Iraq, and were timed to coincide with the ninth anniversary of King Abdullah's ascension to the throne. A preeminent guest at the exercise and parade was Gen. Raheel Sharif, the Pakistani chief of Army Staff According to persistent rumours spreading in the Arab media, Pakistan has helped Saudi Arabia to equip some of its ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads.

Britain
Head Teachers Raise 'Serious Concerns' Over Islamic School Take-Over
[Telegraph] Concern of 'Trojan Horse' plot spreads to three more state primaries as head teachers' leaders voice concerns for the first time over the Islamic infiltration at schools in Birmingham

Schools across Britannia are likely to have been targeted in an alleged Islamist plot to take over classrooms, head teachers have warned.

The National Association of Head Teachers said it had found "concerted efforts" to infiltrate at least six schools in Birmingham.

But the union also said that the scandal had "connections" to other large cities.

The Telegraph understands that there are growing concerns about the possible infiltration of schools in Bradford, Manchester and parts of east London.

The acknowledgement from the professional body follows a series of exposés by The Telegraph which disclosed how a "Trojan Horse" plot in Birmingham had put schools under pressure illegally to segregate classrooms and change teaching to reflect radical Islamic beliefs.

On Friday, Ofsted confirmed that its investigation had spread from 18 to 21 schools in the city. The three additional schools are primaries.

In a statement, the head teachers' association said attempts had been made to "alter their character in line with the Islamic faith", including sidelining parts of the curriculum and attempting to influence the appointment of Moslem staff.

Russell Hobby, its general secretary, warned that the action was unlikely to be "limited to Birmingham", adding: "I think it is connected into the large cities around the country."

It is the first time a major teachers' organization has confirmed that such concerns exist. The plot involves the alleged takeover of secular state schools and the removal of secular head teachers by radical Moslem staff and governors.

Five non-Moslem heads have left their posts in a tiny area of the city over the past six months. Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, has ordered an inquiry into Birmingham schools.

An inspection report by the Department for Education, leaked to The Telegraph, found that girls at Park View school were made to sit at the back of the class, GCSE syllabuses were "restricted to comply with a conservative Islamic teaching" and an krazed killer preacher was invited to speak to children.

Last week it emerged that Tahir Alam, the alleged ringleader of the plot and chairman of governors at Park View, wrote a detailed blueprint for the "Islamisation" of state schools in 2007.

Speaking at the NAHT annual conference in Birmingham on Friday, Mr Hobby said that there was no "cause for panic" and insisted few conclusions could be drawn until the completion of separate inquiries by Ofsted, the Department for Education, Birmingham council and West Midland Police.

Addressing a press briefing, Mr Hobby said the union had been supporting about 30 members in the city in around a dozen schools.

He said there were "serious concerns in half that", confirming that the six schools involved are among those being investigated by Ofsted.

Areas of "collective concern" included "pressure" on heads to adopt "certain philosophies and approaches" and over the appointment of teachers, he said.

In a few cases, schools risked "eroding the basic entitlement of children to a rounded education", he added.

Mr Hobby will cover the issue in a keynote speech to the conference on Saturday.

He will say: "Schools should not be places for indoctrination in any creed or ideology, political or religious."

In a statement, Ofsted said Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief inspector, had visited Birmingham last week to help lead the inquiry and that Ofsted had inspected additional primary schools this week.

Developer Scales Back Plans for Muslim Center Near Ground Zero
[NYT] The developer whose proposal to build a Moslem community center and mosque near the World Trade Center failed amid a national controversy three years ago said Tuesday that he now plans to construct a museum devoted to Islam in the same location.

Sharif El-Gamal, the developer, said through a front man that instead of a $100 million, 15-story community center and prayer space, he now planned a smaller, three-story museum "dedicated to exploring the faith of Islam and its arts and culture." The building would also include a sanctuary for prayer services and community programs.

Daisy Khan, who along with her husband, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, was originally a partner with Mr. El-Gamal in the Park51 Community Center project, said that they had not been contacted or involved with these latest plans. "I am just as surprised as anyone else," Ms. Khan said.

