Anti-government protesters march in Somali capital
Anti-government demonstrators, including women dressed in full hijabs brandishing AK-47 automatic rifles, marched through the streets of Somalia's violence-torn capital Monday.

The marchers shouted slogans and carried English-language signs accusing the African Union Mission in Somalia, or AMISOM, a peacekeeping military force backing the government, of killing people. "AMISOM killed my mummy"
Aren't mummies by definition dead already?
and "AMISOM get out of our country" said two of the signs against the African peacekeepers.

The protest followed a pro-government rally last Friday and recent clashes between hard-line Islamists and government forces that have killed dozens of people.

Al Shabaab leader urges attacks on peacekeepers
The leader of Somalia's hardline Shebab militia has called for attacks on African Union peacekeeping forces after recent clashes with his fighters.

Mohamed Abdi Godane accused Ugandan and Burundian troops in the AU force of killing civilians during clashes in the capital Mogadishu.

He urged "the Somali people to unite to fight against the enemy of Allah," in an audio message sent late on Sunday to local media and obtained by AFP.

"We know that the people in Mogadishu were honoured with two previous victories. They won the war against the Americans and the Ethiopians, and the fight against AMISOM will be the final victory by God's will," he added.

The US withdrew its troops from Somalia after an ill-fated mission in the early 1990s, while Ethiopia pulled out in early 2009 following a two-year invasion. The AU troops, also known as AMISON, were then deployed.

"My message to the people of Uganda and Burundi is that you will be the targets of retaliation for the massacre of women, children and elderly Somalis in Mogadishu by your forces," said the leader of the al Qaeda-linked militia. "You will be held responsible for the killings your ignorant leaders and your soldiers are committing in Somalia," he said.

Bangladesh
Jamaat out to foil war trial
[Bangla Daily Star] The three detained Jamaat-e-Islami stalwarts yesterday disclosed during interrogation that they took up a three-month-long campaign across the country to foil the move of trying the war criminals of 1971.
That worked well... or not so well, depending on your perspective.
In the face of intensive interrogation, the Jamaat trio admitted that they allocated Tk 66 lakh for the campaign project for holding seminars and symposiums across the country, said a top police official who is interrogating the Jamaat leaders.

Interestingly, the Jamaat leaders, against whom there is ample evidence of atrocity during the Liberation War, have also formed a committee to prepare a list of war criminals.

"The committee has already prepared a list of 50 war criminals which mostly contains the names of Awami League leaders," said the official seeking anonymity.

For their campaign, Jamaat has also formed a 10-member committee headed by one of the party central leader who happens to be a Supreme Court lawyer. The committee's task is to make the campaign a success involving "intellectuals".
I don't think the Bangladeshi authorities are in the mood to let "intellectuals" think for them, at the moment. Perhaps in a few months, after all the real war criminals and their fellow-travelling miscreants have been jailed or executed.
Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami, its Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayedee are now being interrogated at the Detective Branch headquarters in the capital in connection with two cases filed with Paltan Police Station.

During interrogation, Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami was also questioned about the statement he made in 2004 that "there is no existence of Bangla Bhai, it is a fictitious character created by a section of the media".
The Mafia is a fiction, too. So that's ok.
Nizami initially denied making such remark. But soon the interrogators produced paper clippings and video footage recorded in 2004 and 2005, said the official.
Whoops! The memory hole isn't what it used to be.
"He then seemed a bit ashamed and chose to remain silent," said another official.

Nizami was the chief of Al-Badar, a militia formed with local collaborators of the then occupying Pakistani army to eliminate the intellectuals of Bangladesh in 1971.
No wonder they're obsessed with that whole "intellectuals" thingy.
About Bangla Bhai who was once a member of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Nizami denied his [Bangla Bhai] involvement with Shibir, a Jamaat-backed student body.

Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, the executed second-in command of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), in an interview with The Daily Star in May 2004 claimed that he was a Shibir member till 1995.

The interrogators also questioned the Jamaat trio about their alleged link with JMB. The trio made the mention of JMB Majlish-e-Sura member Shahed who is now studying at a university in Saudi Arabia.

"We wanted to know how Shahed got admitted to the university when none from Bangladesh is enrolled in the university without the recommendation of Jamaat leaders," said the official.

