F-16s Intercept Civilian Aircraft near Mar-a-Lago
[Epoch Times] Air Force fighter jets on March 9 intercepted a civilian aircraft that flew in restricted airspace near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement.

The incident took place as Trump finished a round of golf at his West Palm Beach golf course. It was also the second time in 48 hours that F-16 fighter jets from the Continental U.S. NORAD region responded to such an aviation violation over Palm Beach, Florida, the aerospace command stated.

On March 1, NORAD F-16 fighter jets intercepted three civilian aircraft violating airspace restrictions over Palm Beach at different intervals. The fighter jets fired flares at two of the aircraft, and all three were escorted out of the restricted airspace.

NORAD stated that it has responded to "over 20 tracks of interests" entering the restricted zone in Palm Beach since Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

Tanker hit by Yemen’s Houthis in August now through Suez Canal, with environmental disaster averted
[IsraelTimes] A Greek tanker set ablaze by Yemeni rebels with more than a million barrels of oil aboard has been safely towed through the Suez Canal, the waterway’s authority says.

“The oil tanker Sounion was successfully towed by four tugboats” through the Egyptian waterway and was now “heading to Greece,” Suez Canal Authority chief Osama Rabie says in a statement.

The Sounion was attacked in the Red Sea last August by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, catching fire and losing power before its 25-member crew were rescued by a French frigate.

Its cargo could have created a catastrophic environmental disaster.

Had the Sounion broken up or exploded, it could have caused an oil spill four times larger than that caused by the Exxon Valdez in 1989 off Alaska, experts said at the time.

Houthis have attacked ships in the key commercial waterways of the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea with drones and missiles, saying they are targeting vessels linked to Israel, the United States and Britain.

Australian police: Organized crime network faked synagogue bomb attack plot, 14 arrested
[IsraelTimes] Deputy national security commissioner says suspects prepared explosives, then informed authorities with the aim of ‘changing their criminal status’

An alleged plan to attack a Sydney synagogue using a trailer packed with explosives was fabricated by an organized crime network in order to divert police resources, Australian authorities said Monday.

Police in January found explosives in a trailer, or caravan, that could have created a blast wave of 40 meters (130 feet), along with the address of a Sydney synagogue.

But officers said Monday that the discovery was part of a "criminal con job." The ease with which the trailer was found along with the lack of a detonator suggests there was never any intention to attack Jewish targets.

"The caravan was never going to cause a mass casualty event but instead was concocted by criminals who wanted to cause fear for personal benefit," Krissy Barrett, the Australian Federal Police’s deputy commissioner for national security, told a news conference.

"Almost immediately, experienced Sherlocks... believed that the caravan was part of a fabricated terrorism plot — essentially a criminal con job," she said.

Out of an "abundance of caution," police followed up terrorism-related tipoffs over the purported plot rather than making public their belief that the information was fake, Barrett said.

Organized criminals in Australia and offshore contrived the scheme, she said.

"Put simply, the plan was the following: organize for someone to buy a caravan, place it with explosives and written material of antisemitic nature, leave it in a specific location, and then, once that happened, inform law enforcement about an impending terror attack against Jewish Australians," Barrett said.

Police suspect that the person "pulling the strings" hired small-time Mister Bigs to carry out the hoax in the hope of getting "changes to their criminal status," she said.

Barrett declined to elaborate on the motivation but said criminals sometimes seek to leverage information to get a reduced jail sentence or other benefits.

Jewish group expressed alarm at the revelation.

"The possible role of organized crime in orchestrating major antisemitic attacks adds a chilling new element to the antisemitism crisis," Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said in a statement. "Synagogues have been burned, childcare centers have been burned, and whether it’s been done for financial gain or as part of an antisemitic ideology or movement, in either case, it’s equally terrifying."

Ryvchin said the revelations hadn’t brought any great relief to the Jewish community.

"Now we have organized crime seeking to intimidate and terrorise the Jewish community for some unknown and bewildering reasons. It seems to raise more questions than it answers. It certainly won’t lead to a mass outpouring of relief on the part of the Jewish community," Ryvchin said.

"Part of the motivation for this attack was to install fear in the Jewish community, which has been on knife’s edge since the seventh of October, and we need to remain vigilant," said Jeremy Leibler, president of the Zionist Federation of Australia, referring to the Hamas

Police have yet to make any arrests in relation to the planning of the fabricated plot, but have gone public with the information in order to provide comfort to the Jewish community in Sydney, Dave Hudson, New South Wales Police deputy commissioner, told the news conference.

