The 82 year old was also sentenced earlier this month to three years in prison in a separate case on charges of accepting external financing.
His lawyers said in a statement that was quoted in the press as "while he is fighting the 'empty stomach' battle, Ghannouchi calls on Tunisians to adhere to a democratic Tunisia that includes everyone on the basis of freedom ... and the independence of the judiciary".
At least six opposition leaders arrested in a 2023 crackdown began an open-ended hunger strike last week to protest at their imprisonment without trial and demand their immediate release from prison.

Ghannouchi has been directly involved in Islamist qua radical movements since the Nineteen Eighties. He worked with Hasan al-Turabi in the creation of an Arab conference of radicals first held in Khartoum in 1991. That he would finally spend jail time after all these years is ironic.
[AFRICANEWS] Guinea's ruling National Council of the Rally for Development (CRND) has dissolved the interim government in the west African nation.A decree was read on state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
on Monday by the presidency’s secretary-general, who was surrounded by other military officials and several armed and masked soldiers.
The decree provides that directors of cabinet, secretary generals and their deputies will be in charge until a new government is formed.
Amara Camara didn't not say when a new administration would be appointed.
Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, chief of staff of the armed forces, said in a communiqué dated Monday that members of the dissolved government had to return their vehicles and passports as soon as possible. Their bodyguards also had to end their service and the ministers’ bank accounts were frozen, he added.
The government was in office since July 2022.
The military junta is headed by general Mamadi Doumbouya took power by force in September 2021.
Under pressure, the then colonel agreed with ECOWAS to end a transition by late 2024.
[DM] Defence Secretary Grant Shapps is under pressure to explain a humiliating Trident nuclear missile test failure that saw the multi-million-pound weapons system go 'plop' in the ocean.
The Royal Navy has confirmed 'an anomaly' occurred during an exercise involving HMS Vanguard off the Florida coast last month - when the Defence Secretary was aboard the ballistic missile submarine. The US-made Trident 2 - with a dummy warhead - successfully 'left the submarine', but its first stage boosters did not ignite and the 58-ton missile sack next to the vessel, The Sun reported.
The incident marks the second failed launch in a row after a Trident missile launched from sister sub HMS Vengeance misfired during a test in 2016.
It is the latest embarrassment for the UK's Armed Forces, which have been plagued by equipment failures and manpower problems for years.
Earlier this month the Royal Navy flagship, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth pulled out of a Nato exercise due to a faulty propeller shaft. It followed similar problems with her sister ship HMS Prince of Wales two years ago, and previous engine problems which saw many of the Type 45 Daring Class destroyers stuck in harbour.
There are also ongoing concerns over manpower shortages affecting the Royal Navy and the British Army.
Shadow defence secretary John Healey said: 'Reports of a Trident test failure are concerning. The Defence Secretary will want to reassure Parliament that this test has no impact on the effectiveness of the UK’s deterrent operations.'
But Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, told MailOnline that while the test failure was 'bloody embarrassing' the problem that caused it would not affect a real launch.
'We don’t need to go overboard, the system still works perfectly. It is bloody embarrassing, let's face it,' he said.
'Every single bit on the submarine worked perfectly, thank goodness. We have just had a seven-year refit which was ridiculously long. That is good news because it shows that these old submarines, when refitted can still do the business.
'The problem has not affected the operation capability of Trident at all, it is related totally to the test firing.'
Officials said they could not say any more because the incident relates to national security. But they said there remained 'absolute confidence' in Britain's constant at-sea nuclear deterrent and that it continues to be 'secure and effective'.
HMS Vanguard carried out the doomsday drill off the coast of Florida on January 30.
First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Ben Key was also present at the time to mark what was the final exercise for Vanguard and its crew after undergoing a refit that took more than seven years, an MoD spokesman said.
The Trident missile was expected to travel some 3,500 miles before splashing harmlessly into the Atlantic between West Africa and Brazil. But instead it landed next to the submarine. The Sun reported that a dummy Trident 2 missile was propelled into the air by compressed gas in its launch tube, but that its so-called first stage boosters did not ignite. HMS Vanguard was under the surface and hovering at launch depth during the test, but was not hit as the 44ft missile plunged into the water.
BRITAIN'S MILITARY CRISIS
The trident test failure is the latest humiliation to hit the UK Armed Forces, with service chiefs and ministers facing major questions over Britain's ability to fight a major conflict.
AIRCRAFT CARRIERS
Earlier this month the Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth was pulled out of a Nato exercise due to a faulty propeller shaft. She was due to set sail from Portsmouth to help lead the western military alliance's biggest exercise since the Cold War. But the £3.5billion, 65,000-ton ship was pulled out at the 11th hour after rust was discovered on the affected part – leaving it at risk of it breaking down at sea. The Queen Elizabeth's sister carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, took its place. But it also faced similar problems, breaking down near the Isle of Wight after setting sail for America just 18 months ago – also due to a faulty propeller shaft. There was also an embarrassment in 2021 when an F35 jet fell off the end of QE during an aborted take-off.
DESTROYERS
In 2016 it was revealed Britain's cutting-edge £1billion air defence warships broke down in the Persian Gulf because they were not designed for the heat. The six 8,000-ton Daring Class Type 45 Destroyers were built with engines which kept cutting out in the middle of the warm sea, leaving servicemen stranded for hours in total darkness. They underwent expensive refits which solved the problem, but in the intervening period they spent a lot of time tied up in Portsmouth. Two of the cutting-edge warships, HMS Dauntless and HMS Defender, did not go to sea at all during 2017 – which was hailed by officials and ministers as 'the year of the Navy'.
SOLDIERS
Last month the outgoing head of the British Army said a ‘citizens army’ might be needed in future because of cuts to full-time strength.‘General Sir Patrick Sanders, the outgoing Chief of the General Staff, said even that would be 'not enough' as he pointed to allies in eastern and northern Europe 'laying the foundations for national mobilisation'. In a speech today, the general - who has been openly critical of staff shortages in the military - said boosting Army numbers in preparation for a potential conflict would need to be a 'whole-of-nation undertaking'. But Downing Street later hit back at the suggestion, insisting there were no plans for conscription.
SAILORS
Last month it was reported that a drastic shortage of sailors had forced the Royal Navy to decommission two of its warships early. Frigates HMS Westminster and HMS Argyll were allegedly retired so their crews could transfer to the service's new Type 26 ships. The news came as UK sailors were sent to the Red Sea to protect merchant vessels from Houthi rebels. The retirement of HMS Westminster would be controversial as it underwent expensive repairs in 2017 and only recently returned to service.
AJAX
A disastrous defence procurement programme has seen just 44 of an ordered 589 armoured fighting vehicles delivered to the MoD - a decade after bosses signed the £5.5bn contract. Over £4bn has so far been spent on the ill-fated Ajax project - 70 per cent of the contract cost - but just seven per cent of the vehicles have been accepted by the Army. The Mail has revealed a litany of errors with the 38-tonne machines, being built by defence contractor General Dynamics, with trials paused three years ago after troops suffered hearing loss due to excess noise and vibration. The machines also struggled to fire on the move and left troops feeling sick. Hundreds of personnel required medical assessment after taking part in trials of the vehicle, which was due to enter service in 2020.

