[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] An Oregon high school math teacher has been arrested on several child sex crime charges involving multiple alleged victims. Wymon Wayne Smith, 66, of McMinnville, was taken into custody on Thursday after the sheriff's office said they identified a second victim. The teacher, who was placed on administrative leave from Banks High School last month, was first arrested on January 14 on suspicion of having had "sexual contact with a student," the Oregonian reported.
Smith faces a series of charges by the Washington County District Attorney's Office, including four counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor, two counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor, first-degree sodomy, and two counts of luring a minor, court records show.
Authorities launched an investigation on January 7 after a minor female student alleged Smith had groped her and discussed "sexual conduct" the day prior, according to an indictment. He was immediately placed on administrative leave and the school notified the sheriff's office.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that they "learned Smith had sexually inappropriate conversations with multiple students and had sexual contact with at least one student on school property." Smith was arrested on January 14 and booked into the county jail on $25,000 bail. Records show he bailed out on January 28.

Shortly after his arrest, the Sheriff's Office said they believed there could be additional victims. A second female victim came forward to authorities and alleged that Smith sexually abused her while she was a student under the age of 18 between 2009 and 2010. Smith was arrested again on February 6 and booked into jail.
There have been 20 reports filed since Smith's first arrest, resulting in new charges, the Sheriff's Office said.
Brian Sica, the superintendent of Banks High School, said in a statement: "We share in the deep concern that this causes within our community."
The Oregonian reported that Smith began teaching in the Banks School District in 2004, working as the athletic director. The Sheriff's Office said that Smith worked as a teacher in Astoria in the early 2000s and in Nevada in the early 1990s.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said anyone who may be a victim or has further information is encouraged to contact the office at 503-846-2500.

'We're a community at heart, and a proud historical African American community,' Lincoln Heights Village Council member Daronce Daniels told Local 12 News.
'So things of that nature don't stand here, you know, that's a symbol of hate,' Daniels added. 'We're a community of pride and love.'
Traffic cameras captured the men, each dressed in black clothing and red face masks, as they hung white supremacy messages off of the overpass.
It’s time to go back to requiring protesters to show their uncovered faces. People ae more willing to be vile when they can hide their identity.
Among swastika symbols, the banners also displayed Anti-Defamation League symbols - often used by white supremacist groups and the Nazi party.

