[ChicagoSunTimes] “At this time, there is no actionable intelligence,” according to the Chicago Police Department. “We continue to actively monitor the situation.”
Chicago police are urging Jewish and other religious communities to be extra vigilant this weekend when a neo-Nazi group has declared a “day of hate.”
“At this time, there is no actionable intelligence,” the Chicago Police Department said in a statement. “We continue to actively monitor the situation.”
Last month, a small antisemitic group based in eastern Iowa designated Feb. 25 as a “day of hate,” and other white supremacist and hate groups have since said they plan to participate, according to David Goldenberg, the Midwest regional director of the Anti-Defamation League.
“Our network of analysts at ADL’s Center on Extremism are carefully monitoring online platforms, chat rooms and a whole bunch of other things, and we’ll alert appropriate authorities if we see anything that we think needs to be elevated,” Goldenberg said.
The Chicago Police Department said in a statement that it is “in contact with members, leaders and organizations within the Jewish community and all faith-based communities in Chicago, and will continue working closely with them to strengthen communication and safety.”
Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th), whose ward covers a large portion of the city’s Jewish community on the North Side, said the police “will be paying special attention to all synagogues and Jewish institutions.”
“Families across our community should feel reassured that they are protected from those that wish us harm,” she said in a statement to the Sun-Times.
The online messages by hate groups prompted the police department’s 24th District Place of Worship Safety Advisory Team to issue a community alert this week.
“This anti-Semitic proposed event has instructed like-minded individuals to drop banners, place stickers and flyers, and vandalize by way of graffiti as forms of biased so-called activism,” the CPD alert said. “These organizers request that potential actions be recorded and/or photographed to submit online.”
Goldenberg said there has been an increase in the last few years in white supremacist and extremist networks popularizing “dedicated days of action.”
If it’s good enough for Antifa/BLM, it’s good enough for similar mixed groups of criminals and the mentally unstable.
He said it’s not uncommon for those groups to document and publicize actions taken on such days.
When extremist groups “collect this type of footage, they use it for recruitment purposes, they use it to create this sort of inflated sense of participation to suggest there’s a wider acceptance of antisemitism and white supremacy, when in reality, actual participation in these types of events is incredibly small,” Goldenberg said.
The national “day of hate” designation comes as antisemitic hate has risen to historic levels in Illinois and across the country.
Across Chicago, hate crimes reached an 11-year high last year, according to police data. In 2022, 38 of the 202 total reported hate crimes were against Jewish people, ranking antisemitic hate crimes second behind anti-Black hate crimes.
The ADL’s Midwest branch network works with 70 plus anti-hate organizations — not just Jewish organizations. Goldenberg said the organization encourages people to not interfere with or “get in the middle” of protests. The “best approach” is to “stay away” and notify law enforcement, he said, but when possible, the ADL supports the idea of countering misinformation with truth.
“It always holds true that when you encounter this type of hate — the antisemitism and extremism and vitriol — we always encourage people to speak out against it,” he said, “to respond to their misinformation and lies with facts, and to show strength when communities are attacked.”