"It was about causing chaos within the community, causing threat, causing angst, diverting police resources away from their day jobs, to have them focus on matters that would allow them to get up to or engage in other criminal activity," Hudson said.

Police are investigating a suspect involved in an organized crime network, he added.

Meanwhile,

detectives probing a string of antisemitic incidents across Sydney — though not the trailer incident specifically — have arrested and charged 14 people, the New South Wales Police said on Tuesday.

The charges include 65 offenses, including taking part in a "criminal group," arson and destroying property, the department said.

None of those arrested displayed "any form of antisemitic ideology," according to Hudson.

Investigations into attacks on two Sydney synagogues, the fire bombings of cars, and the spraying of "abhorrent graffiti" on cars and houses indicated it was only "a very, very small group — and potentially one individual behind all these matters," he said.

Police suspect the same "individual or individuals" were behind both the antisemitic attacks and the trailer hoax, Hudson said.

Leibler thanked police for "taking this seriously and for making these arrests."

"While on the one hand, the findings provide some relief to the Jewish community, it does not take away from the fact that we’ve had a kaboom of antisemitism in this country," he added.

Australia has suffered a spate of antisemitic attacks since the start of the war, with homes, schools, synagogues and vehicles targeted by vandalism and arson, drawing the ire of the country’s traditional ally Israel.

The number of anti-Jewish incidents in the country quadrupled in the year after the October 7 attack, according to data from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

In December 2024, New South Wales launched Strike Force Pearl, whose team includes counter-terrorism and special tactics officers, to investigate antisemitic hate crimes in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, following an arson attack on the Adass Synagogue.

Australia’s federal police also launched Operation Avalite to investigate the surge in antisemitic crimes.

Australian police arrest 14 members of organized crime ring linked to antisemitic attacks

[IsraelTimes] Australian police say they have charged 14 members of an organized crime ring accused of menacing the country with attacks dressed up as antisemitic hate crimes.

Jewish neighborhoods in Sydney city have in recent months seen synagogues daubed in antisemitic graffiti, buildings firebombed in the dead of night and cars torched by vandals.

Although the crime wave stoked fears about rising antisemitic in Australia, police said they no longer believed many of these incidents were driven by “ideology.”

Instead, police said it appeared to be an attempt by organized criminals to gain favor by carrying out high-profile attacks — and then tipping off authorities later.

New South Wales Police said today that 14 people had been arrested and charged with 65 offences, including taking part in a “criminal group,” arson and destroying property.

“None of the individuals we have arrested… have displayed any form of antisemitic ideology,” NSW Police deputy commissioner David Hudson said yesterday evening after a series of raids.

“I think these organized crime figures have taken an opportunity to play off the vulnerability of the Jewish community,” he added.

Judge blocks anti-Israel Columbia agitator Mahmoud Khalil from deportation as politicians come to his defense
[FoxNews] DHS says Khalil 'led activities aligned to Hamas'

A federal judge in Manhattan ruled that anti-Israel agitator Mahmoud Khalil is not to be deported "unless and until the Court orders otherwise," on Monday.

Khalil, who led anti-Israel protests and encampments on Columbia University's campus, was taken into custody on the Upper West Side in New York City on Saturday. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said he was a former Columbia graduate student who "led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization."

The judge ordered a hearing for Wednesday. Khalil's lawyer also filed a motion that he be returned to New York City while the case plays out. According to ICE, Khalil is currently being held at the Lasalle Detention facility in Louisiana. Khalil's lawyer has insisted their client was detained illegally and should be released.

His attorney, Amy E. Greer, released a new statement Monday evening, saying he is "healthy and his spirits are undaunted by his predicament."

The statement continued: "The remarks by government officials, including the President, on social media only confirm the purpose – and illegality – of Mahmoud's detention. He was chosen as an example to stifle entirely lawful dissent in violation of the First Amendment. While tomorrow or thereafter the government may cite the law or process, that toothpaste is out of the tube and irreversibly so. The government’s objective is as transparent as it is unlawful, and our role as Mahmoud’s lawyers is to ensure it does not prevail."

Khalil's wife also spoke out in a statement, calling for her husband to be released.

