Egypt deports German of Egyptian origin for attempting to join Daesh terrorist elements in Sinai: MENA
[AlAhram] The 24-year-old student, who tried to enter the country through Cairo Airport to join Daesh terrorists, was deported after he gave up his Egyptian citizenship

Egypt has deported a German national of Egyptian origin on suspicion of attempting to join ISIS terrorist elements in Sinai, and is also set to deport another over similar accusations. the state official news agency MENA reported on Friday.

According to MENA, the authorities said they recently incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
German national Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz, 24, upon arriving in the country at Cairo International Airport from saudi Arabia.

Abdel-Aziz, a student at Soddy Arabia

’s Islamic University, was attempting to join ISIS terrorist elements in Sinai, the authorities said.

The authorities also explained that since they determined that Abdel-Aziz had not committed any crime per Egyptian law, he was deported to Germany, in coordination with the German Embassy in Egypt, after he agreed to give up his Egyptian nationality.

MENA said that the authorities has also recently arrested another German of Egyptian origin identified as Issa El-Sabagh, 19, upon arriving at Luxor International Airport from Germany as he was found in possession of maps of North Sinai.

The authorities said they determined after investigations that El-Sabbagh shares the beliefs of the ISIS terrorist group in Germany and is connected online to some of their members.

El-Sabbagh arrived in Egypt planning to join bandidos Lions of Islam elements in North Sinai, the authorities said.

The government said that it did not consider El-Sabbagh an Egyptian national since he automatically lost that right in 2007 while a minor, when his father gave up his Egyptian nationality to attain German citizenship.

Legal procedures to deport El-Sabbagh to Germany have been finalized, MENA added.
Deutsche Welle adds:
A 23-year-old German-Egyptian citizen detained by Egyptian authorities at Cairo airport on December 27 has arrived back home in the central German city of Göttingen. Germany's Foreign Ministry confirmed the man's return on Friday.

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, who was in possession of a German and an Egyptian passport when he was detained in Cairo, was traveling with his brother Malik at the time of his arrest. The two men arrived in Cairo from Soddy Arabia

, where they are enrolled in the Islamic studies program at the Islamic University of Medina. The men said that they were in Egypt to visit their grandparents.

Citing anonymous sources, the public broadcaster SWR reported Friday that the 23-year-old is known to authorities as a suspected radical Islamist.

Separately, a second man, 18-year-old Isa El Sabbagh from the northern German city of Giessen remains in Egyptian custody. El Sabbagh went missing on December 17. His whereabouts remained unknown until Egyptian authorities announced that he was in their custody on January 10.

El Sabbagh, who also holds dual German-Egyptian citizenship, was reportedly in Egypt to visit his grandfather when he was arrested at Luxor airport. Al-Ahram reported that authorities found maps of North Sinai, an Islamist hotbed, in his possession at the time of his arrest. Egypt has been engaged in heavy fighting in the region since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was removed from power in 2013.

Nigeria: Troops Clear Boko Haram From Baga, Kukawa, Others
[All Africa] The Nigerian Army yesterday said troops of the newly formed Nigerian Army Special Forces Command (NASFC) Operation Lafiya Dole, dislodged bandidos Death Eaters that attacked troop's location in Baga, Borno State.

A statement from army front man, Brigadier General Sani Usman said the 707 Special Forces Brigade dealt the decisive blow that neutralized several bandidos Death Eaters along that axis.

He said, "The Special Forces commenced clearance operations on 28th December 2018, where they cleared Zare, Gudumbali, Kukawa and Cross Kauwa without any resistance from suspected terrorists."

Usman said, "Though some of the bandidos Death Eaters attempted to infiltrate troops camp at Monguno, the gallant troops lured them and neutralized many of them and recovered some arms and ammunition."

He said, "The troops who are in high spirit had since linked up with other forces in Baga where they cleared the Naval Base and the surrounding areas."

"Unfortunately, in the process, the Special Forces lost one officer and a soldier, while five other soldiers sustained injuries.

"The remains of the two fallen heroes and the maimed have since been evacuated. The injured soldiers are in stable, pH balanced condition and receiving medical attention.

"The troops are now busy consolidating and clearing vestiges of the bandidos Death Eaters within the northern Borno State axis with special emphasis on the Lake Chad region.

