[NYPOST] Jeffrey Deskovic spent 16 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of raping and strangling a Peekskill high school classmate in 1990. Now he says he’s been wronged again.
The Bronx law student, now 45, is suing two TV producers for the return of more than $1 million he thought he was investing to create programs dedicated to helping innocent people behind bars.
But producer Terry Murphy, who has worked on projects for Oprah and the Jerry Springer Show, and Paul Viollis, a security expert and podcast host, used the funds "for living expenses and personal luxuries," court papers filed last week in Manhattan Supreme Court say.

Being convicted and incarcerated for a crime you didn't commit is the misfortune of being caught up in legal system malpractice. Believing that handing money to "TV producers" is an investment is stupidity.

gorb, just think for a sec: suppose you where a highschooler railroaded for a horrible crime you are innocent of (you know what they do in jail to rapists-murderers?) - would you give a f*ck about other people?
[AZCENTRAL] Phoenix police nabbed Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out! a man suspected of biting off part of his boyfriend's ear during an altercation over an alleged affair, officials said.
Edward Gomez, 25, was taken into custody Thursday after he and his boyfriend got into a physical altercation in an apartment bathroom, court records said.
Officers responded about 5:30 p.m. and found the victim in the parking lot of the apartment complex "holding part of his left ear in his hand," police said.
The injured man told police he and Gomez were in a relationship for three years. He said the altercation was verbal at first and that it turned physical after Gomez cornered him in the bathroom.

[Cambridge Tab] Dr. Victoria Bateman, economics fellow at Gonville and Caius college, is holding a show next week to expose the brutal "naked truth" of Britain’s decision to leave the EU.
In the past, Dr. Bateman has stirred up controversy and gained renown for her naked protests. Next Monday (14th January), she will be hosting a free talk at 7pm at the J2 in Cambridge, where she will take to the stage in the nude to represent how Britain will be left "naked and vulnerable" when we leave the EU.
In the lecture, Dr. Bateman will draw on her extensive economic knowledge to explain the economic, social and political harm that Brexit will have, and discuss the detrimental impact of the deal on the academic community.
Afterwards, she will hold a Q&A session and audience members will be given the special chance to sign the "first living human petition" against Brexit. She has told the public to "expect impassioned argument and nudity in equal measure" at the event.
Dr. Bateman has boldly campaigned in the past, hosting other naked protests against Brexit and also against gender inequality in the economic sector. For example, in 2016 she turned up naked to a meeting for the faculty of economics with the words "Brexit leaves Britain naked" written across her chest.
This is another one that shows how bad things are getting in Airstrip One.

“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better.
When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity.
To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.” ― Theodore Dalrymple
[Hot Air] France has now experienced thirteen straight weeks of yellow vest protests in the streets, many turning into riots, where demonstrators have demanded President Emmanuel Macron abscond from office. It’s a clear signal of public opposition to the "reforms" Macron has been trying to enact as well as a broader rejection of globalist economic initiatives. But is the movement threatening to spill outside that nation’s borders? The AP reports that this weekend saw similar activity well to the northeast in Latvia, where demonstrators made direct references to the French troubles.
Earlier Saturday, activists in Latvia staged a picket in front of the French embassy in Riga, the capital of the small Baltic EU country, to support the yellow vest movement and urge Latvians to demand higher living standards.
The activists waved Latvia’s red-and-white flag, shouting slogans like "the French have woken up, while Latvians remain asleep."
This has been brewing for a few weeks now. In mid-January, smaller protests called by the Latvian Russian Union (LKS) resulted in people showing up wearing yellow vests and mimicking some of the speeches given by protest leaders in Paris. Thus far, however, violence has not broken out and the demonstrations remain largely peaceful.

Some weeks back there was a small yellow vest protest in Israel, and there have been copycat protests in Belgium or Holland — or both, I don’t recall exactly. Heaven only knows what they think they’re protesting.
The colonists are restless. The Latvian Russian Union is an ethnic minority, left-wing political party in Latvia, supported mainly by ethnic Russians and other Russian-speaking minorities.
BUDAPEST, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Sunday a raft of new tax and loan benefits for families as part of efforts by his government to increase the birth rate while holding a hard line against immigration.
Orban, one of the most outspoken critics of mass immigration to Europe from the Middle East and Asia, also said that his government aimed to keep economic growth 2 percent above the European Union average in the coming years despite an expected global slowdown.
"There are fewer and fewer children born in Europe. For the West, the answer (to that challenge) is immigration. For every missing child there should be one coming in and then the numbers will be fine," he said in his annual state of the nation speech.
"But we do not need numbers. We need Hungarian children," Orban said, announcing a seven-point programme of benefits for families and newly-weds.
The new measures include the expansion of a loan programme for families with at least two children to help them buy homes, subsidies for car purchases and waiving personal income tax for women raising at least four children.
Women below 40 who marry for the first time will be eligible for a 10 million forint ($36,000) subsidised loan, Orban said. A third of the debt will be forgiven when a second child is born and the entire loan waived after the third child.