The interrogators also questioned former industries minister Nizami about 1,182 tonnes of rock sulphur, a bomb making ingredient, which was removed from Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Factory Ltd during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government through fake invoice.

JMB member Mohammad Salafi was the storekeeper of the fertiliser factory and the intelligence department believes that the stolen consignment was destined for JMB.

Asked if he had influenced the investigation of the consignment, Nizami denied the allegation.

Meanwhile, sources said JMB member Shaikat, now in DB custody, refused to offer prayers standing behind Nizami Sunday night saying that he would not offer his prayers standing behind a man who "wrongly explains" Islam.

Thank you for your comments, me/bangladeshi. We here at Rantburg been reading the English language news from Bangladesh (this article was from your very own The Daily Star) for at least five years. So either your argument is with the journalists and editors of the Daily Star, or you don't like the comments I inserted between the lines of the article. Still, were I Bangladeshi, I would be very upset that Pakistan's ISI was trying once again to take over, when the last time they did they killed millions and raped even more. But I'm funny that way -- perhaps it's an American housewife thing.

China-Japan-Koreas
China Sticks with N.Korea at UN
No kidding. Really. Floored me too ...
China is apparently blocking any term or phrase in the UN Security Council that would point directly to North Korea as the culprit that sank the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan in March.

The UNSC is debating how to hold the North to account for the torpedo attack. Already China finds that description too strong and wants it referred to as an "incident."

According to sources at the South Korean mission to the UN, the atmosphere at the UNSC was "tenser than expected" last Thursday, when China, which is North Korea's staunchest ally and as a permanent UNSC member has a veto, resisted any attempts to deal firmly with the North.

The North Korean UN mission has consistently used the term "incident." South Korea and China are reportedly engaged in a tug of war over the wording, which China consistently trying to water it down.

The UNSC has come up with nothing so far even though nearly a month has passed since the matter was referred to it and South and North Korea delivered separate briefings on the sinking. Even if a compromise is reached, any resulting UNSC chairman's statement is expected to lack teeth.

OK, How about this:

"Whomsoever was involved in sinking the Cheonan are a bunch of a-holes. And if they do it again, it will be OK for any country to bomb any government facility in Pyongyang."

NorK economy forecast to shrink this year
Caught you by surprise, huh ...
The question, how is that possible, occurs.
SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- North Korea's economy will likely continue to shrink this year as escalating tensions with the South are feared to seriously dent external trade with one of its key business partners, a report said Tuesday.

According to the report by the state-run Korea Development Institute, North Korea's economy will continue to shrink this year following a 0.9 percent contraction a year earlier. It did not provide an exact growth number for 2010.

The gloomy forecast is based mostly on frozen trade after the South cut most of business relations with Pyongyang following a probe indicating that the communist country's torpedo attack sank one of its naval ships in March, killing 46 sailors.

"The North is very likely to see its economy shrink this year," the report said. "Our outlook is based on a forecast that its external trade will likely post a setback."

South Korea accounts for more than 30 percent of the North's trade, serving as one of its key business partners along with China.
Good thing the North and South settled that war thingy then ...
It was all over but the shouting, once dear President Lincoln freed the slaves.
Seoul recently suspended most of its business deals with the North in a bid to voice protest against the deadly torpedo attack.

The economy of the reclusive country has been in a slump over the past few years. In 2006, it shrank 1.1 percent, followed by a 2.3 percent setback in 2007. The economy bounced back in 2008 by growing 3.7 percent but it proved to be short-lived by shrinking again last year.

A further contraction could prompt an economic crisis for the already-impoverished country, the report noted.

"North Korea's economy could be hurled into a very precarious situation," the report said. "As experienced by the nation in the mid-1990s, a crisis could be prompted more likely by consecutive contractions for relatively long period of time, rather than a one-off steep economic downturn."

Moderate Islam 'forced on Australian Muslims'
A spokesman for international Islamist group Hizb Ut-Tahrir has said democracy is an illusion and that the government is forcing moderate Islam on Australian Muslims.

Uthman Badar told the TODAY show the illusion of secular democracy "short-sold the people". "I think people have come to see that democracy is more of an illusion in that it secures the interests not of the people but of the economic elite," he said. "What we're saying is the secular democratic process has short-sold the people and it's better that people go back to the grassroots."