Death toll rises to 27 in Assam killing
[Dhaka Tribune] Seven more bodies have been found in the Baksa district in Assam, taking the number of people killed in the violence in the state to 27 in the last 36 hours.

A curfew has been imposed, and shoot at sight orders have been given in the Kokrajhar, Chirang and Baksa districts in Assam, after killings by suspected Bodo rebels, reported NDTV.

The region was witness to widespread ethnic violence two years ago too.

Eleven Moslems was rubbed out by suspected tribal rebels in attacks in India's northeasterly tea-growing state of Assam on Friday, where tension has run high during a drawn-out general election, officials said yesterday.

Police said they suspected snuffies from the Bodo tribe were behind the attack in a region where tension between ethnic Bodo people and Moslem settlers spilled over two years ago into festivities in which dozens were killed and 400,000 fled their homes.

Bodo representatives argue that many of the Moslems are undocumented Democrats from neighbouring Bangladesh encroaching on their ancestral lands, and election candidates including front-runner Narendra Modi have called for tighter migration controls.

In one of the incidents, eight people were killed by a group of suspected Bodo guerrillas.

In the other, three members of one family including two women were rubbed out, and a baby was maimed, said a police brass hat in the state's main city, Guwahati.

Voting was held over several days in Assam to help security forces handle violence from any of the separatist or tribal murderous Moslem groups active in the state.

Polling in the Bodo region ended on April 24, in what residents say was a tight race between a Bodo and a non-tribal candidate, although results from the five-week national election are not due for another two weeks.

IDF Deploys Patriot Battery In Eilat
[Ynet] Air Defense Command replaces aging Hawk anti-missile defense with upgraded Patriot missile interceptor.
Question: What if Israel's anti-missile batteries blow up or knock off course an incoming Iranian nuke before it reaches Israeli airspace?
A Patriot missile battery was deployed near Eilat in mid-April, as part of an IDF plan to assure permanent protection of the resort city's sky. Deployed by the Air Defense Command of the IAF, the new Patriot battery replaced the aging Hawk anti-missile platform which was permanently deployed in the area.

The new Patriot battery includes an advanced radar system; it is expected to provide a strategic response to ballistic missiles, enemy warplanes, and attack UAVs.

The battery's interception program was upgraded in the last year and a half to allow the Patriot to quickly intercept simultaneous targets. The new radar array deployed by the battery will provide enhanced identification capabilities for a wide-range of suspicious locations and targets in the Sinai peninsula, Jordan, and the Red Sea.

The Patriot missile system, famous for its role in the first Gulf War, is one of the most advanced platforms for ballistic missile interception. The IDF said the decision to purchase the Patriot batteries was taken before Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait -- nearly half a year before the first Gulf War.

Israel received the first missile batteries several months before the US invasion; after President George H.W. Bush's administration decided to deploy its troops, it decided to supply additional batteries to Israel at a reduced price.

During the first Gulf War, which began in January of 1991, the Patriot batteries intercepted a number of Scud missiles launched towards Israel and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
from Iraq.

At the time, American Patriot batteries deployed to Germany were transferred to Israel and set up in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

In 2012 the missile interceptor platform was significantly upgraded with advanced cameras to assist the battery's targeting systems.

The following year, in 2013, Israel received its first Patriot simulator. The advanced training module, stationed in the Academy for Air Defense is southern Israel, was established to allow for greater flexibility in training Patriot operators -- who until then had to undergo their training in the US.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran Says It Has Briefed Nuclear Agency On Suspected Detonators
[Ynet] Tehran provides IAEA with information on exploding bridge wire detonators, which have both civilian and military applications.

Iran has provided the UN nuclear watchdog with a report about the use of detonators with military applications, as part of a seven-step accord intended to allay fears about the country's atomic program, Iranian media said on Sunday.

Hoping to end global economic sanctions, Iran's new government agreed in February to take seven practical steps by May 15 to clear up suspicions held by the United States and several other countries that its goal is to produce nuclear weapons.