EC -- it helps them afford children, which removes one block. It's also a signal of support.

There were some rather impressive cultures in 7th century, the problem (IMO) is tribal people pretending (to themselves first and foremost) to be civilized.

People who don't want babies must be some kind of sick. Nature hates that so any country that can't keep it's birthrate at or above 2 children per family will inevitably be overrun by a new population that can. But it's the end of civilization if that new population happens to be muslim. Is our civilization sick? How do we heal it?

Western civilization is sick. It sickened after World War 1, and kept getting sicker. People frequently point to decreasing levels of faith, but I'm not convinced. Socialism and environmentalism are essentially faiths, after all, even if godless ones. And traditionally, pagan areas like India and China never stopped having kids. I personally think that we have destroyed ourselves by making our society so impersonal (especially in the last 40 years, with walls of bureaucracy hiding every imaginable decision maker and even now technology hiding our friends). It makes life less worth living.
[Express] ITALY is seeking "closest possible ties" with the UK and is ready to break up the unity of the European Union by striking a bilateral deal with London to protect its citizens by securing trade deals in Britain.
The appeal launched by Brussels not to undermine its negotiating position on Brexit by seeking bilateral agreements between EU member states and the UK is being ignored by rebels Italy. As Brexit day approaches, the eurosceptic Lega-Five Star Movement coalition is growing increasingly worried about the consequences a no deal scenario could have on Italy’s fragile economy. This pushed the populist government sitting in Rome to draw up emergency plans to safeguard financial stability and save trade with London from disruption in case of a no-deal Brexit.

The Rubes are starting to wake up to the fact that the EU is (1) An unelected aristocracy in the form of its faceless bureaucracy, and (2) the Troika of FR-BEL-GER are the Masters of Europe™ and they are the Serfs in this happy little party... Without an EU (Imperial Stormtroopers™?) Army they only have the police and lawyers to maintain control.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Astonishing images of anti-government Yellow Vest protestors fighting each other have emerged in France.
Rival groups faced off in Lyon on a day when they were meant to be united in protest against President Emmanuel Macron's government.
'A Right-wing group of Yellow Vests attacked a Left-wing one, and the result was carnage,' said a protestor who witnessed the violence in the South East city on Saturday.
'They were using any weapons they could lay their hands on, and in the end the police had to break them up.'
The scenes were captured by other witnesses who posted their videos on social media.
The Twitter feed the article linked to can be seen here. When I first scrolled through there was a photo of a group of yellow vest men with the Communist sickle on their backs, so I assume the fighting was between neo-Nazis and Communists, or Communists vs Antifas, or some combination thereof — violently self-righteous asses all, doing their very best to transition the movement from Menscheviks to Bolscheviks.
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - More than 100 people died in two Indian states after drinking bootleg alcohol, police and media said on Monday, in the worst such case in years.
Many of those who died in Haridwar in Uttarkhand state and two districts in neighboring Uttar Pradesh complained of stomach pains and respiratory problems, relatives and officials said.
Police have arrested four people in connection with the deaths, Haridwar senior superintendent of police Janmaijai Prabhakar told Reuters.
"Total casualties in Haridwar remain at 36 and right now around 18 people are undergoing treatment," he said.
Officials in Uttar Pradesh could not be reached for latest casualty figures on Monday, but at least 69 people have died in the state, according to newspapers Indian Express and Times of India.
Deaths from illegally-produced alcohol, known locally as "hooch" or "country liquor", are a regular occurrence in India, where many cannot afford branded spirits.