Mr Badar said the government was funding inter-faith dialogues and institutions in Sydney and Melbourne that promote moderate Islam.

"All people should accept that it's not acceptable for a state to tell people this is what you should believe and this is what you should not believe," he said. "The issue is the government should not be taking sides in saying 'This is the Islam we have chosen for you — it's a secular, apolitical, localised Islam'.

"'If you do anything else, here's the anti-terror laws, we're going to chuck you in jail.'"

More than 500 participants at a Hizb Ut-Tahrir conference in Western Sydney heard on Sunday that Australia was a "god-forsaken country" and that moderate Islam was a "perverted concoction of western governments".

The Grand Turk
Turkey to cut ties with Israel if no apology
[Al Arabiya Latest] Israel will never say sorry for defending itself, a senior government official said on Monday after Turkey demanded an apology for a deadly commando raid on an a Turkish aid ship bound for Gaza.

"Israel will never apologize for defending its citizens," the official told AFP. "Of course, we regret the loss of life but it was not the Israeli side that initiated the violence."

His remarks were made after Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu vowed Ankara would sever diplomatic ties with Israel unless it apologized over the operation which left nine people dead, all of them Turkish nationals.

" When you want an apology, you don't use threats or ultimatums "
Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor
But Israeli officials reacted angrily to Turkey's threats.

"When you want an apology, you don't use threats or ultimatums," foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told AFP.

"Everything leads us to believe that Turkey has another agenda in mind," he said, without giving further details.

Ties will severed

" Israel has three paths ahead: It either apologizes, or accepts the findings from an international commission investigating the raid, or Turkey will cut off ties "
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu
Davutoglu told Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper diplomatic ties will be severed unless Israel apologizes for the May 31 attack or admits the raid was unjust.

"Israel has three paths ahead: It either apologizes, or accepts the findings from an international commission investigating the raid, or Turkey will cut off ties," Davutoglu told Hurriyet newspaper.

Once Israel's closest Muslim ally, Turkey has said several times it wants Israel to apologize over the May 31 raid, pay compensation, agree to a U.N. inquiry into the incident and lift the blockade of 1.6 million Palestinians living in Gaza Strip.

Turkey has said before it was reviewing ties with the Jewish state. But Davutoglu's words are the first time Ankara has explicitly threatened to sever ties unless its demands are met.

Israel has opened its own inquiry.

"If this commission concludes that the raid was unjust and if they apologize, that will be sufficient," Davutoglu said, although he insisted that Turkey wanted compensation from the Jewish state.

Davutoglu met Israel's Trade and Industry Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer last week in Brussels in talks aimed at mending fences. Turkey said then it had told Israel what it should do to repair ties.

"The messages conveyed to Ben-Eliezer have reached the Israeli government. We will not wait forever for an answer," Davutoglu told Hurriyet's Monday edition. "It will be enough if their own commission rules that the raid was unfair and they apologise in line with the commission's verdict, but we have to see the verdict first."

Nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists were killed when Israeli commandos stormed the Turkish-flagged ship Mavi Marmara on May 31 as part of an operation to stop a relief aid flotilla headed for Israeli-blockaded Gaza.

Turkey withdrew its ambassador to Israel, cancelled joint military operations and barred Israeli military aircraft from Turkish airspace after the incident.

#6  Kick Turkey out of NATO. Bring Russia in. Hug the bear and move the West's defense lines north and eastward. We could put missiles on Iran's doorstep and play the Russia card against China while we're at it.

Given Europe's bankruptcy (even Britain's slashing military spending now) and Turkey's defection, I'm not sure we have any choice. NATO in its current form is a dead letter. Time to move it eastward-- all the way to Vladivostok.

#7  Lex, pardon moi, but let's wait until Russia becomes a real democracy, not a FSB mob run dictatorship masquerading as a "managed democracy".

#8  Neither Spain under Franco nor Portugal under Salazar nor Greece under the generals was a real democracy, and yet all of them were stalwart and useful NATO allies.