"The Special Forces attained these great strides in close operational synergy with Air Task Force of the Nigerian Air Force who gave Intelligence and closes air support by bombarding the ISWAP terrorists.

"The outstanding and daredevil exploits of the NAF's pilots gave more courage and firepower to the troops. Similarly, the Nigerian Navy Special Forces were not left out of these gallant efforts," the Army statement said.

12 civilians killed in jihadist attack in Burkina Faso
[PULSE.NG] Twelve non-combatants were killed on Thursday during a jihadist attack in the north of Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
, which has been battling a wave of Islamist violence, officials said Friday.

Burkina Faso has declared a state of emergency in several provinces and replaced its army chief this week as it struggles to put a stop to a spate of jihadist attacks

The west African country declared a state of emergency in several provinces at the end of last year and on Thursday replaced its army chief as it struggled to put a stop to a spate of such attacks.

In the latest violence, button men attacked a village market in broad daylight, the security ministry said in a statement issued late Friday.

"Around 30 armed individuals perpetrated... a terrorist attack in the village of Gasseliki," it said, giving a toll of 12 dead and two maimed.

"A barn, a cart and six shops were also set alight," it added.

A local source told AFP that the attackers "ransacked stores and opened fire on people who had gathered for the weekly market".

Jihadist attacks began in northern Burkina Faso in 2015 but then spread to the east, near the border with Togo and Benin.

The country is part of the vast Sahel region
... North Africa's answer to the Pak tribal areas...
and one of the poorest states in the world.

The region turned into a hotbed of violent extremism and lawlessness after chaos engulfed Libya in 2011, which was followed by an Islamist insurgency in northern Mali and the rise of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
in northern Nigeria.

Most attacks in Burkina Faso itself have been attributed to the jihadist group Ansarul Islam, which emerged near the Mali border in December 2016, and to the JNIM (the Group to Support Islam and Moslems),
...Mali's most prominent jihadi group, Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Moslemin (JNIM). JNIM is an umbrella organization of regional terrorist groups including al-Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM) Sahara Emirate, al-Mourabitoun, and local groups Macina Liberation Front (MLF) and Ansar al-Din (AAD)...
which has sworn allegiance to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Ansarul Islam emerged as violence spilled over from Mali, where radical Islamists seized key Sahara towns in 2012 before being ousted by French troops.

Smaller groups are also active, with the overall number of fighters estimated to be in the hundreds, according to security sources.

The groups are believed to be responsible for more than 270 deaths since 2015. The capital Ouagadougou has been hit three times and almost 60 people have died there.

The jihadists extend their hold gradually, forcing government workers and others who oppose them to flee. The violence has so far displaced some 40,000 people.

In the north, gangs move freely through the country's mostly non-existent borders.

The jihadists mainly target the security forces, but also attack government officials and local chiefs who oppose them.

Teachers are vulnerable due to the jihadists' fierce opposition to secular, French education, with their threats and attacks sparking the closure of hundreds of schools in the north and the east.

As the country struggles to get on top of the violence, army chief Major General Oumarou Sadou was replaced on Thursday by General Moise Minoungou, according to a presidential decree read on public television.

Violent explosion shakes Yemen’s Aden refineries, massive fire breaks out
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A violent kaboom rocked Aden’s oil refineries and broke out massive fire on Friday.

Al Arabiya’s correspondent, Radfan al-Dabees, said that one of the oil tanks was subject to gunfire, and a short circuit might have caused the kaboom.

Dabees also pointed out mixed information around the real reason for the kaboom and the fire.

An official at the refinery told AFP that "the tank that was on fire contains little amounts of oil, and the civil defense is trying to contain the fire and its expansion to other tanks that are full of oil and diesel."

The official said that the fire that started in one of the tanks and further expanded to the pipes "is most likely due to a subversive action done by subversive people."

A security source said that security forces have "stopped all workers from leaving and opened an investigation following initial news about the accident being an attack."

Aden refinery’s CEO, Mohammed al-Bekri, said that civil denfese and the company’s firefighting team were able to contain the fire that started at around 7 pm local time on Friday.

He added that the process of containing the fire and preventing it from spreading took as long as an hour and a half.