"Mahmoud is my rock, he is my home, and he is my happy place…," she wrote. "For everyone reading this, I urge you to see Mahmoud through my eyes as a loving husband and the future father to our baby. I need your help to bring Mahmoud home, so he is here beside me, holding my hand in the delivery room as we welcome our first child into this world. Please release Mahmoud Now."
Hitler was a loving boyfriend to whatshername, and very fond of children and dogs — Aryan ones, anyway. That didn’t in any way offset the fact that he was a totalitarian genocidaire. Separtely, why do we still have no inkling of Mrs. Khalil’s name and background?
Politicians have also spoken out in defense of Khalil. "Squad" member Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., criticized his arrest, calling the incident an "egregious violation of constitutional rights."

They were revoking his student visa. Well, guess what? He doesn't have a student visa," Tlaib claimed. "He's a green card holder, legal permanent resident."

"Now, again, they proceed to engage the attorney … he or she asked for a warrant, they hung up on them," she continued. "If you believe in constitutional rights, you understand that they're targeting this person. And everyone knows he has been very vocal against the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and they're targeting him and refusing him constitutional rights. Who's next?"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., released a statement supporting Khalil.

"Mahmoud Khalil is a legal permanent resident whose wife, an American citizen, is eight months pregnant," Jefferies said. "To the extent his actions were inconsistent with Columbia University policy and created an unacceptable hostile academic environment for Jewish students and others, there is a serious university disciplinary process that can handle the matter."

Jefferies went on to say that "DHS must produce facts and evidence of criminal activity." He said the actions of the Trump administration are "wildly inconsistent with the United States Constitution."

In an X post on Monday, New York State Attorney General Letitia James expressed concern.

"I am extremely concerned about the arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil, an advocate and legal permanent resident of Palestinian descent," James' post reads. "My office is monitoring the situation, and we are in contact with his attorney."

James' comments came hours before hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in New York to express support for Khalil. Pictures show demonstrators waving Palestinian flags, carrying signs and wearing keffiyehs.

President Donald Trump said Khalil's apprehension was "the first arrest of many to come" in a recent social media post.

"We know there are more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity, and the Trump Administration will not tolerate it," Trump said in a Truth Social post.

"Many are not students, they are paid agitators," he added. "We will find, apprehend, and deport these terrorist sympathizers from our country — never to return again."
A palpable point. Mr. Khalil, for instance, has not been a student since he received his degree in December. nSo who, pray tell is paying him, and what have they been paying him for while he continued organizing Columbia and Barnard students to protest, riot, and assault and batter Jewish students on and off campus — almost all of which are unlawful actions not included under Freedom of Speech.

Former Philippine President Duterte arrested on an ICC warrant over drug killings
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Manila’s international airport Tuesday on order of the International Criminal Court in connection with a case of crime against humanity filed against him, the Philippine government said.

Duterte was arrested after arriving from Hong Kong and police took him into custody on orders of the ICC, which has been investigating the mass killings that happened under the former president’s deadly crackdown against illegal drugs, President Ferdinand Marcos’ office said in a statement.

"Upon his arrival, the prosecutor general served the ICC notification for an arrest warrant to the former president for the crime of crime against humanity," the government said. "He’s now in the custody of authorities."

The surprise arrest sparked a commotion at the airport, where lawyers and aides of Duterte loudly protested that they, along with a doctor and lawyers, were prevented from coming close to him after he was taken into police custody. "This is a violation of his constitutional right," Sen. Bong Go, a close Duterte ally. told reporters.

Duterte’s arrest and downfall stunned and drove families of the victims of his bloody crackdowns against illegal drugs to tears.

"Now we feel that justice is rolling. We hope that top police officials and the hundreds of police officers who were involved in the illegal killings should also be placed in custody and punished," delos Santos said.

Three of the police officers who killed his nephew, Kian delos Santos, were convicted in 2018 for the high-profile murder, which prompted to Duterte at the time to temporarily suspend his brutal anti-drugs crackdown.

The conviction was one of at least three, so far, against law enforcers involved in the anti-drugs campaign, reflecting the concerns of families of victims of suspected extrajudicial killings that they would not get justice in the Philippines, hence, their decision to seek the help of the ICC.

It was not immediately clear where Duterte was taken by the police. The government said the 79-year-old former leader was in good health.

The ICC began investigating drug killings under Duterte from Nov. 1, 2011, when he was still mayor of the southern city of Davao, to March 16, 2019, as possible crimes against humanity. Duterte withdrew the Philippines in 2019 from the Rome Statute in a move human rights activists say was aimed at escaping accountability.

The Duterte administration moved to suspend the global court’s investigation in late 2021 by arguing that Philippine authorities were already looking into the same allegations, arguing the ICC — a court of last resort — didn’t have jurisdiction.

