[ToloNews] A security source said that at least 30 cases of assassinations have been reported in the southern city of Kandahar in the past two months, adding that such incidents have increased recently.
Some Kandahar residents said that an increase in such incidents has made them concerned, despite that it's usually against babus government employees and security forces.
"Armed men are not leaving anyone, whether they are babus government employees or military men. They are even targeting lower ranking employees of the municipality," Kandahar resident Abdulbaqi said, "this must stop."
"The city of Kandahar is not safe. Except traffic police, others are not safe... Soldiers are killed, babus government employees are killed. The government should safeguard us," Kandahar resident Khair Mohammad said.
Other residents in Kandahar said such incidents will increase if perpetrators are not arrested.
"These cases happen in the city of Kandahar on an average of one per day. Some days it happens five to six times," Kandahar resident Bismillah Watandost said.
"No one is feeling safe here. There is a horror everywhere, even in downtown areas where we think it is safe," said Sirat Safi, a Kandahar resident.
The provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat admitted that crime and assassination cases have increased in the city but added that garrison forces will be deployed to ensure people’s safety.
"We will form garrison forces in the near future in order to prevent such incidents and provide for the people’s safety," the governor said.
[KhaamaPress] According to the reports, angry Talibs have killed four donkeys who were carrying food from the Taliban ...Arabic for students... area to the government-held territory in Ghor province of Afghanistan.
Abdul Hai Khatibi, a provincial spokesperson for Ghor has confirmed the incident has taken place in the Chaharsada district of Ghor on Monday.
According to another report, a woman coming from her parent’s home in Korgin to the Chaarsada district had her four donkeys loaded with rice, ghee and flour were stopped by the Talibs, the food was seized and the donkeys were rubbed out.
The Taliban have not commented yet on this.
No wonder. Donkeys don’t go to Paradise when martyred, whether deliberately or accidentally in the process of someone else’s jihad.
This comes as the US peace envoy and the Taliban leaders have been discussing a peace deal for the last 12 months as a result of which violence reduction and a ceasefire is expected.
The Taliban had earlier announced that their leaders have agreed to a 7-10 days brief ’ceasefire’ after they sign a deal with the United States.
The Afghanistan government is insisting on a complete ’ceasefire’ before they sign an agreement with the United States.

[IsraelTimes] Greece will send some of its Patriot defense missiles to Saudi Arabia under a program involving the US, Britain and France, the government spokesman says.
Athens will deploy the missiles at Saudi cost “to protect critical energy infrastructure,” government spokesman Stelios Petsas tells reporters.
“The deployment contributes to energy security, promotes our country as a factor of regional stability and strengthens our ties to Saudi Arabia,” Petsas says, adding that talks on the move began in October.
He does not give a date for the deployment.
The US, Britain and France are part of the same initiative and Italy is likely to join, the spokesman said.

I was kinda hoping for the Cheech & Chong pic...
The assailant in Monday evening’s attack, at a barracks in Dieuze in eastern France, wounded one officer in the hand. Police shot and wounded the knifeman, who is now in hospital.
Shortly before the attack, a call was placed to the police from someone saying he was in the armed forces and was preparing an attack in Dieuze in the name of the militant Islamic State (IS) group, French media cited local prosecutors as saying.
A 19-year old serviceman was named a suspect in the attack on a gendarmerie station in France, which took place after police received a threat of a massacre in the name of Islamic State.
The suspect was “a young soldier who was completing his two months of initial training and was on probation,” Defense Minister Florence Parly confirmed on Tuesday. She added that the man was not on duty during the attack.
The prosecutor in the northeastern city of Metz Christian Mercuri told reporters that the 19-year-old alleged culprit joined the army in early December.
Update from The Limited Times at 12:30 p.m. ET offers a name for the miscreant in a translation from a Le Parisien article:
In the aftermath of the stabbing attack carried out at the Dieuze (Moselle) gendarmerie barracks, Matthias R., the alleged perpetrator, has been heard since Tuesday morning by investigators from the Metz judicial police, co- seized with the gendarmes of the research section. Operated overnight after being injured in the abdomen, the 19-year-old soldier is out of danger.
Sources close to the investigation, the assailant was neither known to the intelligence services nor to the justice system. "There are no known elements of radicalization concerning him," explains one of these sources. Without prejudice, there could be a predominant suicidal dimension in his gesture. "
Monday, it is 2.39 pm when the operational center of the gendarmerie receives an alarming call via the 17. The interlocutor explains that he is on the point of committing mass killing in Dieuze and claims to be a terrorist organization Islamic State (EI). Thirty minutes later, Matthias R., dressed in civilian clothes, entered the local brigade with a knife. Then threatens to kill a policeman he meets before jumping on him. The latter, injured in the hand, retorts and shoots the attacker twice.