The refinery had been affected by the war in 2015, and went back to operating in 2016 after more than a year.

The attack happened after Houthis attacked on Thursday al-Anad airbase, a historical airbase established by the British in Yemen, after which Martin Griffiths, the UN's envoy to Yemen, called on both parties to "exercise restraint."

Turkey reinforces troops on border with Syria’s Idlib
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
sent a convoy of commando units and armoured vehicles to the Ottoman Turkish province of Hatay on the Syrian border, state-owned Anadolu news agency said on Friday.

The convoy was being sent to reinforce a Ottoman Turkish military presence on the border near the northern Syrian province of Idlib, the last major rebel stronghold in Syria, Anadolu said.

The convoy had reached Hatay’s Yayladagi region, from which it moved towards the units on the border, the agency said.

A Ottoman Turkish security source said the Ottoman Turkish army had been rotating forces in and out of the region, and declined to say whether the latest movement was in preparation for an operation inside Idlib province itself.

On Friday, US National Security Advisor John Bolton said that talks between the US military and its Ottoman Turkish counterparts on the Kurds and Syria will continue next week, in the hopes of producing results both countries accept.

On Thursday, a US defense official confirmed that the US military has removed some equipment from Syria, following a report that the pullout ordered by President Donald Trump

Turkey orders arrest of more than 100 military suspects over Gulen ties
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
ordered the arrest of more than 100 soldiers and former cadets over suspected links to the network of the US-based Moslem holy man who is accused of orchestrating a 2016 attempted coup, prosecutors and state media said on Friday.

Police operations targeting supporters of holy man Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
have been carried out regularly since the failed coup and have recently gained momentum. Gulen denies involvement in the attempt, in which 250 people were killed.

The Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office said it ordered the arrest of 50 suspects - six of them officers and the rest military academy students expelled after the coup - in an investigation into people linked to Gulen in the military.

This operation, spread across 16 provinces, was focused on calls made over fixed phone lines, the statement said.

In the southern Adana province, prosecutors ordered another 52 soldiers incarcerated
You have the right to remain silent...
, 42 of them serving, in an operation spread across 20 provinces, state-owned Anadolu news agency reported.

It said colonels, majors, lieutenants and other serving officers were facing arrest over pay phone calls they made to other alleged Gulen-linked people. Many suspects have already been detained, it added.

More than 77,000 people have been jugged
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
pending trial, while 150,000 civil servants, military personnel and others have been sacked or suspended from their jobs as part of the post-coup purges. Widespread operations are still routine.

Rights groups and Turkey’s Western allies have voiced concerns over the crackdown, saying President Tayyip Erdogan has used the abortive coup as a pretext to quash dissent. The government has said the security measures were necessary due to the gravity of the threat Turkey faces.

The owner of a restaurant chain, who had been on the run for a year after an arrest warrant was issued for him on suspected links to Gulen, was detained in the Aegean coastal province of Izmir, Anadolu also reported on Friday.

Murat Sivrikaya, whose restaurant chain has 1,100 locations across Turkey, was found carrying fake identification and is accused of being a local administrator of Gulen’s network, the agency said.

Iraq
Car bomb kills at least 1 at bazaar in Iraqi border town
[Rudaw] A vehicle borne improvised bomb (VBIED) struck a bazaar in a border town in Anbar province on Friday morning killing at least one person and injuring more than a dozen.

"Terrorist attack via an explosive vehicle ‐ KIA," tweeted Iraq's defense ministry.

The attack took place near one of the markets in al-Qaim district in Anbar province near the Syrian border.

The kaboom "martyred one civilian and injured 12 others in addition to injuring four members of security forces."

There was no immediate claim of the attack.

The town is situated along the Euphrates River. The Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS), Shiite paramilitias, and local Sunni tribal forces have tried to flush ISIS remnants out of the area since a large offensive in late 2017.

IDF: Palestinian tries to stab soldiers near Hebron, is shot, critically injured
[IsraelTimes] Army says assailant hospitalized after incident at West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba.

A Paleostinian man tried to carry out a stabbing attack near the West Bank city of Hebron
...Hamas Central in the West Bank...
on Friday and was shot and critically injured by troops, the army said.

