[WASHINGTONTIMES] "Most parents homeschool for more than one reason," Mr. Ray said. "But when we ask families why do they homeschool, near the top nowadays is concern about the environment of schools, and that includes safety, pressure to get into drugs, pressure to get into sexual activity. It includes all of that."
After the Feb. 14 shooting in Parkland, Florida, vows by parents to pull their kids out of school erupted on social media, and some of them apparently followed through by making contact with their local homeschool advocates.
"I talk with these people on a regular basis, and clearly after a shooting, more of them are saying, ’Hey, we’re getting more phone calls, we’ve got more people at the beginner session asking about safety,’" Mr. Ray said.
Not everyone agrees with the homeschool response. Takisha Coats Durm, lead virtual school teacher for the Madison County Schools System in Huntsville, Alabama, said that fleeing the classroom teaches the wrong lesson.
"Even though it seems we may be protecting them, we may be sheltering them instead of teaching them to work and find a solution for the issues and not necessarily running away from them, because these things are going to happen," Ms. Durm told WAAY-TV in Huntsville. Big families are an endangered species these days, not that losing one of your eight children would be what you'd call a pleasant experience. But "these things are going to happen" is a monumentally stupid statement. They were unheard of when I went to school, therefore they didn't happen. For the longest time the expression was "going postal," since that was the favored location for brainless killings -- but I think even that may have become current after the time I quit having to do homework.
Going postal was a 1980s phenomenon, resulting from an efficiency drive that greatly increased the speed at which the back room staff was required to process items for the next step of their various journeys — so definitely after your schoolboy days.

Easier to fit range time in the schedule when you home school.

Don't forget "left-wing indoctrination" to add to the list of good reasons for home schooling.

Educating children is the last thing the public school system is about. It is first and foremost an iron rice bowl for all school employees and vendors, school boards are a farm team for local politics and the whole thing is an excuse to tax ever increasing amounts of private sector wealth into a public sector black hole.

Is she saying it's the new normal?
The kids have no influence, no power, so how can you expect them to work and find a solution? They're sitting ducks and there's nothing they can do about it. The politicians and teachers unions are calling all the shots and they have their heads up their butts.
High school is a joke anyway. It's a waste of time especially for the young people in the prime of their lives to have to sit in totally irrelevant classes. Nobody is learning anything worthwhile. The kids graduate from high school totally unprepared for any kind of a job so they have to go to college after which they will most likely be in their mid-20s and still unprepared and deep in debt to boot. I think our country's educational system is more of a scam than anything else. It's a crime that's even more horrendous than school shootings in terms of wasted time.

My own cynicism suspects the extortion funding of schools is to make it more likely that both parents work thus boosting land values (amongst other effects).
Another little boost to the establishment welfare state.

JQC, all my grandchildren have been K-12 homeschooled to escape the "left-wing indoctrination".
My oldest grandson is an engineering major in college and he feels that he's had a much better educational background than the majority of his peers. He actually was prepared for the required math upon entry a couple years ago.
He still had to take the required 'Diversity' course, but he was prepared and insulated by his Catholic upbringing regarding 'guilt'.

[PRESSTV] Uganda's parliament has imposed a tax on the use of social media in a bid to raise revenue but opponents of the law say it aims to stifle criticism of President Yoweri Museveni ...President-for-Life of Uganda. He assumed office in 1985. His primary virtue is being prefereable to both his predecessors, Idi Amin and Milton Obote... , who has been in power since 1986.
Users will be charged 200 shillings ($0.0531) per day for services such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. That amounts to around $19 per year in a country where gross domestic product per capita was around $615 in 2016, according to World Bank figures.
The tax was passed on Wednesday as part of an overhaul of an excise duty law due to take effect next financial year which starts in July, parliament front man Chris Obore told Rooters.
A junior finance minister previously told journalists the tax would be levied daily by mobile phone operators on each SIM card used to access any of the targeted social media platforms.
There was no immediate comment from cell phone operators or social media companies, but rights advocates denounced the move.
"It (tax) is a new tool of stifling free expression and citizen organising that has been beyond the control of the state," said Nicholas Opiyo, a Kampala-based lawyer who also heads a local rights organization.
"It's intended to curtail the ever increasing central role of social media in political organising," he said.
A government front man did not return a call seeking comment but authorities have previously denied such accusations.
About 40 percent of Uganda's 40 million people use the internet, according to data from the regulating body Uganda Communications Commission. Facebook and WhatsApp are widely used in Uganda and many other African countries.

