[SUDANTRIBUNE] A devastating artillery bombardment targeted eastern neighbourhoods in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, resulting in the loss of more than forty lives. The incident unfolded on August 22 when civilians sought sanctuary beneath a prominent bridge to evade the escalating crossfire between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sources shared with Sudan Tribune that a fatal shell was discharged from the eastern sector, controlled by the paramilitary forces, taking the lives of those seeking shelter. In contrast, the RSF held the army, which controls the city’s western area, accountable for what they termed a "massacre," asserting their shells were aimed at the eastern Nyala neighbourhoods.
On Tuesday, a statement from the RSF spokesperson alleged that the "Burhan coup militia and the krazed killer remnants of the former regime executed a brutal massacre of innocent civilians within Nyala, leading to the deaths of 42 individuals and inflicting injuries on numerous others".
Journalist al-Hadi Abdallah, from Nyala, conveyed to Sudan Tribune that many civilians had perished due to the fierce confrontations between the RSF and the army over the previous fortnight. He pointed out that a significant concentration of victims was situated in the Taiba neighbourhood under the control of the paramilitary forces, along with the eastern and northern zones of the city.
Abdallah disclosed that the Rapid Support Forces had commandeered civilian residences, compelling their occupants to flee. They had also seized governmental and private installations and launched an assault on the army command to assert dominance. This aggressive approach triggered the army’s defensive response, leading to an alarming toll of civilian casualties and extensive infrastructural damage.
An exodus of city inhabitants towards the Kalma, al-Salam, Darij, and Atash camps for the displaced was reported in the aftermath. At the same time, some sought refuge in the southern city of Belail or fled to North Darfur and East Darfur states.
The Sudanese army, however, remained silent regarding this catastrophic event.
Recent developments included a cessation of hostilities between the two factions two days prior, as no fresh festivities had been reported. Nonetheless, sources hinted at ongoing mobilization efforts by the Rapid Support Forces close to the command centre of the 16th Infantry Division of the army.

Interesting development in South Darfur: "On the other hand, the Sudanese army announces the assassination of Major General Yasser Fadlallah Al-Khidr, commander of the 16th Infantry Division, today Monday [21 August], in the city of Nyala in Darfur province."
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Noteworthy figures within the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) declared their formal split from the organization on Wednesday, designating former political official Suleiman Sandal as their new leader.
JEM leader Gibril Ibrahim relieved Sandal, the Secretary of Negotiations and Peace, Ahmed Tugud, Vice President Issa Adam Hasabo, and Secretary of Organization and Administration Mohammed Sharaf from their positions on August 14. The four were sacked after meeting with the RSF deputy commander, Abdel Rahim Daglo, in the Chadian capital last June without prior authorization.
The expelled leaders, with their supporters, convened in Addis Ababa, the Æthiopian capital, from August 28 to 30. After the meeting, they announced a course correction for the Movement and elected Sandal as its leader.
During the three-day meeting, attendees criticized the movement’s leader, Ibrahim, for allegedly monopolizing gains following the peace agreement. They also accused him of forsaking the principle of neutrality regarding the ongoing conflict and aligning too closely with the Sudanese army. Criticism was also directed at what they perceived as attempts by Ibrahim to impose his Islamic leanings on the organization.
In the conference’s closing session, Suleiman Sandal asserted that the JEM would extend an open hand to all political groups except the dissolved National Congress Party, which he held accountable for separating South Sudan and genocidal actions in Darfur.
Sandal reaffirmed their neutral stance concerning the war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), stating, "We will collaborate with all political forces and armed movements to halt the war and safeguard civilians."
He appealed to the leaders of the army and RSF to heed reason and end the hostilities. Additionally, he urged the Sudanese populace and civil groups to discontinue hate speech and racism and to champion social harmony.
Sandal disclosed that the extraordinary conference reviewed the Movement’s past decision to endorse the October 25, 2021 coup, acknowledging the mistake and its contribution to undermining the civil democratic government.
JEM, among the gangs signatory to the Juba Peace Agreement, played a role in orchestrating demonstrations that aimed to destabilize the transitional period, providing political cover for the October 25, 2021, coup against the civilian government led by Abdallah Hamdok.
Jibril Ibrahim, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, conveyed that an extensive consultative meeting of the movement’s leadership would take place in Port Sudan on August 31 and September 1.
[AFRICANEWS] Niger’s military junta that seized power last month on Thursday said it had revoked the French ambassador’s diplomatic immunity and instructed the police to expel him.
Sylvain Itte visa and that of his family have also been cancelled.
He had been told by the junta last Friday that he had 48 hours to leave the country in response to actions taken by the French government which it said were "contrary to the interests of Niger".
But the deadline passed on Monday without Paris recalling him.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that the ambassador would stay in Niger despite pressure from the military regime. And he reiterated Paris' support for ousted democratically-elected president Mohamed Bazoum.
The French government said it does not recognise the coup leaders as the country's legitimate rulers.
Since toppling the president, the junta has leveraged anti-French sentiment among the population to shore up its support.