The Israel Defense Forces said the attacker was "neutralized" after attempting to stab soldiers at an army post near the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, and was taken to the hospital.

Channel 10 news released video footage showing the maimed attacker on the ground covered by a blanket and a knife on the sidewalk nearby. Other images showed the assailant being taken away by troops on a stretcher.

There were no other injuries.

In addition to the soldiers, the IDF said an Israeli civilian also fired at the assailant.

The army said additional troops were dispatched to the Givat Avot neighborhood, where the incident took place.

Hebron and its environs are a frequent flashpoint, with the southern West Bank city divided between Israeli and Paleostinian control and the two populations often coming into contact with each other.

IDF nabs Palestinian cell suspected of shooting at West Bank settlement
[IsraelTimes] Shots fired at Migdal Oz, near Jerusalem, from rooftop in next-door Paleostinian town, causing no injuries.

The Israeli military this week placed in durance vile
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
a number of Paleostinian men suspected of carrying out a shooting attack on a West Bank settlement, the army said Friday.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, late last Saturday night the cell opened fire from a rooftop in the Paleostinian village of Beit Fajjar at the Israeli settlement of Migdal Oz next door.

The gunshots did not hit anyone in the settlement or cause damage, but a soldier in the area had spotted the incident, the army said.

"The suspects were identified by the soldier monitoring surveillance cameras in the regional brigade’s command center. She notified the troops, who hopped over to the village and started searching," the IDF said.

"In addition, an investigation into the incident was launched and, in the end, the arrests were carried out in order to thwart the cell," the army said in a statement.

A military spokesperson refused to disclose the number of people arrested as part of the investigation, saying it was "sensitive."

The guns allegedly used in the attack were also confiscated, the army said. They were locally produced, makeshift weapons that appeared to be constructed of metal pipes and electrical tape.

"I saw a number of suspects who went up to one of the roofs on the outskirts of the village. A few moments later, I noticed that they had guns in their hands. I tracked them and directed troops to the area," the soldier said.

Separately, overnight Thursday, the Israeli military escorted hundreds of worshipers to pilgrimage sites in the northern West Bank.

According to the IDF, some 450 people were allowed to visit the Itamar and Elazar tombs in the Paleostinian village of Awarta.

The military said the prayers at the site "were held as scheduled."

Palestinian woman said killed as 13,000 riot at Gaza fence; IAF hits Hamas posts
[IsraelTimes] Egypt tries to soothe tensions as Strip’s terrorist rulers step up threats of attacks, calling for Israel to let in Qatar

A Paleostinian woman was rubbed out by IDF troops during a mass riot along the Gazoo border with Israel on Friday, the Strip’s Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",-run health ministry said, as the Hamas terror group threatened renewed violence over fresh quarrels with Israel and the Paleostinian Authority.

The air force attacked two Hamas posts in northern Gazoo in response to violence, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The army said some 13,000 Paleostinians participated in the riots along the fence, throwing rocks, fire bombs and hand-grenades at Israeli troops, burning tires and trying to breach the security fence. Israeli soldiers responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire, the army said.

The Hamas-run Gazoo health ministry identified the dead woman as Amal Tramsi, 43, saying she was the third woman to die in months of festivities.

At least 15 other Paleostinians were maimed by Israeli fire during the border riots, the ministry said. One of them was reportedly a journalist, hurt when an ambulance was hit.

An Israeli soldier was lightly injured by a rock, the IDF said.

The army said it identified several incidents where Paleostinians tried to breach the fence and in one instance opened fire on them.

"IDF troops monitored the suspects in each incident and all the suspects returned to the Gazoo Strip soon after crossing," the army said. "In response to the violent events along the security fence, an IDF aircraft targeted a Hamas military post."

Aircraft later hit a second post.

The army said one soldier was lightly maimed by stone throwers and taken to hospital for treatment.

The Israeli army had braced for an outbreak of renewed violence along the Gazoo border, as tensions escalated between Jerusalem and the Hamas terror group that rules the Strip as well as between the Paleostinian Authority and Hamas.

The Egyptian military sent a senior delegation to the Paleostinian enclave on Thursday, led by deputy chief of the Egyptian General Intelligence Services Ayman Badia, in an effort to negotiate a settlement on some of the issues and prevent an escalation.

