[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A Texas judge whose son was senselessly murdered has called out local leaders who told her 'not to make a big deal' out of the slaying over fears it would impact tourism.
Lori Massey Brissette, a fourth Court of Appeals justice in San Antonio, posted a statement on social media blasting top brass in the Texas city which is fast becoming a byword for violent crime.
'My son was killed in March of 2023 across the street from the Alamo,' she wrote. 'I was actually told by one of our leaders not to ‘make a big deal’ out of it for fear it would impact tourism.'
Brissette's son Justin was attacked, robbed and left for dead outside of a bar near the Alamo in March of last year.
Her post excoriated local authorities for their lack of action to crack down on crime in the downtown area, after three tourists were killed in the space of three months.
She said: '3 tourists killed downtown in 3 months yet not one city or county official has done or said a thing. They are not just silent. They are absent.'
She continued: 'I was told it was a random act of violence. I was told that again when the 80-year-old grandmother was killed in May.
'I was told that even though I provided data showing 93 assault-in-progress calls from one block of downtown in the 12 months before my son was killed.
'Now in addition to a mental health worker and a 80 year old grandmother, we have lost a coach and a businessman.
'How many ‘random acts of violence’ have to occur before we admit we have a problem - before our city and county leaders ADMIT we have a problem and COMMIT to taking action?'
She urged her social media followers to share her post and to pose the question 'where are our leaders' when doing so.
In May, a woman was killed by a stray bullet. In June a woman in town for a conference was shot and killed while sitting at a bar and another attack outside a hotel left a man dead.
Heidi Silkworth, 80, was later identified by police as the woman killed by the stray bullet. Police said she had been caught in crossfire of a shooting.
Silkworth was from Euless, a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and had been in San Antonio for a graduation.
Also in May, repeat offender Bryan Davis was arrested by cops and indicted on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the death of Judge Brissette's son.
Police investigating Justin's death said he got into an argument with a group of men and two women.
At one point he was hit and knocked out, while he was unconscious the group are said to have stole his valuables and ran off.
He regained consciousness and he was taken to a friend's house where he again lost consciousness before he was rushed to hospital where he died.
Brissette told KSAT: 'It was hard because it felt like people were saying my son’s life was irrelevant.
'I’ve spent over a year and a half trying to get city and county officials to care about not only my son, but the larger problem.'
As she awaits justice for her son, she told the outlet she would continue to speak out as a way to remember him.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office released a statement.
'The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office typically saturates the riverwalk as we have in summers past with our "Hats on the Riverwalk," due to an increase in tourism the downtown area experiences during the summer months," they said.
'Since June 24th, Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputies have provided presence along the riverwalk as a visual deterrent for crime, but also in the event that an incident arose, Deputies can respond and assist as needed.'

As the Golden State continues to pursue its green agenda, the CEC expects some of California’s nine oil refineries to be shuttered due to falling demand, which would give the remaining refineries increased pricing power and raise the possibility of a surge in gas prices, the study concluded. To solve this problem, the commission proposed a variety of government interventions, including expanded regulation on private refineries, the establishment of state-owned refineries and an increase in imports. “The deployment of ZEVs [zero-emission vehicles] and a robust mass transit system are critical for achieving the state’s climate goals, reducing local air pollution, and eventually eliminating dependence on the volatile global petroleum markets. As demand for gasoline shrinks, refineries may close or convert to processing clean transportation fuels,” the report states. “This will lead to fewer gasoline refineries, with increased market concentration and associated market problems that often accompany it.”
To address the market concentration issue, the CEC proposed a variety of state interventions, including setting up state-owned refineries.
“The State of California would purchase and own refineries in the State to manage the supply and price of gasoline,” wrote the study’s authors, with the scope of the initiative ranging from “one refinery to all refineries in the state.”
However, the CEC appeared to question whether creating state-owned refineries to replace privately-owned refineries pushed out of business by government energy policy was counter-intuitive, asking, “as demand for fossil fuel declines, will the presence of State-owned refineries inhibit an orderly phase out of refinery capacity?”
The CEC also suggested increasing oil imports, saying, “as the transition unfolds, California may wish to consider developing a relationship with a supplier and refiner or marketer to bring CARBOB [California-specific gasoline] into California via regular ship loads so consumers are assured a reliable import supply.”
Finally, the California Energy Commission proposed new regulations, “requir[ing] refiners and terminals to maintain contingency reserves of gasoline fuel in refineries and terminals,” that they’d be required to release “during price shocks.”
California is set to ban the sale of purely gas-powered vehicles purely gas-powered passenger vehicles after 2035. However, “even under the most aggressive scenario transition to ZEVs [zero-emission vehicles], millions of petroleum fueled vehicles are anticipated to remain on California’s roads and highways beyond 2035,” the CEC study concluded. “These vehicles will need fuel to operate, and many of the vehicles may be owned by lower income individuals and families, making it even more compelling to identify ways to ensure an affordable, reliable, equitable, and safe supply.”

California is already a large net importer of gasoline having lost 10% of its refinery capacity since 2019 and about 30% since 1982.
It also is a major importer of electricity and water fwiw.

A congressional investigation recently uncovered overt political bias in the leadership of GARM, which is being used to control online speech and silence conservatives, the House Judiciary Committee said in a report released last month. GARM co-founder Rob Rakowitz, for example, once complained in an email about people “advocating for freedom of speech online,” and about “extreme global interpretation of the US Constitution.” Rakowitz has also criticized the U.S. Constitution for being written “by white men exclusively.”

In the piece, Shapiro identified himself as a volunteer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and argued that Paleostinians are too "battle-minded" to negotiate peace with Israel.
In response to the 1993 newspaper op-ed, Shapiro's spokesperson Manuel Bonder stated to the Times of Israel, "While he was in high school, Josh Shapiro was required to do a service project, which he and several classmates completed through a program that took them to a kibbutz in Israel where he worked on a farm and at a fishery."
"The program also included volunteering on service projects on an Israeli army base. At no time was he engaged in any military activities, he added.
The op-ed, titled "Peace Not Possible," included criticism of the Oslo Accords signed at the time. Shapiro wrote, "Despite my skepticism as a Jew and a past volunteer in the Israeli army, I strongly hope and pray that this ’peace plan’ will be successful." He also wrote that "Paleostinians will not coexist peacefully" with Israelis and that they "do not have the capabilities to establish their own homeland and make it successful even with the aid of Israel and the United States. They are too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own."
Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec said of the move from Shapiro, "I, for one, would never disparage someone’s military service. Josh Shapiro should be proud of volunteering in the IDF and wear his uniform with pride. The op-ed has resurfaced as Shapiro is assumed to be at the top of Harris’ shortlist of vice presidential candidates. Shapiro, the governor of the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, is seen as a valuable asset in Harris's efforts to win the state and other Rust Belt states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves... Shapiro, who is of Jewish descent, has not been as critical of Israel as the pro-Paleostinian base within the Democratic Party. This has led some Democratic pundits to suggest Shapiro may not be chosen because he is Jewish.

When asked directly about the op-ed at a presser on Friday, Shapiro dismissed it, saying, "I was 20."