We're running out of options. NATO has just lost its 2nd largest military power. The financial crisis will force us -- Barry or no Barry, regardless who's in the White House-- to cut back our military commitments, as the UK is now doing. We don't have any choice but to find allies who can and will do more, and shoulder more of the burden. India and Russia are now far more important to this nation than any west European ally.
Posted by: lex || 07/06/2010 9:15 Comments || Top||

#9  None of them considered the NATO and the West the enemy nor propagandized their citizens to look upon us as the enemy (Though I sometimes wonder about the Greeks). Russians still believe they are the bully in the schoolyard and should run the place. At best you will have a Russia subverting NATO from the inside while trying to peel off their former thralls. A malevolent FSB run dictatorship (even if the fist is hidden in a velvet glove) will cause chaos in a consensus run NATO. It's hard enough to get anything done with just the French (who were only recently allowed to return to the decision making body).

Let the Russians decide what type of society they will first become. And some of NATO's newest Balkan members should not have been let in the last expansion round.

#10  I think it would be smarter to get the US out of NATO.

The problem with NATO is all the allies expect the US to do the heavy lifting. Leaving NATO for a while might fix that.

Great White North
Talk by controversial Islamic preacher cancelled
Controversial televangelist Zakir Naik's talk at North America's largest Islamic gathering Saturday night was considered by many to be "the heart of the journey," but two cancellations later, many are wondering why his voice was stilled.

After being banned from Canada for his controversial remarks, Naik was to have given Saturday's keynote address by live video conferencing at Journey of Faith, the Islamic gathering held on the weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. But some 15 minutes before Naik was due to speak his address was suddenly cancelled.

"He was asked not to talk, by who I cannot disclose," said conference chairman Said Ragaeh. "But we wanted him to talk. We wanted to hear from him," adding Naik was to clear up what the televangelist says are misconceptions about his past statements. Though not saying how much money the preacher from Mumbai was to be paid, Ragaeh said organizers would have saved "a lot" of the $1.5 million conference budget if Naik's name hadn't been on the bill. The conference will not receive a refund.

The 44-year-old native of India held a five-year, multiple-entry visa to Canada from a visit last year to present at the same conference. But officials from the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi telephoned Naik last month to say it been cancelled, a colleague of Naik's at the Islamic Research Foundation in Mumbai told the Star.

Earlier in June, Naik was barred from entering Britain because of disparaging
Disparaging. An interesting word choice, considering the reality...
comments he has made about Jews, women, gays and non-Muslims. In his past speeches Naik has advocated death to Muslims who leave Islam, as well as to homosexuals. In one YouTube video, he explains the rules on how a Muslim man can beat his wife.

Naik is also notorious for saying "If (Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden) is fighting the enemies of Islam, I am for him," in a YouTube video titled "Zakir Naik -- Specious explanation about bin Laden." Naik's brother, Naik Mohammad, has said the video clip was filmed in 1996, well before the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.

Some attendees of the conference believe Naik has been misrepresented in the media. Sisters Razia and Nadia Ferotan say the preacher is the "perfect representative for Islam," and that his talk was the reason they came from their home in Newcastle. "We were looking forward to it because of all the controversy. We have been watching his speeches online and he has been portrayed as someone he definitely is not and people are really taking his words and mixing them up," says Razia.

Attendee Noman Bokhari says the cancellation is "big time disappointing." He says conference goers were looking forward to Naik's speech for the same reason he's not welcome in Canada. "Whoever's speaking truth is not welcome at places sometimes these days," he says.

On Sunday, contact information forms were being distributed so that attendees could keep abreast of developments in Naik's banning from Canada.

CIA and Pakistan locked in aggressive spy battles
A Pakistani man approached CIA officers in Islamabad last year, offering to give up secrets of his country's closely guarded nuclear program. To prove he was a trustworthy source, he claimed to possess spent nuclear fuel rods.

But the CIA had its doubts. Before long, the suspicious officers had concluded that Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, was trying to run a double agent against them.

#1  Many former CIA officials believe a lack of experience among agency officers led to the bombing in Khost, Afghanistan, last year that killed seven CIA employees.

Experience? They all went to the same "farm." How about excessive zeal by the site lead to provide results to the administration?

Taliban justice in Kerala: Lecturer’s hand cut off
In a sign of growing Islamic fundamentalism in Kerala, Muslim fanatics in Kerala on Sunday chopped off the right hand of a college lecturer, accusing him of setting a question paper with a derogatory reference to the Prophet.