[Free Beacon] Left-wing billionaires Laurene Powell Jobs and Marc Lasry funded Ozy Media, whose 'business strategy was based on outright deceit and fraud,' says Justice Dept.
The CEO of a media company backed by liberal billionaires including Laurene Powell Jobs was arrested Thursday for conspiring to commit securities and wire fraud after years of lying about viewership numbers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Ozy Media chief executive and former MSNBC host Carlos Watson was arrested after his cofounder Samir Rao pleaded guilty to pretending to be a YouTube executive during fundraising calls with investors and lying about finances and engagement.
The federal indictment said Watson "engaged in a scheme to defraud Ozy’s investors, potential investors, potential acquirers, lenders, and potential lenders."
"As alleged, Carlos Watson is a con man whose business strategy was based on outright deceit and fraud," said Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the eastern district of New York. "He ran Ozy as a criminal organization rather than as a reputable media company."
[BLAZE] A man put to death on Thursday used his last words to attack Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Donald Dillbeck, 59, brutally murdered Faye Vann more than three decades ago, committing the crime after he had escaped from a work-release job while he was already serving a life sentence for murdering Lee County Deputy Dwight Lynn Hall, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
"I know I hurt people when I was young. I really messed up," Dillbeck reportedly said. "But I know Ron DeSantis has done a lot worse. He's taken a lot from a lot of people. I speak for all men, women and children. He's put his foot on our necks. Ron DeSantis and other people like him can suck our d****."
DeSantis signed Dillbeck's death warrant last month.
[NYPOST] Florida police released dramatic bodycam footage showing the arrest of a teen suspected of fatally shooting three people Wednesday — including a local TV journalist and a defenseless 9-year-old girl.
"I can’t breathe!" Keith Moses, 19, repeatedly screams as Orange County Sheriff’s Office Deputies take him to the ground. "I can’t breathe!"
The footage shows police units confronting the accused triple-murderer on a residential street and yelling at him to get on the ground.
Moses refuses the commands and raises his arms to his sides before being tackled.
"Let me go!" he shouts as deputies slap on handcuffs. "Let me go! I can’t breathe!" "Help me, Atty Crump!"
As Moses continues wailing, deputies can be seen retrieving a gun from his pant leg.
"It’s still hot," one states after retrieving the weapon.
Moses, 19, was traveling in a car with his cousin and a 38-year-old acquaintance named Nathacha Augustin Wednesday morning in Orlando’s Pine Hills neighborhood when the killing spree began.
Cops said he fatally blasted Augustin inside the vehicle around 11 a.m. then fled the area.
Four hours later, Moses returned to the scene of Augustin’s murder and coldly shot Spectrum 13 journalists Dylan Lyons, 24, and Jesse Walden as they sat in an unmarked car while covering the initial crime, officials said.
Lyons, who was engaged to be married, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital while Walden, a photographer, survived the attack and continued to improve Thursday.
The homicidal rampage then continued, as Moses marched into another home on a nearby street and began firing at 9-year-old T’Yonna Major and her unidentified mother.
The child — described as a bubbly aspiring gymnast — died from her wounds at a local hospital, while her parent remains at death's door.
Her stunned father, Tokiyo Major, mourned his daughter in a heartbreaking GoFundMe post.
"She was a light to everyone that knew her," he wrote. "She was everything to us. She was a great student at the top of her 3rd grade class and reading at a 5th grade level."
Orange County Sheriff John Mina did not provide a motive for any of the shootings Thursday, and said Moses was not speaking.
Cops said he was initially taken to a hospital after his arrest because deputies thought he might be under the influence of drugs. But it turned out he was just feral, evil, and stupid
Once at the facility, Moses began brawling with hospital staffers before deputies had to subdue him once again.
He continued to attack officers after being transferred to a local station house, Mina said.
Moses refused to talk to deputies about the slayings and at one point pretended to fall asleep to avoid engagement, Mina said.
He is currently facing second-degree murder charges related to Augustin’s death, and a slew of additional charges are expected to follow.
Mina previously disclosed Moses’ long criminal history, which includes gun, battery, assault and grand theft charges.
State Attorney Monique Worrell appeared alongside the sheriff at a presser Thursday, and addressed critics who’ve questioned why Moses was on the street, given his prolific criminal past.
Worrell said he had only one arrest since becoming adult, a 2021 marijuana possession charge that was later dropped.

