Afghanistan
Karzai will not seek third term
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
, who has led Afghanistan for nearly a decade, said Thursday he would not seek a third term in office at an election due to coincide with the end of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
combat operations in 2014.

Some political opponents had feared that Karzai, who has been Afghanistan's only leader since the 2001 US-led invasion brought down the Taliban, may amend the constitution in order to stay in power.

"The constitution of Afghanistan does not allow anyone to run for the presidency for more than two terms," the president's office quoted Karzai as telling a group of parliamentarians.

He "will not try to run for the presidency for the third time", it said, adding that he was making the announcement in response to "rumours".

With three years to go before Afghanistan's next presidential election, the announcement took many analysts in Kabul by surprise.

On Wednesday, Karzai took a step towards resolving a long-running row over vote-rigging in last September's parliamentary polls by handing authority for adjudicating the issue to the Independent Election Commission.

But it was not immediately clear whether the two moves were connected.

Karzai has also suffered the loss of a number of key allies in recent months in the midst of a raging Taliban insurgency.

The president, whose initially warm ties with the West have descended into acrimony in recent years, was sworn in as interim leader of Afghanistan in December 2001, shortly after the US-led invasion toppled the Taliban.

In 2004, he won the country's first direct presidential ballot with 55.4 percent of the vote.

But his re-election in 2009 was mired in allegations of corruption, in which challenger Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
abandoned a second-round run-off and Sherlocks threw out a third of Karzai's original votes because of fraud.

Western diplomats say this was a key factor in deteriorating relations between Karzai and foreign powers, notably the United States.

A number of key Karzai allies have been assassinated in recent months, notably his powerful brother Ahmed Wali Karzai and the mayor of the southern city of Kandahar, who were both killed in July.

Afghan analyst Waheed Mujda said he thought the move was partly motivated by Karzai's diminishing power base.

"I believe that even until one year ago, the president had the intention to somehow continue his power, if not as president then as a regional power holder in his birthplace in the south," Mujda said.

Uganda invites Eritrean tyrant for visit
Uganda has invited Eritrea's leader, President Isaias Afewerki, accused by the West of stoking Somalia's Islamist insurgency and destabilizing east Africa, to a state visit next week.

Eritrea rejoined the East African bloc IGAD last month, four years after it walked out on the body in protest at arch-foe Ethiopia's invasion of Somalia to oust an Islamist administration with ties to al Qaeda.

"Eritrea is one of the strategically vital countries to the stability of the region, especially in the Horn of Africa and the wider global agenda," Uganda's State House said late on Thursday.

In late July, a U.N. Monitoring Group report said that Asmara had bankrolled al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants in Somalia. Al Shabaab claimed they were behind a twin suicide bomb attack on Kampala last year.

Experts say that Isaias has become diplomatically isolated. Leader of one of the world's most reclusive states, Isaias seldom makes state visits.

The U.N. has imposed a travel ban and an asset freeze on Eritrean political and military leaders, as well as an arms embargo on Eritrea.

Asmara denies violating an arms embargo on Somalia, and accuses the United States and Ethiopia of "irresponsible interference".

Britain
'Iran ready to send peacekeepers to UK'
[Iran Press TV] Commander of Iran's Basij Force says it is ready to deploy peacekeeper forces in London as the unrest in the British capital drags on despite tightened security measures.

"The Ashura brigades of Basij forces are ready to be deployed to London as peacekeeping forces," Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Naqdi said on Thursday, Fars news agency reported.

Naqdi criticized the British authorities for their harsh crackdown of protesters and describing them as rioters and hooligans.

"Unfortunately the crimes and violence of the autocratic British kingdom continues against the country's deprived [population] and not only the advice of well-wishers has no effect on the conduct of the regime's repressive police force but we witness the deprived people of this country are being called a bunch of thieves and looters," he regretted.

It is not clear why they cannot identify and track down the thieves while they have more than 4.6 million security cameras installed in the country and there are only one million people living in London, the Iranian commander questioned.

Naqdi expressed disappointment with the UN Security Council as invariably supporting oppressors.