[Rudaw] Kurdish security forces announced on Monday the capture of a major Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) hard boy near Kifri in the Kurdistan Region’s Garmiyan area.
"Yesterday our Asayesh (security) forces near Nawjul managed to capture a major terrorist who is known as Abu Haris al-Diyala," Osman Abdulkarim, spokesperson of Garmiyan Asayesh told news hounds in a presser on Monday.
Nawjul sub-district is controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) but lies in Diyala province, disputed between Baghdad and Erbil.
"Abu Haris has taken part in many battles along ISIS ranks in Kirkuk including attacks against Peshmerga forces and Hashd al-Shaabi near North Oil Company," he said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.
"This terrorist has taken part in special training missions with ISIS to carry out acts of terror against coalition forces and Peshmerga in Kirkuk province," Abdulkarim added.
The runaway comes from a family with several links to the terrorist group, with two brothers killed as fighters and another ‐ said to be an ISIS emir- arrested in Qara Tapa several months ago.
Golly. At the rate they’re going, the entire family line will soon be wiped out.
Disputed areas of Diyala province as well as southernmost areas of Garmiyan region have often been the target of ISIS hard boys' hit-and-run activities.
The group's bandidosturbans have recently turned to kidnapping activities.
On Friday and Saturday nights ISIS suspects kidnapped nine civilians, including two Kurds and seven Arabs near Tuz Khurmatu and Qaratapa, both in Diyala province.
The ongoing dispute over territorial control and lack of communication between Kurdish and Iraqi security forces has led to a security vacuum in contested territories along the border of the Kurdistan Region.
James Jeffrey, the US special envoy to the anti-Islamic State (ISIS) coalition announced on January 30 that ISIS is making a comeback.
"We are seeing ISIS come back as an insurgency, as a terrorist operation, with some 14- to 18,000 forces of Evil between Syria and Iraq," Jeffery warned. "ISIS considers both countries ‐ as they have always done- as a single front."
Jeffery said that they were working with the Iraqi government and Syrian local authorities to "combat this scourge."
[IsraelTimes] Soldiers intercepted boat, arrested 2 on board who were moving arms to terror group’s naval operatives in Gazoo Strip some 3 months ago, military reports.
Israel some three months ago thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons from Sinai into the Gaza Strip via the sea, the military announced Tuesday.
The army said the navy, aided by the Shin Bet security agency, stopped weapons intended for Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", as they were being ferried in on a boat.
It did not provide a date for the operation or details on what weaponry was caught.
The military said navy soldiers intercepted the boat and arrested two operatives on board. During their questioning they said the weapons were intended for Hamas naval commandos.
Hamas naval commandos came to prominence during 2014’s war with the terror group, when members of the force swam ashore outside Kibbutz Zikim on Israel’s southern coast.
The frogmen brought with them automatic weapons, fragmentation grenades and explosives, the latter of which they used against an Israeli tank, unsuccessfully. IDF surveillance crews noticed their movements and some 40 minutes after they came in from the surf, the Hamas operatives were killed in a combined attack from the sea, ground and air.
Israel has since built a 200-meter-long sea barrier, alongside various technological means, to prevent future attacks.
Israel has stopped multiple attempts to smuggle military gear and weapons into the Strip, both through the sea and through shipments entering the Paleostinian territory.
Israel has maintained a naval blockade of the Hamas-ruled coastal strip since the terror group violently took over the territory from the Paleostinian Authority in 2007. Israel says the measure is necessary to prevent Hamas from acquiring weapons from overseas. Humanitarian aid is transferred to the Paleostinian enclaves through Israeli land crossings.
As part of the blockade, fishing boats and other seagoing vessels are limited to traveling close to the coast.
During Operation Protective Edge in 2014, five Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, frogmen (naval commandos) tried to infiltrate Kibbutz Zikim before they were engaged and killed by the IDF. Since the conflict, Hamas has significantly expanded its naval commando unit with a reported 1,500 frogmen.

Israel Defense Forces aircraft attacked several targets near Khan Younis in southern Gaza, according to Paleostinian media reports.
"A short time ago IDF warplanes attacked terror targets belonging to Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®, in the southern Gaza Strip. A site for manufacturing weapons for Hamas’s military wing was attacked. The attack was a blow to Hamas’s ability to further arm itself," the IDF said in a statement.
"The attack was carried out in response to high altitude fire and balloon explosives from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory today," the statement said.
At least three rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel shortly after midnight, setting off rocket sirens in southern Israeli communities.
"An alarm was activated in the city of Netivot and in the area around Gaza," the IDF said in a statement. "Following the alarm, three launches were identified from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory."
Two people were lightly injured while rushing for bomb shelters, Army Radio reported. There were no reports of the Iron Dome missile defense system being activated.
A total of 13 rockets have been fired into Israel in the past week, the IDF said.
The area has seen a marked increase in violence in recent days days, with near daily rocket fire and launches of suspected balloon borne bombs, drawing retaliatory airstrikes and punitive measures.

The payoff for Fred choosing the efficient route is that he has time to update Rantburg’s programming and fight off spammers and denial of service attacks. I remember spending an hour or two at a time frantically deleting spam posts in real time — I accept ignoring twitter signage in exchange.
And I am very grateful for those who sift through all that Twitter straw to find us the few needles.