[FoxNews] A decorated U.S. Navy SEAL has died in Arizona after suffering a mishap during a free-fall parachute training exercise.
Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst was pronounced dead at a hospital in Phoenix Sunday afternoon following the incident at an airfield in Marana, the Naval Special Warfare Command said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ernst family," Rear Adm. Keith Davids, the leader of Naval Special Warfare Command, said. "Mike was an exceptional teammate. He was a dedicated NSW Sailor who applied his talents and skills towards some of our nation’s hardest challenges, while selflessly mentoring his teammates.
"Mike and his family will always be part of the NSW family, and he will never be forgotten," Davids added.
The cause of the incident was not immediately clear and remains under investigation.
[IsraelTimes] LGBTQ- and Black-owned businesses among those targeted in at least 14 acts of neo-Nazi ...adherents of a philosophy that was seen even at the time as pure evil, which makes them either consciously and purely evil, or attention-seeking ratbags. Pick one, or both.... vandalism in state
New Hampshire’s attorney general launched an investigation into an overnight wave of vandalism attacks in Portsmouth that included a red swastika and a cross painted on a synagogue.
The attack on Temple Israel was one of at least 14 acts of vandalism carried out before dawn on Tuesday against Jewish and minority-affiliated institutions, Seacoast Online, a local publication, reported.
"We take the safety and security of our community seriously and will continue to run our services and programs as planned, although with increased vigilance," Temple Israel’s rabbi, Kaya Stern-Kaufman, and president, Robert Zimman, said in an email to congregants. The synagogue, founded in 1910, bills itself as the first permanent Jewish house of worship in New Hampshire.
A security camera for a tattoo shop that displays expressions of solidarity with the LGBTQ community on its window caught a man in a red hoodie painting two red swastikas and an "X" through a sign declaring "You Are Loved." Black-owned business were among the others targeted.
An equal opportunity hater. How progressive.
The state’s attorney general, John Formella, said his office’s civil rights unit was investigating the attacks together with local, state and federal law enforcement.
"We will work to find and prosecute whoever is responsible, to the fullest extent of the law," Formella said in a statement, according to Seacoast Online. Police do not know if the perpetrator acted alone.
Last month, Formella charged two members of a local neo-Nazi group, NSC-131, for alleged infractions related to their hanging of a banner that declared "Keep New England White" over an overpass.
Nationalist Social Club-131 or NSC-131 is a neo-Nazi organization; the letters 131 stand for ACA or "Anti-Communist Action". It was founded in 2019 in eastern Massachusetts by Chris Hood, who had previously tried other neo-fascist groups such as Patriot Front, the Proud Boys, and the Base. The group first attracted the attention of anti-extremism researchers during the George Floyd protests in mid-2020, which NSC-131 members hoped to leverage to increase their recruiting. Along with the Patriot Front, NSC-131 is one of the most active white nationalist groups in New England as of 2022.
[Popular Mechanics] For more than two weeks, rumors swirled that there was a selfie, taken by a U-2 spy plane pilot, that included the now-infamous Chinese spy balloon in the background.
The secretive nature of the intelligence community suggested the photo, if it existed, might never see the light of day. Now, a photo has emerged that confirms it’s the real thing. The stunning image sheds light on how dedicated the U.S. government was to keeping tabs on the lighter-than-air intruder—and shooting it down when the time was right.

[NYPOST] Prince Harry ...That guy who married Meghan Markle. You know. The ones that didn't get invited to Michelle Obama's party?... and Princess Meghan Markle ...unlikable American former starlet married to the formerly likable Prince Harry. Chock full of lefty political opinions and not many brains, Markle's most important characteristic is that she is Black, even though she doesn't look it. Her mother, y'see, is half black and her father is white, which would make her a quarter Black. Once married, she was too classy for the Royals and she and Harry decamped to Beverly Hills, kind of like the Clampetts did, because she was so much classier than the Winsdors.... were ill prepared for just how low down the Hollywood "pecking order" they’d be, according to a former friend of the actress.
TV presenter Nick Ede, who says his friendship with the former "Suits" star started years before she had her sights set on the palace, claims that the pair didn’t realize they wouldn’t be known as "Hollywood royalty" when they moved across the pond to Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,.
"I think they came in and thought that the number one people on the block and they’re not really," Ede, who says he lost contact with Markle when she started dating the Duke of Sussex, told the Express.
"They’re kind of quite far down really in that pecking order. And I think that’s been an issue with them, in that sense of stepping down."
Ede, 49, claims the royals don’t carry the same prestige in Hollywood as other stars like the Kardashians, for example.
"I think the thing is that you forget that in Hollywood, royalty isn’t somebody with a title," he explained. "It’s J.Lo, it’s Sharon Stone, it’s Beyoncé, it’s the Kardashians. That’s their royalty."