In this horrific instance of Talibanism, Lecturer T J Joseph who was returning home from church with his mother and sister in Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, was accosted by the attackers. The family had just got into their car when a van pulled up in front. Around eight people armed with swords and knives emerged and pulled out Joseph after smashing the windscreen. They then chopped off his right hand and stabbed him in the left thigh," said Joseph's sister, Mary Stella, a nun. "When we tried to prevent them, they attacked me and and our mother before exploding bombs and fleeing."

A police team recovered the severed hand from the compound of a house about 200m away. The 52-year-old lecturer was rushed to a private hospital where his condition was serious. Police recovered the van in which the fanatics reached the scene. Two men, said to be activists of the Popular Front, a new incarnation of the hardline National Democratic Front, have also been taken into custody. Special police squads are searching sensitive areas in and around the town.

"Personnel from this district and neighbouring places are working as a team and we'll nab the assailants soon," said IG B Sandhya. In March this year, Islamic outfits had carried out protests against Joseph, who was a lecturer in the church-run Newman college in Thodupuzha in Idukki district over a portion in the Malayalam question paper for an internal examination for BCom students. They claimed that the question paper insulted the Prophet. The college later suspended Joseph who had set the questions and a criminal case was registered against him. The case is pending trial.

Hafiz Saeed barred from leaving Pakistan
Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, has been barred from travelling abroad after the Pakistan government banned 23 terror groups operating under new names after being outlawed.

The Punjab government directed the police to keep a strict vigil on 1,690 office-bearers and workers of the banned outfits. The provincial home department said Saeed's movements have not been restricted, but he and his two associates have been barred from travelling abroad. Their accounts have been frozen and they will not be able to get arms licences, Dawn reported Tuesday.

Militants carrying out major attacks belong to Lahore
[Dawn] Police say a group of militants taken into custody in connection with all major attacks in Lahore and other parts of the country belongs to the provincial metropolis.

They are involved in recruiting terrorists, planning, gathering information and storing explosives and sophisticated weapons at different places in the city and its outskirts and providing logistic support to other groups.

Their future plan was to create anarchy in society and unrest among different sects besides carrying out more attacks on important political personalities, sensitive agencies, offices working on law and order and sensitive installations.

Addressing a press conference at Qilla Gujjar Singh Police Lines on Monday, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Muhammad Aslam Tareen said that terror suspects identified as Rizwan, Abbas, Haroon Saeed, Umair, Umer and Haji Javed Alam were detained from different localities of the city by teams of Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA).

He said all of them got training in Afghanistan
In Afghanistan? Seriously?
and a majority of them acted as facilitators. The suspects informed the investigators that five to six separate militant groups were carrying out terror attacks in Pakistan.

The suspects disclosed that they were involved in terror attacks on Rawalpindi's Parade Lane Mosque, Karachi's Ashura procession, worship places of Ahmadis in Lahore's Garhi Shahu and Model Town and Lahore's Moon Market, Jinnah Hospital, Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Samanabad.
They have been busy lads, indeed.
CCPO Tareen said suicide attacks on Data Darbar Complex were a conspiracy to provoke misunderstandings among different sects and disintegrate the country.

Police teams began investigation with two suicide bombers, Moawia, alias Asmattullah, alias Moaaz, of Lahore, and Abdullah, alias Muhammad, of Karachi, who were caught from Ahmadis' worship place in Model Town on May 28, 2010.

The police also seized two motorcycles from the spot but their engine and chassis numbers had been removed. The investigators with the help of the Forensic Science Laboratory found the chassis numbers of the motorbikes.

Both motorcycles were purchased from Bahawalpur United Company by using the identity card of Gulzar Hussain, alias Muneeb.

Abdullah informed the police that he had come to Lahore from Karachi by a local company's bus under ticket name Jafaar on May 22. He carried a cell phone which was taken away by his accomplice Hafeez, alias Shah, before the attack.

The police contacted the bus company's Karachi office about seat No 10 and got a cell phone number which was being used by Hafeez and Rana, who masterminded the attacks.

They would use the number for conversation with girls in an attempt to deceive law-enforcement agencies.

The police also received a new number from one of the girls which was being used in new terror network. After getting all information, police with the help of intelligence agencies busted the network and arrested several of its members.