"If the UN General Assembly approves, the Basij Organization is ready to send a number of Ashura and al-Zahra brigades to Liverpool and Birmingham as peacekeepers to monitor observation of human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
laws and deter use of force," he added.

Naqdi referred to UK Prince Williams' lavish wedding and the high cost of its live coverage and described the recent uprisings in Britannia as the result of "big mistakes" by British officials and warned them of even more severe consequences.

"This is the beginning if the road and the UK regime has to pay the price for the massacres in Africa, wars and bloodshed in the Indian peninsula, crimes in China, the fall of the Ottoman Empire and bloody conflicts among Mohammedans and followers of other faiths," the brigadier noted.

He said the uprising in Britannia even if oppressed at this stage is far deeper than a political unrest or factional conflict to be resolved easily.

"This wound will come to a head elsewhere...The people of Britannia have awakened and will definitely take their rights back," he stated.

Naqdi condemned the use of violence against protesters in Britannia and deplored the killing of Mark Duggan, 26, who sustained injuries in a shooting spree by armed officers in Ferry Lane in Tottenham last Thursday.

The father of four was killed after police stopped the minicab he was in to carry out an arrest as part of a pre-planned operation. Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
ballistic tests have indicated that Duggan did not fire at officers before he was killed.

Naqdi recalled remarks by Fearless Leader of the Islamic Revolution
...Iran's doddering head theocrat...
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
...the successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the actual dictator of Iran...
, who had earlier warned of similar revolutions in Europe as those in North Africa and the Middle East.

#5  What is the feasibility of transport Logistics in Britain to airlift 100,000 Yobs to the Iranian border and just unload them off the truck or just run them ashore in Mike Boats at about 100 at a time. All the liquor and drugs they want before hand, of course.

Multiple points of entry at a predetermined simultaneous time, of course. And let the friendly Iranian people who are noted for their Moslem values and hospitality do the rest.

No seriously. Islam would have an opportunity to save these people and admit them to the flock of Believers. Might take a while, unfortunately. But Allah is Merciful, yea, He is beneficent.

Project Gunwalker: Cornyn Demands Info -- ATF Ops In Texas
Sen. John Cornyn took a stand against the gun walking that has been reported in Texas. Gun walking is a practice similar to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ “Fast and Furious” operation, which is now undergoing intense scrutiny in a congressional investigation.

Under the program, ATF agents did not intercept firearms that were suspected of going to drug cartels, but instead attempted to follow the firearms to lead them to gangs’ higher-ups. Problems arose when those firearms were later used in violent crimes and killings.

Cornyn today sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder requesting information about any gun walking operations in Texas.

“Unfortunately, the Department of Justice has been less than forthcoming during congressional investigations into the failed ‘Operation Fast and Furious,’” Cornyn wrote. “I believe it is important that you promptly disclose the details of any past or present Texas-based ATF ‘gun-walking’ program similar to ‘Operation Fast and Furious.’ My constituents deserve a full accounting of any such activities in Texas

India-Pakistan
India to hang ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi's LTTE killers
[Emirates 24/7] India's president has rejected the mercy pleas of three men convicted for the 1991 liquidation of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, paving the way for their execution, an official told AFP on Thursday.

"The rejection (of the clemency petitions) happened last week after the president returned from a foreign tour," presidential spokeswoman Archana Datta told AFP.

The appeal sent to President Pratibha Patil by the three -- Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, all known by single names -- were their last hope of escaping the hangman's noose.

The condemned men, who belonged to Sri Lanka's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) turban group, are charged with plotting the May 21, 1991 killing of Gandhi by a woman jacket wallah.

The Supreme Court in 1999 confirmed the death sentences of the three men, but commuted the capital punishment to life in prison for Nalini Sriharan, an Indian Tamil woman who was also convicted.

The three men sought a presidential pardon after the top court's verdict.

A woman with explosives strapped to her body blew herself up, killing Gandhi instantly while he was on an election tour in the southern Indian town of Sriperumbudur.

The LTTE, wiped out by Sri Lankan forces following a bloody offensive by government troops on the island in 2009, denied its hand in Gandhi's liquidation.

