Afghanistan
UNICEF: 460 Afghan Children Killed in First Half of 2021
[ToloNews] At least 460 children were killed due to relentless violence in the first six months of the current year in Afghanistan, the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
Children’s Funds (UNICEF) said in its latest report.

The report also cited the killing of "nine members of one family, including four girls and two boys," who were reportedly killed on Thursday morning, "when an explosive remnant of war detonated inside a home in Kunduz."

According to the report, three other children were maimed.

The waves of four decades of conflict have affected the lives of thousands of people in Afghanistan.

Hibatullah, 6, lost his leg because of the conflict and said that he is now dependent on an artificial leg.

"My son was hit with a bullet in a clash in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
. He was hospitalized for a long time and then his leg was amputated," said Abdullah, Hibatullah’s father. "We were very hopeless. He is now under treatment by the Red Thingy and (they) made an artificial leg for him."

"Every day, 10 to 15 children who are brought here struggle with brain freeze. It is very dangerous in the current situation and this is all due to war and chemical materials that have affected the children," said Mohammad Fahim, a therapist.

UNICEF’s statement expressed concern over the condition of the Afghan children.

"We are also concerned about the number of children killed by bombs so far this year. The death of one child is heartbreaking," said Samantha Mort, chief of communication, advocacy & civic engagement for UNICEF.

The UN organization underscored poverty and malnutrition as another two challenges that the Afghan children have been struggling with for years now.

"We are extremely concerned about the situation for children in Afghanistan at the moment" said Heather Barr, Human Rights Watch's associate director of the women's rights division. "It is a very desperate situation... the most pressing issue is hunger and malnutrition. There are 3.1 million who are severely malnourished in Afghanistan and the United Nation says that one million of them are at risk to death."

Somalia: US places $6 million bounty on top Al-Shabaab leaders
[Garowe] The United States has renewed traditional diplomatic ways of hunting for al-Shabaab
...... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord...
Death Eaters, an al-Qaeda linked group that still enjoys support within Central and Southern Somalia, in the latest concerted effort to destroy the Death Eaters.

State Department announced that any member of the public who can give information on the whereabouts of top al-Shabaab leaders will get $6 million. Four al-Shabaab leaders linked to attacks in Kenya and Somalia have been identified.

Those in the list include Abu Ubaidah, Mahad Karate, Fuad Mohammed Khalaf, and Jafar and are said to be brass hats at the Somalia-based terror group. The officials run different departments within the group.

Abu Ubaidah whose real name is Omar Ahmed Direye has led the Death Eater group for just over a year since al-Shabaab's former leader, Ahmed Abdi aw-Mohammed [known as Godane], was killed in a U.S. Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
. His whereabouts still remain unknown.

For over a decade, al-Shabaab has caused havoc in Kenya and Somalia under Ubaidah's leadership since 2015, most notably with a massacre at Garissa University in Kenya, in which 148 people were killed and the 2017 Mogadishu twin truck bombings where 587 people died.

In September 2015 al-Shabaab announced the appointment of Godane's successor naming Ahmad Umar Abu Ubaidah, described by Shabaab sources as a close lieutenant to Godane -- although the name is seen as likely to be a pseudonym.

The group also vowed to avenge the death of Godane and said they would continue their fight to topple the country's internationally-backed government.

Mahad Karate, also known as Abdirahman Mohammed Warsame reportedly serves as the terror group's shadow deputy leader. Karate has some command responsibility for the Amniyat, al-Shabaab’s intelligence and security wing, as well as the group’s finances, which have been a center of controversy in recent days.

The Amniyat plays a key role in the execution of suicide kabooms and liquidations in Somalia, Kenya, and other countries in the region, and provides logistical support for al-Shabaab’s terrorist activities.

For Fuad Mohammed Khalaf, he has allegedly facilitated financial support to al-Shabaab; in May 2008, he held two fundraising events for al-Shabaab at mosques in Kismaayo, Somalia.

In April 2008, Khalaf and several other individuals directed vehicle-borne bomb attacks on Æthiopian bases and Transitional Federal Government [TFG] elements in Mogadishu, Somalia.

In May 2008, Khalaf and a group of fighters attacked and captured a cop shoppe in Mogadishu, killing and wounding several soldiers. Later in 2010, Khalaf was designated by the U.S. Department of the Treasury under Executive Order 13536 for contributing to the violence and the deterioration of security in Somalia.

Jafar also known as Amar, is an al-Shabaab controller and has served as Abdikadir Mohammed Abdikadir's deputy, and is reportedly missing one eye. All the four al-Shabaab leaders have never been seen in public.

The decision by the US comes at the time Washington is considering to dispatch elite troops to the Horn of Africa nation, about 1 year after their withdrawal. The US has been a major security partner of Somalia.

