Afghanistan
UN 'concerned' by Afghanistan morality law
[NEWAGEBD] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
authorities on Wednesday announced the codification of a law with 35 articles detailing wide-ranging behaviour and lifestyle restrictions based on their strict interpretation of Islamic law.

The law sets out graduated punishments for non-compliance — from verbal warnings to threats, fines and detentions of varying lengths — enforced by the morality police under the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.

'It is a distressing vision for Afghanistan's future, where moral inspectors have discretionary powers to threaten and detain anyone based on broad and sometimes vague lists of infractions,' said Roza Otunbayeva, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

'After decades of war and in the midst of a terrible humanitarian crisis, the Afghan people deserve much better than being threatened or enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
if they happen to be late for prayers, glance at a member of the opposite sex who is not a family member, or possess a photo of a loved one,' Otunbayeva said.

Many components of the law have already been informally in place since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, and it remained unclear if their formal codification would lead to stricter enforcement.

Women have borne the brunt of restrictions the UN has labelled 'gender apartheid', which have pushed them from public life, including barring them from secondary and higher education.

A doctor working in Kabul who did not want to give her name said she felt 'hopeless' hearing about the law.

'It would have been better if they had announced the opening of schools and universities instead of this law. That would have given us some hope.'
Yes, but they don’t want you to have hope. Hope is counterproductive to surrender.
Otunbayeva said the law 'extends the already intolerable restrictions on the rights of Afghan women and girls, with even the sound of a female voice outside the home apparently deemed a moral violation'.

The law says women must cover their faces and bodies if they leave the house, as well as ensure their voices are not heard.

The Japanese embassy in Kabul on Saturday posted on X expressing its 'deep concern about the continuing restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan as announced in the PVPV law'.

The UN also expressed concern over restrictions on religious and press freedoms in the law, which stipulates media must not publish 'content hostile to Sharia law and religion' or 'that shows living beings'.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
it said there were positive articles in the law, including those banning mistreatment of orphans and 'bacha bazi', or 'boy play', where older men force boys to dress up as women and sexually abuse them.

The Taliban authorities have consistently dismissed international criticism of their policies, saying all citizens' rights are guaranteed under sharia law.

Given the growing immigration from the Middle East and surrounding areas. We'll likely lose control and basic rights in 3 or 4 more US Metro's over the next 5 to 7 years due to growing Islamic/Muslim focused relocation.

Then clashes between them and those adopting a wide ranging Democrat lifestyle will get interesting quickly.

Al-Senoussi to Face Tripoli Court - LibyaReview
[LibyaReview] Former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi is set to appear before the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Appeals Court next Monday as legal proceedings against him continue. al-Senussi, a key figure in Muammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years, now among the dear departed, though not the dearest...>
's regime, has been imprisoned since the fall of the Qadaffy government in 2011.

His lawyer, Ahmed Nashad, confirmed the court date, responding to growing concerns about al-Senussi's health.

Nashad stated that while al-Senussi's condition is ''relatively stable,'' it remains fragile due to his advanced age and ongoing medical issues. He dismissed recent reports of a severe decline in al-Senussi's health as ''inaccurate,'' but acknowledged that his client's condition can deteriorate unpredictably.

Despite a previous court ruling that granted al-Senussi release on health grounds, he remains in jug, highlighting his status as one of Libya's most prominent detainees.

Abdullah al-Senussi, often dubbed the ''Black Box'' of the Qadaffy regime, was the chief of military intelligence and a close confidant of Qadaffy. He is implicated in numerous human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
abuses, including the notorious 1996 Abu Salim prison massacre, where over 1,200 prisoners were killed.

Captured in Mauritania in 2012 and later extradited to Libya, al-Senussi has been at the center of prolonged legal battles. In 2015, he was sentenced to death by a Libyan court, though the sentence has not been executed due to ongoing appeals and health concerns. His trial has attracted significant attention both in Libya and internationally, with human rights groups questioning the fairness of the legal process in a country still struggling with instability.

Al-Senussi is also wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity, with a warrant issued for his arrest in 2011. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
Libya has resisted extraditing him, insisting on prosecuting him within its own judicial system.

#2  The question that has not been addressed is what will be the response of the Sanussi brotherhood to a decision made in Tripoli, western Libya. The once powerful Sufi remnant that broke bread with Qadafi still exists in eastern Libya. Has it been totally quashed?