Due to the roadway being unsafe for the motoring public, the north and southbound I-5 is closed. We are working with closely with Caltrans District 7 to reopen the Grapevine as quickly as possible as of about 2am PST on 24 Feb.
More snow is expected and elevation of pass is about 4000' so it may be a problem for much of today and tomorrow.

But I-5 is so critical to commerce and closes so infrequently that I went for that one.

In a series of media interviews, 30-year-old Atlanta-area resident, Emily Kohrs, who served as the forewoman of the special grand jury for eight months, was giddy with excitement over the 'not short' list of indictment recommendations that would be handed down, and that there would be no "plot twist" when the public finally gets to see their findings - particularly regarding "the big name that everyone keeps asking me about" (Trump), about which she said "I don’t think you will be shocked."

Being China is not so easy as it appeared, not so long ago, and is becoming even less so.
[Dawn] The main EU governing institutions on Thursday banned their staff from installing TikTok on devices used for work amid concerns over data protection, in a move that provoked an angry response from the company.
TikTok, whose parent company ByteDance is Chinese, has faced increasing Western scrutiny in recent months over fears about how much access Beijing has to user data.
The ban affects staff at the European Commission and European Council, which represents member states, but the European Parliament has not yet taken a similar decision.
The new rules mean staff cannot use the video-sharing app on work devices and personal devices, such as phones, that have official EU email and communication apps installed.
The Commission said its employees must remove the app as soon as possible and should do so by March 15.
EU spokeswoman Sonya Gospodinova said the corporate management board of the Commission, the EU’s executive arm, had made the decision for security reasons.
"The measure aims to protect the Commission against cybersecurity threats and actions which may be exploited for cyberattacks against the corporate environment of the commission," she said.
European Council front man Barend Leyts told AFP it "will be uninstalling the application on corporate devices and requesting staff to uninstall it from personal mobile devices that have access to corporate services".
A spokesperson for TikTok said "we believe this suspension is misguided and based on fundamental misconceptions".
’DISAPPOINTED’
EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton pointed to the cybersecurity risks he said had informed the Commission’s decision.
"As an institution, the European Commission has, from the beginning of the mandate, a very strong focus on cybersecurity, protecting our colleagues and, of course, everyone who is working here in the Commission," Breton told news hounds.
In November, TikTok admitted some staff in China can access the data of European users. The company however denies that the Chinese government has any control or access.
TikTok on Thursday stressed it protects the data of its 125 million monthly users in the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... and was taking steps to strengthen data security.
It later said it had requested a meeting with the Commission "to set the record straight".
"We’re continuing to enhance our approach to data security, including by establishing three data centres in Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... to store user data locally; further reducing employee access to data; and minimising data flows outside of Europe," the firm said.
The United States last year banned the app from federal government devices, and some US politicians are trying to prohibit TikTok from operating in the United States.
Last month, the Dutch government reportedly advised public officials to steer clear of the app over similar concerns.
The European Parliament on Thursday said it was "monitoring and assessing all possible data breaches related to the app" and would consider the Commission’s evaluation before making recommendations.
TOUGH LINE ON TECH
TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew was in Brussels last month for talks with EU officials during which they warned the Chinese-owned platform to ensure the safety of European users’ data.
The company has promised to further reduce employee access to data. TikTok also promised last year to hold US users’ data in the United States to allay Washington’s concerns.
The European Union has taken a tough line on technology companies, passing two major laws to make sure social media platforms adhere to the bloc’s rules on digital issues.
The Digital Services Act (DSA) forces social media platforms, online marketplaces and search engines to react more quickly to remove content deemed in breach of EU regulations.
The other, the Digital Markets Act (DMA), prohibits anti-competitive behaviour by the so-called "gatekeepers" of the internet.
[ABCAU] Queensland is launching a global recruitment drive for hundreds of police officers over the next five years, as the state's police minister acknowledges difficulties attracting new recruits.
Under an agreement struck between the state and federal governments, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has approval for 500 international recruits to join the service each year for five years.
The recruits will complete a fast-tracked training course of three to four months and then be stationed across Queensland.
The program will give recruits a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship.
Commissioner Katarina Carroll said those wanting to be recruited would be required to pass testing and vetting in Queensland.
"The new labour agreement goes beyond what has been offered by any other police organisation in Australia," she said.
"Allowing experienced officers from any country the chance to work for the Queensland Police Service and bring their own unique experiences, knowledge and skills to our organisation.
"We're looking for police across the world."
She said police from the UK, Canada and New Zealand would likely be the most compatible due to similar legislation.
Commissioner Carroll said there would be a social media campaign directing potential recruits to apply via the QPS website.