Appeals judges at the ICC ruled in 2023 the investigation could resume and rejected the Duterte administration’s objections. Based in The Hague, the Netherlands, the ICC can step in when countries are unwilling or unable to prosecute suspects in the most heinous international crimes, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who succeeded Duterte in 2022 and became entangled in a bitter political dispute with the former president, has decided not to rejoin the global court. But the Marcos administration has said it would cooperate if the ICC asks international police to take Duterte into custody through a so-called Red Notice, a request for law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and temporarily arrest a crime suspect.

Israeli authorities have blamed the Iran-backed Iraqi terror group Kataeb Hezbollah, though no group has grabbed credit for her disappearance.

IDF launches probe into at least 6 cases of troops using Palestinians as human shields in Gaza – report
[IsraelTimes] The IDF Military Police has launched investigations into at least six cases where troops operating in the Gaza Strip used Palestinians as human shields, Haaretz reports.

There have been several reports amid the war of soldiers sending detained Palestinians to search buildings and tunnels before troops did, endangering their lives.

The IDF confirms the Haaretz report, saying: “The IDF acts in accordance with international law and military values. The IDF’s instructions clearly prohibit the use of human shields or forcing people to participate in military missions. The protocols and guidelines on the subject were routinely clarified for soldiers on the ground during the war. Claims of conduct that do not meet the guidelines and protocols are examined.”

The military says that “in several cases, investigations by the Military Police Investigatory Unit were opened after suspicion arose of [troops] using Palestinians for military missions during the fighting. Investigations in these cases are ongoing, and naturally, they cannot be elaborated upon.”

IDF chief cancels decades-old practice of military holiday ‘shutdowns’
[IsraelTimes] IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has canceled a decades-old practice where large portions of the military take time off at the same time, usually during the Jewish holidays.

The practice is known in the IDF as shutdown or hadmama in Hebrew. Entire bases or units would all go on breaks during the Jewish holidays and during the end of the summer, leaving skeleton crews to continue operations. Some non-essential units would close altogether during these breaks, which usually lasted several days.

The IDF was in such a shutdown period ahead of the October 7, 2023, onslaught, with many senior officers at home or on vacation, and only half the number of usual troops on the Gaza border.

Since the start of the war, there have been no such unit-wide vacations.
Deadly important lesson learned.
Zamir, during a conference with senior officers today, just days after entering the role, says that “there will be no more shutdowns in the IDF,” adding that there will still be usual furlough and vacation time, but not simultaneous by entire units.

Also during the conference, Zamir tells the officers that “2025 will be a year of war,” and that returning the hostages is one of the most important goals of the ongoing war.

After the IDF’s investigations into the October 7 onslaught and what led to it, Zamir says the IDF will establish a mechanism to also investigate the war itself and its numerous battles.

He also says that the IDF will allocate NIS 600 million to assist the families of fallen soldiers, career soldiers, and reservists.

Al-Sharaa said he does not want to allow a split between Russia and Syria

[Regnum] Syria is interested in maintaining deep strategic relations with Russia, so the new authorities of the republic are trying to prevent a split between the countries, said Syrian President for the transitional period Ahmed al-Sharaa on March 10.

"We don't want a split between Syria and Russia. We don't want the Russian presence in Syria to be a danger or a threat to any country in the world, but we want to maintain this deep strategic relationship," he told Reuters in an interview.

According to the interim president, ties between Moscow and Damascus were so close that after the overthrow of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, the country's new authorities decided to "leave room for meetings and dialogue," avoiding confrontation with the Russian side.

As reported by Regnum News Agency, on December 8, 2024, Assad resigned and left the country after the successful offensive of armed opposition groups on Damascus. He received political asylum in Russia.

On March 6, clashes broke out in Latakia between Assad supporters and forces of the new government of the country. Clashes also began in the province of Tartus. The authorities of the republic sent troops to these regions. According to the Kurdish television channel Rudaw on March 8, at least 532 civilians were killed in armed clashes in Syria.

Later, on March 9, fighting broke out in the port city of Baniyas in Tartus province. According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, Assad supporters attacked a gas power plant in an attempt to destroy the city's energy infrastructure, and government forces are trying to retake the facility.

The press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov stated that the issue of violence against peaceful Syrian citizens requires urgent consideration. He noted that many countries of the world and international organizations, including the UN, are concerned about the worsening situation in Syria.
