[IsraelTimes] Federal court gives US Attorney’s Office two weeks to respond to application for a competency evaluation for Grafton Thomas who maimed five people, one critically, in assault.
A psychiatrist has found Grafton Thomas
...psychotic, depressed, and off his meds, he researched and attacked with a machete a Hassidic rabbi celebrating Hannukkah with his family and friends at his home. Mr. Thomas’s family and their minister would have us believe he is a gentle and loving man when not a wannabe psychotic, Joo-hating mass-murderer. If only there were a place for such people...
incompetent to stand trial on federal hate crime charges stemming from a machete attack at a Hanukkah party that maimed five Hasidic Jews, Thomas’s attorney said Monday.
Defense attorney Michael Sussman said in a statement that he has asked a federal judge to hold a competency evaluation for Thomas, who was arrested hours after a stabbing attack on Dec. 28 in Monsey, an Orthodox Jewish community north of New York City.
The federal court has given the US Attorney’s Office two weeks to respond to the application for a competency evaluation, Sussman said. The US Attorney’s Office declined to comment to the media on Monday.
Thomas has pleaded not guilty "Wudn't me." to attempted murder and other charges in Rockland County. He pleaded not guilty to 10 hate-crime charges in federal court on Jan. 13. Thomas is being held without bail in federal custody.
Investigators found anti-Semitic writings in Thomas’s journals and articles on Jews and Nazis on his cell phone, according to a complaint filed by the US Attorney’s Office.
Sussman and Thomas’ mother have said Thomas suffers from mental illness and was not responsible for his actions. Sussman has said Thomas has no history of violent acts or anti-Semitism.
One of the victims, 72-year-old Josef Neumann, remains in a coma with a fractured skull and other injuries.
How fortunate that nobody really pays attention to Egypt except Israel and Libya.

Overall, it like all tech. It's coming and it ain't going away. Like nuclear weapons the best that can be hoped for is a very tight leash. On the one hand, it's creep as hell, especially if you are a squarejohn citizen minding your own business. On the other hand, if the cops are already actively looking for someone, there's a strong chance there's a good reason for that. Where the line is drawn is the rub.

It's just another data set for PII (Personally Identifuabke Information). Any PII data can be mishandled, leaked, abused. Nothing particularly weird or unique about facial data.
Frankly I'd rather have my facial data stored with law enforcement than entrust Google with all the data they typically collect. I have no idea why people trust the latter more than the former.

Used for ... what, exactly? The Stasi and Gestapo depended on typewriters and rooms full of file cards to support their villainy. It ain't the tool, it's the intent.

All this wonderful tech might make travel more interesting, at least for those without gov or corp entanglements. In one generation we'll have gone from "Wow, that looks like an expensive camera... and I can run pretty fast," to "Hey, amigo, how's my new phone sound? Listen, there's three gabachxs coming in on the 3:15 that need robbing," to "Si, Comandante, they go for a run every morning at 0500. You say he's retired and childless... has type Rare blood, very attractive kidneys, and $97,000 in the bank... and his wife looks like that? Who says Christmas comes but once a year?"
Luckily, there's no corruption in this country, especially not in the big anonymous cities or way out in the sticks.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Ottoman Turkish prosecutors are investigating dozens of people for "provocative" social media messages about the deadly earthquake in eastern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... , reports said Monday.
The corpse count from Friday’s quake in Elazig province reached 41 people as rescue teams pulled the body of the last missing person from under the rubble, the country’s disaster agency said.
The Ankara prosecutor’s office is investigating 50 individuals on suspicion of "spreading fear and panic" and "insulting the Ottoman Turkish people, the Ottoman Turkish republic and the state institutions," the Hurriyet daily reported Monday.
The suspects are accused of sharing fake images about the quake on social media.

Ottoman Turkish authorities were winding up their rescue efforts on Monday, with the government’s disaster agency AFAD saying a total 45 people had been pulled alive from the rubble.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told news hounds that 24,000 tents had been provided, 1,000 container shelters were being built, and funds had been released to repair damaged buildings.
Most of the victims died in Elazig and some in the neighboring province of Malatya. The quake was felt in other countries including Iraq and Syria.

It is a totally genius plan. Just don't forget to pass a law requiring criminals to obey the law. That seems to be the sticky point with gun control laws in our country.

"...peace plan for the Middle East" does seem to be an oxymoron so he has a point. Unless you feel like going "full-on Mongol" and exterminating all of the combatants.

"In an area 30-40 kilometers deep in Syria close to our border, we have planned to build, not a tent city, but homes, and the construction has begun," Erdogan said.
That would be in the cities and villages where they recently drove out the Kurds. How generous of them.
"We want our Idlib brothers and sisters to take shelter in winter here," he told news hounds during a presser in Istanbul.
Ottoman Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on January 15 mentioned talks with Russia about a proposed "safe zone" but there has been little detail offered by officials or media.
But Ottoman Turkish NGO the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH) said Thursday that work had started in a bid to build 10,000 homes for displaced residents in a village in the Idlib region five kilometers (three miles) from the Ottoman Turkish border.
IHH said 450,000 people had fled toward the border in the past five months.
Erdogan said he was frequently talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... about "ensuring the safety of civilians" in Idlib.

Russian air strikes in the region killed eight civilians Thursday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
This was despite a ceasefire sponsored by Damascus ally Russia and rebel supporter Turkey earlier this month intended to halt the violence.