Germany's Scholz vows tougher asylum rules after suspected Islamist attack
[JPost] Horse, Barn
Lots of promises have been made about controlling immigration in recent years. Let’s see if this time he actually follows through.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz
…Social Democrat, Angela Merkel’s Number 2, then slid into her place when she retired. He was a Marxist in his youth, but charmingly claims to have outgrown it after making “almost all possible mistakes at some point"…
vowed to step up deportations and bring down irregular migration on Monday during a visit to the city of Solingen, where three people were killed in a mass stabbing over the weekend.

"This was terrorism, terrorism against us all," Scholz told reporters in the western city after laying a flower at the site of the attack in memory of the victims.

The attack, which investigators believe was carried out by a suspected Islamic State member from Syria, has fueled political tensions over asylum and deportation rules as well as violent crime ahead of three state elections next month.

Israeli withdrawal from Philadelphi Corridor may pave the way for hostage deal - Al-Ahkbar
[JPost] NO
Among what officials call "concessions," is included "Israel's gradual withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor during the first phase of the agreement."

Sunday's hostage deal negotiation talks focused on the "concessions on Israel's side which the mediators believe may lead Hamas to agree to a deal," according to a Monday report by the pro-Hezbollah Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, citing sources familiar with the subject.

Among what officials call "concessions" are "Israel's gradual [partial] withdrawal from the Philadelphi Corridor during the first phase of the agreement," alongside "a promise that no construction work will be carried out on the corridor or attempts to change the existing situation."
to allow Hamas to rearm
At the same time, a "land corridor" will allow the IDF troops to move and reach the area quickly.

Israel rejected the mediators' proposals to resolve the disputes. The Israeli delegation stated it did not have sufficient authority to accept or reject the proposals and that it needed to discuss them with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

ISRAELI DELEGATION TO MEET WITH NETANYAHU
Despite this, the round of talks is expected to continue on Monday with in-depth discussions with the Israeli delegation after it meets with Netanyahu and returns with final answers.

The current efforts of the mediators are focused on "a return to the previous agreement that Hamas agreed to, with minor changes, including a gradual and not complete withdrawal from the Strip, in exchange for clear Israeli flexibility regarding the return of the displaced to the north of Gaza."

The US has offered a revised proposal that will be discussed in detail at Monday's meetings.

Although "many of the details are pending Israel's final answer," Cairo still refers to the "optimism" promoted by Washington about reaching an agreement soon as "an attempt at internal political exploitation in the US in preparation for the presidential elections."

As for the Rafah crossing, the discussions on the issue reached the same conclusions as the previous ones, which link its reopening to "restoring Palestinian control over it."

Hamas says it rejects new Israeli conditions in Gaza ceasefire-hostage talks
[JPost] Hamas said on Sunday that it rejects new Israeli conditions put forward in Gaza ceasefire-hostage talks, casting further doubt on the chances of a breakthrough in the latest US-backed effort to end the 10-month-old war.

Months of on-off talks have failed to produce an agreement to end Israel's military campaign in Gaza or free the remaining hostages seized by Hamas in the terrorist group's Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered the war.

Key sticking points in ongoing talks mediated by the United States, Egypt and Qatar include an Israeli presence in the Philadelphi Corridor, a narrow 14.5 km-long (nine-mile) stretch of land along Gaza's southern border with Egypt.

Hamas said Israel has backtracked on a commitment to withdraw troops from the Corridor and put forward other new conditions, including the screening of displaced Palestinians as they return to the enclave's more heavily populated north when the ceasefire begins.

"We will not accept discussions about retractions from what we agreed to on July 2 or new conditions," Hamas official Osama Hamdan told the group's Al-Aqsa TV on Sunday.

AGREEMENT IN JULY
In July, Hamas accepted a US proposal to begin talks on releasing Israeli hostages, including soldiers and men, 16 days after the first phase of an agreement aimed at ending the Gaza war, a senior Hamas source has told Reuters.

Hamdan also said Hamas has handed mediators its response to the latest proposal, saying that US talk of an imminent deal is false.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
UN secretary general ''deeply concerned''
[GEOTV] United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "deeply concerned" by the escalation between Israel and Hezbollah and calls for both parties to immediately return to a cessation of hostilities, his spokesperson said on Sunday.

"These actions put both the Lebanese and Israeli populations at risk, as well as threatening regional security and stability," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