[Blaze] Students at a high school in Callisburg, Texas, were upset when they heard that an 80-year-old custodian was forced to come out of retirement in order to afford his rent, so they jumped into action.
The Callisburg High School janitor known as Mr. James to the students had his rent raised by $400 and he wasn't able to make ends meet without going back to work.
Three students decided to open a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Mr. James, and they set their goal for $10,000.
"Hey guys I’m having a fundraiser for our janitor who is struggling to pay his rent. He had to leave retirement to continue to pay his rent that was raised. Just a little will change his life!!" the description read.
After the campaign went viral on Instagram, the students raised more than $30,000 in just two days.
Only a week later, the campaign has raised more than $162,000 with more than 5.2k donations.

[FOX] About two million Cosori air fryers have been recalled after scores of reports claimed the product overheated and caught fire, according to federal safety regulators.
In a safety notice posted Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged consumers to "immediately" stop using the recalled Cosori air fryers. Atekcity Corporation, of Anaheim, Calif., is the importer.
The wire connection in the air fryers can "overheat, posing fire and burn hazards," according to the notice.
[CNBC] DETROIT — A defective battery that caused a Ford F-150 Lightning in the company’s possession to catch fire earlier this month isn’t the only problem the Detroit automaker has recently experienced with its new all-electric pickup truck.
On Jan. 27, a week before the fire, the company issued a "customer service action" for a small group of vehicles to have parts replaced to "prevent performance degradation" of the high-voltage battery. Ford Motor
said the problem only affected about 100 vehicles so far and is not believed to be connected to the Feb. 4 fire. Ford said it is monitoring the vehicles remotely and proactively contacting customers when the company spots the problem.
Despite the small number of vehicles impacted, it adds to a pattern of problems Ford and other automakers are having as they invest billions in rushing electric vehicles to market. Many of the industry’s issues have been minor. But when they involve the costly, and complex, batteries of the vehicles, financial problems and serious safety concerns — specifically fires — can arise.
For Ford, the F-150 Lightning problems are part of ongoing quality and operational issues, as outlined by CEO Jim Farley to investors days before the fire occurred in a Ford holding yard.
"We have deeply entrenched issues in our industrial system that have proven tough to root out," he said Feb. 2 during a fourth-quarter earnings call. "Candidly, the strength of our products and revenue has masked this dysfunctionality for a long time. It’s not an excuse, but it’s our reality. And we’re dealing with it urgently."
Ford, which executives have said was the most recalled automaker for the past two years, is not alone in having problems with its newest EV launches.