[NEWZIMBABWE] Escalating pie fights caused by machetes in Midlands which have resulted in numerous deaths and life threatening injuries are to be blamed on Zanu PF heavy weights in the province, the former President Bob Muggsy Mugabe Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. "We are saddened by the loss of lives especially here in Kwekwe. The deaths were avoidable," NPF president Ambrose Mutinhiri said at the party launch in Kwekwe over the weekend.
Mutinhiri said Zanu PF bigwigs are the ones who are controlling gold mining activities in Kwekwe.
He, however, lamented the continued penury on ordinary citizens in the mineral rich province.
"Midlands is a mineral rich province but people are living in poverty regardless of the resources in the province. Only a few individuals from the ruling party are benefitting," he said.
Zanu PF politicians in the province, in March, seized a foreign-owned gold mine and allowed party youths to mass into the property in what has been seen as a vote buying gimmick ahead of the polls this year.
Gaika gold mine is owned by Jersey-based and privately owned Duration Gold.
The seizure of the company’s Kwekwe property was reportedly facilitated by known Zanu PF politicians and is understood to have the backing of senior party officials in the province.
Giaka Mine has since been shut down after the company owners sought a High Court interdict to stop operations.
Illegal mining activities have, however, continued unabated.
In recent months, Kwekwe has seen a rise injuries and death by machete.
"The obtaining situation is very disturbing. The situation has now completely gone out of hand but it’s difficult to control since there are powerful figures behind the operations," Mutinhiri told the gathering.
Meanwhile, ...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter awoke groggily, his hand still stuck in the Ming vase... Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube has said police must arrest anyone found in possession of a machete.
"I am calling on the police to arrest anyone they are going to find in possession of a machete. We want a peaceful society-a society which is free from machetes," Ncube recently said.

[NEWZIMBABWE] IN a suspected case of witchcraft, incumbent MDC-T councilor for Mutare Central Ward Four Edson Kalulu had his celebration cut short after he discovered some ’muti’ dumped at his doorstep following his victory in the recent primary elections.
Kalulu lives in Mundembe area in Sakubva high density suburb.
Kalulu defeated other three contestants namely Pauline Hendeni, Ernest Manzinde and Susan Makombere well known as "Mai Tracy".
Kalulu said he was shocked to see a clay pot, small bag, a bottle containing what looked like water, tree roots, black human hair, a small broom and a letter containing a threatening message at his door step on Sunday morning.
"I’m not sure who did this but I was shaken when I woke up to find a clay-pot, small bag, bottle of what looked like water, roots, black human hair, two needles, small used broom and a written letter which reads, ’You won’t last this whole year", "Gore rino hauripedzi" he said.
According to Kalulu, he strongly suspects that this was an act of retaliation by bitter supporters of his rivals.
"I suspect that the supporters of my opponents might have done this as they are not happy with my victory in the primaries," he said.
After discovering strange items, the councilor engaged the services of prominent Mutare prophet known as Madzibaba Skynage.
Madzibaba Skynage, who plies his trade at Maonde Shrines, visited Kalulu’s house and conducted a cleansing ceremony before burning all the objects. The ceremony took almost two hours from 6 to 9am.
Some eyewitness said the event could have been stage managed as a strategy to attract sympathy from the electorate.
"Remember this is election period, the event could have been stage managed to attract sympathy from voters," said one eyewitness.
But others who were interviewed said the event was real since the primary elections were tightly contested this year and rival supporters wanted to Dire Revenge by harming the winner.

[NEWZIMBABWE] THE trial of two suspected ivory poaching kingpins who allegedly worked under the instructions of former Firts Lady Grace Mugabe failed to kick off on Thursday after the state indicated that exhibits were locked up.
Prosecutor, La Belle Francesca Mukumbiri, told court that the person who keeps the keys was not available.
In addition, the state has also not availed documents requested by the defence lawyers, further stalling progress.
The accused are Fanken Madzinga, 48, a registered dealer of ivory manufacturing and his driver Tafadzwa Pamire. They are answering to charges of contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act.
Through their lawyers, the two asked for several documents they require in crafting their defence.
These include the informant’s work permit and telephone print outs among other documents.
The informant is a Polish photo journalist who was doing an investigative story which he picked in China.
Madzinga and his accomplice were tossed in the clink Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up! after the police received a tip off to the effect that the two were part of an ivory poaching syndicate.
The journalist then masqueraded as a buyer before nailing the two.
There are also reports that the two disclosed that Grace was part of the syndicate after they were convinced the informer would buy lots of ivory from them.
This, however, has not been disclosed in court papers.
According to the papers, the tip off was received on February 14 this year.
Court heard the informer told the police that he had managed to entice the two to sell him the ivory after posing as a potential buyer.
He told the police that he was going to meet the suspects in central Harare for the purposes of making transactions.
A team of detectives was then set up in order to arrest the two.
It is alleged that a trap was set and the two were arrested in Highfields where they were caught transferring ivory from their vehicle to the informant’s car.
According to court papers, the ivory is valued at $22 797.