New Alliance of Resistance to Government Forms in Ethiopia
[Telegram] Nine groups opposed to the Ethiopian government announced the creation of a united alliance aimed at changing the government in the country. The agreement between the oppositionists was signed on Friday in Washington. Meanwhile, the US Embassy is now urging all of its citizens to leave the country.

The armed conflict between the central government of Ethiopia and the authorities of the autonomous region of Tigray, who are accused of separatism, has continued since November 2020. Both Abiy Ahmed's Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa and Tigray authorities from the National Liberation Front (NPLF) question each other's legitimacy.

On Friday, nine opposition groups, some of which are armed, have announced they will join forces against the Ethiopian government to form the United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist Forces (UFEFCF). These include the Oromo Liberation Army, in addition to the NFOT. Some of the groups have armed fighters.

"The front is being created to reverse the devastating effects of Abiy's rule [...] and in recognition of the great need to work together and join forces to ensure a safe transition in the country," Reuters quoted the new front as saying.

One of the organizers of the alliance told The Associated Press thato The United Front will "establish a transitional government" and then "begin to meet and communicate with countries, diplomats and international actors in Ethiopia and abroad." At the same time, the alliance is both political and military, but it had no contacts with the government of Abiy Ahmed.

The agreement between the oppositionists was signed on Friday in Washington.

"Of course, we prefer there to be a peaceful and orderly transition with Abiy removed," a spokesman for the Oromo Liberation Army told AP.

"The goal is to be as inclusive as possible. We know that this transition requires the participation of all stakeholders," he added.

An Ethiopian government spokeswoman said on Twitter that opposition groups had the opportunity to resolve their differences in elections earlier this year, and all those groups that rejected this option "cannot be in favor of democratization."

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on Twitter for an end to the war in Ethiopia and an immediate start of peace talks without any preconditions. US Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman was in Addis Ababa on Thursday, where he met with Defense Secretary, Treasury Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister, and African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki.

But it is not known if the meeting of the American envoy will take place with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia himself, Abiy, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The UN Security Council convened a meeting on Ethiopia on Friday at the request of the diplomatic representatives of Ireland, Kenya, Niger, Tunisia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Alisa Vairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Genocide Prevention, warned of the escalation of the conflict and the spread of violence to Kenya.

The European Union also called for a ceasefire, but added that this was not enough and did not rule out the imposition of sanctions.

"It would be much more spectacular if the European countries got together and talked about the consequences."

On Thursday, the Ethiopian government compared Tigray's secessionist forces to a "rat sticking out of a hole" on social media and said Ethiopia is close to "bury the forces of evil." The state of emergency has been in effect in the country since Tuesday.

A spokesman for the Tigray Liberation Front, however, also said on Thursday that his forces were already in the city of Kemis, 325 kilometers from Addis Ababa. Representatives of the central government question the territorial gains of the separatists.

[AlAhram] Libya's presidential council has suspended Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush from her duties and barred her from travel, a spokeswoman said Saturday, days before a major international conference.

The council opened an inquiry into alleged "administrative breaches" by Mangoush, spokeswoman Najla Weheba told the Libya Panorama television channel, while El-Marsad news website close to eastern-based Khalifa Haftar

Clemency Request for Guantanamo Inmate 'Enlightening,' Hambali's Lawyer Says
[BenarNews] A Guantanamo Bay inmate’s testimony before a U.S. military tribunal last week about being tortured at a secret CIA site and the jury’s clemency recommendation tied to that account may have implications for the trial of three Southeast Asian terror suspects incarcerated at the notorious prison, lawyers and activists say.

Majid Khan, who acknowledged having served as a money courier leading up to the 2003 bombing of the Marriott hotel in Jakarta, was sentenced to 26 years in prison last week. Before his sentencing, he testified in graphic detail about torture he experienced at an overseas "black site" run by the Central Intelligence Agency after his arrest that year until he was transferred to the U.S. military prison in Cuba in 2006.

"I thought I was going to die," Khan, a Pak national, said while reading from a 39-page statement during his sentencing hearing at Guantanamo on Oct. 28, according to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. "The more I cooperated and told them, the more I was tortured."

Baby Handed to US Troops Amid Airlift Still Missing
[ToloNews] It was a split second decision. Mirza Ali Ahmadi and his wife Suraya found themselves and their five children on Aug. 19 in a chaotic crowd outside the gates of the Kabul airport in Afghanistan when a U.S. soldier, from over the tall fence, asked if they needed help.

Fearing their two-month old baby Sohail would get crushed in the melee, they handed him to the soldier, thinking they would soon get to the entrance, which was only about 16 feet (5 meters) away.