The delegation left Gazoo on Friday afternoon and traveled to Ramallah in the West Bank for talks with the PA.

Throughout the morning, Paleostinians along the border launched balloons laden with incendiary devices across the border into Israel. As of Friday afternoon, they had caused no significant damage.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
more serious festivities with Israeli troops began later in the day, following afternoon prayers, as has been the case since March 2018, with the start of the "March of Return" protests, an initially civilian-led movement that was quickly hijacked by Hamas. An Islamist terror group that seized control of Gazoo in 2007, Hamas seeks to destroy Israel.

As it does every week, the Israel Defense Forces deployed troops along the border ahead of Friday’s riots. No special safety instructions were given to Israeli communities near the border.

SDF capture 4 foreign ISIS jihadis – a Turk, an Afghan, two Russians
[Rudaw] Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have detained another four foreign jihadists in operations against ISIS in northern Syria, bringing the total number of imported muscle captured in the past week up to 17.

The four captured on January 9, and announced on Friday, are a Turk, and Afghan, and two Russians.

They are identified as Omro Ozon Oghlo from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Abdul-Raquf Torany from Afghanistan, and Russian nationals Muhammad Jawad Khan and Osmat Atayef.

The four ISIS members had been on a mission to "conduct terrorist attacks in Raqqa and organize hidden groups inside the city," the SDF stated, accusing them of playing a "major role" in terror attacks in Raqqa.

The Kurdish-led forces are currently holding an estimated more than 1,000 foreign jihadists, plus hundreds of women and kiddies from over 30 different countries. Their fate is uncertain. Many Western nations are resisting repatriating their nationals and the Kurds warn they may not be able to hold onto their detainees if Turkey launches a military assault against them.

Syria says Israeli fired missiles toward Damascus, hit airport warehouse
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Syrian state news agency said Israeli warplanes fired a number of missiles toward the Damascus area on Friday, triggering Syrian air defenses that shot down most of them.

"The results of the aggression so far were limited to a strike on one of the warehouses at Damascus airport," the SANA news agency cited a military source as saying. The attack took place at 11:15 p.m. (2115 GMT), it said.

Israeli warplanes last struck targets in Syria on Christmas Day. In that incident, Israeli aircraft flying over Leb fired missiles toward areas near Damascus, hitting an arms depot and wounding three soldiers.

Israeli drones and warplanes were heard flying Friday afternoon over Leb.

Israel is widely believed to have been behind a series of Arclight airstrikes in Syria that have mainly targeted Iranian and Hezbollah forces fighting alongside the Syrian government.

Israel launches first strikes in Syria this year

[ALMASDARNEWS] For the first time this year, the Israeli Air Force has launched several missiles towards the Syrian capital city of Damascus.

According to local sources, the Israeli missiles targeted the vicinity of the Damascus International Airport; this prompted the Syrian military to activate its air defenses to intercept the projectiles.

The sources added that the Syrian military was able to intercept several of the Israeli missiles, but some had reached their intended targets near the airport.

They would add that a military warehouse was heavily damaged as a result of this attack by the Israeli Air Force.

A source in Syrian Ministry of Transport confirmed to SANA later that the Damascus International Airport traffic was not affected by the strikes.
The Times of Israel adds:
“Two areas hosting military positions of Iranian forces and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement have been targeted," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

These were near the airport and around the Kisweh area south of Damascus, the observatory said.

ISIS suffers heavy losses in desperate counter-offensive in east Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) launched a desperate counter-offensive in eastern Syria, today, after losing the key town of al-Shafah to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) the day before.

ISIS reportedly began their counter-offensive during the wee hours on Friday morning, striking the defenses of the Syrian Democratic Forces at the southern axis of al-Shafah.

However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
the Islamic State’s bid to retake the town would fall short once again after suffering heavy casualties at the hands of the Syrian Democratic Forces and U.S. Coalition.

According to reports from the front, the Syrian Democratic Forces were able to restore security at the southern axis of al-Shafah following the withdrawal of the Islamic State attackers on Friday.

The Islamic State had previously reentered al-Shafah after launching a powerful attack on the town’s defenses earlier in the week; however, they would later be expelled by the Syrian Democratic Forces for the second time.