Tehran insists its nuclear projects are purely civilian.

Among the seven steps is to provide information to the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency on so-called exploding bridge wire (EBW) detonators, which can have both civilian and military applications.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency said on Sunday the "EBW report has already been submitted to IAEA, (along with) updated design information on Arak reactor".

The heavy water Arak reactor is another point of contention between Tehran and the IAEA, which is mandated by world powers to investigate Iran's suspected nuclear activities.

There was no immediate comment from the international nuclear watchdog, but senior IAEA official Massimo Aparo was due to join a team of inspectors in Tehran late on Sunday to visit Saghand uranium mine and "yellow cake" production plant in Ardakan, and also hold discussions on the Arak reactor.

"The implementation of all seven steps agreed with IAEA will be finalised this week," ISNA said.

Iranian Commander: Front Line Now In Southern Lebanon
[IsraelTimes] A top adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei boasted of Iran's robust influence in the Middle East Saturday, claiming victory in Syria, and said that his country's first line of defense is now the Lebanese border with Israel.

"Our frontmost line of defense is no more [in southern Iran], rather this line is now in southern Leb [on the border] with Israel, as our strategic depth has now stretched to the Mediterranean coasts and just to the north of Israel," Yahya Rahim Safavi said in a speech to a group of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) veterans, the semi-official Fars news outlet reported Saturday.

Iran has long maintained hegemony in southern Leb via its support of the Hezbollah terror group, which is seen as Tehran's regional proxy.

Safavi said Iran's strategy of supporting Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
against an insurgency had succeeded in thwarting Western powers.

"Certainly, the US, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Turkey, Qatar and the European countries' strategy to overthrow [Syrian President] Bashir al-Assad has failed and this failure is a strategic failure for the western, Arab and Zionist front and a great victory for the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran," he said.

Iran is the Assad regime's staunchest ally and has exhibited the extent of its regional influence in helping to turn the tide of the Syrian civil war in Assad's favor.

For much of the war Hezbollah declined to get involved, but sent troops last year after reportedly receiving pressure to do so from Iran.

Since Hezbollah became involved, forces loyal to the regime have made major gains in the war, pushing rebels out of key areas along the Lebanese border.

While Iran was shut out of an international peace conference on Syria in January, many analysts have questioned whether a peaceful solution can be attained without the Islamic Theocratic Republic's involvement, and numerous countries, including Russia, as well as the UN, have lobbied for its inclusion.

Iran Denies Inspectors Access To Suspected Nuclear Facility
[IsraelTimes] Iran's atomic energy organization on Saturday said it was denying international inspectors access to the suspected nuclear facility at Parchin, stating the IAEA was not entitled to visit the military complex outside the Iranian capital of Iran.

"Legally, they are not entitled to visit Parchin since we have not accepted and are not exercising the Additional Protocol (to the NPT)," the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran's Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi was quoted by the semi-official Fars news agency saying.

Iran has stated that it has no obligation to grant the IAEA access to the site, arguing that Parchin's designation as a military site puts it off-limits to inspections and is not included in the deal reached with world powers last year.

The Parchin military site has been a sticking point in long-running discussions between Iran and the IAEA; the agency suspects explosive tests took place that are "strong indicators of possible nuclear weapon development."

Meanwhile,
...back at the wine tasting, Vince was about to start tasting his third quart...
Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the AEOI, told Iranian media Saturday that operations at the heavy water reactor in Arak would continue.

The Arak reactor is of international concern because it could theoretically provide Iran with a second route to a nuclear bomb -- an alternative to highly enriched uranium -- through extraction of weapons-grade plutonium from spent fuel if it also builds a reprocessing facility.

Iran's enrichment activities are in defiance of repeated UN Security Council demands and resolutions, amid suspicions in the West and Israel that Tehran's nuclear drive masks military objectives, a claim it has repeatedly denied.

Thousands of hard-liners in Iran gathered Saturday at the former US Embassy in Tehran to protest against the Islamic Theocratic Republic's recent deal with world powers over its contested nuclear program.

