[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A private radio station in Afghanistan has shut down after numerous threats from a suspected Taliban ...Arabic for students... commander who objected to women working as presenters, officials at the radio station said on Monday.
The incident comes as the Taliban are discussing a peace deal with the United States that could see them re-joining mainstream society, and that has brought new scrutiny of their attitudes to issues like women’s rights and the media.
The private radio station, Samaa, has been broadcasting political, religious, social and entertainment programs in the central province of Ghazni since 2013.
Its 13 employees, including three women presenters, broadcast in Afghanistan’s two main languages - Dari and Pashto.
The radio station’s director, Ramez Azimi, said Taliban commanders in the area had sent written warnings and telephoned in, to tell the radio station to stop employing women.
"The Taliban also came to my house and issued a threat," Azimi said.
He said the threats had forced him to suspend broadcasts.
Taliban front man Zabihullah Mujahid denied that a Taliban commander had issued the threats.
"We are trying to find details," said Mujahid.
The Taliban say many people falsely identify themselves as Taliban, often in the course of private disputes.
Several districts of Ghazni are under Taliban control.

[AnNahar] A total of 282 people were arrested in La Belle France after unrest following the Algerian football team's qualification for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, the interior ministry said Monday.
Riotous celebrations erupted around the country after Algeria beat Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-final. The arrests were made nationwide on Sunday evening, the ministry said.
Some of the arrests were also linked to unrest surrounding events marking La Belle France's national day celebrations on Sunday.
Unruly scenes erupted in Gay Paree, Marseille and Lyon. Fifty people were arrested in the French capital and there were incidents between football fans and police on the Champs-Elysees avenue.
Dozens of cars were torched overnight in the eastern city of Lyon.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner on Monday congratulated police and firemen for their "speedy reaction and professionalism which contained the violence and to the perpetrators" being apprehended.
Of those arrested, 249 people were in jug.
Last Thursday, when Algeria defeated Ivory Coast to reach the semi-finals, fans went on the rampage in central Gay Paree, looting shops.
On the same day in the southern city of Montpellier, an Algerian football supporter celebrating his team's win lost control of his car at high speed and ran into a family, killing a woman and seriously injuring her baby.
Gay Paree and Marseille are home to large minority communities of Algerian origin. Football celebrations, with supporters brandishing large national flags, have on occasion been a source of tensions.

The European Investment Bank has been asked to revisit the conditions set out for providing financial support to Ankara, according to several European sources.
The EU is also expected to downgrade its dialogue with Turkey, without cutting it off completely.
And one senior European diplomat added: "It has not be ruled out that targeted sanctions be adopted at some time or other."
The EU last month warned Turkey it could face sanctions if it did not cease what the bloc called "illegal" drilling in Cyprus’s exclusive economic zone.

[Times of Israel] Tracking data shows an oil tanker based in the United Arab Emirates traveling through the Strait of Hormuz drifted off into Iranian waters and stopped transmitting its location over two days ago, raising concerns Tuesday about its status amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US.
It isn't clear what happened to the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Riah late on Saturday night.
However, its last position showed it pointing toward Iran. Oil tankers have previously been targeted as the Persian Gulf region took center stage in a crisis over Iran's unraveling nuclear deal with world powers.
The concern about the Riah comes as Iran continues its own high-pressure campaign over its nuclear program after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord over a year ago.
The Riah, a 58-meter (190-foot) oil tanker, typically made trips from Dubai and Sharjah on the UAE's west coast before going through the strait and heading to Fujairah on the UAE's east coast. However, something happened to the vessel after 11 p.m. on Saturday, according to tracking data.
Capt. Ranjith Raja of the data firm Refinitiv told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the tanker hadn't switched off its tracking in three months of trips around the UAE.
"That is a red flag," Raja said. no shit?
Iranian officials have not said anything publicly about the ship, nor have officials in the UAE. The US Navy's 5th Fleet, which oversees Mideast waters, declined to immediately comment.
The ship's registered owner, Dubai-based Prime Tankers LLC, told the AP it had sold the ship to another company called Mouj Al-Bahar. A man who answered a telephone number registered to the firm told the AP it didn't own any ships.

Mouj-Al-bahar, registered (2006) in Sharjah, buys used ships and scr@ps them. Also sells scr@p and run-down ship material to traders. Also, some connection to Pakistan.
Maybe someone took advantage of the standoff ? Iran did it by proxy using traitors in the UAE ?

....Heard about this early yesterday- looks like the IRGC 'encouraged ' the ship to change course into Iranian waters...where it was then seized for violating Iranian waters.
The IRGC is bound and determined to get some hostages, and they don't care who they are at this point.

An Emirates oil tanker doesn't simply drift into Iranian waters. This is the work of the sand people no doubt.

Another possibility - turned of transponder and went to Iran to pick up a cheap but banned load of oil to resell elsewhere, & transponder will be repaired once the delivery is made.
The traditional hostage taking continues apace, now adding a Frenchwoman to the Iranian collection.