To a question, the CCPO said that all federal intelligence agencies were sharing secret information with the Lahore police on time.

The arrested suspects had concealed 18,000 kilogrammes explosives at different places and Javed Alam, of Bund Road, Islampura, had given the suspects his rented house to stay. Umair, of Jiya Moosa, and Umer would use their identity cards to facilitate others.

Meanwhile, CCPO Traeen told Dawn that 18,000kg explosives recovered from two weapon-manufacturing units in outskirts of Lahore would be destroyed with the help of Pakistan Army. He said at least three or four members of the terror network were still at large.

He said two suspects identified as Haroon Saeed, of Shafeeqabad, and Rizwan, of Mohni Road, Lower Mall, would recruit militants and suicide bombers and mastermind terror attacks.

SUSPENDED: The inspector-general of police has suspended from service the Lower Mall circle DSP while the CCPO has suspended the Lower Mall SHO, Data Ganj Bakhsh shrine police check-post in-charge and two constables in connection with terror attacks on the shrine.

The five have been suspended for poor security arrangements which led to the entry of two suicide bombers into the shrine.

25 PPP lawmakers allied with SSP in 2008 polls
In a fresh spat of counter-allegations for having political alliances with militant organisations, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Monday alleged that 25 parliamentarians of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) negotiated with the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) to gather votes during the 2008 general elections.

Levelling the charges during a press conference at the party's office, PML-N spokesman Siddiqul Farooq claimed, "Twenty-five PPP parliamentarians, including the foreign minister, information minister, and the National Assembly deputy speaker, made their way to the House with the political support and vote bank of the banned militant outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba. The negotiations with the banned organisation were held by the PPP leadership with a nod from President Asif Zardari."

After winning the elections, Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Jamshed Dasti separately visited SSP General Secretary Dr Khadim Hussain Dhillon to thank him for the support extended by his organisation.

According to the list provided by the PML-N, 16 of the 25 accused PPP MNAs belong to the Punjab.

Distanced: However, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal distanced himself from Farooq's allegations, terming them "his personal views" and added that it was not the party's official stance.

"I don't believe the SSP has such a significant vote bank that mainstream political parties seek their support to win elections," the PML-N information secretary told Daily Times.

However, when contacted again by this scribe, Farooq insisted that it was not his personal opinion but the party's official stance.

Govt makes conditional talks offer to Taliban
The government on Monday offered to hold talks with militant groups provided that they lay down arms and accept the writ of state, after the country's top civilian leadership pondered over the question of how to stop deadly terrorist attacks on civilians at a high-level meeting.

Addressing reporters following the inter-provincial meeting on law and order, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira and Interior Minister Rehman Malik renewed the government's call for talks with Taliban militants ready to renounce violence.

"One thing is very clear that they will have to accept the writ of the state and surrender before the government. Our doors are open for negotiations with those who will surrender before the government," Kaira said.

He also announced that the government is reactivating the National Counter Terrorism Authority to deal with the threat of terrorism.

Both Kaira and Malik also vowed to restart the madrassa reforms programme, which was initiated by the previous government. However, it was shelved after failing to yield any positive result.

Malik ruled out any military operation in Punjab and said that whatever action was required, it would be taken by the Punjab government. "The federal agencies will provide the provincial government all the necessary assistance," he said.

He said the nexus among the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and al Qaeda was responsible for the recent gruesome terrorist attacks in the country.

Kurds down with coalition between Iraqiya-Dawlat al-Qanoon
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Kurdistan Alliance does not object to a potential coalition between the Al-Iraqiya Alliance and Dawlat al-Qanoon Alliance, President Massoud Barzani of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region said from Cairo, Egypt.

“We don’t object to a coalition between the two alliances, provided that it does not marginalize others,” Barzani told the press.

He noted that the Kurdistan Alliance will not be part of the problem, but part of the solution to form Iraq’s new government.

Obama Admin to Israel: "Apologize to Turkey!"
H/T Hotair
The
(Turkish)
threat
(to cut off relations with Israel)
came as Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prepares to meet Tuesday in Washington with President Obama. A Western diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity before the foreign minister made his comments, said Obama plans to press the Israeli leader to apologize to defuse tensions.