[UPI] Could a quick-dissolving pill placed in the rectum prove to be an effective and safe "on-demand" way to prevent HIV infection among sexually active men and women?
It might, new research indicates
The experimental form of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is designed to be placed directly into either the rectum or the vagina. In the new study, conducted among 21 men and women, it delivered high levels of protective antiretroviral drugs for up to three days following a single insertion in the rectum, with negligible side effects. Previous research has already tested inserting the pill into the vagina.
Still, the finding is preliminary. And importantly, investigators have not yet run tests to see if the delivery method actually prevents HIV infection in people. While research has focused on whether the pill effectively exposes a patient's rectal or vaginal area to the medication at hand, laboratory tests have also sought to simulate and assess HIV prevention effectiveness
The ultimate goal, say investigators, is to add yet another PrEP delivery method to the growing menu of oral and injectable options that at-risk men and women can use.
"This is the first insert [rectal pill] to be developed for HIV prevention," explained study author Dr. Sharon Riddler, associate chief of clinical research in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Medicine.
Composed of two antiretroviral drugs -- 20 milligrams (mg) of tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) and 16 mg of elvitegravir (EVG) -- the suppository is "meant to be used as needed prior to sexual activity, placed in the rectum or vagina, where it will dissolve," Riddler explained.
First approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration back in 2012, a daily oral dose of the antiviral drug cocktail known as PrEP is considered to be a nearly foolproof way to prevent HIV infection following sexual exposure.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when oral antiviral PrEP pills are taken as instructed, they lower the risk for HIV infection by roughly 99%.
And the CDC notes that the two pills on the market -- sold under the brand names of Truvada and Descovy -- are also at least 74% effective at preventing HIV infection among injection drug users.
Those at high risk for HIV can also choose to take PrEP off-label using on an "on demand" regimen, ingesting the pill just before and just after resuming sexual activity, rather than on daily basis. Though this intermittent method is not officially approved by the FDA, it is also believed to offer near complete protection against HIV infection.
In late 2021, yet another effective option became available, in the form of a once-every-two-months injection version of PrEP called Apretude.
In the latest study, work with the new insert involved 15 men and 6 women, all of whom were HIV-negative.
For the first round of testing, all were given the rectal pill to take in a clinical setting. Blood and rectal tissue samples were then obtained several times over the course of the three following days.
A second round of testing was then conducted within the following seven weeks, at which point all were given two of the rectal pills to use together. Samples were again collected in a similar fashion.
The result: After both the first and second round of testing, high levels of the antivirals were found in both rectal tissue and fluid.
Laboratory tests -- not yet replicated in people -- further indicated that both the one and two-dose regimen appeared to prevent HIV infection for up to three days, though the two-dose regimen was found to provide greater protection.
[Townhall] Train 32N was operating with a dynamic brake application as the train passed a wayside defect detector on the east side of Palestine, Ohio, at milepost (MP) 49.81. The wayside defect detector, or hot bearing detector (HBD), transmitted a critical audible alarm message instructing the crew to slow and stop the train to inspect a hot axle. The train engineer increased the dynamic brake application to further slow and stop the train. During this deceleration, an automatic emergency brake application initiated, and train 32N came to a stop. Looks like the bearig was already hot when it got to the detector and the crew responded appropriately.
Since the derailment, the NTSB said it has collected the "wheel bearing and affected wheelset" as well as the "vinyl chloride tank car top fittings, including the relief valves."
The ongoing NTSB probe will "focus on the wheelset and bearing; tank car design and derailment damage; a review of the accident response, including the venting and burning of the vinyl chloride; railcar design and maintenance procedures and practices; NS use of wayside defect detectors; and NS railcar inspection practices," according to the investigators. I expect the final report will be comprehensive.

Maybe accelerometers on each wheel assembly would work.

[YouTube] You have to turn on the captioning as it's in korean but this is a very interesting look at their practice grenades. They are almost completely biodegradable and yet a close enough copy to be good practice before the throwing of live grenades.
And unlike US grenade simulators, they aren't dangerous. You can let them go off in your hand and it won't hurt you.

What they said was 3 to 4 throws with these before going to live grenades has greatly reduced training accidents. So they still have to throw live grenades.

Rantburg was assembled from recycled algorithms in the United States of America. No
trees were destroyed in the production of this weblog. We did hurt some, though. Sorry.