Jamaal Howard, a Lincoln Heights resident, told Local 12 News that he couldn't believe what he was seeing while on the way home from school.
'I'm like, wow, are we still doing that in 2025?,' Howard told the outlet.
'We just have to have some meetings about it because I'm fearing for my life, like I walk outside all the time, and now I have to be in fear just in case anything could happen.'
The Evendale Police Department responded to the 'unannounced protest' shortly after 2pm where they said they were working on 'keeping the peace.' Traffic cameras showed dozens of patrol cars blocking off traffic on the overpass.
I thought protests needed permits from city hall — which in this case would be in Lincoln Heights. Has that changed, too?
The sickening display led to a counter-protest from residents who said that hate has absolutely no place in their communities.
'You will not win,' Julian Cook, a pastor in Lincoln Heights, told WCPO News. 'You will not win. You may try, but we have a history of being able to push past these things, as difficult as they may be. You will not win.'
Shortly before 3pm, residents began to retaliate. Nearly 100 people yelled at the neo-Nazi group to leave, quickly leading to a confrontation.
One of the people who confronted the protestors, 16-year-old Ethan Eley, told The Enquirer that he pulled off the highway after reading a sign that read along the lines of, 'Save the white man's America.'
Ugh. As if skin colour were the issue. America is about the content of one’s character.
Eley said police were trying to keep the two groups separated while dozens of people continued to confront the neo-Nazis.
One officer, who was armed with an AR-15 style rifle, pushed back residents who had come to the scene in opposition, according to Eley.
More than 20 residents ended up breaking through the police barricades and rushed towards the men, who began packing their items into a U-Haul parked nearby.
During the rush, someone ended up snatching one of the flags, WCPO reported.
'The Nazis began to back off,' Eley told The Enquirer. 'They quickly jumped in the back of the U-Haul truck and took off.'
'There was just a general sense of unity for pushing people like that out of their community,' he added.
One women counter-protesting the group pulled out lighter fluid and set the flag ablaze, as others joined in - stepping and spitting on the burning flag.
Residents also slashed the tires of a Jeep which they believed belonged to one of the men in the group.
Once the U-Haul pulled off, residents began forming a prayer circle where they joined hands and stayed together well after the hate group dispersed.
Evendale Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department responded to the demonstration, which they said was 'short lived' and the protestors left on their own accord.
The department added that 'the protest, while very offensive, was not unlawful.'
Lincoln Heights Council Member Daniels said that this protest will be at the very top of his mind during the next meeting. He also wants to talk to both the sheriff's office and the police department about why they didn't break up the protest sooner.
'I'm more proud than our residents for showing up and saying that, "Hey, we're not going to allow anybody to come in and bully us in any type of way, especially in this moment,''' he told Local 12.
A group that refers to themselves as 'The Hate Club' - the same group behind the November neo-Nazi march in Columbus - has taken credit for Friday's protest.
November's shocking display, which was done in broad daylight, also enraged Americans as the suspects were heard airing chants disparaging people of color and those who are Jewish on circulated video footage.
There have been no arrests made in either protests, though multiple residents believe that there should have been.
'They just let these people drive off and disrespect us and our heritage,' resident Kachara Talbert told NBC News.
'And y'all going to let these terrorists and racists come over here and do that?'
The Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism is now tracking down the group that is known for its black and red face masks, according to Local 12.
Several people publicly responded to the twisted demonstration, including Mayor Aftab Pureval who released a statement to X on Friday afternoon.
'Messages of hate like this have no place in our region. It was shocking and disgusting to see swastikas displayed in Evendale today,' he said. 'This is not what we stand for, and it will never be what we stand for.'
The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati also released a statement explaining how it was 'deeply disturbed' by the entire demonstration.
'We will not be intimidated. Our response to hate is to reaffirm our commitment to strengthening community bonds, advancing education, and advocating for a society free of antisemitism and all forms of hate and bigotry,' the group said.
'We urge all citizens of Cincinnati to stand with us in rejecting hate and building a community where all people can live without fear or intimidation.'
The Cincinnati NAACP, a leading civil rights organization, addressed the protest while suggesting that the demonstrators may have been from out of town.
'Recently, in the area, there was a group of individuals waving a symbolism of hate,' the organization said.
'We are aware of the presence and based on the location they chose to display their message of hate; we question their residency in the city of Cincinnati.'
Lincoln Heights also made a statement the following day, which said: 'Racism is ugly, and it was on display yesterday,' The Enquirer reported.
'This kind of activity has no place in Lincoln Heights or anywhere else. We are proud of the restraint our community showed in response to this demonstration,' the statement added.
The response added that the incident is still under investigation.
The Cincinnati NAACP said that the country's current administration, may have, in part, motivated the neo-Nazi group to take to the overpass on Friday afternoon, The Enquirer reported.

'It is well known that people receive messages and actions in different manners,' they said. 'The current executive orders and actions have angered many and emboldened others.'