"The president is very concerned about the breakdown in Turkish-Israeli relations," the diplomat said. Asked if he thought Obama could persuade Netanyahu to apologize, the diplomat added: "I'm sure he'll give it the college try."

Senior Obama administration officials would neither confirm nor deny the president's intentions for the meeting with Netanyahu.

#2  Just a reminder: over 2,000,000 Christians have either been coerced out of or voluntarily left their Holy Lands since 1947. Muslims are the worst of all ethnic cleansers.

Another reminder: only Muslims are allowed in their own "holy lands" (al-haramain). We should set up a Muslim free zone, 200 miles around Temple Mount. Rabbi Kahane was right.

#11  The best bet for Israel is to quietly split the Turkish military from its government. Start providing them political intelligence that sours them on Erdogen and his party.

While it might not make the Turkish military friendly to Israel, it might give them pause if asked to attack Israel, or to put their butts on the line to provoke Israel.

Abbas: Hamas trying to fire rockets from West Bank
Hamas is attempting to improve its ability to fire rockets into Israel from the West Bank, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told Jordanian reporters in Amman on Monday, Army Radio reported.

"We catch armed cells and warehouses full of weapons that also contain rockets almost every week," said Abbas.

He added that the PA would not allow any military activity in the West Bank.

"The West Bank was completely destroyed during the Intifada. We will not allow that to happen again."
He's a lover, not a fighter, you see. His plan is to get President Obama to force Israel to give him what he wants, in the spirit of Palestinian-American friendship.
It's the Gandhi approach. If the Paleos had been smart they would have done this forty years ago instead of forming the PLO.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Bill Clinton opposed to assault on Iran
[Iran Press TV Latest] Former US President Bill Clinton says he believes military action against Iran over its nuclear energy program is not the right course of action to take.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Clinton said he thinks Iranians will all become alienated and oppose the West if military action is taken against the country.
Whereas now they love the West but are powerless to keep the Mullahs from doing terrible things, so let's do nothing to change the situation.
He also raised the possibility that the decision to impose sanctions on Iran may not lead to any concrete results.

He went on to say that Iran was the only country in the world where the people voted six times during his presidency, adding that Iranians elected the most progressive president twice.
*speechless*
Clinton's comments contradict earlier statements by US officials that Iranians are not given the right to freely elect their president.

While the US possesses and has used nuclear weapons in the past, Washington, in a politically-motivated move, has imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, which does not possess nuclear weapons and does not seek to produce such weapons.
I forgot, it's an Iran PressTV article. That's why the journalist has written such patent nonsense.
In addition, the International Atomic Energy Agency has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities and has never discovered evidence of diversion.
That's because the evidence was hidden, silly journalist!

'Israel preparing to occupy Lebanon'
Israel troops are conducting military drills to get prepared for being deployed in Lebanon, in a move Tel Aviv says is aimed at preventing "rocket attacks by Hezbollah," Israeli sources say.
Say Nasrullah, you may recall that Israel did that once. Successfully too, successful enough that your pal Yassar fled to Tunisia.
Israel is conducting drills at its Elyakim training base, near Haifa, to simulate attacks on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, Haaretz reported.

An Israeli colonel told Haaretz that the US military officers had advised Israel to deploy its soldiers in Lebanon during the 33-day war in 2006, hinting that Israel will do so in any offensive on Lebanon in the future.

The Elyakim base is covered with many simulated minefields and camouflaged bunkers. Israeli troops are exercising to pass those spots and find "rocket sites," the report added.

According to the plan, Israeli troops will then be transported to Golan Heights by helicopters to be trained conducting other operations.
Like raiding Damascus to pinch the Hamas and Hezbie bigshots. Just sayin' ...
Israel has UAVs, too. They don't need to go there in person, when they'll be so busy with other things.

#2  If Israel goes to Lebanon, it should be with the express purpose of driving all Shiites into Syria. Hezbollah exists with the excuse that they are a self-defense force for the Shiites. And the Shiite are strong enough so that the rest of the Lebanese have to embrace them.

However, if the Israelis drove them out of Lebanon entirely, then closed the border with Syria, the Lebanese would probably adopt the new, Shiite-less status quo, and permanently bar the Shiites from returning.

/Yeah, I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one.