...LITTLE KNOWN TRIVIA: The United States Navy maintains the Royal Navy's Trident missiles. Saves money dontcha know; and keeps those icky rockets out of the UK.
Now - there could be a few reasons why that first stage didn't ignite, and you betcha they're going to find them. This was embarrassing to both parties here, and it'll be resolved.

If it was the bird, we'd expect the US Navy, which fires far more of these as test items, would have seen a similar failure. 2 consecutive failed launches from Royal Navy boats - what's the common denominator?
It's worth noting, the first test failed because the missile went off course after successful launch. This time the missile was ejected but didn't fire.

MM,
Wasn't the -35's (AKA 'Fat Amy', AKA 'Battle Penguin', AKA 'Dave') fault - deck crew forgot to pull an inlet cover, and the aviator didn't catch it when he did his walkaround, and the launch crew didn't see it.
Put the spurs to it, ate the inlet cover, and that was all she wrote.

So, I guess they forgot arm the booster stage on the Trident? And they forgot that 304 stainless rusts and they intended to use 316 for the prop shafts but the intern goofed?

The First Sea Lord and the Defense Secretary were onboard for the test firing. In the relatively small spaces the Most Important figures in the Royal Navy Chain of Command were packed=in to enjoy the show. Imagine the pucker-factor and its echelons of flow downward to the folks who had to do some of the grunt work to make sure all the safety features associated with the launch were handled. I have no idea about how complex the sequencing is for such a complex system, but the ooops factor has to be a consideration.

Actually, its a learning moment for everyone. A lot of missiles aimed among all of us are not going to make launch, trajectory, or land on target. No one knows for sure how many. It's a test no one really wants attempted.