[BBC] Some of the biggest tech companies in the world served ads on a website featuring images of child abuse, helping to fund its operations. It shines a light into the dark corners of digital advertising.
Sometimes you come across an image online that's so horrifying you can't unsee it. For Krzysztof Franaszek, it happened at work.
Franaszek runs the advertising research firm Adalytics based in the US. Recently, he was studying where ads for the US Department of Homeland Security end up online, and the project took him to an image-sharing website called ImgBB. There, Franaszek uncovered something sickening: sexually explicit images of a very young child, with adverts for Fortune 500 companies running alongside them.
He immediately reported the content to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and child safety organisations. The Canadian Centre for Child Protection – one of those Franaszek alerted – says it found at least 35 images flagged by Adalytics on the site that meet its classification of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The Centre says it notified ImgBB, and the images were taken down. An FBI spokesperson says the bureau reviews all allegations of criminal conduct but does not comment on tips from the public. The DHS did not respond to questions.
The more Franaszek dug, the clearer the problem became – and his findings raise questions about how the adverts you see online may also be inadvertently pumping large sums of money into undesirable, and at times illegal, corners of the internet.
According to a new report from Adalytics, advertising systems run by companies including Google, Amazon and Microsoft have inadvertently funnelled money to the owners of a website hosting illegal images of child sex abuse. In addition to CSAM, Adalytics documented ads for more than 70 large organisations and Fortune 500 companies running alongside hardcore adult pornography, including MasterCard, Nestlé, Starbucks, Unilever and even the US Government. "Many advertisers whose ads appeared on this website probably had no idea that they were funding this kind of content," Franaszek says.
On 7 February 2025, US Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal sent letters to Amazon, Google and other ad tech companies mentioned in the report, demanding answers about whether this problem represents a widespread issue across the internet. "The dissemination of [child sexual abuse material] is a heinous crime that inflicts irreparable harm on its victims," the letter to Google reads. "Where digital advertiser networks like Google place advertisements on websites that are known to host such activity, they have, in effect, created a funding stream that perpetuates criminal operations and irreparable harm to our children."
While a few images of child abuse on a single website have alarmed many both inside and outside the industry, they also provide a glimpse of some of the wider problems afflicting the inscrutable world of digital advertising. Most people who use the internet will be familiar with the clamour of digital ads fighting for their attention. They are the product of a system so vast and complex that even the companies who run it don't always know where their money is going. For years, critics have warned that the tech industry will unwittingly line the pockets of bad actors across the web without serious regulatory oversight. Lawmakers are still catching up.
Meanwhile, it is relatively easy for anyone to set up a website that can make money from ad networks. "It doesn't cost much to operate a website that serves a few million images per month," Franaszek says.
Google, Amazon and Microsoft insist they are committed to fighting online child sexual exploitation and abuse. All three companies say they have now banned ImgBB and its subsidiary site IBB from their advertising systems.
"We have zero tolerance when it comes to content promoting child sexual abuse and exploitation and both of the accounts in question are terminated," a Google spokesperson told the BBC. "Our teams are constantly monitoring Google’s publisher network for this type of content and we refer information to the appropriate authorities."
'WE HAVE NO IDEA WHERE OUR ADS ARE GOING'
Ads are the fuel that powers the internet. The best estimates say spending on digital advertising reached an all-time high of $694b (£559b) in 2024. The marketing industry brings in untold sums for its clients, and the majority of ads are served on legal, appropriate sites. Sometimes, advertisers have a direct relationship with the platforms that run their adverts and commercials. But most of the time, the process is far more complex.
Almost every time you see an ad online, it's the result of a chain of dozens of platforms and services – some competing, others working together – in an automated process that plays out in fractions of a second. Advertisers usually don't pick the websites that show their ads. Instead, advertisers pay an "ad network" whose business is to find the most suitable audience on the most suitable site.
Amazon, Google and Microsoft all run ad networks of their own, but Google's are the largest by far. It's so dominant, in fact, that the company is currently fighting allegations of operating an illegal monopoly. Google disputes this and argues it faces steep competition in the digital advertising business.
These ad networks have untold millions of websites in their inventories. When a network serves an ad, the website gets paid. But anyone can plug their website into the ad networks and start making money. That means it's up to Google and other tech companies to do their due diligence to ensure they don't run ads on websites that fund criminal enterprises or damage brands' reputations.
But research by Adalytics and others suggests Google and the ad tech industry have sent advertising money from clients including US senators and multinational corporations to a long list of questionable websites, in ad campaigns that add up to tens of billions of dollars, and perhaps even more. The list includes websites featuring foreign propaganda, calls for racial violence, extremist political content and pornography, as well as sites based in countries facing US trade sanctions such as Iran, Syria and Russia.
According to Arielle Garcia, chief operating officer at the digital advertising watchdog group Check My Ads, incidents like this expose one of the key problems with digital advertising – that the systems running these adverts are so impenetrably complicated that it's difficult for anyone to figure out what's actually going on, especially from the outside.
"That isn't a mistake, it's intentionally opaque," she says. "The ad tech industry weaponises complexity." A growing chorus of advertisers complain that the big players in the ad tech business have been providing them with less and less information, Garcia says, and that lack of transparency makes it hard to detect waste and bad practices.
Google, Amazon and Microsoft are not the only companies that served ads on ImgBB. Adalytics found ad networks run by a list of other, smaller companies that ran ads on the site as well.
However, Google's dominance over the ad industry means it should share an outsized proportion of the blame, says Laura Edelson, a computer science professor who studies the digital economy at Northeastern University in the US.
"No one is more responsible for this than Google," she says. "Sure, this stuff might be hard to fix. That's why Google gets paid so much money. This is merely an engineering problem – the kind of problem they solve every day. Google should be held accountable. This is harming our society." ImgBB may also be an example of a much larger problem, Edelson says. "It is very unlikely that there's nothing else like this that's [able to] monetise in the same way."
Addressing these issues requires a layered approach that involves every stakeholder in the digital supply chain, Marcoux says. Ad networks who onboard websites should engage in much more robust review processes; advertisers should demand accountability to ensure their ads don't appear next to harmful or illegal content; and the payment processors who handle transactions and compensation along the ad tech chain should apply more rigorous conditions and Know Your Customer practices as well, Marcoux says.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, is drawing hundreds of millions of pilgrims and tourists to India. The 45-day festival, which began Jan. 13, is the largest gathering of humanity in the world. It is expected to draw approximately 420 million.
That is about 200 times the number of Muslim pilgrims who participated in the annual Hajj in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia, last year. It is so large it can be seen from outer space.
According to Hindu scriptures, gods and demons once churned the cosmic ocean in search of the nectar of immortality. During this struggle, drops of nectar fell at four sacred sites. The spiritual Hindu festival takes place once every 12 years at one of those four locations.