Rajiv's mother, former premier Indira Gandhi, was also assassinated in October 1984. One of the surviving killers was hanged.

The last execution in India was in 2004 when a 41-year-old former security guard was hanged for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old schoolgirl.

In May this year, however, President Patil unexpectedly rejected a mercy petition from a murderer in the northeastern state of Assam, leaving the state scrabbling to find a hangman.

Many of the small number of known hangmen nationwide have either died or retired in recent years.

MI denies custody of Hizbut Tahrir activists
The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday was informed that the Military Intelligence (MI) had categorically denied abduction or custody of four missing activists of banned Hizbut Tahrir.
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
Appearing before the single bench of IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman in four identical petitions filed by the relatives of missing HuT's deputy front man Imran Yousufzai, Hayyan Dawar Khan, Osama Hanif and Dr Abdul Qayyum; Deputy Attorney General Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri said the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) had requested for more time to submit their reply as they needed to gather data from all over the country.

He said the petitioners' counsel had alleged that the missing persons had been jugged in General Headquarters. "If the allegation is true, even then the GHQ is beyond the jurisdiction of this court and only Lahore High Court can take up the matter," he contended.

According to him, cop shoppes of Shalimar, Koral, Margalla and Rahim Yar Khan had started investigations after registration of FIRs of the abduction of the missing persons; therefore, the petitions may be disposed of.

He expressed the possibility that the missing persons would have gone to North Wazoo on their own, as there had been such instances in the past.

Umer Hayat Sindhu, counsel for the petitioners, said earlier MI and ISI in similar situations had denied the abduction of two persons -- Siddiqul Farooq and Ghulam Rasool -- but later produced them when the Supreme Court issued it a 24-hour ultimatum.

He informed the court that the fifth missing HuT activist, Abdul Wajid, who was allegedly kidnapped on July 30, had returned home late on August 9.

Upon his return, his brother-in-law Sanawar Shah, the petitioner, requested the court for withdrawal of the petition. Mr Sindhu said Wajid was jugged by MI at Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

The court reserved judgment on the petitions and will announce it on Friday.

Southeast Asia
Bali bombing key suspect to be put on trial
[Emirates 24/7] Bali bombing suspect Umar Patek arrives in Jakarta, to stand trial for 2002 attack. Umar Patek allegedly made the explosives used in the 2002 Bali bombings. He was extradited to his homeland under tight security on Thursday, more than 6 months after he was captured in northwest Pakistain, officials said.
They actually gave him up to the Unbelievers to put on trial. Colour me shocked.
Umar Patek had a $1m bounty on his head when he was captured in the town of Abbottabad on Jan. 25, four months before the late Osama bin Laden
Osama bin Laden is dead.
He took two shots to the head.
That made him frown
and he had to lie down.
Osama bin Laden is dead.

was killed there in a US commando attack.

Intelligence officials believe he possesses valuable intelligence on the current state of Al Qaeda and its hardy affiliates in Southeast Asia and say he has already provided Sherlocks with some information about other attacks.

Indonesia sent a plane to pick up the 41-year-old Patek from a Pak air force base just outside the capital, Islamabad, on Wednesday night, a Pak intelligence official said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The plane touched down on the outskirts of Indonesia's capital early Thursday, said an Indonesian anti-terrorism official.

Patek will be held in a police detention house in the West Java town of Kelapa Dua, just south of Jakarta, pending trial. No date has yet been announced.

Indonesian officials say Patek has confessed to playing a key role in the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists, including 88 Australians.

But they have nevertheless expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
over whether they will be able to lock him away for life.

One potential problem is that he may not be able to be tried under tough anti-terror laws passed after the Bali blasts because they cannot be applied retroactively.

Patek's arrest in Abbottabad has raised questions over whether he was in the town to meet Osama, something that would challenge theories that the Al Qaeda chief was cut of from his followers.
Or perhaps he was just hanging out somewhere he had reason to believe was safe for the likes of him.
US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the issue, have said that his arrest in Abbottabad was a coincidence.