Hard-liners carried banners Saturday accusing moderate President Hassan Rouhani and the nation's nuclear negotiation team of "giving up Iran's right in return for little."

Rouhani has faced criticism from hard-liners over the deal struck in November, which they refer to as a "poison chalice." The temporary deal saw some sanctions lifted against Iran in exchange for it limiting uranium enrichment and allowing in international inspectors.

World powers and Iran are negotiating the terms of a final deal.

#3  While some in the media and in gov't have forgotten, Saddam kicked the UNSCOM WMD inspectors out of Iraq as well. When the inspectors left, it wasn't long until the shooting started.

Zawahri: Iraqi branch in Syria must return home
[Beirut Daily Star] Iraqi al Qaeda's entry into Syria's civil war caused "a political disaster" for Islamist Death Eaters there, the movement's global leader Ayman al-Zawahri said in a video message, urging the faction to redouble its efforts in Iraq instead.

Zawahri has repeatedly tried to end infighting between the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and another al Qaeda-aligned group, the Nusra Front.

He said on Friday in a message translated by SITE Monitoring that if ISIL had accepted his decision not to get involved in Syria and had instead worked to "busy itself with Iraq, which needs double its efforts" then it could have avoided the "waterfall of blood" caused by Death Eater infighting.

ISIL Death Eaters joined the conflict in Syria last year and unilaterally declared they were taking over the Nusra Front, which had won the admiration of many rebels fighting Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

for its battlefield prowess.

Zawahri, who has run al Qaeda since the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
was killed in April 2011, accused ISIL's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, of "sedition" and said rebel disunity had been handed "on a plate of gold" to Assad, the ultimate target of all Sunni Islamist groups in Syria.

Zawahri said Storied Baghdadi should instead redouble his efforts against the Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
... Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party....
who is a Shi'ite - an Islamic sect regarded by al Qaeda as heretical. Shi'ism is the dominant sect in Iran.

He said that toppling Assad would "cause the elimination of more than half of the Iranian power alliance that seeks to establish a Shi'ite state from Afghanistan to south Leb".

On Wednesday the United States said al Qaeda's core organization in Pakistain, led by Zawahri, had been severely degraded, but that the movement's affiliates in Africa and the Middle East were becoming more autonomous and aggressive.

60,000 Flee Inter-Jihadist Battle in East Syria
[An Nahar] Around 60,000 people have fled towns in Deir Ezzor province of eastern Syria that have been the scene of fierce festivities between rival jihadists, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Saturday.

The battle between al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front and the breakaway Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant

to stop fighting.

"Residents of the towns of Busayra, home to 35,000 people, Abriha, home to 12,000 people, and Al-Zir, home to 15,000 people, have nearly all been displaced by the fighting in the area," said the Britannia-based monitoring group.

The monitoring group, which relies on a vast network of contacts on the ground for its data, said Al-Nusra Front's fighters burnt down several houses in Busayra, as did ISIL in Abriha.

At least 62 fighters have been killed in this week's festivities, said the Observatory.

The latest showdown between Al-Nusra and ISIL erupted on Wednesday in energy-rich Deir Ezzor, bordering Iraq.

"There are battles now in an area around 10 kilometers (six miles) from Busayra that has an oil rig and a gas plant," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

The group said hundreds of the displaced had reached Turkey but the vast majority sought refuge in other rebel-held areas of Deir Ezzor province.

Conflict in Syria since March 2011 has killed more than 150,000 people and forced nearly half the country's population to flee their homes.

Al-Nusra Front is seen by many rebels as an ally, but ISIL has been widely rejected by the armed opposition to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

Mainstream rebel fighters launched a massive offensive against ISIL in January and Al-Nusra Front joined the battle later.

Al-Qaida spokesman condemns US support of Egypt and protection of Israel
[Ynet] Al-Qaeda's American front man has accused the United States of colluding with military leaders in Egypt to topple the democratically-elected president last summer, saying the U.S. supports the Egyptian army because it "protects the borders of the Jewish state."