[BBC] A football player and refugee whose detention in Thailand sparked an outcry has been freed from jail after Bahrain withdrew its extradition request.
Hakeem Al-Araibi, who is a Bahraini citizen, fled to Australia in 2014 and was granted political asylum.
He was detained in Bangkok in November on an Interpol notice requested by Bahrain. He had travelled to the Thai capital on honeymoon.
He was sentenced in absentia to 10 years for vandalising a police station.
Al-Araibi, 25, denies the charges and human rights activists say he could face torture if sent back to Bahrain. He has been a vocal critic of Bahraini authorities.
His case has been taken up by high-profile footballers, with stars including Didier Drogba and Jamie Vardy calling for his release. The Australian government, Fifa and the International Olympic Committee all lobbied Thailand
Thailand's Office of the Attorney General (OAG) asked the court to end proceedings against Al-Araibi because Bahrain had said it no longer wanted him, officials told BBC Thai on Monday.
"This morning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us that Bahrain was no longer interested in this request," OAG foreign office chief Chatchom Akapin said.
Al-Araibi is expected to leave Thailand on Monday evening for Australia.
[Express] IRAN will expand its military power and ballistic missile programme in a blatent act of retaliation against nations who have bid to curb Iran's military might, the country's President warned today.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Monday that Iran was determined to expand its military power and ballistic missile programme despite mounting pressure from hostile countries to curb Iran's defensive work, state TV reported.
"We have not asked and will not ask for permission to develop different types of ... missiles and will continue our path and our military power," Rouhani said in a speech at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) square, where tens of thousands gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of Iran's Islamic revolution.
Rouhani also vowed Iran would defeat U.S. sanctions, reimposed after President Donald Trump withdrew from Tehran's nuclear accord with world powers last year.
"The Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties (due to the sanctions) but we will overcome the problems by helping each other," Rouhani said.
Hundreds of thousands of Iranians held nation-wide rallies on Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Shah and the triumph of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shi'ite cleric who led an Islamic Revolution that rattles the West to this day.
[TheDeclination] There is a woman ‐ Diana Helmuth ‐ who wrote a first-person essay for Curbed, a San Fransisco area website. She was telling the story of a dear friend of hers, who was moving from SF to Pittsburgh, and the trip to the airport that left her in tears at her loss of a close friend.
She had realized that many of her friends had left ‐ 12 in all ‐ and that they were generally not employed in the tech fields, but in relatively low-paid fields. Some were leaving for a job, others for a more affordable life. Some wanted to have a family or home, and realized that it was never going to happen unless they left.
So, 1 by 1, this women’s social circle is developing gaping holes in it. In her naiveté, she implores the residents who see fleeing CA refugees to realize that they are good people, just hoping for a better life.
And, I’m sure she believes that.
They may have ’good hearts and big dreams’, but what the resistant old residents of the new locations are wary of is the newcomers’ refusal to recognize several important things:
The state of CA has become ruined due to their own actions ‐ voting in high taxes, limiting residential homes/apartments, zoning that keeps out affordable housing, overbearing Big Brother government, a prevailing ethos of "you BETTER watch what you say and do or we will RUIN you".
CA has held its arms open to illegal immigrants, because cynical Dems want the votes, as well as the increased representation in the House of Representatives.
Only the poor-to-middle-class suffer from the problems illegal immigrants bring in. It’s their local school systems that have been over-saturated with non-ESL students, overage "minors", and virtually uneducated students. The rich can afford the exclusive private schools, or to live in a community that insulates itself from those problems.
It’s not that they hate YOU, it’s that they hate the cultural assumptions that you bring with you:
That they are inbred hicks
That they’re dumber than you
That the way they live is designed to oppress minorities, reject LGB‐‐?, and force their Christian religion on you
That the reason they don’t think like you is because you haven’t explained it well enough, rather than the truth ‐ it doesn’t matter how long you lecture them about the superiority of your values, they think those values are severely lacking
You want to change that place ‐ NOW!
You expect your natural superiority will entitle you to immediately take leadership roles in any community activity
You turn your nose up and roll your eyes at the food, dress, and interests of the locals
You cannot keep your damn mouth shut about your dumba$$ opinions
That about covers it.
I’ve lived in cities, small towns, and rural areas. I’ve always been warmly welcomed, but a lot of that is probably because I didn’t come in with wrinkled nose about my new home, and immediately set about changing the neighbors "for their own good".
Treading lightly in new environments is a real good idea, if you want to be accepted. CA metastasis?

I have found Pittsburgh to be a tough town very much like NY or NJ. In a hurry when dealing with anyone. I found DC to be a bit better believe it or not. DC however is so political and politically opinionated. I enjoyed leaving that behind.

Off course some cynical people on the Right are interested in cheap labor. Between the cynics on the Left and Right is why nothing ever gets done to control immigration