[KavkazUzel] The state prosecutor demanded that the Visaitovsky District Court of Grozny find Volgograd resident Nikita Zhuravel, who burned the Koran, guilty of violating the right to religion and hooliganism and sentence him to three years and six months in prison in a general regime colony.
As the "Caucasian Knot" reported, on February 15, human rights activists noted that the testimony of Nikita Zhuravel, accused of burning the Koran, must be questioned taking into account the conditions in which he is in Chechnya. Lawyers emphasized that Zhuravel’s confession in court could be calculated to gain the court’s leniency and indicate a plea bargain, but saying that he did not act alone could make the qualification more difficult.
The Visaitovsky District Court of Grozny continued to consider the case of Nikita Zhuravel. The prosecutor demanded that he be sentenced to three years and six months in prison, TASS reported today.
“I ask that Nikita Sergeevich Zhuravel be found guilty of committing crimes under Part 2 of Article 148 [“Violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion”], Part 2 of Article 213 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation [“Hooliganism”] and sentence him. Under Part 2 of Article 148 of the Criminal Code Code of the Russian Federation in the form of 300 hours of compulsory labor. Under Part 2 of Article 213 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation in the form of 3 years 5 months of imprisonment. Based on paragraph "d", Part 1, Article 71, Part 3, Article 69 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation by partial addition of punishments finally impose a sentence of 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment to be served in a general regime correctional colony,” Chechnya Segodnya news agency quoted state prosecutor Milana Baitaeva as saying.
Let us remind you that security forces detained Nikita Zhuravel in Volgograd on May 20, 2023. According to investigators, the detainee said that he recorded a video of the burning of the Koran at the direction of the Ukrainian special services and received 10 thousand rubles for it. He handed over the recording to an employee of the Ukrainian special services, for whom he also filmed military installations.

Yes, the story is about the innocence of the victims of a shooting in Chechnya
In 2016. Mills of Justice grinding slowly, indeed.
[KavkazUzel] Lawyer Andrei Sabinin, representing the interests of the relatives of eight residents of Dagestan killed in Chechnya in 2016, demanded in a cassation appeal that the verdict in the case of an attempt on the life of security forces be overturned and the case sent to the prosecutor or for a new trial. The Supreme Court of Russia considered that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence of the guilt of the victims and upheld the decision.
As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, on March 10, 2020, the Supreme Court of Chechnya found the murdered eight Dagestanis guilty of encroachment on the lives of law enforcement officers and illegal arms trafficking, but discontinued the criminal case in connection with their death. Lawyer Andrei Sabinin sent an appeal in this case to the Third Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction.
On January 10, 2023, the European Court of Human Rights awarded 27 relatives of those killed 609,000 euros in compensation. On July 5, 2023, it became known that the appeal court refused to reconsider the case for the relatives of the victims. The appeal court did not take into account the decision of the ECHR, which held the authorities responsible for the deaths of eight young Dagestanis in Chechnya, said the relatives of the victims and promised to appeal the verdict to a higher authority.
Residents of Dagestan Gashim Uzdanov, Pakhrudin Makhaev, Islam Magomedov and Shamil Dzhamalutdinov disappeared on September 28, 2016 on the road from Kaspiysk to Makhachkala. On October 4 of the same year, Gusein Guseinov (Gosen Gosenov), Klych Klychev, Shamil Dzhamalutdinov and Kamil Dzhamaludinov disappeared in Khasavyurt. The security forces claimed that these people were preparing a terrorist attack and were killed in a shootout.
According to security forces, the incident occurred on the night of October 9, 2016 in the Gudermes district of Chechnya, when police tried to stop two cars. Fire was opened from them. Eight suspected militants were killed and four policemen were wounded in the shootout, the Chechen Interior Ministry said. Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Chechnya were presented with state awards. Ramzan Kadyrov previously explained his proposal to reward the police by saying that “they, risking their lives, neutralized especially dangerous bandits.”
The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the verdict of the residents of Dagestan killed in 2016, the criminal case against whom was dropped, follows from the cassation ruling of the Supreme Court of Russia.
In his cassation appeal, lawyer Andrei Sabinin asked to return the case to the prosecutor or for a new trial, since “the involvement of the accused in the commission of the crime has not been proven by the case materials.” He, in particular, pointed out that at the place where the cars with the dead residents of Dagestan were found, 235 cartridges were found, some of them were fired from the machine guns of the victims and witnesses.
A total of 132 cartridges were fired from seven machine guns, the identity of which is unknown, but none of them were fired from the machine guns found in the burned cars. The lawyer in the cassation appeal suggested that the cars of the dead residents of Dagestan were fired at twice.
Seven damages were found on the armored car of the victims - employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the height of which (1440 and 1600 mm) excludes their formation as a result of shooting from the cars of the accused, and the nature of the damage on this car also contradicts the testimony of the victims and witnesses. The fact that an RGD-5 grenade exploded at the scene, as reported by the victims, has not been established. According to expert opinions, no damage or traces of exposure to explosives were found on the victims’ clothes,” the lawyer said.
The court noted that the lawyers' statements contradict the case materials and the experts' conclusions. “The expert explained the fact that no traces of a grenade explosion were found on the cars of the victims by the burnout of the cars, and traces of its impact on the victims’ clothes may not have been preserved due to numerous washes.
In addition, from the testimony of the victims it follows that they had a long time after after the events that took place, the uniform they were confiscated was not the one they were wearing at the scene of the incident,” says the ruling of the Supreme Court of Russia, which was published on its website.
The court explained the presence of cartridges that did not belong to the accused and the security forces as training shootings. “The presence at the scene of the incident of shell casings fired from weapons that did not belong to the witnesses and victims is explained by the fact that previously the site of the clash was used as a training ground for practical training in fire training,” the definition states.
The court upheld the verdict, but did not satisfy the lawyer’s cassation appeal, as follows from the text of the ruling, which was issued on February 13.
[GEO.TV] India is gearing up to launch its first domestically developed spy satellite via a SpaceX launch vehicle in April this year, Interesting Engineering reported.
The satellite, crafted by TATA Advanced Systems (TAS) Limited, the defence wing of the TATA Group, will bolster India's radar imaging satellite (RISAT) fleet, elevating the count from 12 to 16, according to the Economic Times.
With operations based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the TAS-built satellite will monitor infrastructure, acquire military targets, and enhance India's operational confidentiality.
Notably, it is anticipated to play a pivotal role in monitoring the "Line of Actual Control" along the Chinese border, boasting an impressive ground resolution of approximately 1.64 feet (0.5 meters).
The collaboration between TAS and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), allowing a private sector company to partake extensively in the satellite build program for the first time, signifies a groundbreaking move.
This partnership not only opens avenues for TAS to expand its satellite production for both domestic and global markets but also grants the company opportunities to delve into adjacent applications in space technology under ISRO's licence.
Despite possessing sub-meter resolution satellites, India had traditionally relied on foreign intelligence sources for data. The completion of the satellite's construction at the TASL plant in Bengaluru marks a significant milestone.
TASL, capable of producing 25 satellites annually, has inked agreements with the Karnataka government for further investments in the aerospace and defence sectors.
In parallel, a ground control centre is being established in Bengaluru, in collaboration with Satellogic, a Latin-American company, to guide and process imagery transmitted by the satellite. TASL's satellite imagery, reportedly, can be shared with friendly nations, fostering international collaboration.
This development signifies a notable stride for India in satellite technology, complemented by recent launches, including the meteorological satellite INSAT-3DS and the X-ray space observatory, Polarimeter Satellite (XpoSat).