London’s Evening Standard newspaper, edited by the former chancellor George Osborne, has agreed a £3 million deal with six leading commercial companies, including Google and Uber, promising them "money-can’t-buy" positive news and "favourable" comment coverage, openDemocracy can reveal.
The project, called London 2020, is being directed by Osborne. It effectively sweeps away the conventional ethical divide between news and advertising inside the Standard ‐ and is set to include "favourable" news coverage of the firms involved, with readers unable to differentiate between "news" that is paid-for and other commercially-branded content.
Leading companies, most operating global businesses, were given detailed sales presentations by Evening Standard executives at the newspaper’s west London offices in an effort to sign them up to the lucrative deal.
Among those that have paid half a million pounds each to be involved are international taxi-app firm Uber, which is facing an imminent court appeal against the decision to cancel its licence to operate in London. The Evening Standard has previously come under fire for not declaring Osborne’s £650,000-a-year part time job with the fund managers BlackRock, who hold a £500m stake in Uber.
The global tech giant, Google, still recovering from reputational damage over its low UK tax bills and criticism over its close relationship to the Cameron-Osborne government, has also signed up.
Some companies, including Starbucks, walked away from the Evening Standard’s pitch, rejecting the offer of paying to boost their reputations through tailored news and comment.
London 2020 is scheduled to start on June 5. Unbranded news stories, expected to be written by staff reporters ‐ but paid for by the new commercial "partners" as part of the 2020 deal ‐ have already been planned for inclusion in the paper’s news pages within a week of the project’s launch.
Continues.

A spokesman for ESI Media said that the “allegations about the Evening Standard are baseless and wrong.”
“We would never offer ‘positive news’ coverage and ‘favourable’ comment as part of a commercial deal. The Evening Standard’s editorial integrity and independence is always at the heart of everything we do and is beyond question. That’s why we have such a big and loyal readership.

[AlAhram] U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol ended a meeting early on Thursday after making good progress in talks aimed at laying groundwork for a possible summit between President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. [PRESSTV] North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un ...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished... says his country's will to rid the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons remains "unchanged," confirming that he is committed to a much-anticipated summit with US President Donald Trump ...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States... "The DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)'s will for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula still remains unchanged and consistent and fixed," the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted Kim as saying during a rare meeting with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Pyongyang on Thursday.
The statements came shortly after remarks by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who asked Kim Yong-chol, Kim's perceived right-hand man, whether Pyongyang was still committed to denuclearization.
Pompeo and the North Korean official met in New York earlier in the day to discuss a possible Kim-Trump meet in Singapore on June 12.
The top US diplomat said during the meeting that Washington would "ramp up the pressure" on the North Koreans if the recent diplomatic efforts between the two sides failed.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Chinese firm Poly Technologies recently redisplayed a counter-drone laser weapon system at a military equipment exhibition in Kazakhstan in a bid to capture a share of the growing market for anti-drone defense systems.
The Silent Killer’s laser successfully intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from 300 meters away during a mock demonstration, the Asia Times reported May 30. The system is tailored to eliminate low-flying, slow-moving and small-sized targets, notes the People’s Daily, a Chinese publication.
The Silent Killer also relies on electronic capabilities such as anti-jamming to withstand incoming electronic attacks that can make the system inoperable.
While it is unclear if the demonstration featured the Silent Killer operating from a mobile platform or a fixed location, Poly Technologies representatives said the drone killer could be mounted on a ship for naval warfare as well.
Military applications aside, the anti-UAV system may be more popular among privacy enthusiasts or celebrities worried about drones taking pictures of them inside their homes. Poly Technologies offers a civilian-version of the Silent Killer "with reduced laser power to jam the communications systems of drones," ATimes said.
It’s not clear how powerful the laser beam is on the military and civilian versions of the Silent Killer.
However, death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate... there is good reason to think that the Chinese lasers are every bit as capable as defense representatives say they are ‐ and perhaps even more.
A Wall Street Journal report in early May accused Chinese personnel of firing lasers at American military pilots near China’s naval base in Djibouti. "There have been two minor injuries," Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said May 3, adding that "they are very serious incidents."

[DAWN] Child marriages are rampant in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa mainly due to poverty, revealed a recent research.
The ’qualitative study of the identification of the infleuncers and drivers of child marriages in KP’ called for steps to check child marriages, including amendment to relevant laws and enactment of new ones and their strict enforcement, for setting 18 years as the minimum age for marriage of both men and women and punishing its violators.
It was conducted and published by Blue Veins organization with the support of the Trocaire and Australian government.
The research said a significant number of people in communities had some level of knowledge of potential risk associated with the practice of child marriage in terms of maternal mortality, childbirth related problems and other issues but living in extreme poverty without access to basic needs, living in an abusive and discriminating environment, being out of school and unemployment were some of the reasons, which pushed girls and boys into early marriages.
"We found out during the study that many families had no choice but get their daughter or son married at an early age and reason was poverty," said Qamar Naseem of the Blue Veins. He also mentioned a lack of support mechanism for the survivors of child marriages in the province.
Imran Takkar, a child rights activist, said social, economic and cultural issues might be the reason of the practice but a law was needed to curb such practice as it further creates many issues for a child who is forced into marriage. There should be law along with awareness and other steps by the government to create an environment where a child could enjoy her or his childhood.