But at that moment, Mirza Ali said, the Taliban

Afghan Refugees Continue Sit-In Protest In Indonesia
[ToloNews] A number of Afghan asylum seekers have begun a sit-in protest outside the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) building in Indonesia over what they said is a delay in processing their asylum applications.

The asylum seekers said they have been protesting for the past four days, but so far UNHCR has not told them anything about their applications.

The asylum seekers said they have been in Indonesia for several years waiting to be resettled in a host country, but their applications have not been processed.

"The refugees have started a peaceful protest outside the UNHCR building. This is the fourth night that we are here, and so far we have not heard from the UNHCR," a protester said.

Indonesia is not a party to the 1951 Convention relating to the status of refugees and thus serves as a transit country for the refugees.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Finnish charity ends ties with Palestinian group after terror designation
[IsraelTimes] Felm says it hasn’t seen evidence that funds given to Defense for Children International-Paleostine were used improperly, but warns of potential banking sanctions

A Christian charity organization in Finland has decided to end ties with a Paleostinian rights group after it was blacklisted by Israel for alleged terror links.

The executive director of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission, or Felm, said Friday the group hasn’t seen evidence that the 30,000 euros ($34,650) it has provided annually since 2015 to Defense for Children International-Paleostine (DCIP) was used improperly.

"We have actively monitored the use of the money and it has been used for work advancing children’s rights," Rolf Steffansson told Rooters.

He said, however, that Felm could no longer work with DCIP after Israel designated it and five other rights groups as terror organizations, citing potential banking sanctions.

"It could have impacted the work we do in 30 countries through banking services for example," he said.

DCIP, which denies the Israeli allegations, has asked Felm to reconsider the move.

"We have been subject to escalating delegitimization and disinformation campaigns advanced by an international network of bad boy groups with the support of Israeli government ministries," Khaled Quzmarm DCIP’s director-general, told Rooters via a lawyer.

DCIP also said none of its other donors have indicated they will cut off funding.

DCIP was one of six Paleostinian civil society organizations designated last month as terrorist groups, with Israel saying they were tied to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine, a secular, leftist political movement with an armed wing that has carried out deadly attacks against Israelis. Israel and Western countries consider the PFLP a terrorist organization.

The other designated groups are the al-Haq human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
group, the Addameer rights group, the Bisan Center for Research and Development, the Union of Paleostinian Women’s Committees and the Union of Agricultural Work Committees.

The groups, some of which have close ties to rights groups in Israel and abroad, deny the allegations. They say the terror designation is aimed at muzzling critics of Israel’s half-century military control of territories the Paleostinians want for their future state.

Israel has faced scrutiny over the evidence detailing the organization’s alleged terror links, which the Shin Bet security service shared with European governments. Israel may have additional evidence that has not been made public.

In a briefing to news hounds last month, a senior Israeli official insisted that the intelligence connecting the PFLP to the organizations was "ironclad." He said the material presented to the US on the matter included "unequivocal evidence that includes video footage, photos, payment receipts that tie the said groups to the backing of terror activity."

Port Victims' Families to Sue Mezher as Activist Group Files Recusal Suit
[An Nahar] The lawyers of the families of the Beirut port blast victims are preparing to take a host of legal measures Monday against Court of Appeals judge Habib Mezher, amid calls for the Higher Judicial Council to penalize him for "committing a blatant violation" and to refer him to judicial inspection, media reports said on Saturday. The Mutahiddoun activist group meanwhile said that its lawyer Rami Ollaiq has filed a recusal lawsuit against Mezher before the Court of Appeals, noting that the judge "has political connections directly linked to the figures who have been summoned for interrogation, which allows for legitimate suspicion over his role and the motives of his decision in terms of the lack of objectivity, neutrality and impartiality."

Mezher sparked controversy after he started looking into a recusal lawsuit filed against Beirut port blast investigator Judge Tarek Bitar. Court of Appeals head Habib Rizkallah later announced that he had "exclusively" tasked Mezher with handling a recusal lawsuit against Court of Appeals judge Nassib Elia, which is separate from the one filed against Bitar.

Bitar's probe into the port case was suspended on Thursday after Mezher notified him of a lawsuit filed against him by ex-minister Youssef Fenianos. Mezher also asked Bitar to hand over the details of the case to enable the court to review the lawsuit.

The Beirut-based rights group Legal Agenda warned that Mezher's request to see the full content of the investigation violates the secrecy of the probe. The group also said that Mezher's known opinions critical of Bitar may constitute bias.

According to media reports, Mezher is close to Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and the Amal Movement, which both have called for Bitar's removal and launched a fierce campaign against him over alleged selectivity in his summonings.