[GEO.TV] After days-long debate and discussion, the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N) late Tuesday forged an agreement to form a coalition government in the Centre as no party secured a simple majority in the February 8 general election. The Pak establishment fixes a win. We saw that coming.
Following much uncertainty post-polls, top leaders from both major parties confirmed that they were once again joining forces to form the government "in the nation’s best interest". The nation's best interest involves dynastic politix, jailing your political enemies, and occasionally bumping them off.
"The Pakistain Peoples Party and the Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz now have complete numbers and we are in the position to form the next government," PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari told a presser in Islamabad alongside top leaders from both the parties late Tuesday.
No political party secured a simple majority in the February 8 elections, forcing parties to join hands in their bid to come into power, but the delay of an agreement had raised eyebrows.
After the Feb 8 polls, the PTI-backed independent candidates controlled the most National Assembly seats (92) followed by the PML-N (79) and the PPP (54).

(SIC) to ensure it gets the required numbers through reserved seats in the assemblies.
However, death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... the PPP chief told news hounds that the SIC did not have sufficient numbers to form the next government in the Centre.
Bilawal said Shehbaz Sharif would be the next prime minister and Zardari would be the joint candidate for both parties for the president’s slot.
He added that both parties would form the next government to pull the country out of the ongoing crises and expressed hope that they would be able to deliver.
To a question regarding PML-N leader Ishaq Dar’s nomination as Senate chairman, Bilawal replied that decisions were taken in the meetings, but would be announced separately by each party.
"If we look at the past, we have announced the coalition and made decisions with consensus very quickly compared to previous tenures," he continued.
PPP Co-chairman Zardari said that he wants to assure people that their struggle is for "you, Pakistain, and the coming generations".
"We have come to terms on the point that we have to ensure Pakistain’s success for the coming generations," he added.
